"Delusions of Dunya"

"...The life of this world is nothing but an illusion."
[al-Hadeed - 57:20]

"With firm words, Allah makes the believers steadfast in
the life of this world and in the hereafter;
and Allah lets the wrongdoers go astray.
Allah does what He pleases."
[Ibrahim - 14:27]

Assalamu 'alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

A person deeply involved in this worldly life puts his faith on the apparent meanings. A man might think that wealth makes him strong, gives him status and adorns him. We think that the medicines we eat cure us. We think the food we eat keeps us alive otherwise we will die. Our deep involvement in this Dunya forces us to believe that those who have the material support are more successful than the others. However, if one were to explore the domains of destiny, one would experience the reality that these ideas are nothing but illusions. Allahu Ta'ala says in the Quran that the life of this world is nothing but an illusion of materials (wama al-hayatud-dunya illa mata'ul-ghuroor).

"Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, a show and boasting among yourselves, a quest for greater riches and more children. Its similitude is that of vegetation that flourish after rain: the growth of which delights the tillers, then it withers and you see it turn yellow, soon it becomes dry and crumbles away. In the hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure. The life of this world is nothing but an illusion." Al-Quran [al-Hadiid - 57:20]

Man wastes his lifetime running after something which has no effect on anything except that he ruins his hereafter. A believer is he who believes that nothing can happen without the Will of Allahu ta'ala. Therefore, his objective becomes to gain Allah's pleasure and not to run after this Dunya (World). No material possession can benefit or harm anyone if it is not desired by Allah. The principles say: Fire does not burn if Allah's Will is there. Cure comes from Allah, not from the doctor or the medicines. Nor does anyone die without His Will. Therefore, a Believer's trust should be on nothing and nothing but Allah alone, consequently Allah says: "..Allah is all sufficient for the person who puts his trust in Him..." [at-Talaaq - 65:3].

Prophet Dawud ('alaihi salam) was among the army of Talut ('alaihi salam). Recalling what Dawud ('alaihi salam) said to Jalut (Goliath): "You may have armor, shield, and sword, but I face you in the name of Allah, the Lord of the Israelites, Whose laws you have mocked. Today you will see that it is not the sword that kills but the will and power of Allah!". Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ('alaihi salato was-salam) had a great degree of faith. The Sahabah say to the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam): "By Allah, if you were to ask us to cross this sea and you plunged into it, we would plunge into it with you; not a man would stay behind". It is with this faith that these men were prepared to do anything for Allah's Deen, without worrying about the effects of any physical law. Because they know the reality which we find difficult to accept. Ayaat of the Qur'an contain reality & wisdom in them. Allah says: "Wainnahu lahaqqu al-yaqeen" "And Verily, it (this Quran) is an absolute truth with certainty." [al-Haqqah - 69:51]. The laws contained in this Qur'an are valid for all times to come, therefore we should never let any doubt find way into our hearts. Observe the following.

"But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said:
'How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allahs Leave?'
And Allah is with As-Sabirin (the patient ones)"

[al-Baqarah - 2:249]

"...And there is no victory except from Allah.
Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise."
[al-Anfaal - 8:10]

"O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah,
He will help you, and make your foothold firm."

 [Muhammad - 47:7]

Whenever Muslims placed their Trust in Allah, Allah helped them. And whenever they relied on the worldly materials and numbers, they were deprived of Allah's help. Muslims lacked every material resource at Badr, but they were helped by Allah because of their Faith in Allah. But in Hunayn Muslims were well equipped in everything, however many of them relied on these resources until the earth became tight for them and they realised that it is not the material things that profit but it is the help of Allah that gives success. Therefore, a believer does not rely on the material resources, even if the resources are in abundance.

"Allah has indeed helped you in many battlefields and on the day of Hunayn: when you were proud of your great numbers, but the numbers availed you nothing. The earth, with all its vastness, seemed to close in upon you, and you turned your backs and fled. But Allah sent down His Sakeenah (peace and tranquility) upon His Messenger and the believers and sent down to your aid those forces which you could not see, and punished the unbelievers. Thus was the recompense for the unbelievers."  [at-Taubah - 9:25-26]

This world is made deceptive in such a way where the food obtained with illegal money tastes same as the food obtained with legal money. Similarly the criminals think there will be no recompense for their mischief. After all who would dare to stand against someone with the superpower? What superpower? Who is going to save them if Allah sends heavy stones or fireballs from the sky? Sayyidina Ibrahim ('alaihi salato was-salam) says: "why should I fear when the wrongdoers don't fear Allah?". Why fear from the criminals when they don't fear the Lord of the heavens and earth?

