Hi Charlie,

Yup, that's my reefer back there. I started with a Walthers cryogenic reefer,
rebuilt the ends with sheet styrene, and scratch-built the reefer end using one
of the A-Line Reefer units, sheet and strip styrene, and a lot of patience. I
used the fuel tank that A-Line provides, with styrene tubing to extend it to the
whole width of the car. The difficult thing about the car is having to splice
the floor to move the truck on the reefer end closer to the "new" end, since
you're extending the car's length by a few feet, so the truck center's would be
off if you left it as is. With this, you have to rebuild the swing coupler
mechanism too, which proved to be rather difficult.

Thanks a lot, and let me know if I can be of any more help,
Jeff Carlson

Hi there.

This model started with a factory-painted, Athearn Blue Box Conrail GP38-2. I
had decals made by Eric at ELS trains.

www.elstrains.com

If you go there and write him, he'll likely be able to make a set for you, and
they're VERY reasonably priced.

Well, these shots are actually from about a month ago now, but I figured I'd
share them with the group.

After seeing the prototype here in Topeka, I decided to build a model of
BNSF 2049, the first of the ex-GMTX "Smurfs" to be released from the shops.

FTC clears BNSF takeover; Berkshire plans stock split

The Federal Trade Commission has given Berkshire Hathaway antitrust
approval for its planned takeover of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.,
operator of BNSF Railway. The approval, which was expected, appeared Monday in a
list of antitrust clearances routinely issued by the FTC.

Berkshire has offered to pay $26.4 billion for the 77.4% of BNSF that it
does not now own. Combined with previously owned shares and $10 billion in debt,
the takeover is valued at around $44 billion.

Berkshire has also filed a preliminary proxy statement with the Securities
and Exchange Commission giving notice that it has set Jan. 20 for a special
shareholders meeting in Omaha. Shareholders will be asked to approve a 50-for-1
split of Berkshire's Class B shares. The higher-priced Class A shares will not
be affected.

The split would bring Berkshire Hathaway's Class B shares down to about
$66 each from their current level of around $3,300.

Berkshire's Warren Buffett said earlier in an interview with CNBC that the
split will enable "anybody that has as little as one share of BNSF to opt for
the tax-free exchange ... So those small shareholders can have exactly the same
availability that otherwise would only have been available to a big
shareholder."

Hi Tom
I own 6 Athearn SD70MACs and 3 Kato SD70MACs. I give Kato a slight edge over the
Athearn units. Both models are fairly detailed and run smooth and quiet. Both
are about equeal in terms of pulling power. The Athearn SD70MAC will M.U. with
other athearn units with little problem. The Kato models dont M.U. with any
other model maanufacturer other than another kato unless DCC is involved.
Parts are availible from both manufacturers

Where Kato really shines is in train handling. Like Cornelius I also run 36 car
coal trains up and down a 1.8% grade on a helix. While two of either SD70MAC
can handle a train of this size and length albeit with a bit of wheel slip, a
third unit lessens wheel slip. The Katos climb and hold the train on the down
grade without a lot of throttle adjustments as is the case for the Athearns. The
Kato SD70MACs provide superior train handling over the Athearn MACs. Also Katos
drive line and trucks are more durable and track better than Athearn which
require disassembly and adjustments to get the same results.

Both are Good models but the Kato has less problems right out of the box.

hope this helps

Hi Tom,

As the owner of about 10 Kato SD70MAC's I'd say go with a Kato.
The Kato's run very smooth and look quite nice. I sometimes run 36 car coal
trains with two Kato SD70MAC's up front and one at the rear without any
problem.

On the other hand, some people think the Athearn SD70MAC has better detail.
But from other Athearns in my collection I know these details can be very
fragile. And sometimes the parts haven't been applied correctly or with
large glue stains.
Kato's don't have this problem.

Overall I think Kato offers better value for the $, even if the price is a
bit higher than Athearn.

Greetings, Cornelius Koelewijn.

the best one to purchase and why? Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

has anyone attempted to use the bachmann full dome car for the bay view? I
already have a set of TSP trucks, was thinking bout adding wire grabs and such.
Thoughts, comments? I have seen some Lambert brass cars, but, heard the quality

Some of the Rapido BN executive cars are right on except for the fluting. If I

cars right there! Riss
