Hi one and all
I have been going to Butlins since 1948 when I was 3 years old. Have many
memories and photos and thoroughly enjoyed every holiday at the different
resorts. Went to Skegness from 1948 to 1962 inclusive then had further holidays
at Filey, Ayr, Bognor, Minehead and finally back to Skegness. Stopped going in
the late 80s when the kids wanted to do their own thing but still went down to
Skegness most years for a 'day out' at our favourite resort. Decided last year
to start all over again and once more the pull of Skegness was to great to
resist. Now retired through ill health we enjoyed the stay and liked it so much
we booked up for 2 more holidays this year. Have to say it isn't quite the same
as in the 50s when there were seemingly hundreds of redcoats and there was so
much interactive stuff for the adults which sadly seems nor to be the 'In thing'
nowadays.
My parents went to Butlins from 1948 to around 1975 inclusive and when my Mother
passed away in 2005 I gathered all the photos and there are hundreds from the
early years at Skegness. Not sure what to do with them as my kids are not
interested in them so once I go I guess they will be binned. I did mention it
to the staff at Skegness last year but again, they don't seem interested in the
past. Shame really as there must be thousands of photos that have been lost over
the years. It would be great if I could find the time and energy to scan them
and put them all on disc. I seem to have less time for my hobbies now than when
I worked full time!
Going on th memories, I think my fondest memory was sitting and watching the
working waterwheel which I think was at the end of the Vienese ballroom and also
the balcony that used to run above the ballroom. Also spent many happy hours on
the boating lake (and fell in a few times too). Even as a young lad I remember
the Pig and Whistle, where my parents used to spend most evenings whilst I ran
around having fun with new friends. No drunks, no violence and everybody simply
had fun and relaxation. Also remember having my first bottle of Pepsi there and
boy did it taste good. Tastes nothing like that now.
I could go on for ages but being a newcomer to the site I had better slow down.
Would love to find new friends on here to talk about the 'Good old days' and
swap stories and photos. I have seen many changes both in the camps and the
personel and if we want to keep up with the times then the changes have been
worthwhile. But I do miss the great comradship from the 50s and would love to
see a 50s style week being put on for thos who can remember that far back. Even
down to the little novelties like the rosettes with the 'House' you were in and
trying to earn points to be the best house that week. Can't remember all the
'Houses'now but York, Windsor and Connaught come to mind.
Look forward to seeing some similar postings on here and having a good old knees
up!
Good night campers, see you in the morning.
can anybody tell me which butlins ha a chair lift and which had a
monorail and which had both i know skegness had both and does anyone
know who made the chair lift

BTW can I suggest if you haven't done so lately, go to Minehead. Yes
they have made similar changes there too but it's a hell of a lot more
like the Butlins I loved as a kid than Skeggy is now.
Minehead still has just about all its original chalet and a lot of its
original atmosphere so it's well worth the trip.

So you didn't get the Wow factor then?
Last time I went to Skeggy I got the "Wow. I can't believe how much
they've destroyed the place" factor.
can i ask what was up with the old butlins apart from the sleeping
digs. the monorail and chairlift was brilliant you used to interact
with ppl i remember shouting see u at the other end if u saw somebody
u liked on the chair lift or chatting on the monorail or having a
laugh at the donkey derby and knobley knee's and glanorous granny it's
all go because of stupid political correctness and daft health and
saftey laws there's no more traditoinal brithis holiday thank to that
You are so right Ricki but I fear we will never see those great days again.
All we have is the memorys and thank God and Billy Butlin they will never take
them away.

Oh my word! Talk about a blast from the past! My family visited Pwhelli
during the early 80s and my sister and I were obsessed with the Push
Button Click song. I'm sure we still have a vinyl copy of it in the
loft somewhere. It was great to listen to it again - brings back lots
of happy memories :-)

Hi Ian
Unfortunately I was only in Pwhelli when I was 1.5 years old (in
1973!!!) so don't remember your IQ. I do so remember Push Button Click
though, a fantastic memorable childrens' entertainment. I'm 36 now,
living in Berlin, but still hold my Butlins memories dear.
I managed to download the PBC song (from somewhere!) so I'm going to
try and upload it to Files.
Hold on to your hats ... cause heeeeere we goooooooooooooo!

Hello,
I'm a researcher on a BBC series called How We built Britain, and we are
featuring the Post Office Tower in London (as it was known then), where
Butlins ran the famous revolving restaurant - "The Top of the Tower".
Could I appeal to your members for 2 things?
We are looking for a menu from the mid/late 60s, and we would also like
to speak to a member of staff, a waiter or chef who worked there in the
early days.
If anyone one could help, please get in touch via my contact details
below:
Many thanks

Hi - just wondering if you've all heard about the 'Remembering
Butlins Filey' project thats going on? I thought there would have
been some posts about it on here. Is anyone contributing to the
project?
Dear Stephen,
Am v. glad to hear it! He passed it onto Kevin, who does post as Admin on the
forum sometimes.
I'd hunt for the link, but it could take hours. Glen sent me a nice email
when he'd given it up, apologizing for not having the time to get back to me or
update the site, etc.
Unfortunately, poor Kevin seems to be in the same boat!
So you were both right and I'm so glad everyone's friends again!!!
Glen did say he'd still be doing (now I'm bound to get this wrong) the Other
Holiday Camps bits - I'm not sure if he meant Warner's and Pontin's as well as
the other other ones (!) or not! So he's still involved. Last I heard anyway.
I'm a fine one to stick my oar in anyway, I haven't even been on the
Butlinsmemories forum this week! Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have time
because
the Yesteryear group was so busy????

Dear Stephen,
I realise this is nearly a month out of date now, but I was at Butlin's at

Glen doesn't run the site anymore. Hasn't done for months.
As for jumping down the throats of new members, I don't find that at all
