Personally, I would like to see, at least to start off with, some small
soloist acts (one or two people... fiddle and guitar, flute and bodhran, a
bagpiper... something like that.)
Perhaps finacially that would be more feasible? Things that include
workshops... for example, when Heather Gilmer came into Lubbock to work with
the Suzuki group and did a workshop.
While it would be neat and fun to invite in big groups like Cherish the
Ladies and such, and could *possibly* draw a bigger crowd, I think Chris is
right. We don't really have the resources to make it worthwhile... at least
not at this point in time.
Perhaps we could work up to that?
How about stuff on Tech Campus this year? Has anyone thought about doing a
Celtic/Folk Dance and Music night in Hemmle or somewhere similar? I really
think after Last Night's Fun did Minstrels of the Kells with the Symphonic
Wind Ensemble that there was a definite rise in student interest within the
school of music, and I think it would be good to bring a concert into the
school.
I also think that it being in Hemmle might bring a slightly different
audience because of all the different stuff that goes on there.
I don't know. Just some thoughts.
I think we have some great stuff going on here. Things have gotten bigger
just in the three years I've been in town. People like Chris, Father David,
Hilton, Kathleen, Cate and Darla who have been so generous of their time and
resources are just wonderful.
Laura
Folks:
A topic for discussion:
what types of events would you like the group to pursue?
Here are a few preliminary thoughts.
We would all (I think) like to see more frequent visits by a wider
range of touring groups to our area. Rev David Krause at the
Canterbury Center has been a staunch friend of Celtic music and
culture in our area, repeatedly making his space available not only
for concerts but also for classes, ceilis, etc., and we are all very
grateful to him.
However, we have trouble getting artists to stop here, and when we
do, attendance is often insufficient. I think this is because the
audience for Celtic culture in this area, while very dedicated, is
also very small. I know that when I am approached by agents of
touring artists (everyone from Kevin Burke to Cherish the Ladies) for
possible dates, I am _extremely_ wary of committing to producing a
show for those artists. This is because my observation of past shows
suggests that it is extremely difficult to get a large enough
audience turnout to even cover costs, much less turn a profit for the
artists.
Of course I am not blaming anyone in the local community who DOES
turn out. Rather, this observation suggests to me that, in addition
to encouraging touring artists to stop here (even if only on an off
night, for gas money), it is even more important that we DEVELOP THE
AUDIENCE. We need more people who are more aware of these cultures
and musics and more willing to spend money and spread the word in
their support.
We are all working in our own ways to develop audiences, for Irish
and Scottish dance, for Irish and Scottish music, language arts,
storytelling, and so forth. I think the more we can pool resources,
brainstorm ideas, help each other with contacts and outreach, and
think of ourselves as active proselytizers/educators on behalf of the
culture, the more we can expand the audience. In turn, expanding the
audience will help us improve attendance for Celtic events, and
increase both diversity and financial feasibility of events.
With that in mind, I am hoping that the CCA can think of itself as
not only a presenting but even more an educational association, whose
mission is to enhance awareness and expand the audience for Celtic
arts. Every time one of us is able to do this--offer a schools
presentation, visit a radio show, write a letter to the local papers,
talk up an event at work, play a free show at an old-age home or
hospital, entice a friend, colleague or student to begin attending a
class, and so forth--we are serving what I believe to be the crucial
longterm goal, that of expanding audience awareness of these great
traditions. I think that ONLY THEN will we be able to generate the
kinds of audiences that make it possible for the touring acts to
attend.
As the environmentalists say, we need to "think globally--but act
locally."
Over and out,
cjs
Folks:
I've added two new links to the bookmarks section, at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/caprockcelts/links/
These are links for "Ceili House", a venerable program of interviews
and live concert recordings hosted by banjo player Kieran Hanrahan,
and "The Late Session," a program of interviews and studio recordings
hosted by Aine Hensey.
Both 60-minute programs are archived for a week at a time, so you can
listen to them at any time.

Hi, My name is Tom, and I'm a fan of Last Night's Fun, and by
extension, most things Celtic. My father's mother was Scotish, so
I suppose that qualifies me a bit for the group.
I also attended and enjoyed the session last Saturday at the
Cantebury Center. I hope to meet more of the local supporters of
this particular branch of the musical tree.
My name is John and I'm an Irishaholic. I have been one for about
two years now. With the help of this group I might just be able to
further my addiction.
Thanks,
John Perrin
Folks:
See header. We can use all the active outreach and proselytizing we
can get. By all means forward news of this group to friends,
colleagues, and students unaware of its existence but who might be
interested.
Thanks.
cjs
Folks:
Be aware also of the Calendar feature (click on "Calendar" on the
left side of this page). This lets you add or view events of interest
to club members, and sends an automated reminder (how much in advance
can be specified) to list members. I've added "Weekly" event
reminders for LNF's pub session (Fridays 6:30pm at Klusoz),
Kathleen's Adult set dance class (Saturdays 3pm at the Canterbury),
and my Irish Session Workshop (Saturdays 4pm at the Canterbury).
Feel free to add more one-off or repeating events to the Calendar,
provided they fall within the Club's topics of interest.
thanks.

