1. Be careful where you cut a hole for an inspection port. The stiffness
of the Butterfly deck is dependent on stiffener ribs made out of foam and
fiberglass. If you cut through one of the ribs, you won't be happy with
the ramifications. A 5 inch port in the back deck in the center just fits
between the ribs, and can hold a "barney bag". A trick to find the ribs on
your boat is to look at it after a cold night and there is either frost or
dew on the deck. While it is warming up in the sun, the ribs will insulate
the deck and keep those areas in frost longer, or wet longer after the dew
evaporates.

2. I use a blue plastic mesh bag with 3 suction cups on it that I bought
from West Marine a long time ago. I think they advertise it as a pocket to
put line tails into. It works well to hold a water bottle, energy bar,
etc. I move it from boat to boat.

cosmetically pretty nice still, and has no such holes cut in it yet, and I
don't really want to do that now if I don't have to.

kind of mesh bags or hard plastic containers that fit that area pretty well
and can hold all the "stuff" I don't want rolling all over the footwell
floor. What do you guys use for that?

somewhere to the deck? And where?

My boat is also from early 70's. I installed a 6" inspection port in the aft surface of the well - mainly for drying out the boat since it was given to me...
