In the last four days you have seen an email which looks like the quote
at the bottom of the page.
In an attempt to help your friends and relatives, each of you have passed
on the warning in good faith so that they would not be infected by an
Internet virus.
You have been duped into resending a hoax to over 60 individual people
plus another 60 on at least one listserv.
PLEASE, if you respect all the people you sent the original messages to,
resend this message to them ALL so they do not further spread false
information.
Please understand how a virus works.
1. You cannot get a virus by opening email
2. You cannot get a virus when you download email.
3. You CAN get a virus by unzipping a program or running an .exe program
which contains a virus
So...
Although this one is a hoax (see
http://vil.mcafee.com/villib/dispHoax.asp?id=vh10053 and
http://www.stiller.com/guts.htm) it is good that you are aware of it.
So if you get an email from someone who has sent an attachment you did
not ask for, before you open the attachment, send them mail to ask what
it is and why they sent it.
If they claim not to have sent the attachment - delete it.
I will recommend that a quality Anti-virus software be obtained , the
best free one available is from McAffee
(http://www.mcafee.com)
They also offer free monthly updates so you can keep on top of the
viruses.
The ViruScan will detect viruses as they come in contact with your
computer - either via email or on disk.

If you receive an email titled "It Takes Guts to Say 'Jesus'" DO NOT
OPEN IT. It will erase everything on your hard drive. This information
was announced yesterday morning from IBM; AOL states that this is a very
dangerous virus, much worse than "Melissa", and that there is NO remedy
for it at this time. Some very sick individual has succeeded in using
the re-format function from Norton Utilities causing it
to completely erase all documents on the hard drive. It has been designed
to work with Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. It
destroys MacIntosh and IBM compatible computers. This is a new, very
malicious virus and not many people know about it. Pass this warning to
EVERYONE and please share it with all your online friends ASAP so that
this threat may be stopped. Please practice cautionary measures and tell
anyone that may have access to your computer..
Thank You and be careful of this.

Stu,
From Lillis Lawrence
At present, I am a life skills/ family literacy facilitator in Prince
Albert. And yes I am Guy Lawrence's daughter-in-law. Guy passed away 2 1/2
years ago, but not before mentioning your name and telling a few stories
about NewStart!
I would suggest that you donate some of your SaskNewStart/TRANDS life
skills books to the Prince Albert Public Library. You could contact Heather
D'Amour, Assistant Director, John M Cuelenaere Public Library, 125 - 12 St.
East, Prince Albert, SK., S6V 1B7. email: damour@...
Since the library is part of the Saskatchean library system, all the
materials would be accessible to anyone in Canada through inter-library
loan. I believe that since they will be returning to their birthplace
Prince Albert's library will more than welcome them with some pomp and
ceremony too!

Hello CALSCA -
The AGM will be held at the premises of Life Skills Unlimited, 941 Kings
Road, Victoria, BC. There's lots of room, and billets too, so phone Anne
McCabe at 1-250-595-6451 to register. For $10.00, payable when you arrive,
how can you lose? Schmooze time begins Friday, 7:30 PM, June 18. We'll form
our circle at 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 19 and carry on from there. I
expect that we'll wrap up around noon on Sunday, June 20.
Likely topics of discussion include:
- a national accreditation system - should/can we approve a system or
simply act as broker to bring accrediting bodies together to help them sort
it out, or what? To add some juice to this, I have an email inquiry about
getting accredited from a woman in Australia.
- a reality check on tasks that people take away from the meeting - are
they doable, will they be done?
- where to meet next year - MALSC has offered to host the 2000 meeting in
Moncton, New Brunswick. Considering that we have only one or two out of
province people coming to Victoria, might we be wise to hold our meetings
more centrally? Our mission statement specifies that we support and promote
professional excellence in Life Skills Coaching - Personally, Regionally
and Nationally, so I'm thinking that there is a mandate to spread ourselves
around, but we need to consider the costs and benefits of doing so.
It looks like fun, and so far I'm assured that Paul, Bea, Lauchie, Colleen,
Dave, Devra and I, all veterans of previous meetings, will be there, along
with quite a few new faces from Vancouver and Vancouver Island.
For those of you who are following along with CALSCA but won't be at the
meeting, if you have comments to make about the topics I've suggested or on
topics that you'd like to suggest, please post them here in the next few
weeks so that they're available to us in Victoria.

