The latest issue of Surface Design Magazine is devoted to paper and books.
There is work by Mary Hark on the cover and an excellent article about her.
Allison Roscoe has written a powerful article about the Combat Paper Project.
The work of Amy Jacobs is well illustrated and Daniella Woolf, who showed
encaustic at the 2010 IAPMA meeting, has outdone herself with a great article
about book makers and paper artists in Santa Cruz, Ca.
http://www.surfacedesign.org/publications/sda-journal

Hand/Eye magazine, which I get online for free, has four articles about artists
using paper:
http://www.handeyemagazine.com/

Studios Magazine has an article with a number of pictures of my papermaking
studio. Included is a picture of Andrea Peterson teaching last year, with Kathy
Wosika front and center.

Andrea will be teaching again at my studio before the Friends of Dard Hunter
conference in October here in Santa Barbara. Please check out our website,

I hope to see this town rock with papermakers this coming October!

A workshop with Brugge calligrapher, Liesbet Boudens. Liesbet spent three days
with the Los Angeles-area Society for Calligraphy. Enthusiasm ran high, with
participants, coming early, staying late and skipping breaks, too engrossed in
their work to break away. Almost everybody produced one exhibit-worthy piece and
several produced more than one piece. http://gallery.me.com/sadlerweb/100486

Thank you Jill for sending links to such wonderful sites. As our family has
a huge love of books and all the wonder they hold inside, this story of the
mysterious gifts of loving book sculptures is dear to my heart. It makes me
want to create a little mystery in my local library!!!

Papermaking Studio: The Large Sheet 2-D and 3-D
October 18-20, 10:00am-4:00pm

This workshop will explore the phenomena of the large sheet. We will explore how
to make large sheets in your own home studio/backyard by yourself. In this
workshop we will be utilizing a 22" x 30" mould and deckle, but Andrea uses the
same process for 48" x 72" paper art works. This process doesn’t need a press or
a drying system to achieve fat gorgeous sheets or works of art. We will make
large sheets that we will apply fnely beaten pigmented cotton pulp onto as well
as making a photographic pulp stencil of our own that will be used during the
workshop. Some of the large sheets of high-shrink abaca that we make will be
air-dried and these will be utilized for sculptural forms. This is a high-paced
workshop packed with all kinds of information and hands-on for the beginner and
advanced papermaker artist.

Fee: $300.00, all materials included

The Friends of Dard Hunter, an international organization that connects and
educates papermakers, will have a regional meeting
here in Santa Barbara from Oct. 18 - 23rd. I have asked our members to spend
one afternoon demonstrating papermaking to anyone who is interested. On Oct. 22
we will have a free public Hand Papermaking Festival at Littlewood Studios from
2-5.

The conference is being held at the Mission, and my studio is a few blocks walk
from there. You are invited to both. Details of the conference are on the
Friends website, below.

I can safely say this will be the only time 40 hand papermakers will convene in
Santa Barbara anytime soon!