"[Ibrahim says:] Why should I fear your idols,
when you are not afraid of your actions of making them partners with Allah,
for which He has not given you any sanction?
Which one from the two parties of us deserves to feel secure?
Tell me, if you know the truth."

[al-An'aam - 6:81]

How nice is the case of those who struggle for their rights; strive for the rights of others; struggle to defend the land of the Prophets; or defend the Deen of Allah!

How nice is the case of those who struggle without any weapon! How about the example of Prophet Zakariyah (Zechariah, 'alaihi salam) who was slaughtered because he was upholding the Deen of Allah. How about Sayyidina Yahya (John, 'alaihi salam), who also lost his neck for upholding the Book of Allah. They also plotted against Sayyidina Isa (Jesus, 'alaihi salam) but he was saved by the Will of Allahu ta'ala. Every soul has to return one day, but the successful will be those who return with His pleasure and with the fear of nothing but His alone. We should hope to join these people too (insha'Allah).

Allah was watching those people before us. He is watching us too. Allah says: "Consider not that Allah is unaware of that which the Zalimoon do, but He gives them respite up to a Day when the eyes will stare in horror. (They will be) hastening forward with necks outstretched, their heads raised up (towards the sky), their gaze returning not towards them and their hearts empty (from thinking because of extreme fear)." [Ibrahim - 14:42-43].

"So think not that Allah will fail to keep His Promise to His Messengers.
Certainly, Allah is All-Mighty, - All-Able of Retribution."
[Ibrahim - 14:47]

If we could have even a glimpse of the Majesty of Rahmaan, we would start to run over the oceans. If we could even recognise the beauty of our souls as being His beautiful gifts, we would not hesitate to move the high mountains. And if we could even understand that His Word, the Qur'an is the Absolute Truth, we would start to see the huge mountains moving aside from our path.

Now, lets learn from the instructions of Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) given to Abdullah Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: " Boy, I would like to teach you something. Be careful and follow Allah's commands perseveringly. Allah will protect you. You should safeguard His rights, and you will always find Him with you; if you need something, ask Allah, and when you need help, solicit Allah alone for the same. Bear it in mind that if all the people combined together to grant you some benefit, they would not be able to do so except that which Allah has determined for you and that if all of them were combined together to do you harm, they would not be able to do so except that which Allah has determined for you. The pens have been set aside and the writings of the book of fate have become dry." [ Tirmidhi]

"Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honor, He is free from what they ascribe to Him!
Peace be on the Messengers, and praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds."
Al-Quran [37:180-182]

wa Assalamu 'alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

Abdullah ibn Adam

 MOTHER DEATH
موت أم

أسف ربما جرحت مشاعرك عندما أرسلت لك هذه الصور.
, sorry maybe I hurt u when I sent this pics to u

ولكن بعد أن أستلمتها وكنت على وشك محو الصور
مثلها مثل إيميلات أخرى لاتهمنى
أخذت منى الصور لحظه أخرى قبل إلغاؤها

but after i received  it and was going to delete it like many e mails i dont care about thought a second before deleting
بالنظر إلى آخر نظرة للأم وهي تمعن النظر لوجه أبنها
I looked at the mother while she looking at her son face
( لقد كانت آخر نظره قبل وفاتها )
It was the last look before she die
وتساءلت؟
ماذا كانت تريد أن تقوله و لم تستطيع؟

And I asked my self
What she wanted to say and couldn't?

She would want to say:
Bye my son
Bye my heart
Will leave u now
in a world doesn't know it but god I
i didnt ask much
i just asked to educate u
and take care of u
وفي نفس الوقت وضعت نفسى مكان الابن
الذي تلفظ أمه أنفاسها الأخيره
وهي غارقة في دماؤها بين يديه
ولا يستطيع عمل شيء إلا البكاء و النواح

in the same time i put my self in the son position while he is watching his mother dieng in his arms and the blood on her face
And he can't do anything
Just crying and crying
وجدت الدموع تخرج من عيني و كأنها تقول:
لماذا قتلتم أمى ؟؟؟؟؟
ماذا سأفعل بدونها ؟؟؟؟؟
كيف سأعيش بلا أم؟؟؟؟؟؟؟؟؟

I found my self crying and my tears saying
?
Why u killed my mom
What I will do without her?
????
Live without mother how I will

So I sent it to all my friends
Maybe this child fined anyone share feelings with him
Or
Prevent this
Brutal aggression

أخي العزيز من السهل جدا أن نكون
أو يكون أبناؤنا في موقف الولد أو الأم. .

