C.C. STERN TYPE FOUNDRY - OPEN HOUSE THIS SATURDAY MARCH 26TH

All who are able to make it to to Portland, Oregon are
invited to an open house at the C. C. Stern Type Foundry this
Saturday, March 26, from 3:00 to 7:00 p. m.

Events of the afternoon will include a tour of the museum's foundry equipment
and a silent auction of printed ephemera.

The foundry-museum is located at 8900 NE Vancouver Way, Portland, Oregon. For
more information you may click on this link to a news items in the Willamette
Week:

http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-17249-out_of_sorts.html

or browse the foundry's website, ccsterntype.org .

The C.C. Stern Type Foundry is a working museum – with a focus on
"working." The foundry honors the memory of the late C. Christopher Stern, who
built and operated the foundry at Stern & Faye, Printers of Sedro-Woolley,
Washington.

The mission of the C.C. Stern Type Foundry is to cultivate a unique connection
between industry and the arts in the Pacific Northwest. For the first phase of
the museum's operation, the focus will be on relearning the skills and
revitalizing the experiences of the working type foundry.

The museum will provide educational programming, including live
demonstrations of the foundry equipment and type casting processes.
It will also provide working displays and collected references, and
serve as an educational resource center for teachers and students of
history, printing, publishing, design, creative writing, book arts,
and journalism.

I'm a poet/printer in the San Francisco Bay Area (links below) who's been
looking for a Vandercook for MONTHS to no avail. Any chance you have a
Vandercook for sale or can suggest where I might continue the search outside of
Briar Press? Any advice you can offer would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

Check out this YouTube clip of a traditional Taiwan letterpress shop that
started in 1969. It is thought to be one of the last.

With 3000 to 6000 different characters, finding the right character is a
challenge. Looking for a
Chinese character is like looking up a word in a dictionary...and for the
untrained, takes more than awhile.

It makes handsetting type from a 26 letter alphabet seem like child's play and
the use of  photopolymer plates a dream.

This is an interesting YouTube video of a Japanese letterpress class...using a
press that at first glance looks similar to a C&P Pilot. But on closer
inspection, it has a counterweight on the INSIDE of the press. It has the
letters NOI cast into the a lower frame bar. There were several of these presses
in operation in the classroom. Also note that the makeready looks like it's
being done on top of the tympan sheet, and they are using straight pins with
bead heads for guage pins.

Dear Sir/Madam

May I take this opportunity to introduce myself briefly. I am a cultural
heritage economist and my main area of scientific interest lies in the
marketing and management of heritage conservation services. I am
currently working at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt
(Oder), Germany as a coordinator of the postgraduate course in European
Cultural Heritage. Simultaneously, I am also pursuing my research within
a Marie Curie Reintegration Grant, 7th Framework Programme. Within this
framework I intend to draw up a handbook on marketing for conservators.
For the purpose of my research I have designed the following
questionnaire:

http://conservationmarketing-en.questionpro.com
<http://conservationmarketing-en.questionpro.com>

It is intended primarily for conservators working in private practice or
freelance conservators. I have come across your contact details via the
ConsDistList E-Mail Directory and I would greatly appreciate if you
agree to participate in this survey. Although the EU is funding my
research I would also very much welcome input from non-EU conservators.

This questionnaire is also available in German and Polish language
versions:

   German: http://conservationmarketing-de.questionpro.com
<http://conservationmarketing-de.questionpro.com>

   Polish: http://conservationmarketing-pl.questionpro.com

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

While thanking you in anticipation, I remain with my best regards,

I'm going to teach three book arts classes in July - Saturdays from 11-1 on the
16th, 23rd, and30th. This is a trial balloon since I am teaching at Fishbon, an
artists collective that has just gone from years of being underground to
in-the-media with their current dance festival: the Santa Barbara Adapt Dance
Festival (it was on the cover of Scene in the SB News Press with a two page
spread inside.)

Anyway, I am going to teach the first class on Guerilla Bookmaking: fast, cheap,
easy, using recycled material - the kind of thing you can make in 10 minutes and
take to Burning Man. Also a simple one signature pamphlet with different styles
of binding. But then I was thinking what else? We haven't had Sally Timlin's
classes at Adult Ed for years now - is there anyone in this community who wants
to come and has a request? Pop-ups? Tunnel books? Hidden parts and secret
envelopes? Journals? Paste Papers? Accordion and map fold books? Japanese
side stab binding? I'm game for whatever.

