Dear Ivan,
As IWA Peterborough branch secretary I have been asked by IWA HQ to
give the message below as wide a distribution as possible. The content I
believe to be self-explanatory and important. While local waters are not the
responsibility of BW it seems to me that the waterway community as a whole
needs to unite on this one. In the hope that you agree perhaps I could ask
you personally to consider signing the petition. If you could encourage your
contacts/ EAWA members who are on email to take the same action this would
clearly be very welcome.
I hope that you do not mind me bothering you on this one!
Regards,
Nigel

BRITISH WATERWAYS PROPERTY PORTFOLIO
Caen Hill , Kennet and Avon Canal -Today
Caen Hill , Kennet and Avon Canal - Previously
Don't let this kind of dereliction happen again - This is what will
happen if we do nothing!
You may know about the media speculation that the Government intends
to include the British Waterways' property portfolio as a component of the
£16bn asset sale.
The Government has made no announcements and is steadfastly refusing
to be drawn on the subject.
We have been using this period of silence as a window of opportunity
to lobby Ministers. We have orchestrated a political lobby in both the
Commons and latterly the Lords to pressurise Government, and have briefed
radio and national TV, using an array of reasons to support the argument that
a sale would be in no-one's interest.
We stand the best chance of preventing this sale if the Government
can be persuaded not to do so, during this period of Ministerial silence.
Whilst no announcements have been made, it is easier for Government to back
away as it involves no public reversal of policy.
However, an e-petition has appeared on the 10 Downing Street website;
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/protectourcanals/
IWA supports the statements in the petition. The worst outcome now
that this is in the public domain, would be if this petition receives scant
support. That might give Ministers the impression that there are few
waterways supporters who care very much about the issue. On the other hand,
if it is well supported, the Government, this close to an election, is very
sensitive to actions it might take which may lose votes, and would probably
take notice.
I am therefore urging you to sign up to this petition - if you agree
with it, and ask that you encourage everyone that you know, to also sign up.
We need more signatures than our membership, or even the total number
of boaters in the UK - So please ask all of your colleagues, friends and
family and e-mailable contacts to help us today! - and ask them to pass this
message on as well - we need all of the UK to know about this and to respond
on line .
The future of the waterways could depend on your actions today -
Please act, and pass this message on.
Thank you
Clive Henderson

Dear All,
This is just to let you know that our 50' Dave Clark narrowboat "Troll" is up
for sale. If you seen the boat, you'll know what a beautiful and unique craft
she is. If not, check out our advert on Apollo Duck (either use this
link http://apolloduck.net/130785 or go to the website and type 130785 into the
advert ID box at the top of the page). We're asking £55,000, which is a great
price for such a lovely boat.
Any inquiries should be by phone on 07801 737240, if possible or to me on this
email address (though I may not be able to respond to emails for some time).
Cheers,
Ewan

Oh a fridge sounds nice, we are tring to get one at the moment. What kind/size
is it that you have, if you still have it that is :-) We might be keen to take
ot off your hands if it is kind of what we are looking for, wouldn't want to
just take it from you if it is not what we are after and just end up skipping it
ourselvs. If it has gone does anyone have any good tips about what kind of 12v
fridge to get, thanks.

What, if any, action was taken or possible following the death of and
post-mortem on one of Mr Asbo's cygnets during the running of the May Bumps?
Everything must be done to safeguard these beautiful birds from prosecution. The
river is their home and all human visitors should have the decency to respect

Dear Camboaters
Yesterday afternoon we received a report from a resident of Fen Road,
Chesterton, that a mature cygnet was beaten to death by children wielding a
stick around 4pm. We have retrieved the carcass from the river today and we
have asked the RSPCA inspector to collect it for an autopsy. The reporter
had not observed the incident itself, but said that some residential moorers
on Stourbridge Common had seen it happen. Please could I encourage the
moorers who observed this incident to report their observations to
Cambridgeshire Police, either by calling the non-emergency helpline number
0345 456 456 4 or by e-mailing Ecops at
ecops.eastchesterto n@.... police.uk
This revolting behaviour is completely unacceptable and the children
involved need to be identified, located and given a stern talking-to, either
by the Police, RSPCA, ourselves or all three.
Thank you for your help.

Hi All,
I have had some items taken from 'Rosie' on her mooring at the Plough at Fen
Ditton.
These include approx 10 junior lifejackets, 20w solar panel, paddle with
large pirate flag attached and laminated map of East Anglian waterways
system. There is the possibility that they were taken by water, so stay
vigilant!
If you should spot a rash of bright orange, top of the range lifejackets or
a very distinctive flag and pole you will give me a shout!

When I became aware of Pat and Kevin Belairs it was before they started trading
as Floating Homes when they were still PKB Narrowboats.
It is reported that under the administration of Chard Wallis in Croydon they
amassed debts with numerous steel stock and various related suppliers, took £500
deposits from unsuspecting customers, two of whom were employed as welder
fabricators to build their own boat without ever receiving the agreed wage
before transferring all the company assets to Floating Homes and going into
voluntary receivership leaving nothing for their creditors.
The comments on the Canalworld forum would seem to suggest that their modus
operandi hasn't changed significantly.

Most if not all the people I know who have had a boat built by Floating Homes
has experienced such frustration, exasperation and anger at not getting on with
it or getting details wrong that it's beaten them into accepting whatever,
eventually, comes out of the factory no matter how far it detracts from what
they asked for.
As for Fox's Marina, I know a woman who asked them to fit a steel cabin onto her
narrowboat, which they did but they just tack welded the cabin side pieces in a
few places and sealed up the rest with silicon and I know that because a
subsequent owner of the boat asked me to cut an aperture for, fabricate and weld
in a side hatch.
They might have faired better had they gone to Cambridge Steel Boat builders
instead!

There certainly used to be more around Peterborough, but I'm a little
out of touch, There used to be a shell builder based near Downham
Market too. I think the folks at Earith are only fitters.
There are plenty more if you go out to two hours drive when you hit a
mass in the Bruanston/Daventry area.
> Or, failing that, any good builders, regardless of location?
That must depend on whether you want a "no expense sparred" kind of
boat or "down to a budget" one.
> We're keen to have the work done by a reputable builder to ensure
> the boat has the best possible resale value later on.
Some people will pay for a "name" boat, but if you're not paying for
a "name" fit out as well then a "name" shell doesn't count for much.
On resale it all comes down to how conventional your layout is, the
quality of the fit out, almost as important as either, how well you
present it at the time of sale. (You must have seen those "House
Doctor" type programs to know what utter pig styes or extremes of
decoration that some people expect to sell and can't understand how
their beloved home appears to others.) Seeing "Owner fitout" in a boat
description almost always diminishes a boat's value, unless it is
blinding obvious that it has been put together by a master cabinet
maker.

Doctor" type programs to know what utter pig styes or extremes of
decoration that some people expect to sell and can't understand how
their beloved home appears to others.) Seeing "Owner fitout" in a boat
description almost always diminishes a boat's value, unless it is
blinding obvious that it has been put together by a master cabinet
maker.