Might be you or me in this case
أرجو مساعده أخوتنا في فلسطين

Narrated Humran, the slave of Uthman (May Allah be pleased with him) : I saw Uthman bin Affan asking for a tumbler of water, (and when it was brought) he poured water over his hands and washed them thrice and then put his right hand in the water container and rinsed his mouth, washed his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out, Then he washed his face and forearms up to the elbows thrice, passed his wet hands over his head and washed his feet up to the ankles thrice, Then he said: Allah's Messenger (May peace be upon him) said: (( If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-Rak'at Salat (prayer) during which he does not think of anything else then his past sins will be forgiven )).

WUZU

Cleanliness

Method of performing Ablution (Wuzu) :

When you want to perform ablution, follow these steps -:

First of all make the intention of ablution and then say 'Bismillla Hirrahma Nirrahim' and wash both hands upto the wrists.

Then perform Miswak (clean teeth with a wooden stick).
Then by using the right hand, gargle three times and wash the inside of the mouth, ensuring that the water reaches upto the throat and also all the gums and underneath the tongue. If there is anything stuck on or between the teeth, then release it.

Then by using the right hand suck up the water in the nose until it reaches the bone and clean the insides of the nostrils by using the left hand thumb and little finger, three times.

After this, take water into the cup of both hands and wash the whole of the face three times, from the start of the forehead where the hair begins to grow, down to and including the chin. Also from the right hand ear lobe to the left hand one, ensuring that no place is left dry. If you have a beard then also wash this and also run your fingers through it. However, if you are wearing an Ehraam then don't run your fingers through the hair.

Wash both arms upto and including the elbows three times. Washing the right arm first three times, then the left arm three times.

Then perform Masah once, meaning join the fingertips of both hands together leaving out the index fingers and the thumbs on both hands. Then run water on these six fingers and then brush them over the hair, starting from the forehead and ending at the back of the neck. This is done once, ensuring that the palms of the hands and the index fingers and thumbs do not touch the head. Now bring fourth the hands by using the palms and rubbing them at either side of the head. Then clean the inside of the ears by using the index fingers and the back of the ears using the thumbs. Now wash the back of the neck by rubbing the back of the hands on either side of the neck, but ensure that the hands do not go on the throat as this would be Makrooh (disliked).

Then wash the right foot, from the toes upto and including the ankles, three times. The perform the same three times for the left foot. Ensure that you wash between the toes.
The ablution (Wuzu) is complete and so pray this Dua ; 'Allahummajalni Minattawwabeena Wajalni Minal Mutatahhireen' .

Then take the water and stand up and drink some, as this is cure for the illnesses.
Then look towards the sky and pray; 'Subhanaka Alllahumma Wa Behamdika Ashhadu An La ilaha illa Anta Astagfiruka Wa Atoobo ilaik'

Also pray the Kalima Shahaadat and Sura Inna Anzalna. It is also better if you pray Bismilla and the Durood Sharif when washing every part, also pray Kalima Shahaadat. The above is the method of performing Ablution.

Out of these some actions are obligatory and if they were missed the ablution would not count. Some aspects are Sunnat and to miss deliberately would be an act of punishment. Some aspects are Mustahhab and to miss them would mean a reduction in reward.

Obligatory aspects of ablution (Wuzu)  :

There are four point in ablution that are obligatory.
1. To wash the face . Meaning from the beginning of the forehead where hair starts growing upto the bottom of the chin. Also from one ear to the other ear. To ensure that the skin of the face is washed once leaving no part dry.
2. To wash both hands upto and including the elbows once.
3. To perform Masah of one quarter of the head. Meaning to run wet hands over a quarter of the head and at least so that the hair gets wet slightly.
4. To wash both feet upto the ankles once. The above four aspects are obligatory in ablution. Except for these, whatever methods have been reported are either Sunnat or Mustahhab. There are many Sunnats and Mustahabs in ablution and if you would like to know these in detail, then consult larger books such as 'Bahar-e-Shariat' or 'Fatawa-e Razvia'.

Rule : To wash a part means to at least pour two drops of water over each part. To spread water over the parts lightly and not washing the part thoroughly and therefore the ablution or bathing would not count.

Rule : To wash the skin above and below the lips, nails, eyes, the hair on eyelashes, eyebrows, the skin underneath jewellery and even the hole pierced in the nose, the skin underneath the mouchtache hair and beard hair and every part or every part in the four parts mentioned is obligatory. If a pinpoint of it was left dry then the ablution will not count.

