The PBS previews newsletter says that "Between the Folds" will be broadcast

nationally this Tuesday, Dec 8 at 10 -11 pm Eastern time. But that doesn't

mean that all PBS stations will be showing it then, so you may want to check

your local listings and this site:

http://www.greenfusefilms.com/screenings.html#/?i=2

In addition, there will be screenings with accompanying activities and

events around the country. See:

http://www.greenfusefilms.com/screenings.html#/?i=2

Television Premiere on PBS's Emmy-Award Winning Independent Lens
(CHECK LOCAL LISTINGS, as broadcast dates will vary significantly throughout
the month of December 2009)
  <http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/broadcast.html> www.pbs.org.

GREEN FUSE FILMS' award-winning documentary, Between the Folds, chronicles
the stories of 10 fine artists, theoretical mathematicians and intrepid
scientists who have abandoned conventional jobs and scoffed at hard-earned
graduate degrees - all to forge lives as modern-day paperfolders.

As these offbeat and varied characters converge on the unusual medium of
origami, they reinvent an ancient art, and illustrate the innumerable ways
that creativity and ingenuity come to bear in the age-old effort to
understand and honor the world around us - as artists, scientists, creators,
collaborators, preservers, and simply curious beings.

With "breathtaking" cinematography and a "haunting" original score featuring
the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the film paints an arresting portrait of
the mysterious artistic and scientific threads that fuel these remarkable
minds, bringing forth a rich mix of sensibilities towards art, abstraction,
science, creativity, and meaning.

Official Selection of over 25 international film festivals.

I know the woman who founded this group has moved to Tucson, but I'm wondering
if someone else is running it now? I referred a friend to it a few weeks ago, so
she applied to be a member, but her membership is still pending. This is rather
a long time to wait, so it made me wonder if no one is handling this sort of
administrative duty...

There is still room left in the Shrinemaking workshop with Sukey Hughes. In case
you didn't know, Sukey is a foremost authority on Washi paper making techniques
and has written a definitive book on the subject. Recently she donated her
collection of tools, photographs and other stuff to the
The Georgia Institute of Technology , home of The Robert C. Williams Paper
Museum, an internationally renowned resource on the history of paper and paper
technology. In addition to more than 2,000 books, the Museum features a
remarkable collection of over 10,000 watermarks, papers, tools, machines, and
manuscripts.

Shrinemaking Workshop with Sukey Hughes Five Wednesdays starting January 20th -
February 17th 1:30 - 4:30 Fee $225

Sukey pioneered the very popular shrinemaking class some years ago at Adult Ed
in Santa Barbara. She now is bringing it to the Art Clinic.
Shrines can be any size and range from the sacred to the profane to the humorous
to remembrance boxes. We will start with little matchbox shrines that open and
shut,
with a surprise inside each "shrine." From this we will advance to larger boxes,
such as Altoid cans, cigar boxes, deep frames, pencil boxes, antique boxes,
drawers, even
suitcases make great shrines. Go to www.artclinic.blogspot.com to learn more.

Backspace Book Arts welcomes polymer clay artist Dayle Doroshow back
to Los Angeles, March 6th and 7th 2010, for two new and exciting
classes. Don't miss this opportunity to learn new techniques from
one of the foremost polymer clay artists working in the country.
Classes are $100 each, all materials and tools included, and are
offered in sunny Santa Monica. Any questions, email or call
310/722-9004.

The Amazing Wavy Ripple Blade - $100
Saturday, March 6th 2010, 9am - 4pm

This unique cutting tool is used for creating incredible designs
using metallic polymer clay, stacks of thin sheets of colored clay
and a multitude of random designs made from scrap and Millefiore
canes and Mokume Gane designs. If this sounds like a foreign
language to you- don’t worry, the tool is user friendly and the
amazing techniques are easy to master and generate wondrous designs.
We will also play with the Mica Shift in the metallic clays and you
will have the opportunity to make jewelry and/ or book covers/collage
elements with the rippled designs.

