On August 14, 2009, via email, I requested digital images of the
kadastral map for Bukowsko as well as photocopies of my ancestors'
land/home records which correspond to the map. Knowing the archive
would not give me everyone's (in the village) records, I asked for
records for the following surnames. Note that I did not supply given
names. I did it this way so the archive would send me more records.  :)
Chrzaszcz
Zadylak
Zytka

I also included my address. Keep in mind that everything was typed.

The archive responded on September 25, 2009 with a price list and
instructions on how to pay them (bank wire transfer). A friend of mine
in Poland keeps an account for me at her bank so I had her transfer
the payment to the archive's bank on October 9, 2009.

On November 11, 2009 I received another email from the archive asking
for my address.  ???
I wrote back giving them my address again and stating that it was the
same as in my original email to them.

On November 28, 2009 I received an envelope from the Przemysl Civil
Archives. Inside was _another_ envelope addressed to me. Now I know
why the archive asked for my address a second time. Whomever addressed
the first envelope to me used cursive. Modern Polish cursive is much
different than American modern cursive and can be difficult to read.
Although my name and street address were clear, the street name, city,
state and zip code (postal code) were not clear. That envelope had
been returned to the archive. The address on the second envelope was
hand printed and arrived.

I've shared this with you to impress how important it is to type out
letters and addresses or to at least print them. The same is true for
letters and envelopes sent to all other countries whether it be
Poland, France, Argentina, Canada, Australia or the U.S.

I haven't had time to go through all the papers and CD.

When you get the safe open, look at everything and if you cannot photo
copy, at least copy by hand. You will be amazed what comes to light...if not

I think you are  referring to the Plonna cemetery memorial. I had to
search the cemeteries  to find  it.

Cyrillic. The  people listed on the stone could have identified
themselves as L~emko or  Ukrainian, but Pl~onna was a L~emko village.

Australia and South America. It's tough to get everyone in one place.

Genealogy conferences seem to be good places to meet others from this
list. You don't even have to be a member of a society to attend their
conferences. You just have to know when they are.

Some of you may be aware that I translated and put online (with
Philip's help) records found in Spis Parafialny Vol. II. These
particular records are only of the villages that would fall under the
jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic church in Bukowsko.

I recently went back over all of the villages' records and made many
corrections and some additions. There are now records of 14 villages.

If you looked over these records previously, please do so again as
many surname spellings were changed. (What was I thinking the first
time around?)

I must applaud you for wanting to find some information on your own.
But, I still have suggestions.  ;)

Consider signing up for the e-zine, "Gen Dobry". The editor is William
   F. Hoffman, author. He always includes upcoming conferences so I'd
say it's a good source for that type of information as well as
"regular" genealogy aids. By the way, "Gen Dobry" is a play on words.
In Polish, dzien dobry (pronounced similar to Gen dobry) means hello.
Fred changed the first word to Gen to reflect what everybody is
interested in, GENealogy!

I would suggest that you check the last couple of issues to make sure
you see all of the conference postings:

The Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Northeast
(PGSCT & NE) just had their conference in August in New Britain,
Connecticut. It was their 25th anniversary too. I was fortunate to be

anyone is planning on attending.

Kosiorek line back to 1750.  He actually did the whole town wether they were
directly related or not and went back until the names got less and less.
He went to Polish grammar school but does not want to help me or is too

Debbie: Well, shock of shocks, I thought most of you were from Pennsylvania! 
The Drahuszczhak or Drahuschak or Drahurchak records seem to mention
Northhampton, PA most frequently.
      Oh, sure.  Coming for Christmas to Texas from New York.  Well, not really. 
But it is sure nice of you to offer!  And about the conferences, are there any
good ones coming up?  Or where can I search for them online?  I knew there was
on Polish genealogy conference in Utah but couldn't recall the group name. 
Don't worry, no need to respond I will do a search.  I'm sure you old pros want
me to grow up fast and find things out on my own.  You know I never mentioned my
husband has done Polish genealogy on the Kosiorek line back to 1750.  He

We've all experienced what you're going through.

I think you would have to have a correct spelling of a surname before
you contact any archive. The surname your ancestors used when they
immigrated is probably the one you want to use. Of course it will be
in Latin characters (like our alphabet and similar to the Polish
alphabet) and not in Cyrillic.

There are several issues when you use the Polish and Ukrainian
archives. Both charge for their time, paper, etc. You can write to the
Polish civil archives in English but their responses will be in
Polish. Not a big deal - people on this list can probably help you
translate it. Any correspondence from you should be short and to the
point; no stories. Just the facts, ma'am.

The flu situation in Ukraine is bad. A friend of mine in Poland said
they've closed the borders between the two countries. Even without the
flu complication, communication from the Ukrainian civil archives is
very slow and very expensive.

The best way to do research is to use the churches and the LDS films.
Of course if the records you want aren't in those places ...
Those films you were reading must have been Roman Catholic church
records if they were in Latin.
I am curious as to what films you were reading at the LDS Family
History Center.

I think to make things simpler we should use the Polish spellings of
the places which are in Poland now.

Srednie Wielkie is in gmina Zagorz.
Lesko is a a gmina.

The gminas have a vital statistics office, Urza~d (diacritical mark
under the 'A') Stanu Cywilnego (USC). It wouldn't hurt to contact the
two above (in Polish) and ask for specific records and offering to pay
for those records.
Now this may not work for a couple of reasons:
1) USC personnel don't always answer requests
2) the USC may not have the records, having turned them over to the
"state" civil archives.

HOWEVER, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I say, go for it.

Brian Lenius does not list Srednie Wielkie in his book, _Genealogical
Gazetteer of Galicia_. He lists Srednie Wies but that is another

which Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches Lenius listed for
Srednie Wielkie. Perhaps Mike knows.

No, we are not rich. He is older and kind of sick. But I have
time to do this now and have a VERY strong desire to find this family.
Now there is this illness in the Ukraine and eastern Europe - I must