Great that you're doing this, Jill. I have no suggestions other than
those you've mentioned for structures that can be done in a 2 hours
class. However, there is a neat 2 signature binding that's quick and
easy and impressive....don't know how to explain it to you. Also,
there was a little book that we made at your house once that's fun.
It was an accordian but it had cut outs that could turn from one side
to the other (back to front) and it was glued onto boards for a hard
cover. Guess these have to be pretty minimal/fast/easy. The appeal
will have to be in the papers and content and accoutrements.
Personally I love paste papers and I don't like tunnel books and pop-
up...just my opinion.
I passed your email on to the members of of my BookArts group and they
are asking "where" and "cost" of the classes.
Thanks,
Sharon Engel

There has been a change to the original dates of this exhibition, but this

Call for Entries

Artists' Books 2011 Exhibition

July 11 - August 26, 2011

Cuesta College Art Gallery

San Luis Obispo, CA 93403-8106

Just a short introduction to the call for entries for "Artists' Books 2011",
my name is David Prochaska; I am an instructor of fine art at Cuesta
College, San Luis Obispo, California. Since 1999 I have organized an annual
book arts exhibition, to expose our local community to the community of
artists making books. These exhibitions have grown each year, both in the
number of books exhibited, as well as the number of enthusiastic visitors to
these installations. If you are looking to expose your artist books to a
new and enthusiastic audience, then this is the exhibition for you.

In these times of fiscal restraints, we are all aware of the limited funding
accessible to the arts. At the same time we must, as artists, be aware of
the need to build greater exposure to all art forms. For this reason we must
continue to ask the artists contributing to these exhibitions to assist in
the transportation of their books. (Mailing fees generally cost between $10
to $20 dollars.) With no entry fee or other charges this is a small price to
pay for the chance to get your books out to the people. The juror for
year's exhibition will be the Cuesta College Book Arts students.

This is a "hands on" exhibition! We want to encourage the visitors to
interact with these book forms, so please send books you want people to
interact with. We will provide gloves to the visitors to protect the books
from any soiling. But again, we really do hope to build a willingness to
interact with the books exhibited.

The exhibition will display between 80-100 books, so your work will be in
good company.

To participate in "Artists' Books 2011", please write or e-mail me for a
prospectus.

Lieberman Lecture
2011 Lieberman Lecture
Sunday, July 10, 2011
2:00 p.m. at the Huntington Library
San Marino, California

The annual Lieberman Lecture commemorates J. Ben Lieberman (1914ˆ1984), founder
and first president of the American Printing History Association. The lecture is
a moveable feast, given at a different institution each year, by a figure
distinguished in the history of printing or the book arts. Past speakers include
Betsy Davids Jack Stauffacher, Johanna Drucker, John Randle, Claire Van Vliet,
and Paul Needham.

The 2011 Lieberman Lecture will be given by John Bidwell, Astor Curator of
Printed Books and Bindings at the Morgan Library & Museum. The Lecture will be
held at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, at 2:00 p.m. on
Sunday, July 10, 2011, followed by a reception sponsored by the Huntington
Library, the Zamorano Club, and the Southern California APHA Chapter. John has
frequently lectured on paper history topics and has published articles, essays
and monographs in this field. His next book will be American Paper Mills,
1690-1832, a co-publication of the University Press of New England and the
American Antiquarian Society.

The title of his lecture is "Early American Paper Mills: Five Hundred and Still
Counting." The lecture will be an account of his attempts to identify and
describe paper mills operating in this country between 1690 and 1832. Many of
these mills have been unrecorded until now. New information found in archival
sources, census returns and newspaper reports makes it possible to follow the
fortunes of a rapidly growing trade, an important source of cheap newsprint
during the colonial period and a vital component of book publishing projects
during the early industrial era. By 1832 Americans could compete against
imported goods with wrapping, writing, printing, and specialty papers of their
own manufacture, some of them made on the recently invented cylinder and
Fourdrinier machines. Technological developments will be noted, the business
exploits of prominent papermakers will be mentioned, and the lecture will be
illustrated with contemporary views of mills and manufacturing facilities.

Dear Al-Mutanabbi Street Poets, Printers, Book Artists, Writers, Artists, and
friends of the project.

We are in the last 60 days of our call to Book Artists and have signed on 169
participants as of this morning. Sarah and I want to make a maximum push in
these last two months to bring our total to 200 participating book artists.

So, if you are a writer, think about contacting an artist friend and
collaborating on a book for the project.

If you are a book artist, think about someone who should definitely be part of
this project and send either Sarah or myself their email address and a way to
look at their work.

If you teach in the book arts world, bring in the very best of your students!!

If you have been sitting on the fence and thinking about this for months, it's
time to stop over analyzing, just join us.

Here is a page that Sarah Bodman has created for this effort.

Sarah and I feel that finding 31 more great book artists in the next sixty days
is next to impossible, and this is why we want to do it!!

Help Us!!

Each Book Artist will have one year from the day they join to complete their
three books. Collaborations are more than welcome.

All my best,
Beau