Expressive Mask Vessels - $100
Sunday, March 7th 2010, 9am - 4pm

Let’s use African, Indonesian, and Asian masks as a starting point
for creating a hanging vase that will hold dried flowers, potpourri
or fresh flowers. We will start by looking at mask designs
throughout history for our inspiration. Learn several surface
techniques- transfers, carving and imprinting, colored clay designs,
to create a fabric of clay that will then be cut up and easily built
into a three-dimensional hanging vessel. The vessel will have many
places to add mixed media touches- beads, charms, feathers, fabric,
trims- that can dangle, be embedded, wrapped, or wired on to richly
embellish the vessel.

I am enormously proud to be bringing Andrea Peterson to my studio to teach
papermaking this April. I think of Andrea as a Living Treasure in the
field of hand papermaking. She can teach almost anything in this field, be
it how to grow a papermaking garden, how to do sculpture with high-shrinkage
abaca, how to process fibers for Japanese papermaking, or how to paint with
unbelievably rich colors of paper pulp. The latter is what she will be
teaching in April. Here are the details:

PAPER ON PAPER: Draw, Paint, & Stencil with Cotton Rag

Taught by Andrea Peterson, in California, April, 2010

This is an intensive workshop focusing on understanding and using pigments
(wet and powdered) with a finely beaten cotton rag. Papermaking agents such
as retention aid (dry and wet), sizing, and formation aid will assist in
creating vibrant and fluid images. We will use a variety of tools that for
drawing, painting and stenciling with the cotton rag onto a base sheet. This
workshop is for the student at any level.

Friday, April 9 - Sunday April 11 (Friday 6 - 9; Sat. & Sun. 10 - 4)

Fee: $315 (all materials included) The full amount of $315 is required to
reserve your spot. (The cut-off date to receive a full refund is March 9,
2010. Cancellations after this will be refunded 50%)

Checks made out to Littlewood Studios. Mail to: Jill Littlewood, 435 E.

Andrea Peterson is one of the most exciting and gifted teachers in the field
of handmade paper. She is a fine printmaker as well as a papermaker. She
has taught at Columbia College Chicago; the School of the Art Institute of
Chicago; Oxbow; Scoula de Graphica in Venice, Italy; Dieu Donne; the Center
for Book Arts in NYC; and Paper & Book Intensive at Arrowmont. She is on

These look great if anyone who reads this list is going to be on the East
Coast. I visited the WSW last fall and it is a wonderful place, set in the
country, near a tiny town that had good eats and a free puppet show that
afternoon. Delightful!

"In 2007, Bookbinders Workshop discovered 128 original Cooper Square
Gutenberg Bibles. Although these beautiful facsimiles were printed nearly 50
years ago, they had never been bound and the untrimmed sheets were found in
their original boxes. Drawing from solid historical precedence combined with
sound principles of conservation, it was decided that the masterwork
deserved a binding that was equally impressive as the printed text but must
also be reflective of Gutenbergs era. Bookbinders Workshop invested over two
years of research and development creating the authentic 15th-century-style
binding shown here."

Call to Artists

It is time for Book Art again. Ines Monguio will be curator again of the
Third Biannual Art of the Book show at Artist Union Gallery. All and any
artist books may enter. We have had books in canvas, cloth, Tyvek,
Plexiglas, organic materials, stone, coffee filters, and of course, paper.
Sizes have ranged from miniscule (1" x 2") to huge (6' x 3.5'). Content has
ranged from travel journals, abstracts with no text, to "The invisible man."
There have been books encased in handmade paper, and "censorable" books with
pages that could not be opened. Really, there are virtually no restrictions
to book art.

The juror will be announced later. Intake is scheduled Monday September 13
from 4 to 7, and Tuesday September 14 from 9 to 12. Books may be mailed.
Please contact the curator at monguio@... for further
information. The show will go from September 18 through October 24, 2010.

xxxxelena siff was going to do it but will be in the east coast till the
15.... we'll see if she can chnage her plan. of not, i'll need a juror....