Rule : It is obligatory to perform ablution for Namaz, Sijdah-e-Tilawat or touching the Quran and it is necessary (Wajib) to perform ablution to perform Tawaf.

Makroohats (dislikes) of ablution Meaning the aspects that should not be done in ablution.

1. To perform ablution with the leftover water of ablution or bath performed by a female.
2. To spill water on a dirty place.
3. To perform ablution inside the mosque.
4. To spill used ablution water back into the bucket that contains the ablution water.
5. To spit out water or mucus etc. towards Qibla.
6. To talk of worldly things without cause.
7. To waste water unnecessary.
8. To use so little water so that all or some of the Sunnats would be missed.
9. To wash the face with one hand.
10. To throw water on the face.
11. To let ablution water drops on clothing or inside the mosque.
12. To miss any Sunnat of ablution.

Aspects that break the Ablution

1. Excretion of stools
2. Urinate
3. To break wind from behind
4. For worms or stones to be excreted from the front or rear
5. For the leaking of semen water or sperm.
6. For blood, puss to be released and for it to flow from it's position.
7. For a mouthful of vomiting of food or water, or a slight amount of vomit of blood.
8. To become insane or to pass out
9. To faint
10. To be drunk or lost in control so much that the feet stagger
11. Except for the Namaz-e-Janaaza, to laugh so loud that the person standing next to you can hear you.
12. To go to sleep.
13. Mubashart-e-Fahisha (meaning, for a man to touch a woman's private parts with his erected penis with lust or to touch another man's private parts with his erected penis, or for a woman to touch another woman's private parts with her private parts without a cloth in between these parts. In all the above situations the ablution (Wuzu) will break.

Rule : If water is released from a hurting eye or puss that is released will break the Wuzu, and it is also an impurity and therefore if it touches an item of clothing, then it is necessary to clean.

Rule : To laugh in Namaz that only you hear it yourself and no-one near you hears the laughter or voice then the Wuzu has not broken, however, the Namaz will break.

Rule : If you smile in Namaz so that only your teeth show but no voice whatsoever is heard then neither the Wuzu or Namaz will break.

Rule :Whatever moisture that leaves a man's body but does not break the Wuzu is not an impurity. For example the blood that stays in it's position or vomit that is not a mouthful are all clean.

Rule : Saliva, spittle, sweat and dirt are not impurities and therefore clean (Pak). If these items are stuck on the body or clothing, then the Namaz will count but you should have them cleaned as this is better.

Rule : The tears that come out due to crying do not break the Wuzu nor are they an impurity.

Rule : By showing your knees or body, or to look at your own or someone else's body or touch someone's body does not break the Wuzu.

Rule : If a milk drinking child vomited and if it is a mouthful then it is an impurity. If it touches something and is more than a Dirham (approx. size of a fifty pence piece) then it will make it impure. If the milk had not gone all the way in the stomach but had come back out from the throat then it is clean.

Rule : Whilst in the middle of performing Wuzu it breaks then perform the Wuzu again, and if the water that is held in the palm of the hand and you release wind then this water is useless and do not use it to wash any parts.

Method Of Bathing The method of bathing is as follows;

1. Perform the intention of bathing (Ghusl) then first of all wash the hands upto the wrists three times.
2. Then wash the private parts, whether there is any impurity stuck on them or not.
3. Then wash any part of the body which has impurity stuck on it.
4. Then perform Wuzu as performed in Namaz but do not wash the feet. However, if you are sat on a     stool or a stone etc. then wash the feet also.
5. Then rub water into the body as you would rub oil.
6. Then wash the right hand shoulder three times.
7. Then wash the left hand shoulder three times.
8. Then wash the head and all of the body three times.
9. Then move away from the place of bathing and if you did not wash the feet when performing Wuzu, wash them now. Do not face the Qibla when bathing. Ensure that you rub your hands with water all over the body whilst scrubbing. Do not bathe where someone can see you. If this is not possible then it is necessary for you to cover the body from the navel to the knees (for men). If this is not possible then perform Tayammum (see later text). Do not talk when bathing or pray any prayers. After bathing, to dry the body with a towel is perfectly allowed.

