I just recently moved my shop from being a
garden/garage shop into a space next door to a coffee shop. I've found it
really rewarding to be able to interact with people and talk to them about
the craft, show them how books are put together, and learn about what kind
of books are important to them. The amount of space isn't ideal, but I
still have workspace at my home shop for spreading out or doing delicate
work that I need to concentrate on. The coffee shop is just one block from
our state's biggest university, so I'm hoping to do some lectures in that
space soon that will appeal to the academic community. I work there one day
a week, and the cafe owner is thinking about recruiting other
artists/craftsfolk to do the same on other days of the week.
Don't have many pictures up yet, but will try to get some up soon.

Some of these guys came to my paper studio a few years ago and made paper from

Marilyn Bonaventure is the enthusiastic Co-President of the California Chapter
of the Guild of Book Workers. She has been trying out new ideas and reaching
out to like-minded organizations: calligraphers, paper makers, book artists,
print makers. Here is what the Guild is doing in upcoming months:
>
>
> Hello to All,
> I have been working on an active year's program for the Guild of Book Workers'
California Chapter as you can see from the following calendar that I have
included in this email. I know that you are not members of the Chapter but hope
that you might be enticed by the renewed energy. I hope that you might fine
something of interest and plan to attend any or all of the events. It would be
great to see you again.

> May 20, Spring Open General Chapter Meeting. 2:00 - 4:00 at Marcia‚s home,
> 11836 North Park Ave., L.A., Calif. 90066 (310-722-9004).
> RSVP- california@...
> Open to all chapter members, mark your calendar and plan on a nice afternoon
with your friends and cohorts.
> Rebecca Chamlee will give a presentation on Paper Choices for the Binder,
Printer and Book Artist.
> Choosing the right paper for a book project can sometimes be a daunting task.
The look and feel of the paper is a crucial part of the overall experience of
the final piece. To get the best result, it is best to start thinking about the
choice of paper before starting work.
> We will look at paper samples and comparison charts to understand the
sometimes subtle differences in weight, surface texture, softness, versatility
and color of a broad range of commercially available mould and hand made book
and fine art papers. Letterpress test samples will show how different papers
respond to printing with type, linoleum cuts and photopolymer plates.

at
> Orange County Fine Arts Village, 3851S. Bear St., Suite B-15, Santa Ana, CA
92704, www.ocfinearts.org
> This class will introduce students to the basic tools, materials and
vocabulary of bookbinding. Techniques for the construction of simple bindings
will be demonstrated and students will construct three basic book structures.
Those who are interested in furthering their bookbinding experience will find
that these basic techniques are the foundation of more complex structures.
> This class will also discuss the book form as a format for other art mediums
and share the idea of the „Artist Book‰.
> Fee: $60.00 (+ $5.00 materials fee). Registration info below.
> Pre-registration required by June 16th, class minimum 5, refunds in full until

> Marbled papers appeal to all ages and can be made in many different ways using
more or less complex methods. This one day hands-on workshop will provide an
easy introduction to traditional style marbling using water-based paints floated
on carrageenan, which will be prepared in advance. Participants will be able to
make familiar marbled paper patterns including stone, curl and comb designs,
with further possibilities and the opportunity to explore their own ideas if
time allows. Preparing marbling size, how to prepare papers for marbling and how
to make simple combs will be covered. You will have a selection of papers to
take away ready for use in bookbinding, craft and card making projects.
Materials and tools will be provided. It‚s a messy process so wear work clothes
or bring an apron.

it is an attempt to organize the world’s visual language into one online

Karen and I are writing to tell
you about NAMIWalks, NAMI's signature 3 mile walkathon event that is being held
this Saturday, June 2nd, in Golden Gate Park.

Local NAMI families, volunteers
and mental health clients and consumers have repeatedly proven to be invaluable
to us by generously sharing their knowledge and experiences. NAMI is the
National Alliance on Mental Illness, and their many classes and programs have
made a huge difference in our lives. We are very proud to be walking to help
support
NAMI so that they can continue to help others in need.

NAMI, the Nation's Voice on Mental
Illness, is the largest education, support and advocacy organization that
serves the needs of all those whose lives are touched by mental illness. This
includes mental health clients and consumers, their families, friends, and
employers, as well as the law enforcement community and policy makers.

