Quick curiosity question...As a Model railroader since 1975, I have heard
the term "pike"...what are the origins of this word, and what is the exact
meaning?

I am planning to build a 3 1/2' x 7' layout sometime this fall that will
be very close to the Redwing Central in the Kalmbach book, Small Model
Railroads, Vol. II. My layout will have an outside yard and a mainline,
with plenty of spurs. Terrain will be mountains, although I haven't
settled on a particular region. Period will be early 1970s so I can run
BN/GN/NP/SP&S/CB&Q lashups.
I am planning to use Kato Unitrack and am purchasing switches at the
rate of 2-3 per month, in addition to my diesel and freight car
purchases.
Sievers sent me a brochure on preassembled benchwork. However, I'm
thinking about building the benchwork out of extruded foam according to
the Mountain Modelcraft web site. Has anyone had any experience with
this kind of thing?
I am looking at using the forthcoming Walthers mountain sawmill and
paper factory that appeared in BLW's July 1998 newsletter as my
principal industries.
Well, I have two. One in the works and one in the planning stages. The
one under construction is a generic NW pike on an interior door.
The one in the planning stages is a two-level layout of the UP and BNSF
between Seattle and Tacoma, WA.

I'm awaiting a move (within the next three months) which will provide
ample space for an expanded switching pike depicting a fictional
junction point on the CB&Q's n/s line, half way between Hannibal & St.
Louis during WW II. It looks like you'll see the track plan in RMC by

BN (...maybe BNSF).
I model the segment between Bieber and Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Which was constructed by Great Northern in 1939 to compete with SP.
Recent offerings by Walthers, allowed changes in operation to Lumber
and Grain.
( Selling my intermodal equipment - anyone interested in buying- email

I use mostly Athearn Diesels, with Athearn and Roundhouse rolling
stock.
Due to lack of scenery, I tend to think of my layout as the "plywood
pacific".
A small section of scenery has been started around the Lumber Mill.
But, with literally 100's of trees planned, I still have along way to
go.....one at a time.
I have been trying the "latest" methods of scenery construction.
But, with minimal satisfaction ... I will probably return to the old
methods.
I am in the middle of constructing a 20' x20' room in my back yard. It
will be
home for my layout in about 12 to 18 months. In the mean time, my
brother
will be calling it home. We have taken to calling the room "Kato's

Thanks, Randy.
A good friend of mine saw the following at Eola, IL on July 12th:
BNSF GP9 #1626 (ex-BN) which has been repainted. This unit looked
sharp.
BNSF SW1200 #3505 was also there repainted.

Hello everyone, I would like to know if anyone has seen photos of any
of the kodachrome C30-7`s on the net or in published form. I own the
1997 BNSF Motive Power annual just released. There is one shot printed
and I understand that there is also one in CTC board. I am looking for
as many photos as I can find so that I may begin building a fairly
accurate model. The many color variations of this road along with leased
power makes it truly unique. The BNSF has in my opinon truly found a
place in railroad (FANatisism), If that is an exceptable term. I have
coined a new term that truly reflects my feelings ATSF/BNSF 4-LIFE
A question for all you GN fans out there:
On page 84 (bottom) of Joseph W. Shine, _Great Northern Color
Pictorial_, Vol. 2, is a photo of a GN SD9 pulling an SP&S caboose at
Hillyard in October 1969. At the extreme left is what appears to be a
ribside GN boxcar in glacier green and silver roof with roofwalk missing
and with huge white slant serif letters spelling out "Great Northern."
Did the GN have boxcars of this type? Is a model of it available in N
scale? Thanks.
Thanks to those who replied letting me know I'm getting through!
Just to get some activity going, here is a summary about my trip last week.
I went to the SFRH&MS convention in Flagstaff (I admit I'm really an ATSF
fan). On Tues. 7/7 I followed the BNSF from Arrowhead Jcn. (west of
Needles) to Williams, visited Williams junction Wed 7/8 morning before
riding the Grand Canyon Rwy, and caught a few trains in the afternoon as I
cruised over to Flagstaff. Thurs and Fri 7/9 and 7/10 were convention days,
but there was plenty of time for BNSF chasing. I went eastward to Winslow
one day, and westward along the Crookton line change the other day.
Tuesday 7/7 train activity was incredible, probably averaged every 20 min or
so! After that it seemed to taper off through the week; I only saw 2
movements through the line change in a 3 hour period on Fri 7/10. I've
decided the BNSF should have the nickname "rainbow railroad" as there are so
many paint schemes and variations out there. Plus there is leased/borrowed
power; I saw units from Helm, LRC, EMD, Soo, NS, and CP Rail.
The winning consist of the trip was a "helper" set tagged on the rear of an
eastbound at Topock AZ; nine units in seven schemes! Most consists I saw
were mixed schemes of ATSF/BNSF/BN heritages; I only saw 3 solid ATSF
consists, and 1 solid BN consist;
there were a few solid BNSF consists too (green/orange schemes). I
personally feel the green/orange scheme "clashes" horribly with the
red/silver scheme; they just do not go together at all. They both look
great by themselves, but mix them together in a lashup and hold on to your
stomach.
On the freight car side, I saw several 5-unit sets of Gunderson stack cars
in mineral brown with white BNSF lettering (I think this is like the Athearn
model?). Also saw an ex-SFLC Gunderson (red scheme) remarked for BNSF! Not
to mention some of the brown WFE reefers, and assorted trailers, containers,
gons, hoppers, and boxcars in BNSF.
My last day (Sat 7/11) I took the long way back through Clarkdale to see the
Arizona Central (two ex-Alaska FP7's in green/cream with big eagle artworks
on sides), and Parker to see the Arizona & California (GP30's, GP35's, 200
ton crane, station, speeder, and mailbox all in green/cream/yellow !). Once
I got back to BNSF land near Needles, I was taken aback by the talking
detectors. They read out the temperature at the end of transmission ... can
you say "one-hundred-seventeen degrees"? Thank God for air conditioning.