Rule : To bath naked in a careful hidden place (where no-one can see) is allowed. It is very important that women are very careful of this. After bathing wear clothes as soon as possible. Whatever aspects are Sunnat and Mustahhab in Wuzu are also the same in bathing except, if you are bathing naked then do not face Qibla and if you are wearing a cloth then there is no problem. There are three obligatory aspects in the method of bathing that has been shown, without which the bathing will not count and one will remain unclean and the rest are either Sunnat or Mustahhab and should not be left out, but if they are left out the bath will still count.

Three obligatory aspects of bathing :

There are three obligatory aspects in bathing, and are as follows;

1. To perform mouthwash so that every single part of the inside of the mouth from the beginning of the lips upto the throat is cleaned with water. Water must reach the gaps between the teeth, the gums, all the sides of the tongue and the edge of the throat. If you are not fasting then you must gargle so that the water reaches clearly all parts. If there is anything stuck in the teeth (like strands of meat, the skin of a betel nut, the leaf of a paan etc.) then unless it is impossible to release or would cause serious pain it is necessary that they are removed, because without doing this the bath won't count and therefore the Namaz won't count.
2. To clean the nose out with water. Meaning to suck up water into both nostrils until it reaches the bone, so that not even a hair or it's equivalent size remains dry, otherwise the bath will not count. If the nose is pierced then the water must reach the hole as this is also necessary. If mucus has dried in the nose then to release it is necessary and to wash the nostril hair is also necessary.
3. To wash every single part of the body. Meaning to make sure water washes all the body upto and including the soles of the feet, ensuring that every hair and every pimple is washed, because even if only one hair or it's point's equivalent remains dry, the bath will not count. Notice. A lot of people bathe by wearing an unclean cloth and think by bathing they will become clean and at the same time wash the cloth that they are wearing. This is not the case because when they rub their hands on it they actually spread the impurity all over and therefore make the whole body, cloth and the container of water unclean. This is why before bathing it is important to wash the impurity stuck on the body or on the clothing, otherwise they won't clean the body but in fact make everything that they touch unclean. This is possible if they are bathing in a river or sea and the impurity is such that it will flow away without the need for rubbing or scrubbing, if this is not so then it will remain a problem.

What aspects makes it obligatory to bathe :

There are five aspects that make it obligatory for a person to have a bath, and they are as follows;

1. The ejaculation of sperm from it's place with lust.
2. To have a wet dream. Meaning nocturnal emission that is the releasing of sperm whilst sleeping.
3. The head of the penis to enter the vagina, whether it be with or without lust, with or without orgasm, the bathing would be obligatory on both.
4. To become clean from menstrual pause (period).
5. To become clean from blood after child birth.

Rule : If sperm was ejaculated from it's place but not due to lust, i.e. it was done by lifting a heavy load or falling from a height, then to bathe is not obligatory, however, the Wuzu is broken.

Rule : If semen dropped but was very thin and it came out whilst urinating or on it's own accord without lust then the bath does not become necessary but the Wuzu will break.

Rule : To bathe on Fridays, Eid days, on the day of Arafah (9th Zil Hajj) or when wearing the Ehraam is Sunnat.

Things that can and cannot be done when bathing is obligatory :

Rule : It is strictly forbidden to enter a mosque, to perform Tawaf (of Kaa'ba), to touch the Holy Quran, or any part of the Quran whether it is in sections or volumes [Hadiya, Alamgiri] , to pray the Quran whilst viewing it without touching it, to pray the Quran verbally, to wear or touch a ring with a word of the Quran written on it when it is obligatory for you to bathe.

Rule : If the Holy Quran is wrapped in it's cloth (Juzdaan) or has a napkin wrapped around it, then there is no problem touching it without bathing [Hadiya, Hindiya]. If a verse of the Quran is prayed but the intention was not to pray as part of the Holy Quran, then there is problem. For example, to say 'Bismilla Hirrahma Nirrahim' for auspisciousness, or to say 'Alhamdo Lillahe Rabbil Aalameen' for thankfulness or to pray when in trouble or worried 'Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Ilahi Raji'oon' or for praise the Surah Fatiha was prayed or Aayatul Qursi was prayed or another verse was prayed, however, the intention was not to pray a verse of the Quran, then there is no problem [Hindiya etc.].

Rule : To touch the Holy Quran or any verse of the Quran without ablution (but not in need to bathe) is forbidden, however to pray it verbally is no problem.

Rule : To see the Holy Quran , whether the words are seen and then prayed in the heart is allowed in any situation.

Rule : To touch the Fiqha, Hadith or Tafseer books is Makrooh. Which water is allowed to bathe or perform ablution and which is not Rainwater, sea water, ocean water, river water, stream water, canal water, well water, large pool or large lake or flowing water, snow and hailstone water is all allowed to be used to bathe or perform ablution or to clean impurities.