The NAMI organization is composed
of approximately 1100 local affiliates, 50 state offices, and a national
office. NAMI is there to support all those affected by mental illness,
including our returning veterans and their families in the challenges they face
with PTSD and other mental issues. It is
a fact that one in four families will be affected in some way by mental illness.

The goals of the NAMIWalks program
are: fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness and to build awareness of
the fact that the mental health system in this country needs to be improved.

NAMI has been rated by Worth
magazine in the top 100 charities "most likely to help save the
world" and has been given an A+ rating by The American Institute of Philanthropy
for efficient and effective use of charitable dollars. The NAMI organization
has a very low administrative cost with 95 cents of every dollar going directly
to its mission.

donation to sponsor us, please visit the link below:

you after the June 2nd walk date, you can still click on the link above to help
us reach our goals. It's never too late to help! :-)

DRAWING IS A PERSONAL LANGUAGE
"Every line has spirit. It is the flowing record of energy."

Explore your personal language in a supportive and accepting setting. Are you
afraid to "Draw"? This workshop is for you!!!

This workshop is open to anyone who wants to expand their ability to make marks

Every person has a unique set of gestures - marks - that they make. In this
class you will discover what they are and use them to create rhythmic patterns.
To make art that is true to you - unique and individual - learning how to relax
into your rhythm and trust what comes will open a whole new world of confidence
in drawing and writing.

I know it is late to be announcing this, but I've been in care taking mode with
my father and father-in-law these past weeks. Time to get out and draw!

Call to Artists

  Art of the Book 4

August 25th, through October 7th, 2012

The fourth Art of the Book exhibit will be held this year from August 25th to
October 7th. This year the Artist Union Gallery will exhibit the show at the
beautiful former K. B. Roberts building at 89 S. California Street in Ventura.
This
has been made possible by the Henning By-Pass Trust .

Curator: Inés Monguió
Juror: Elena Mary Siff

All and any artist books in any material and any format will be considered.

In past exhibits, artists have shown books from miniscule limited editions to
installation-size work. Materials thus far have included canvas, wood, cloth,
Tyvek, Plexiglas, metal, clay, organic materials, stone, coffee filters, video,
and of course, paper. Content has ranged from travel journals, through
abstracts with no text, to “The Invisible Man.” There have been books encased
in handmade paper, and “censorable” books with pages that could not be opened.
There are few restrictions, and that is what makes book art such an interesting
genre.

In addition to book art, the exhibit will include two-dimensional art that
features text as an integral part of the work. Poems in broadsheet form have
been accepted, as well as paintings and prints with poetry or text that is meant
to be read in the context of the piece.

Intake: Monday, August 20th from 4 to 7pm
Tuesday August 21st from 9am to 12 noon
End of exhibit pick-up: Monday, October 8th from 4 to 7pm

NOTE: Books may be mailed, with a return postage paid/self-addressed mailing
label, but must be available to the juror no later than 8/21/12 at noon.

Please contact the curator at monguio@... for further information..

> I'm writing to invite you to participate in the Santa Barbara Art
Collaboartive's next Bar Napkin Biennale to take place in early November. We are
accepting submissions and having a live drawing session with participating
artists at Roy on November 3rd, from 11 am to 6 pm, with the possibility of it
running later into the night as logistics permit. This work will be compiled
and curated to fit within the 2 walls at the Arts Fund on the 7th, where the
napkins will be part of a silent auction with a reception on Saturday the 10th,
ending Tuesday the 13th. Spill over work will likely be compiled and shown in a
flip book format adjacent to the walls in question. A silent auction would be
held for all pieces displayed and the funds will go to the Arts Collaborative.
>
> Funds from the event will be used to extend the SBAC's insurance to allow the
organization to umbrella other arts groups under their policy. The SBAC has for
a long time wanted to be able to provide liability insurance for smaller arts
organizations that are not able to afford a policy for themselves. This will be
put to use specifically by small theater troupes, but could be used for
impromptu exhibitions or concerts in non-traditional spaces.
>
> We'll supply all the napkins and media on the 3rd, of course. I hope you can
make it. It is a great opportunity to hang out with other artists and cool
people generally in a totally informal setting.

PAPERS! PLEASE!

