Hi! I just joined today after my brother in-law urged me to find out
more about the Brownie Camera I have.

I didn't much about this camera until my brother in-law (who is a
photographer part time) saw it and got really excited.

Was he right? Are these cameras worth money?

I am only interested in the worth of the camera. I don't plan to
sell unless it's worth my wild!

Thanks for any responses I may get!

I will talk to you all soon!

Probably not, but you didn't give enough information for us to judge.
There were many models of Brownie, and few of them are worth a
significant amount. If you give a model name, we can do better. Or,
check on EBay for completed auctions of your type of camera, and find
out how much it's worth that way.

Greetings,

I just "inherited" a Brownie 500 movie projector which is in mint
condition. It's been a joy watching 40 year old 8 mm tapes of my
elder family members - until the lamp blew this evening. Does anyone
know of a online store which offers replacement lamps for these old
models? Any suggestions or advice from anyone previously in this
situation?

thanks in advance!

I actually have one for a 500 on ebay.  I have to dig up a few sites that helped me find the #'s but the one i am selling is for a model C and is the CZA/CZB variety.  Let me know if you are interested.  THese only last a few hours, somewhere around 25-30 hours i have heard so replacement is common.  Only problem is replacements cost much more than units you may find on online auctions.

Here is something I just found:

That should answer your questions.  If you need the bulb cza/czb email me and I can help you out no prob.

Mr. Jost,

I have a Kodak 35 mm camera with all of it's original accessories and
leather carrying case. It was purchased in 1959 and it has a wind-up
generator which powers the flash attachment. I might be interested
in selling it. I can be reached at:

I believe I have, or at least used to have, the flash attachment he's
describing. I haven't seen it for about 30 years, unfortunately; it was
a favorite piece of oddball equipment of mine. It's a flashgun that has
a red wheel on it, which you turn to charge its internal capacitor
enough to ignite a flashbulb (AG-1 size, if I remember correctly) when
you take a photo. It used the typical Kodak screw/prong flash mount. I
thought it was a particularly ingenious piece of equipment.

I've seen a couple of these flashguns on eBay, called a "Generator"
if I remember correctly. A really nice idea for occaisional use, no
worrying about batteries going flat :-)

Hello, just today I found my dad's old Kodak Brownie Holiday Flash
Camera. I was interested in trying to use this camera, to see if it
still works and such. He told me it takes 127 film. First of all, is
that correct? Most importantly though, where would I be able to
purchase this kind of film? Thanks, Emily.

Yes, it uses 127 film, and it probably works. 127 film has been
discontinued by most film manufacturers, though. However, it is still
available if you know where to look.

B&H Photo in New York has it at
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=search&Q=&b=929&a=0&a=0&Submit\
.x=32&Submit.y=14&Submit=Go&shs=&ci=336&pn=1
.
Frugal Photographer in Canada has it at
http://www.frugalphotographer.com/cat02.htm . Good prices!

I think that either of the above can process the film; your neighborhood
photo store or pharmacy probably can't. Another company that can
process and print 127 film is Rocky Mountain Film at
http://www.rockymountainfilm.com/still.htm.

Good luck!

Hello everyone,

i've just joined the group as i've been trying to identify a brownie, and didnt realise just how many models there are!!!

The one i have is not folding and it is not a box type, it is a nice shape, sort of "tapered" at the front, and has a leather carrying handle at the top which is attatched to a square tube running along the top that is for the viewfinder.

I have attached a small photo of this camera so if anyone can tell me anything about this model i would be very grateful!

Ideally i'd like to know when it might have been made, is it a rare or collectable one and maybe an idea of its value and whether i should sell it now, or continue to hold onto it!

Thanks in advance

Jim

Jim,

You have discovered what so many people did not realize. I hear all the time. I had a Brownie when I was a kid, do you have one of those. Little do they know that Brownie was an oft used name at Kodak from February 1900 forward.

Your camera as the front shows is the  Brownie Six-20 a Trapazoid-shaped  Metal Box Camera manufactured from 1938-1942. (Information from James McKeown's Book "Price Guide To Antique and Classic Cameras").

Mr. McKeown give your camera a "Book Value" of $8 - $15. They can usually be found for about $5 or less at flea markets etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi Doug,

Thanks very much for the info, i appreciate that!

I guess with so many models made, and so (relatively) few collectors now, the price is not surprising.

Thanks for your help, i think i'll hang onto it for noveltys sake!

A good source for such things is
http://www.kodak.com/global/en/consumer/products/techInfo/aa13/aa13.pdf .

