I appreciate the 'diplomatic angle', Matthew.

Continuing the MAIB design-column is in part intended to let it be known to those who did not notice my work during Phil's and my collaboration across 15 years that this office is gradually easing back into design-work again.  Lot's to be done.  Including many 'left-overs' from the more tragic times.

Honestly, Susanne, I would take it as form of flattery. Jim Michalak's designs have long been part of this discussion group--a quick search shows over 2,400 messages mentioning "Michalak" going back to 1999.

Jim has taken on a few of Phil's many innovations--in this case the developed plywood sheet small boat, the Birdwatcher cabin and a fondness for lug sails--and continued to riff on those chords for quite a few years now, developing a stable of designs to fill a wide range of amateur builder needs. Jim would be the first to admit that he builds on the Bolger/Payson instant boat legacy and, I would add, with a touch of his own creativity.

I think that most of us consider Jim to be a Bolger "disciple," a tribute to Phil's lasting influence on amateur building and small boat design.

Cheers from Nairobi,

Matthew

I should reiterate what others have kindly suggested before, to keep track of the work out of this outfit, the best thing to do is to read Messing About In Boats (MAIB).  For the time being, this is the best window.

Web-Presence is worked towards. The point on that issue is to make sure that PB&F will get the Award for the Last Venture to have a formal Online-Presence via a Website...

In light of their patient efforts to make up for our challenges to get this done, I particularly appreciate the efforts by those who have collected online all sorts of sources on our work.  While not a complete record, that long listing and the visuals available by now should help those who are not sure what has been done here, give or take...

PCB + PB&F have been remarkably prolific, spanning seven decades now.  Not surprising that compiling together an online record of this opus would be a daunting monumental task.

I have tried to give it a kick start here:

Thanks for the robust support, Bruce.

A correction is in order though 'for the record':  Phil hung out his shingle in 1952.  So this office would now be in its 61st year.

Thank you Bruce.
    These images do help some.
But I'd state there continues to be a need to see Mission #1 engaged in by someone closer to Eureka, CA than I can be.  From San Francisco for instance, I believe it would be a good day round-trip on the Redwoods Highway (Route 101)...

Thanks for this effort to find images for her.

I would love to find a slot in my tight schedule to do this!  Judging from the photos online all being from a public beach opposite side of the channel, the best thing would be to bring a cartop rowboat to get good photo angles.

My bias and a statistical trick rounding up on something really impressive.  I'm counting decades.  Spanning 7 decades (five last century, 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's) and we are now in the second decade of this century 00's & 10's.

Bruce Hallman's remark that this design was a new one for him sort of stopped me cold.
As they say "I'll be darned..." - I'd rather someone did my socks...- but I could have sworn that Phil/we had run Design #410 in the decades-long MAIB Bolger-On-Design narrative.  But I seem to be mistaken.  Has anyone else another set of lenses through which to scan that stack of articles ?

I took a look at the pictures Bruce posted links to of the vessel.   Near as I can tell it was not featured in MAIB in past ten or so years.  Seems like you have found a follow-on topic to write up once that Navy landing craft/patrol boat splashes…

Now, about those study plans for a boat with Elco “happy smack” characteristics, and Bolger innovation and functionality…??  Awaiting your reply.

I am down in Napa Valley Marina for the winter. Here's why

http://www.hjboats.com/columbia38/index.html

Maybe I could borrow one of your boats, I have my long bed chevy with me. It has
a
rack and a camper shell that I am using for tool hauling.

500 mile round trip from here. It would be a bit before I could get to it---if
at all.

Hi Harry,

You always are welcome to borrow any of my boats.  They all are more than a bit neglected, but the Cartoon 5, Tortoise, and Kotick are stored on the roof of my garage in SF, and the Micro (sorely neglected in the marina by the ballpark) and the Topaz Spyder is in a boatyard in Dogpatch.  My spare time comes in very small chunks now-a-days with first priority being my health and marriage.  Followed by my day job, and this endless remodel of a money-pit 125 year old house.

Another factoid, the boat berthed just next to Phouma is the 'Coral Sea' which is owned and operated by the Humbolt State University Oceanography department.

This has to be the largest leeboarder in the world, or nearly so.

Is the hull flat bottomed with linear keel, and a rounded chine like with Resolution?

I would assume that our Chinese friends had/have (?) much larger leeboarders... But, perhaps not.
Slight arc bottom with hard-chine but a regular vee-bow with actually an intriguing inverted Vee intersection where 'lower' bow meets upper bow flare, visible from her forward quarters.
I'll do a MAIB piece, with Phil's perspective on this design.

If having a isometric model would help you in any way, I would be more than happy to make one to share. No pressure either way.  (I would just need to see the linesplan.)

I will put it on my want to do while I am down here list. I have always wanted
to
visit Humboldt Bay. I am trucking the boat to Puget Sound, then sailing it home
so
I won't get to see it by sea.

I might leave a day early here and stop by on the way north.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree there, Rocky. PCB was never afraid to
acknowledge the influence of other designers or even point a potential client to
another designer if that would be better match. He often acknowledged other
designers in his work. IIRC, he mentioned Jim Michalak in BWAOM as the
consulting engineer on the mast of his big steel leeboard sharpie motorsailer
for Pacific island commerce. Like I said, this group has long included Jim's
work in it's discussions. Cheers, Matthew

It looks like Phouma (Phuma) is a USCG registered vessel, details here:

Built by Dr. J. Gast a professor at Humbolt State University, between 1984 and 1991 I think.

The Bolger group is in fact all inclusive for boating and boatbuilding -
especially Bolger and Bolger-inspired. Any "on-topic" within that range is fair
game. The goal is to build more boats and promote and propagate PCB's and SA's
boats, plans, and ideas or even extrapolations.

Here's the group home page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group

}Description
}Discussing and building Philip C. Bolger's (1927-2009) boat designs }and
similar.
}
}This is a spam-free, on topic group - pretty much anything boating, }design, or
boat-building related is fair game. Please don't repost }Spam. Spammers and
flamers will be bounced off.

BTW, who here still dates back to Chris Noto's listserver from the 90's? Anyone?

Anyone wishing to discuss list mechanics/politics are welcome to email me
off-list. Otherwise, everyone's welcome here.
