Thanx janelle,

Friday night is fine, I'll post directions next week, as well as give a ring
around to everyone. Both me and ben are taking our tents, there'll be room
in either. As far as cookers go I have a gas cooker I'm taking. Anyone else?

Janelle

My contact is 0411 151 658. I will probably come down on the Friday Night
and crash as well if that is OK.

Food I don't mind what we do with I am happy to do on my own but wouldn't
mind if we can organise to share stoves or cooking equipment. (Makes
everyone light).

Does any one have any room in their tent for Sat night??

One car may be enough then if we depart from Canberra and there's just the 5

of us, me and Ben don't have transport of our own. Janelle, do you want to
come down Friday night too, or early Saturday morning? if it's saturday
it'll make it a long day, and we should be able to squeeze another body on
the lounge here (first in best dressed for the futon mattress!)
There's nothing to stop us taking both cars up I guess.

there are no park fees. Water should be Ok as we've had pretty good rainfall

over the last week. we'll be camping just over the border into NSW (Kelly is

right on the border) so firewood isn't a problem.

here's the walk details...

Don't usually hound the group for stuff like this but I have a new Java
feature on the site I need a few testers for.

In theory, this little page will search the database and plot the maps
covering a particular location or feature that you specify.

http://www.galactic.net.au/maps/coverage.html

Its not linked to the site yet (hell I only started the app last week) just
through this URL. Hopefully, with use of the AUSLIG database, it will make
knowing what maps cover the landmark a bit easier. I'll do another page or
two later this week to allow coverage searching by specific map name or
AUSLIG code.

I tried places like Wilpena Pound, Cradle Mountain, Jenolan Caves, The
Breadknife.

Be fairly warned that it is a Beta (test) page and there will be bugs. In
fact, I'm expecting them so tell me if you find any. The app is pretty
basic with a couple of layout features, a grey background and only a few
other locations. Its a start... Let me know what you think.

BTW, New Virus warning follows ....

Hello all,

I'm just back from an enjoyable 5 day trip in the Snowies. We did Guthega Power Station to Dead Horse Gap, with a day walk in the Kerries.

It was my first Kossie summer experience and may I say it was my favourite walk yet, some of the scenery was mind blowing. It was somewhat disappointing, however, after taking 4 days to get to the top of Mt Kossie, we were surrounded by a number of large tourist groups, who had taken the easy walk of a few hundred metres to the peak. Maybe Mount townsend might be a better option next time.

We had some good weather, generally quite clear, both Weds and Thursday night had the most amazingly clear sky. Weds evening was spent over Blue Lake and in the space of about 15 minutes we saw several thousand Bongong Moths, all heading west, with a number of eager bats in pursuit.

I've some digital photos from walk, I'll put up on my website soon, if anyone wants to take a peek.

A most enjoyable walk had by all, I'm looking forward to doing another walk in the same area same time next year.

Cheers

Dave Hayes

Hi Everybody.

Count in Phil Doyle for NYE. There may be more, am forwarding message. I
suppose that this is a stupid question but I guess dogs are a no-go for
Bungonia? (Friend's with dog interested in doing something over new years.)

I'm thinking of leaving from Mongarlowe or thereabouts on the 28th/29th and
meeting you guys there (Down the shoalhaven walk/lilo) If I can get a lift
back to Marulan i can hitch back to Canberra no worries. :)

Don't forget Mt Kelly. At this stage we have three definites, and 3
probables. I will post a detailed walk plan and arrangements on Thursday am
(I'm going to Croajingalong from Th-Sun :)), If anyone has any enquiries in
the meantime, or if those who are interested in coming want to get in touch,
call me on 02- 6262 9606

Phil

PS I'll be relocating to Melbourne from January 11 but am still keen to do
some walks. I have a group of about 3-5 of us who walk at least once a month
(Mt Kelly is our December walk, but it looks like all but me would have been
busy, so it's good some people from this group are interested!) and we are
keen to start up again come February. I will post walks but Wollemi has been
a loose plan at this stage.

I am also going to post an article on accessing walks by hitchhiking, and
bushwalking on a budget (I am a poor student!) FYI. Bye now.

Hey guys,

As per the last post on this subject Shoalhaven River sounded like a good
idea. Good news. I just had a chat with the ranger down in Bungonia SRA. Do
you want to guess the number of people he's expecting over New Year?? NONE!
Nobody has booked a campsite.

For those that don't know the Shoalhaven is easily accessible from
Bungonia, as is the gorge and Bungonia creek. Marvellous stuff. There are a
bazillion things to do - caving, walking, lookouts, bouldering, li-loing,
swimming. Best of all there are hot showers, electric BBQs and toilets!
There's even a kiosk 2km up the road now.

