On Sunday, July 12, Mike Nelson, Jerry Ledbetter, Dakota Gauthier and I
visited Cross Mountain and Royal Blue WMA in Campbell County, TN. Some
really nice moths were found and photographed, including Regal Moth,
Promethea Moth and Clymene Moth.
But the stars of the show were the tiniest damselflies I've ever seen and I believe they were Southern Sprites, Nehalennia integricollis. While I've submitted a photo of one to Odonata Central for verification, I am hoping some of you will review this and see if you think the determination of species is correct. Hopefully, also, some of you can go to the location and see these damsels for yourself. I believe they are the first reported in Tennessee. I can give directions to the site if needed.
This area of Royal Blue had a large number of dragonflies as well:
Comet Darner
Common Green Darner
Slaty Skimmer
Spangled Skimmer
Widow Skimmer
Common Whitetail
Blue Dasher
Common Pondhawk
Eastern Amberwings
Banded Pennant
Calico Pennant
Halloween Pennant
Carolina Saddlebags
You can see the photo of the Sprite (and the moths are also on that site) at the following link:
