Description

This group advances genealogy for the Bowes surname and its variants (Bowe, Boe, and so on). We:

1) provide a centralized location for high quality, general resources as well as ones specific to our surnames and individual lines,

2) interpret the results of DNA studies of the Bowes (and variants) Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA.com,

3) grow research into these surnames to the point where it is mature enough to yield reliable conclusions about the names and those who bear them, and

4) aim to house the largest online collection of resources (and resource links) pertinent to genealogical research of these names.

I get many emails from people saying their Bowes background is from ancient southwest Ireland, or from England and related to the Queen Mother, or English who came to Ireland as part of the "plantations" of the 16th century ... but we don't know until we Know. The Bowes One-Name Study and DNA project were started to sort out these questions. With 11 distinct genetic lines in the DNA project, we can't all claim the same story, but the more people join the DNA project, the better we can discern correlations between migration patterns and the historical record. Advancing our individual stories also advances knowledge of our related surnames as a whole!

If you would like to add material to this group - other than by message - please email me at martha.bowes(at)one-name.org. This will help maintain consistency so the site remains logical/easy to navigate while information grows.

Please provide all feedback, corrections, and suggestions to me at martha.bowes/atsign/one-name.org, or better yet, post them to community messages for all to see.

Sincerely, Martha Bowes

Re: Irish 1911 Census
That's the one indeed, but according to that project Bowe and O'Bowe do feature in the 1659 Petty's Census, See http://publish.ucc.ie/doi/atlas?section=N1086C

Re: Irish 1911 Census
Thanks for reminding me of this. I saw that website a long time ago (http://publish.ucc.ie/doi/atlas?section=N1001F) but they didn't have much data up yet.

Update
I've been away from the project for a time since I've been engrossed in fixing up a 1928 house for market, and traveling a bit while my husband and I decide
