Hi Boulder aspirants.. fished out this info from Boulder 2004 group.
Must read for every one of u .
Guys,
This might help prospective students intending to come down to CU
Boulder.
1) School - Decent ranking. Most people in the US will be aware of
this school.
2) Funding - Pretty tough whichever department you may wish to
join. Other avenues will present itself for sure, dont loose heart.
3) Departmental news:
1) Electrical Engg: -
a) VLSI - ABSOLUTELY NO FUNDING.It is not VLSI design that you
will be learnig. It's more on Formal Verfication.
b) Power Group: Highly ranked but need to be ready for a PhD to
expect funding( you need to prove your substance)
c) Communication: Top school but funding could be only with
Varanasi.
d) Others- Smae as VLSI no immeidate funding opportunites might
be available.
2) Mechanical: Funding only to those who opt for PhD and clear the
prelims.
3) Chemical: Again more avenues might open up for PhDs
4) Computer Science: Funding very minimal probably the worst at the
present situation.
Living: Gnerally living expenses can be met via oncampus employment
opportunities which are available in tons. Mostly everyone of you
coming here could be optimistic about finding one. Be prepared to
work any kind of decent job namely Cafetaria, Parking services,
Front desk jobs. At the maximum you might have to clean up vessels
and stuff which are automated to an extent.
You might be spending around $400 - $450 per month assuming you are
not going to be extravagant in your expenses. Your oncampus job
would pay you around $550 per month. Try to find some senior to help
you out in accomdation arrangements from India itself. If you find
the right person you might even get a lift from the Denver Airport
to Boulder.
Weather: Would get pretty cold especially for all the Chennaities
this is nothing like what you have seen back home. So get adequate
clothes, you might not want to buy your jackets back home , it's
safe to buy them here and not too expensive too ($50 - $60). Also
get yourself stuff for two weeks, laudry is generally done once in
two weeks.
School Safety: Highly safe no worries about getting mugged.
Food:
Vegatarians: 'Beware' learn to cook some kind of basic food items,
it's too expensive to find vegetarian food here, there are lots of
indian restaurants but not affordable daily. You will be forced to
cook your stuff. So get enough spices, masalas,Rasam, Sambhar powder,
Instant mix and other required stuff. It will save you a lot when
you make your initial purchases.
If you wish you can get yourself Maggi packets which will prove
handy, Maggi is costly here at the India Groceries.
Non-vegitarians: Should not be a problem, you can have a feast here.
PICKLE: Get atleast 1 or 2 bottles maybe.
Clothing:
No strings attached. Dress code is very informal so get yourself
enough number of T-shirts and Jeans( will prove handy). Clothing is
cheap here too but not till you find yourself a job.
Books: ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT YOU BUY THEM IN INDIA. VERY COSTLY
HERE TO BUY. So find out the courses you might want to take and get
the books- Ask some one before you buy, dont go around buying all
the books listed on the course website.
Vessels: A pressure cooker absolute minimum ( South Indians!!!),
altough you will have to buy maybe an electric rice cooker once you
land here. Not too costly don't worry.
Get food plates, get containers which are microwavable (
Important!!!) your cooking will be mostly on the microwave so get
enough containers. Get your own set of minimum vessels and related
stuff, your dependance on your room mate could be dangerous if they
decide to move after one semester.
Soap and Stuff: If you are a cosmetics freak finish your shopping in
India, girls - your cosmetics cost a fortune here.
Stationaries: A minimum number of notebooks and pens is all you
might need , do not go around buying tons of them, you hardly get to
use them here. All stuff will be in the form of printable notes.
MEDICINES: Get yourself the necessary precautionary medicines. You
will not be able to buy them here without consulting a doctor- which
is just not affordable.
DRIVING: For all those who know driving consider getting an
international license (Dont spend too much on it!) you will enjoy
driving here once you learn the adjustments.
Accomodation: You will be able to find an apartment with basic
amenities for
a) 2 Bedroom = $800 to $1100 depending on area and location. (
Generallly 3 to 4 can share depending on the size and owners
discretion)
b) 1 Bedroom - $500- $700 accomadating 2 people (max).
c) 3 Bedroom - > $1200
d) 4 Bedroom - I have no clue if they exist!!!!!!
You will be expected to pay a deposit amount which is typically 1
months rent when you sign a lease. This amount would vary depending
on the number of people sharing the apartment.
Bedding and Related Stuff: Be prepared to sleep on the floor expect
for Creek Side Apartments most of them are unfurnished so forget
your cozy bed in India. Get yourself some kind of bed sheets and
pillow covers.
Miscellaneous Info:
A rough hand estimate per head would be the following.
a) Initial expenses after you arrive here:
Provisions and Groceries - $200.
Winter Clothing - $50 - $100.
Health Insurance - Depends on whether you opt for
Buff insuarance or the private one called ISOA.
Deposit - 1 month's rent.
Total - $700 - $800 ( Inclusive of your
deposit amount so don't get frightened)
In short: Th experince will be a self revelation for most of you. Do
not get DISHEARTENED if you dont get funding straight off. Job scene
seems to be improving so if you are ready to bite the bullet and
spend for your masters you will be rewarded handsomely with a good
job. Patience will fetch you rich dividends.
GOLDEN RULE:
1)HAZAAR PEOPLE WILL GIVE YOU HAZAAR ADVICES ( INCLUDING THIS
EMAIL). LEARN TO BE SELF DEPENDENT AND MAKE WISE DECISIONS.
2) Whenever you make any decision related to legal stuff in the US
YOU MUST CONSULT your seniors before you sign anything. The rules
here are so alien even to the most experienced and you should never
get into the wrong side of legal issues. This applies mainly to
Signing apartment lease documents, Social Security Stuff and
anyother things.
Hope this helps in clearing any lingering doubts.

Also the letter contains a pin code and student id which is used to

have. Anyways they have asked me to get in touch with a graduate

Hi all, I have got admitted to CU-Boulder and have recently joined the grp. I plan to attend the university for MS in Electrical Engineering(solid state). I thought it would be nice to know each other before we all meet at Boulder. I am also looking towards forming a group interested in opting for off-campus housing. Has anybody contacted ISA regarding this matter(housing et al.)? My short profile: Rahul Trivedi Andheri, Mumbai Currently, student: B.E.-Electronics Engg. VJTI, Mumbai Univ. (I am vegetarian, dont smoke/drink)
"Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing."
This is mayuresh from Mumbai . got an admit to the ITP at CU Boulder .
Have still not decided coz of high fees but am 85% certain as of
now.Bit skeptical about the aid scene.
Any info on the aid scene there is welcome .Anyone who has got into the
ITP plz stay in touch . . .

Greg,
Thanks for offering help, I just wanted to know when are international students who applied for fall-2005 most likely going to get feedback, if you can find out about that then I would really appreciate it.
Boulder's deadline was as early as Dec, 2004 and it's one of the two schools in my list I have not got any email back from.

Hello all,
So, I'm already student at CU. I'm a junior in engineering. I just
wanted to offer some help if any of you had questions about
scheduling, classes, finding a place in Boulder, finding your way
around campus, whatever. Ask me anything.
See you in the fall,
Greg K.
Hello everyone, I am new to this group. I plan to attend the College of Music @
Boulder in
Aug 05. Is anyone else a musician here?
Happy Holidays,
Andre