So, its time to start planning numbers. Who's interested?? Those that have
no New Years Eve functions to attend can rock on down that night. I'll be
going down the morning of New Years (Jan 1 is a Sat) and staying at least
until Sunday, probably Monday. Stay as long as you like.

We'll need to book a site by next week I'd suggest and the sooner you can
get back to me with numbers the better. I'll also need an idea of possible
transport and equipment arrangement such as tents. Camping fees apply
(cheap!). Car camping - so no need to lug gear on your back.

More info on the park and activities at
http://www.galactic.net.au/bushwalking/parks/bungonia/

BTW, had a great time on Saturday doing the Great North Walk leg. I'll send
round a trip report tomorrow. Wish I could go to Mt. Kelly with ya :-(...

Cheers,
Rick

Subject: About This Group - Beginner's Guide
merry@...
Send Email Send Email

Howdy guys, girls, and others.

Since we are starting to get one or two new people join this group I feel
it would be beneficial to send around a general FAQ / Beginners Guide every
so often. This message will explain in some depth how to use the various
facilities offered by the group. I'll also duplicate this information in a
page on the site. I'm just starting out with this myself so if I get
anything wrong mail me direct.

Everything we will discuss here can be performed via the web:
      http://www.egroups.com/groups/bushwalking/
This URL will take you to the messages page of the group where you can read
all messages. The Group Info and Messages pages are public everything else
is private to the group. As soon as you try to access a private page you'll
be asked to log in with your email address. Then you can do a whole raft of
things...

*** Changing Your Setup ***

Every member has the ability to modify their setup, particularly how they
would like to receive messages.

      1. Go to the groups URL.
      2. Click on the group info tab
      3. Click on the "Modify Subscription" link
      4. Select the Delivery Mode of your choice

Full digest- Which is e-mailed once a day, and consists
the full message bodies of all the messages posted to that
          group in 24 hours.

Summary digest- If you choose daily summary digest,
you'll only receive the message subject and author in
the e-mail. To read those message. Simply click on the
links included in the summary message and it will take you
          to the group message page.

Web Only- means that they won't get mail from the group at all,
but will remain a member and be able to access the website.

Individual Emails - Get every message as a separate email.

   *** Sending Messages ***

Every member can send a message to the group. Initially, all messages by
new members are moderated and sent to me for review. This will help stop
spam. For regular contributors I'll then override to allow you to send
directly. To send a message just mail to bushwalking@egroups.com. Replies
are automatically sent back to the group via the same address.

So far, most of us are using the group to help co-ordinate walks. Anybody
can propose a walk (in any state or town, not just NSW) and then everybody
can reply as to their interest. But it doesn't have to be about new walks.
Post to the group any queries or stories of interest relating to the
outdoors - such as stories of your latest walk, new equipment, conservation
issues, current events, status of tracks, survival tips, drop bear
sightings, outdoor legends - we're all avid enthusiasts and the group will
die if there is no communication.

If we do start getting a raft of inappropriate messages by a member then
I'll start moderating his/her messages or remove them. I doubt the group
would like junk mail.

*** Polls & Calendar ***

We can set up polls to ask the group opinions on any issue. Results can
either be anonymous or enumerated (specifying member names). This would
seem to be a great way to co-ordinate events. Anybody can setup an
enumerated poll on a proposed walk and members can specify they're
availabilty on the Poll page. This then summarises who can do the walk.
Pretty easy to use. Have a look at the Dec 5 poll I set up.

There is also a calendar to store details of each event. Everybody has a
sepearate calendar in addition to the group one. Email reminders of each
event can be setup at will. In addition, I'll still maintain the Future
Walks page on Australian Bushwalking with new proposed walks if the
organiser would like, such as the recent Mt. Kelly hike.

*** Other pages ***

There's a Links page that can be used to maintain a group link list (member
homepages for example). In the Database page we can setup database tables
(eg, a list of members in each state - good for getting together with
others in your area). There's also Chat and Talk pages for talking between
members.

There is fairly good Help provided by EGroups if you get stuck or mail the
owner (me) on bushwalking-owner@egroups.com. I'm here to help ensure the
group is effective and interesting to all.

Tell all your walking buddies about the group and lets have some fun!!!

See ya,
Rick

Richard and Sarah are attending a XMas party Sat 18 Dec. I would normally
be interested in joining on the Sunday at some point if that's possible,
but it will depend on how far I want to drive. Namadgi and back might be
pushing it in one day. Then again, I've done similar length journeys in one
day before. Count me as an outside chance only.

Very interested in New Years walking. Would it include New Years Eve
somewhere quiet and away from all the noise and people? If so, doubly
interested. Andy and I were considering camping somewhere for at least two
or three nights over this period to get away from it all. Anywhere is fine
with us! Namadgi sounds good.