New dash-9's are Heritage Two. The difference between 739, 740 and 745 is
the bottom stripe is two stripes not three. And of the dash-9's you see
running around with no stripes are to get the heritage two striping. A
great source for pictures is:

Lots of Dash-9's, mostly Heritage One and a few SD70MAC's in Heritage
colors.

Actually, hasn't BNSF decided to do away with the Yellow letters ?
I thought the latest version of the Dash9's was back to Heritage One.
I could be wrong.

Wait a minute....this is the BNsf list. Let's not bring those Santa Fe
ideas here.
<GRIN>
Actually the BN Green was chosen to symbolize the forest lands which the
RR
runs through.
>the creme color used in the Greinstein Green colored SD70MAC's. Where
>did this come from ?
Railfan rumor has it that the paint scheme was chosen by MRS. G'stein.
A local Railfan / Artist claims to have designed the paint scheme. But,
other than his mother, has nothing to back up his claim.
My thought on a paint scheme ?
The old Burlington Silver and Red would have been an acceptable
compromise.
And, had not someone else used it (RailTex ?), the Red and Gray variation
of the
BN (green and black ) paint scheme- is kinda eye catching.
( almost a Burlington throw back )
Just a thought,
Wesley

The creme color was Mrs. Greinstein's idea, and, like her husband, it too will
go away. Nothing after SD70MAC 9837 received this color. What a poor choice
of colors for a locomotive hauling coal.

My idea of a BNSF paint job would be yellow numbers and lettering , bright
silver trucks and fuel tank, red war bonnet
with yellow outline strip on a BN green car body. This would also represent
what happened financially with the BN green
being the largest color. What is the story on the BN green. I read it was
associated with a ruthless corporate image.
When the Great Northern pumpkin was associated with all that was right
about railroading. The one color I dislike is
the creme color used in the Greinstein Green colored SD70MAC's. Where did
this come from ? Hope it goes away.

I run/collect BN in the early post-merger era. My freight diesels
include a mix of BN, CB&Q, GN, and NP. I am developing a 3 1/2' x 7'
layout, the location of which is yet to be determined, but will be in
the Pacific Northwest.
Jeff,
Good starting question.
I model the "old " Inside Gateway. Bieber, Ca. to Klamath Falls, Or. HO
Scale.
Contemporary....at least through the White Face with Pin Stripe stage.
I'm having a hard time deciding if the BNSF merger has taken place or
not.
I do own 3 Dash9's, two heritage and one warbonnet. But, they could be
sold,
should I finally decide.

Wes,
I was about to ask the same question. At least now I know this list works
and that I am not the only one on it.
So now for some BNSF stuff. Anyone know the whereabouts of BNSF 666 (this
unit has always got my attention. I even have a model of ATSF 666).
Actually, has this unit officially become BNSF 666 yet?

I don't see the 1604 listed on the "renumbering" lists we got from Keel.
Where's Keel when you need him ?? Oh yeah, he's on the "other"

Hi everyone,
Can someone help me with information about the BNSF line around Whitefish M.T.
for a modestly prototypical layout I am planning.
I would like to know what industries (and even companies) the BNSF services from
Whitefish M.T. up to and including Kalispel and Eureka. Looking at maps
downloaded from Yahoo, I see a lot of railway lines running down to Flathead
Lake near Kalispel but do not know what industries are there. I am also
interested as to what runs up to Eureka. It seems to be an important line
running up specially to Eureka from the main line at Stryker.
What freight cars are used in the area? Are there intermodal facilities around?
Is Grain and lumber a major commodity or are Box cars mainly used. Where do the
locals run from?
I have 2 Videos on the area being the "Burlington Northern Funnel" by Pentrex
and Big E Productions "BNSF on Marias Pass". As good as these videos are showing
main line traffic, there is very little on "local" runs and industries in the
area.
I get the Trains and Model railroader mags, visit the BNSF site and surf many of
the train related sites in America looking for anything possible.
I live in South Africa, and have unfortunately not had the opportunity of
visiting the United States, so as can be imagined I am very in the dark with
regards the above information and need any help possible. No matter how small.
(One of my wishes is to railfan the area one day!!!!!)
Finally I am trying to locate a copy of Bob Del Grosso's "Burlington Northern:
Railroad Giant of the Pacific Northwest" (Out of print). If anyone is selling a
copy or knows of someone selling a copy (any condition), please let me know.
Thanking you all for any help,
Many regards
Glynn Chamberlain.
P.S. It's fantastic now having a BNSF list. I hope it is used as much as the
Santa Fe list.
