Greed, Hatred, and Delusion: Transforming the Roots of Suffering
A Weekend Retreat with Sharon Salzberg & Robert A.F.Thurman

Friday, August 15th - Sunday, August 17th
For information or to register, visit www.menla.org or call
845.688.6897.

Buddhism teaches that greed, hatred and delusion are the roots of
suffering, the three poisons that bind us to the wheel of
dissatisfaction, but it also teaches that each of these destructive
traits can be transformed into a corresponding wholesome quality.
Through the practice of compassionate awareness, greed changes to
faith, hatred to wisdom and delusion to equanimity.
This workshop is designed to give participants a direct experience of
this transformation. Drawing on Buddhist psychology, Buddhist
philosophy and meditation practice, this program will show how
the "manure of the mind" can become fertile soil for the flowering of
insight and lovingkindness.

Sharon Salzberg is cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS)
in Barre, Massachusetts and is one of America's leading spiritual
teachers and authors.
Robert A.F. Thurman is a world-renowned Professor of Indo-Tibetan
Studies at Columbia University and the President of Tibet House U.S.
Menla Mountain Retreat & Conference Center, Phoenicia, New York.

Bethlehem PA. St. Francis Center is less than two hours by bus from
NYC.

This retreat is being offered on a sliding scale basis, which allows

amount above the lowest rate enables NYI to offer financial
assistance to those who request it and constitutes a tax-deductible
deduction.

that cloud our vision of ultimate truth.
There will also be opportunities for teacher conferences.

*WORDS FROM THE SUTTAS/SUTRAS*
When tranquility is developed, what purpose does it serve? The mind
is developed. And when the mind is developed, what purpose does it
serve? Passion is abandoned.
When insight is developed, what purpose does it serve? Discernment is
developed. And when discernment is developed, what purpose does it
serve? Ignorance is abandoned.
--Anguttara Nikaya

*QUOTE OF THE WEEK*
You and I are the force for transformation of the world. We are the
consciousness that will define the nature of the reality we are
moving into.
--Ram Dass
