We just put everything back in the shopping cart and take it to the car....If I can buy $300 worth of stuff at Costco and never get a bag, I can manage $30 worth of things at Safeway. They still give out bags for meat and produce fwiw. Also, we shop Target in Cupertino now. We LOVE their bags for our trash cans.
~ John S. Leyba ~ iPhone: +1 408 926 5646 ~ johnsleyba@... ~I try and leave two or three of those reusable cloth bags in the car, and also at least one plastic Target bag in my jacket pocket, just in case. Even then, I have gotten to the store and had to scrounge through the trunk to find a bag or two. It takes a while but the benefits certainly outweigh our challenges so I also just keep reminding myself.

It's said to be a good technique to just keep a few of the bags somewhere in your car - under the driver's seat, in the trunk, in the glove box (it's funny that we still call it a glove box, huh?).
At some point carrying bags into the grocery store will be as natural as putting on your seat belt before driving your car. (Try NOT putting on your seat belt some time and see how naked you feel!) Your hands will feel empty walking from the car to the store and tell you "Hey, are you forgetting something!"

I leave the bags all ready to go on my dining room table but continue to forget them right then and there on the table, only to realize my absentmindedness after I'm in the store. I'm buying bags at 10 cents a piece, usually 3-4 at a time. When I finally remember, as I shop, I buy less stuff because I want to stock up on certain things when I have remembered my bags.*sigh*I will remember my bags next time, I will remember my bags next time, I will remember my bags next time.Congrats on the litter pick up!

Subject: [bvna] Is the ban on plastic bags working - Report on Feb. 11 Litter Pickup on 280
If you’ve been wanting to attend one of our monthly litter round-ups, put the next one on your calendar: Saturday, March 17. More future Litter Pickup dates at the END OF THIS EMAIL.
Just the facts:
Date: Saturday, February 11, 2012
Location: Highway 280 northbound between Meridian Avenue and Saratoga Avenue, plus the 280/Meridian/Southwest Expressway interchange, and The Alameda off-ramp from Highway 880 NB.
Time: About 3 hours – 9:15 AM-12:15 PM.
Participants: 9 participants this time: Sabine and I were joined by veteran volunteers John, Jerry, Pam, Elliott, Crista, Susan, and Don,
What we collected: 30 bags of trash, plus 3 bags of recycle-able plastic, glass, and aluminum.
Any cash? Just a dime and two pennies.
Oddities along with the trash (http://www.louitucker.com/TrashathonPics.htm)
â–¸ A small purse containing some earrings
â–¸ Several dozen business cards with a 2011 calendar on the reverse from Mt. Diablo Tree Service
â–¸ A black suede wallet (empty)
â–¸ A tiny pink plastic heart-shaped box (perfect for a Valentine's Day gift)
â–¸ A small amber bottle
â–¸ 13 quart-sized glass beer bottles - either one person drinking a LOT or a party at The Alameda off-ramp
â–¸ A broken metal tape measure
â–¸ A Faberge box that probably once held a wrist watch
â–¸ Two cloth napkins, one black and one white
â–¸ A red toy car that zooms off when dragged in reverse
▸ A receipt from Nob Hill Foods (two packages of bread crumbs, two Nestles Crunch bars, a bottle of canola oil, chili paste, quickslaw salad, bananas, avocados and limes totaling $17.79, and paid for with a debit card) - lest you think that people who shop at high-end grocery stores don’t litter...
COMMENTS
Rain was likely and the skies were low and overcast, but it never actually rained, so we got a good portion of our section cleaned. If we’d had another pair of workers we could have finished. Oh well, the trash will be waiting for us next month.
We’re already noticing a decline in the number of plastic bags on the highways. There are still plenty of old ones that we are pulling out of bushes, torn and weather-beaten from being out in the elements for several months, but there seem to be fewer new ones.
REMINDER: THE NEXT TRASH PICKUP WILL BE SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 2012. Dates in the future: APRIL 14, MAY 12 and JUNE 16.
Feel free to pass these reports along to friends and invite them to join the clean-up brigade next month! We are always looking for new volunteers.