Folks:
By all means feel free to add appropriate links to the "Bookmarks"
section of the site. I've already added links for Last Night's Fun,
Lubbock Scottish Dancers, High Plains Irish Dancers, Trouble in the
Glen, Texas Celtic Music Network among others. Please add to this
list (click on "Bookmarks" on the left of this page), but please keep
the links within the Celtic-and-Southwest US Boolean set.
Thanks.

It was my pleasure David. Nothing like dancing to live music. I look forward to doing it again.

We do not have a usual venue or time we play. We book gigs as they come and we have time. Sharlan does keep a mailing list to send out dates for shows. We would be happy to email anyone who is interested. Also, either Sharlan or I will post dates on this board.
Thanks for the mentions.
And Kathleen, we really enjoyed playing Saturday at the ceili. You did a great job hosting the event! It is a nice change to have people dancing. Feels like we're not the only ones working LOL

Bring the kids to Klusoz on most Fridays at 6:30 for
Last Night's Fun plus a few other session players,
including me when I can get there. We bring kids,
sometimes all six. The place is still standing. At
that hour--6:30 to 8:30--people bring kids in there,
there's no smoke, nobody's getting stupid, etc.

Howdy all!
I'm Natalie Harvill, mother of 3, structural engineer,
part Irish (not sure exactly how much as am adopted).
A group of friends and I started going to the Texas
Scottish Festival about 5 years ago and I'm hooked.
I love the culture, the music - from traditional to
Celtic rock - and the dancing.
Would love to get something going in this area. Have
had a great time at Seaman hall here in Lubbock when
Clandestine, Wicked Tinkers and Tempest have
performed. I still haven't had a chance to make it to
see Last Nights Fun, always seem to be too busy w/
children's activities. I have a friend who is the
booking agent for the Kildares from Dallas, she's also
worked with Brother, 7Nations, Wicked Tinkers when
they are in Dallas. If she could get names of
contacts in the west Texas area she would love to get
them out here.

Clandestine has stopped here the last 3 years. Probably won't see them again here unless they stop through going back home before they go their separate ways. I haven't heard about anyone coming any time soon. Right now I can't think of who it was that lined that up here. Hopefully we'll get to posting all those things for this group and everyone can enjoy!

I'm Natalie Harvill, mother of 3, structural engineer, part Irish (not sure exactly how much as am adopted). A group of friends and I started going to the Texas Scottish Festival about 5 years ago and I'm hooked. I love the culture, the music - from traditional to Celtic rock - and the dancing.
Would love to get something going in this area. Have had a great time at Seaman hall here in Lubbock when Clandestine, Wicked Tinkers and Tempest have performed. I still haven't had a chance to make it to see Last Nights Fun, always seem to be too busy w/ children's activities. I have a friend who is the booking agent for the Kildares from Dallas, she's also worked with Brother, 7Nations, Wicked Tinkers when they are in Dallas. If she could get names of contacts in the west Texas area she would love to get them out here.
Trouble in the Glen. I joined a pipe band here in Lubbock a couple of
years ago, and it sort of evolved or de-volved into Trouble.
It's great to have a more local site for discussions. Thanks for the
invitation!
I'm Trish Anderson McLean (soon to be Campbell); Scottish/Native
American on my paternal side; German-Russian on my maternal side ~
and i'm not nearly as interesting as those who've already introduced
themselves!
I enjoy using Celtic design and knotwork in my stained glass (when i
have time to do it). By hobby, i also rescue and rehabilitate
abused/neglected/unwanted parrots.
I'd like to extend my gratitude to the individual that started this
group!! Don't know how much i can contribute, but i'm always willing
to help where i can when asked. Looking forward to seeing a growing
Celtic society in our area. :o)

I am Vasiliki Vilka Tsitos-Scott-Kitching, a microbiologist and
ethnic music enthusiast. Although I have absolutely no Celtic blood
in my vains since I am Greek, I love the music (well, I do believe
the Irish borrowed/incorporated the Greek bouzouki into their music,
so I feel it is only appropriate that I become a member, albeit an
honorary one). My husband, Chris Kitching, is an Englishman from
Manchester, so maybe that may automatically disqualify me(???) as a
member, but please, do not hold that against us! Our lovely daughter,
Deana, is an Irish dancer in Kathleen's class, and she has a true
passion for the Irish culture/music. We are a multi-national/multi-
cultural family...
Best of luck to this group! I wish it success and many happy hours of
glorious music and dance.
See header. Might be nice to post an introduction of self. Here's mine:
I'm Chris Smith, professor of music history at Texas Tech in Lubbock. I've
been a listener to and practitioner of Irish trad music since the 1970s;
currently I play a lot of tenor banjo, bouzouki, and button accordion.
Lead sessions and do gigs with my Irish trio "Last Night's Fun" (website
at geocities.com/coyotebanjo/lnf/) and teach trad music here. Very
interested also in Irish set dance, Irish language, oral history, and
folklore. I also run "Irish Session Workshops" at music camps and
colleges, teaching people how to play the music in the pub session
setting, and have published a "Celtic Backup" book/CD through Mel Bay
(with another, "Irish Session Tunes by Ear", in the pipeline).
Glad to have this group up and running.
