I also have a Julia Brennan 19 years sailed on
Constellation 5 Sept 1851. Looking for info on Julia's parents,
siblings. She was from Kilkenny.
Born June 1832. From
New York she migrated to Beaverton Ont. area. May
have had family members there.

I've just uploaded a list of BRENNANs who appear on various passenger lists from
Ireland to U.S.A. at the address below, under files named 'BRENNAN Emmigrants',
parts 1, 2 &

Hi everyone. I want to thank sleeavon for
inviting me to this site. I am looking for the parents of
my g-grandfather Patrick Brennan. His father was
from Kilkenny and his mother was from Dublin where the
family were store owners. He was station in India with
the British army during the mid to late 1800's and
she was a nurse. They met and married in India. About
1869, as was her parctice, she boarded a ship bound for
home to have a baby. The ship hit a storm and was
damaged and blown off coarse. They pulled into Jamaica
harbour to make repairs and this is where Patrick was
born. There were 8 children altogether, 5 boys and 3
girls. One other son was named James and one girl, Mary.
I have been told that at least Mary and the parents
stayed in Ireland. Patrick emigrated to Canada in the
late 1800's where he married Isabella Myles in
Farellton Quebec Canada. They settled in Ottawa Ontario and
raised a family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou to the people who started this club and I hope to
get to know some of you as time goes on.

I thought that some of you might find this of
interest. Since my Brennans hail from Kilteevan Parish, Co.
Roscommon and more specifically Clooncraff Township, I
certainly found it of interest!

Perhaps there's a
Kilkenny connection afterall!

Any comments out
there? Specifically, can anyone tell me what more might
be known about Sean Ruadh O Braonain?

A quote
from "Kilteevan - a look at a school and its parish"
Brennan has two distrinct Gaelic Roots: O Braonain
(O`Brennan) and Mac Branain (MacBrennan or MacBrannan). Mac
Branain was chief of a territory in east Roscommon and
the name is mentioned in the Annals up to c.1500.
Most Brennans in the county and in neighbouring Mayo
are of MacBrennan ancestry. The principal O`Brennan
sept held sway in north Kilkenny. Curiously, many
Kilteevan Brennans including those of Clooncraff, are
descended from one Kilkenny O`Brennan called Sean Ruadh O
Braonain. He came north with his sons after the fall of
Limerick in 1651 to Cromwellian forces.

Hi Peter,

The BRENNAN birth records which
I uploaded, are from the index to Birth
Registrations in Ireland, which can be viewed on microfilm at
any L.D.S. Family History Centre, on
request.

To obtain a copy of the entry of the birth of the
'John Brennan' to whom you refer in the register, send
IR£7.50 to the address below, quoting any details that
you have. It may take up to eight weeks to get a
reply.

The Register of Births, Deaths & Marriages,
8-11

this helps. Good Luck !

Siobhán.

Thanks, Sleeavon, the new list gives a name that
may be helpful to me. The John Brennan born June 26,
1870 in Kilkenny, son of William and Eliza (Coyne)
Brennan has the possibilities of being my grandfather.

What is the source of this information? Are you
working from birth records? Are any street names in your
reference materials?

Thanks for your work. Much
appreciated. Peter

able to add more years in the future.

Perhaps
the available census' of Kilkenny could be published
in the future.

Possibly also the lists of
cemeteries and burials.

My father, John Brennan, was born on Maudlin
Street in Kilkenny City in 1899. His mother was
Bridget McCarthy. The McCarthy's also lived on Maudlin
Street. Their house was on the River Nore opposite
Kilkenny Castle. My mother was also from Kilkenny City. My
father had a number of brothers and I am interested in
finding out what became of them. The 1901 census does
list a John Brennan as head of household whom I
presume is my grandfather. And in 1942, a Bridget Brennan
was buried in St. Maul's Cemetery. I presume that is
my grandmother but I need further verification of
those facts.

Sub Hoc Signo Vinces is the motto under the
Brennan Family Crest. It translates to "In this sign we
conquer." I think its earliest rendition was as the coat of
arms of a Bishop John Brennan.
Of course, there are
two Brennan crests one for Ossory (Kilkenny) and one
for Connaught. The Kilkenny Brennan crest has two
lions rampant holding aloft a troff of grain.

I
am happy this club was founded and I think it will
be helpful for Brennans around the world to search
for ancestors and to enjoy the wonder of being a
Brennan.

I look forward to enjoying your company.

In 1890, Brennan births were distributed around
the country as follows; 178 in Leinster, 50 in
Munster, 94 in Connacht, and 36 in Ulster, occurring most
frequently in counties Kilkenny, Dublin, Sligo, Mayo, Carlow
and Roscommon. Today, the name Brennan comes 28th in
the statistical list of Irish surnames. Other
variants of the same name, though less commonly found
these days, include Ó'Braonáin, Ó'Brennan, Brannan,
Brennon & MacBranáin. There were five major septs, two of
which have seem to have survived in large numbers
around their original locations, in counties Roscommon
and Kilkenny.

Of these septs, the Brennans of
Kilkenny (chiefs of Idough in the north of the county),
were most powerful. After losing their land to the
english, however, many of them became notorious as leaders
of outlaw bands and highwaymen. Many became
scattered also, as the occurrence of the name Brennan
across the U.S.A. & Autralia demonstrates.
