Goodmorning all,
I own an old Bolens twelve horse Tecumseh cast iron motor Tractor with snow
thrower. I live in Maine. I am confused about what type of oil to use. I have
been told that you should never use detergent oil in one of these motors
however, I keep hearing about using 10/40 or 10/30 in the winter months(below
zero) sometimes. Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks and Happy Holidays to all, Blaze

I'm not sure if they're interchangeable. Best to find out posting this to the
list. Anyone know if the XL steering link works with the HT23?

I would get a can of gumout carb cleaner, remove the carb, disassemble and spray
every part down as well as blow out all orifices with gumout. Sounds like you
might have a dirty carburetor. Should be fairly easy to do.
Good Luck,
Kevin

According to the models and specifications chart it was only built for 2
years 1979 and 1980, some of the other XL models were built longer. Yes they
are a very good tractor, I have an H18XL and really like it. The biggest
concern with these tractor is the electronic ignition on the Tecumseh
engine, they are no longer available from Tecumseh so you have to find a
used one or modify that one if it quits. There is much more information at
the BolensTractorsClub and also on the tecumseh group about these engines. I
would think $200 would be fair if everything is solid, you can always
repower it since these tractors drive off of the flywheel, like many other
garden tractors out there do. The older Bolens drove off of the PTO end of
the engine and were harder to adapt another engine to. Good luck Jerrie

Hey Frederico
I think I have what you are looking for. I am scrapping out a HT 20. I have
not looked into the value of the Rims or hubs, but I will check into it if you
have not already found some. Tom

I had a simular problem with my HT20. It worked fine cold then acted up when
warmed up. Found out I had metal shavings in the trans fluid. Which in turn took
out the hydro pump. I purchased a new pump, replaced a gear and it has been
working great since. I had to purchase a Massey Ferguson swather pump because I
couldn't find a Bolens one. It was an expensive fix, but the tractor is well
worth the time and money.

A Few weeks ago I picked up a CHERRY HT-20D on e-bay .. it came a 54" deck,
like new snow plow and a set of tire chains. All the manuals were included also.
This tractor never saw a drop of rain .. it is one of the best kept Large
Frames .. I have ever seen. I bought it all for $1750
Today .. I picked up and HT-23 .. two decks .. two stage snow-blower .. tiller
and drive-shaft .. plus a custom made .. rear counter balance weight .. filled
with lead .. all kinds of extra pins.. parts
The tractor has "like new" tires front and rear.
That entire package cost me .. $450 .. I am still in shock .. the best deal I
have come across in a LONG time

Wanted to let yall know, especially those who gave me directions in how to fix
the problem, that the charging issues I had with my HT23 are now fixed. I
replaced the regulator, but still nothing. Yesterday I replaced the
battery....voila! So that may have been the whole problem, but I'm sure the
regulator had to be replaced anyway. Thanks everyone.
