The reason, Neil asks is that if you are are considered a student, you do not
have to register your car in MN and still be satisfying both US fed a nd state
rules. Feds will always allow temp entry of car as long as you are in US less
than a year, however most states require that you register and plate your car
withing 15-30 days in the state unless you are a student. And in turn, needing
to register also means needing to formally import the car, which in turn means
meeting all entry requirements, like NHTSA regs, which not all Cdn cars do.
Also, regardless of whether you need to register or not, you absolutely must
tadvise your Cdn insurance that you are in the US for more that just a visit.