Hello CALSCA -
Due to low registrations and the apparent higher viability of a different
date and location, the 1999 CALSCA AGM will be held on June 18, 19
and 20 in Victoria, BC. I understand that WestJet has excellent
rates and connections to this jewel of a city.
The meeting will be hosted by Life Skills Unlimited, contact Anne McCabe
at 1-250-595-6451, mailto:Lsunlimit@.... Registration fee will be
$10.00 and some billeting may be available.
I'll put details in the CALSCA website, http://calsca.com as they
develop.
See you there!

Hi Everyone
I'm hoping someone out there has experience doing Life Skills programming in
a correctional setting. I'm looking for some reference materials, and also
hoping to speak with coaches about their experience.
Thanks.

Hi Rod
I regret that I will not be able to attend the annual meeting - resources
(time & money) are too scarce. I continue to be interested in the work of
CALSCA and am willing to continue as co-treasurer. I have not spoken to
Heather about her involvement lately - I think she now has access to the Net
and feels a little more connected to info re CALSCA. We will prepare a
financial report before the meeting (yikes, that is soon). If anyone else
is keen to be treasurer, I won't be offended.
I enjoy getting the info about CALSCA. Our team would be pleased to have
input into the question of national accreditation.
Hope you have found work?
Cheers
Sally

I would like to agree with Jay Moore's thoughts and solidify the point about
cross pollination. In replanting logged over areas, the practice is to plant
single species rather that replace the mixed forest that nature designed.
This has made these areas weak and prone to disease and the next generation
is never the same quality of the original. Why would we be any different.
It's the diversity that will strengthen us all. "If there are two like minded
people in a working group, one of them is redundant" Stephen Covey.

Hello CALSCA -
I expect that a topic of discussion at the upcoming AGM will (again) be
accreditation and what, if anything, we should do about it. At last year's
meeting Cecil Russel volunteered to canvas the regional organizations and
provide us an update on their thinking re a nationally recognized standard.
Gary Copeland of the Maritimes organization has told me that MALSC has
given Accredited status to an Ontario accredited coach and is talking with
an Alberta accredited coach now resident in Nova Scotia about doing the
same. Their process involves assessing the process and logs of the applicant.
I can think of lots of reasons for having a national standard of some sort,
here's a few:
transferable credential
employers know what they're getting no matter where or with whom initial
coach training took place
it's a good demonstration of professional attitude if coaches can agree on
a professional standard
it could take some of the steam out of the infighting that goes on between
training establishments if there's an accessible credential that depends on
what you know and how you use it rather than on where and from whom you
learned it.
In this post I'm putting out two questions:
1. why is a nationally recognized standard a good idea?
2. why is a nationally recognized standard a bad idea?
Cheers,

Hello CALSCA -
It's my pleasure to tell you that you'll find, in the Upcoming Events
section of the CALSCA website, http://calsca.com, the Agenda and
Registration Form for the Calsca National Meeting and AGM. This year we'll
be hosted by the True North Life Skills Coaches Association in Prince
George, BC. So get on to your travel agents, start bugging the boss about
ProD money, save up your airmiles and I'll see you there on the May long
weekend.
Cheers,
Rod

Hello CALSCA -
The following came in my email a while back. Can anyone give a review?

<smaller>Winnie @ OUC suggested that I contact you about a new
publication which may be helpful for life skills coaches. The
International Encyclopedia of Emotions has been compiled for those
persons in recovery or in exploration of themselves. The basic idea is
that most people have not had much training regarding how to speak in a
clear manner about emotions/feelings. This text has over 2,000 citations
which have been shown to be helpful for people wanting to improve their
communications skills. The text is available from: DOLPHIN/P.C.C.S.
Publishing for a cost of $10.00 plus $2.00 for shipping/tax per copy.
Bulk rates are available upon request. Send cheque or money order to:
DOLPHIN/P.C.C.S. Publishing - 9541 Nickel Drive, Vernon, BC V1B 2X1. If
you believe such a resource ought to be shared with the coaches' network,
please feel free to do so. Thank you.

Hi Charli -
The Trainer Forum is an interesting idea, maybe as a panel? Are you looking
for workshops?
Including the 1993 National Network meeting that CALSCA developed out of in
the following year, this will be the seventh consecutive national meeting.
Cheers,
Rod

Hello all -
As webmaster's apprentice I get to tell you that no matter what you may
have read recently about ListServer address changes, you need not change
anything. calsca-l@... continues to be the submissions
address. The rest is just behind the scenes technical stuff.
Cheers,
Rod