During the month of October 2013, members of the Friends of Dard Hunter will
join together in St. Louis, Missouri for Papers! Please! a conference hosted by
Washington University and Webster University, with a four day pre-conference
hosted by The Craft Alliance. The conference events and activities will include
an array of workshops and demonstrations, lectures, exhibitions, and museum
tours.

The role paper plays in the creation of our identities as individuals and
communities will be a focus of the conference, with discussion about the
interconnectivity between art, craft, and theory. We welcome anyone who has an
interest in hand papermaking and related fields. For more information and to
become a member, please visit www.friendsofdardhunter.org.

Proposals

Deadline: April 2, 2013

Presentations

Proposals can be a one person talk (20 minutes) or a panel of presenters (40
minutes). If you are proposing a panel, please indicate the panel moderator and
up to three panel presenters. Special consideration will be given to
presentations that focus on the conference theme. Proposals should be no more
than 500 words, describing the topic to be discussed and its relevance to the
papermaking community. Submit proposals as an attachment to
friendsofdardhunter@... with the subject line "presentation."

Demonstrations

Proposals can be a one person or collaborative presentation demonstrating a
particular skill, process, or style. General equipment for papermaking,
printmaking, bookmaking, and laser cutting are available (studio and equipment
specifications forthcoming) and Missouri Botanical Gardens will donate specific
plant harvests. Demonstration sessions will be approximately four hours long,
with groups of conference attendees rotating between demonstration sites.
Techniques must be demonstrated from start to finish in the allotted time,
however, the technique or process may be repeated several times within the
session to accommodate a rotating audience. Any special needs must be discussed
and approved prior to acceptance and demo. Proposals should be no more than 500
words, describing the process to be demonstrated and specifically detailing
equipment needs. Submit proposals as an attachment to
friendsofdardhunter@... with the subject line "demonstration."

Projects

We are working directly with the businesses of Cherokee Street in St. Louis to
offer conference participants opportunities for project spaces, pop-up
exhibitions, and street performances on Friday, October 18. Friends of Dard
Hunter members are invited to submit proposals for projects to our local
community organizer. If your project is chosen, we will work with you to place
your project in a space on Cherokee Street as part of The Cherokee Street
Gallery Walk on Friday evening of the conference. Proposals can include
collaborative or individual artist projects or exhibitions. Projects can be from
one night to several months in duration, depending on the host site. Please
consider projects that are based on activity in the space and that generate
creative output or provide a contribution to conference attendees and the
surrounding community. Keep in mind that your participation in The Cherokee
Street Gallery Walk involves a large commitment to planning, staging,
maintaining, and deinstalling your project. Proposals should be no more than 500
words, describing the scope of the project and specifically detailing its public
involvement. Email proposals as an attachment to Morgan Keenan at
missourigsanetwork@... with the subject line "project".

"Cherokee Street is a vibrant community of independent businesses, cooperatives,
entrepreneurs and artists. On Cherokee Street a collective spirit prevails – of
inclusiveness, collaboration, diversity and enthusiasm – fueled by a
by-the-bootstraps DIY ethos. Here, you can find authentic Hispanic restaurants
as well as multi-colored screen-prints, meticulous wood-cuts, custom-printed
t-shirts, vegan ice-cream, old-world Lickhalter breads, freshly roasted coffee,
obscure LPs and rare antiques."

CALL FOR ARTISTS BOOKS

Well the time has come to extend the deadline for Reader's Art to January
20, 2013. Reader's Art is an
annual survey show of artists books that has been in existence since the year
2000. The theme of the show changes
each year, as a way to focus the show.
These themes are very loose…more a suggestion than a theme. The key thing is to
create a cohesive
show that examines what is happening in artists books today. ( I especially
need proposals for the windows! )

READER'S ART 13, 13th annual survey show of
artists books, March/April 2013

The theme for 2013 is :

NEW BEGINNINGS

In this election year, it
seemed reasonable to consider new beginnings. Certainly the politicians are
always declaring a "new vision" for America. What new beginnings
might you like to see?

While politically
motivated work will have an advantage, all work that deals with the wide open
theme of New Beginnings will be considered.

This is show of ARTISTS BOOKS. All media and structures that can be construed as
a book or
refer sufficiently to bookness will be considered. Artists should send between
3-10 jpg's and a resume and/or artists statement. Please download the How to
Apply document from http://www.susanhenselgallery.com for other instructions.
Applications dealdine Jan 15, 2013 extended to January 20, 2013
