Hi all...

September 15th is the final deadline for applications to the BABA Book Arts Jam.

There are still a few free-of-charge tables available for
artists who would like to "display only" at the
eighth annual Bay Area Book Arts Jam
at Foothill College in Los Altos, CA (San Francisco Bay Area) on
Saturday October 17, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If you are an instructor please pass the word along to your students.
Exhibitors who would like to sell their works may reserve a table for $50.

This one-day celebration of the book arts, print arts and paper
arts is co-sponsored by Bay Area Book Artists and Foothill College. It
reaches out to audiences of all ages from the San Francisco Bay Area
and beyond who are interested in the book arts, including the allied
fields of letterpress printing, fine press publishing, zines,
papermaking, printmaking, photography, and the arts of decorating
paper. A major emphasis of the Book Arts Jam is on education outreach
and sharing information.

We'd like to invite to you to reserve a table at our Jam to display or
sell.  For an application please go to:

http://www.bookartsjam.org/ForExhibitors.php

For questions, email me at kacutter@....

We look forward to seeing you then!

I'm very curious just how these are made. Is there wire to give the paper
some structure, or am I just seeing creases? Looks very much like fabric.

Hello Book Artists and polymer clay lovers!
Backspace Bookarts is once again pleased to host olymer clay artist
extraordinaire, Dayle Doroshow. Dayle will be teaching two classes
in Santa Monica Nov. 7-8, illustrating her subtle mastery of the
medium of polymer clay. All skill levels welcome. For details or
more information, see below, or contact Marcia @ 310/729-1920 or
reply to this email. Class size is limited, so sign up today!
Hope you'll join us.
Marcia Moore, Backspace Bookarts

The Imitatives - Saturday, 7 November 2009 - 10am to 4pm - $100
(Materials included)
This workshop explores a cornucopia of imitative recipes for making
polymer clay that looks like the real thing. The class will focus on
recipes for ivory, amber, turquoise, jade and coral. After making the
clay body, we will create beads of all of these imitatives and
complete a necklace that also serves as a sampler of all the
techniques. Or you can create your "sampler" as a book of individual
tiles/pages of the different techniques.. Antiquing and ageing the
pieces will also be covered.

Rattles and Rattle Beads - Sunday, 8 November 2009 - 10am to 4pm -
$100(Materials included)
We’ll start off this spirited class by looking to ancient cultures as
our inspiration point to create rattles from beautifully designed
sheets and balls of polymer clay. Add the dimension of “fun” to your
art by incorporating sound. The rattles can be in many shapes, from
simple forms and handheld balls to more complex figures. We’ll spend
a some time brainstorming on shapes and we will explore the ways to
produce different sounds within the rattle. Techniques for surface
designs will be many and varied- Millefiore, texture and sculptural
elements.

[The 1930 film L'Idee] is described as the first serious, poetic, tragic

several layers of different types of paper
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper> from semi-transparent to thick
cardboard <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardboard>. Special effects like
halos, smoke and fog were made with lather spread on glass plates and lit
from behind. The film was based on a book of woodcuts

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frans_Masereel>, /The idea/. "The Idea"

featured a score by composer Arthur Honegger

very first use of an electronic instrument in film history.

It's interesting to see what can be done with paper and cardboard.

Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. The goal of
this art is to create a representation of an object using geometric folds
and crease patterns preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the
paper, and using only one piece of paper.

Won Park is a master of Origami. He is also called the "money folder", a
practitioner of origami whose canvas is the United States One Dollar Bill.

Bending, twisting, and folding, he creates life-like shapes in stunning
detail.

an origami artist named Won Park. If you put his name in google you can hit

Also, he lives in a garbage truck that is gorgeous inside - like a fancy

I got a query from Lanny Sherwin, below, and I wonder if anyone on this list
can help him out with information. Back in the days when we met once a
month for book arts meetings we had a few that were origami-oriented, one
with a student from UCSB who I have lost touch with. Any leads would be
appreciated.

Hi, Jill,

I'm interested in joining or forming an origami group in the Santa Barbara
area. I saw your Yahoo group and sent you a message but never heard back.
Any active folders in the area that you're aware of? I'm mostly interested
in doing it for my 12 year old son, who's pretty guru-ish for his age. We
were at the Pacific Coast Origami Conference last month and met families
from as far away as SLO & Orange Cty who said they'd travel here for a day
of folding.

Please let me know what you know!
Thanks,
Lanny