Hey Richard.

I'm v/keen for either Shoalhaven or Namadgi. With the Namadge you have to
consider that water can be an issue, and flies mate! The flies get so big up
there that last year I wrestled with one for half an hour as he tried to
take off with my pack! Also I'm going to the Namadgi probably mid-December
anyway.
Shoalhaven would be nice with a lilo.

Speak to you soon,

Phil

Hi all,

Last year some of us decided New Years Day was the perfect time to get out
of the city. We ended up trolling down the Colo river for two days.

Anybody feel like getting away from it this New Year??? I'm up for
suggestions as to where. Its a three day weekend, so an overnighter
somewhere near a swimming hole would fit the bill for a hot summer weekend.
I've come up with a couple of possibilites:

1) Mt Wilson - Wollomgambie River (~300m down I think)
2) Kowmung (Kanangra NP - long way down)
3) Shoalhaven River near Bungonia Gorge (read White Track walk 15 on site -
beautiful spot and only an hour away from mod cons)
4) Newnes (Wollemi NP - back of Lithgow)
5) Namadgi NP (Canberra - less than 3 hours drive)

Suggestions and ideas? There's also the more popular Grose Valley,
Glenbrook and Royal NP spots but they're pretty close and convienient.

Cheers,
Rick

G'day y'all

I'm going for a walk and inviting anyone who's interersted to join me and a
couple off friend's - we're going for a walk to Mt. Kelly.

Kelly is at the daggy arsed end of a map of the ACT and it's a damned fine
walk, Anyone interested in coming, is invited to respond. What we're lookin'
at is anything between Dec 3-19. Anyone interested, rsply to the group and
we'll be in touch ASAP.

Cheers,

Phil

Just have a look at the group's page URL:
http://www.egroups.com/groups/bushwalking/

There are various pages including viewing messages, members and polls. From
the members page you can select your own profile and change your viewing
options (amongst other things). Have a play around.

Cheers,
Rick

Guys and gals,
I've haven't been for a walk in a while (too busy getting married) so here's a
suggstion for Sun 5 December:
Mowbray Rd - Epping via Great North Walk (11km, Easy Medium)
Meet at Epping station (east side near bus stop) before 9am. We'll catch the
9:12am 290 bus to Mowbray Rd then walk back to Epping through Lane Cove NP.
Arrive back at about 3pm. Nice casual walk.
Interested? Please place your vote on the web page listed. Questions? Ask me.
Votes close next Friday.

How are you doing?

I figured I'd kick of this egroup thing by posting a message with some
instructions, hints and the obligatory rules. I won't pretend to be a
know-it-all on this subject - I have a total of three days experience with
it now. Its a process we can all get used to over the next while.

For starters, here's how it works:

Our group has an account with EGroups who manages our messages, member
lists, etc. Our group is simply called 'bushwalking'. They make there money
by adding a little advertising footer to each message that goes out (usual
thing with freebie services). Our main URL for the group is
http://www.egroups.com/groups/bushwalking/

Messages are posted to the group by mailing to bushwalking@egroups.com or
via the web. These are then sent to everybody on the list. Anybody can post
messages, but to prevent spam and other crap I've set myself up as the
moderator. All messages are approved through the moderator before
distribution. You can have multiple moderators, so in the next week or two
I'll be looking for volunteers.

The types of messages I'd expect to be floating around are proposals for
new walks (such as one Jane had last night) and social events, questions
for advice (track conditions, equipment, ???), current issues, general
discussions - typical newsgroup sort of stuff. The better the content the
more fun we'll all have.

Each member can choose one of three ways to view messages:
    1) receive an email for each posting
    2) receive a daily summary of postings
    3) view via the web and receive no emails
Set the option you prefer at your own leisure.

Replies to any message are sent to the whole group - that way everybody is
kept informed.

Anybody can join the group and can leave at any time just by sending a mail
to the subscription addresses that appear at the bottom of each mail.

Since everybody in the group loves walking one of my primary aims to to use
this group to coordinate and organise walks. EGroups give us facilities
such as a calendar and polls to help manage. For example, we can setup a
poll about which track to walk, or a poll for the best date. Each member
has the option of voting and the stats can be viewed by all. I can also
devote some of the ABCRS web site resources to help (such as displaying a
walking programme like we have now).

I'd encourage anybody and everybody to have a go. Those with more
experience, particularly people who've been on several walks with us,
should feel free to propose and lead your own walks. I have a couple of
suggestions that will follow in the next day or two. This is your chance to
meet and great people through a common interest and HAVE SOME FUN!

And even through most of us are in Sydney, there is nothing stopping
anybody from other states or regions getting together. Don't let the
Sydneyites rule this group (including me :-) )

Cheers,
Rick