The lens is obscuring the full name of your camera in your photo. Is it
a "Six-20 Brownie Special"? If so the above reports that your camera
was made in 1938-1942, used type 620 film (no surprise there!), and
originally cost $4.00 US.

It is a very common camera, worth its weight in land fill, I'm sorry to
say! A good way to check the value of old cameras in general is to
look at completed auctions on EBay. I see only one completed such
auction at the moment; it sold for $4.55 US, which I believe is about 3
pounds.

Hi All,

On a lark, I purchased the subject camera from a antique shop. It
had film in it and so I took the remaining 3 pictures. However, I
can't seem to open the camera to get the film out. I think one must
need to release the back cover by pulling on something... perhaps
the front handle mount. It is knurled and spring loaded. In any
event, I doesn't want to open.

Anyone out there know the right way to open one of these... before I
take a screwdriver to it?

Thanks. :-)

Hi Bruce
Yes, it is indeed a six-20 special!

Thanks for the tip about ebay, and the link.

Oh well, i was hoping it might've been worth something, but nevermind, it makes quite a nice contrast to all the hightech stuff in my house, so i'm not to worried about keeping it.

Three steps:

1) Pull the film wind knob out. It's not spring-loaded, and will stay
in the out position after you let go.
2) Pull up on the spring-loaded front handle mount you describe. Keep
holding it while you...
3) Open the camera.

I bought a Target Six-Twenty on impules earlier this
year. Didn't realize that size 620 film was a matter
of "rolling your own," but that is now just part of
the charm!

This thing takes amazing pictures. No focusing, but
it's alsway in focus. Neat. Also, the negatives are
huge. I am guessing they are 12cm X 6cm, twice the
size of an ordinary medium format 6X6. Of course,
that means you only get 8 frames per roll.

I shot a roll at a local restaurant today and the
owner of the restaurant in question says he is
interested in having any "keepers" blown up for
display. Considering the expensive camera gear I have
accumulated, it would be a real joke if I "turned
professional" with a Brownie.

I haven't been able to get an estimate of when the
thing was made. It appears to be a simple cardboard
box with two viewfinders (for landscape and portrait).
Anyone out there in cyberspace who can give me an
approximate date of manufacture???

Michael,

I've got a Target Six-20 and it's a great Brownie, it's one of my favorites.
The image size is 6x9, though, not 6x12.

This leads me to ask the group. Can anyone recommend a good commercial mail
order lab that will print 6x9 medium format prints? Seems to me that the labs I
deal with only do 6x6 or 645 format from 120 film.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks...for this reason I don't shoot some of
my brownies and old folders as often as I'd like.

Thanks,
James

James,

Here is the lab that I send any 120 or 620 I shoot. They will do just about anything you need. Billy use to cut up 120 film and shoot it in plate cameras and take it to them in a dark envelope. They are about 60 miles from me but they do a large mail order business also or you can scan the negatives and send them the digital files.

I mostly need them for digital today and their prices are just pennies over WalMart 1 hour prices for that.

You're right--it's 6X9, not 6X12.

I take them to Keebler & Shuchat (sp?), a local photo
shop in Palo Alto, which (I think) sends it somewhere
else. I think this because there is always a four day
delay between my giving them the film and my getting
back my prints. I don't know where they send it,
however.

While cleaning out my Mother's estate, I found two old Brownie's and
don't know if they have any value. One is a Target Six - 20 Camera
and is in the original box. The other is a Starflash camera. I
would appreciate it if anyone could tell me what they are worth, if
anything.
Thanks

In James McKeown's book "Price Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras" he gives the Starflash a price of $1 - $10 for the most common black model. Colors are a bit higher. The Target Brownie Six-20 has the same book value of $1 - $10. In reality either can usually be found at flea markets etc for a dollar or two.

Hope this helps

and is in the original box.  The other is a Starflash camera.  I
would appreciate it if anyone could tell me what they are worth, if
anything.
Thanks

Hi my friend and I were raiding his closet and found a
Original (we are fairly positive) Kodak Brownie flash
six-20, made in Rochester New York, product No. 170,
it is in its original box, with the user manual. It
has some gunk in the view lense, but otherwise it is
in really good condition and the packaging is in good
condition too. If anyone could email me back and let
me know the possible value of this camera that would
be great. Thanks.

I am wondering if our Brownie camera is worth anything.
It is a No. 2A Brownie Camera Model B. It also says US Patents Feb
1,1916 Mar 21,1916. I do know it is missing a strap but everything
else looks to be in good condition with slight wear. Thank you!