The rules and clarification of flowing water The clarification of flowing water is the water that flows a piece of straw, this water is clean and can clean other things. The water will not become impure if some impurity is added in it, so as long as the water's colour, smell and taste does not change. If the colour, smell or taste is changed by the impurity then the water has become impure (napak). This water will now only become clean when the impurity reaches the bottom of the waterbed and all three aspects are reverted back to it's normal situation. Otherwise, there is more water added in which would flow the impurity away and/or change the colour, smell and taste back to normal. If the clean addition has changed the colour, smell and taste then you can perform Wuzu or Ghusl (ablution or bath) until the clean addition changes to impurity. The rule and clarification of a large pool Ten arms in length and ten arms in width where water is held in known as a 'Dadarda' or large pool. It is still counted if the length is twenty arms in length and five arms in width, or it is twenty five arms in length and four arms in width, meaning it is at least twenty arms square in total. If the pool is circular then it must be approximately thirty five arms in diameter and it does not have any part of the ground above water in that diameter, this is also counted as a large pool. It will not become impure by having impurities added in, until the colour, smell or taste does not change due to the impurity.

Rule : If an impurity falls in a large pool that cannot be seen, e.g. alcohol, urine, etc. then you can perform ablution from wherever you want. If an impurity falls in that can be seen, e.g. stools, dead animal etc. then it is better to perform ablution away from where the impurity is.

Rule : Many people can perform ablution together in a large pool, even though the used water is falling back in. However, mucus, phlegm, spittle should not be added back in the water as it is against purity.

Rule of used water :

The water that has fallen from performing ablution or bath is clean but is not allowed to be used to perform ablution or bath.

Rule : If a person who has not performed ablution, dips his hand or finger or fingernail or any part of the body which is washed in ablution, whether purposely or by mistake, in a tub of water which is less then a large pool (Dadarda) then that water cannot be used to perform ablution or bath. In the same way, if a person is in need of having a bath and any part of his body touches the water purposely or by mistake, then that water cannot be used to perform a bath or ablution. If the part of the body or hand has been washed, then there is no problem. Advice on making use of the used water If a hand is put into the water or you want to use the used water then the way of re-using it again is to add fresh clean water more than the amount of water that is held in the container or to add clean water at one side so that the used water is flowed away, then you can use the new water to have a bath or perform ablution. If water is held in small pots and you are unaware of any impurities added in them, then ablution is allowed.

Rule : If an infidel informs you that this water is clean or unclean, the water will remain clean as this was it's original situation.

Rule : Ablution cannot be performed with water squeezed from a branch of a tree or fruit water, such as water from a melon or mango or sugarcane.

Rule : If a small amount of a clean item is added to water, such as a rose, jasmine, saffron, soil or sand then it is allowed to use the water to have a bath.

Rule : If such colour or saffron is added to water so much that the due to the colour the clothes would change to that colour, then it is not allowed to perform ablution or have a bath with this water.

Rule : If milk is added to water and the colour of the water changes to the colour of the milk, then it is not allowed to perform ablution or have a bath with this water.

Water of a well. (This section has been left out as it is not deemed necessary to learn this knowledge in this day and age and in these countries, such as UK America, Africa etc.)

Rules of impurity Khafifa

Whatever part of clothing impurity Khafifa gets stuck to (e.g. sleeve, collar, trouser leg etc.) or part of the body (e.g. hand, arm, leg etc.) and if it is less than a quarter of the whole item, then the Namaz will count. If it is more than a quarter than the item, then without washing it the Namaz will not count [Alamgiri etc.].

Rule : The difference of impurity Ghaliza and Khafifa is when it gets stuck on clothing or the body. However, if an impurity, whether Ghaliza or Khafifa is added to a liquid such as water, vinegar, milk etc. then even if one drop is added the whole content becomes impure, as long as it is not a Dadarda (large pool).

What items are impurity Ghaliza :

Whatever item is discharged from a person's body that would break the Wuzu or Ghusl is impurity Ghaliza. Such as faeces, urine, flowing blood, puss, mouthful vomit, blood from menstrual pause, blood from childbirth, blood discharge, sperm, semen (thin), water from a hurting eye, navel or stomach water which comes out due to pain, flowing blood from any land animal whether Haram or Halal including small reptiles blood such as lizards, fat of a dead animal, meat of a dead animal and any faeces or urine of a Haram four legged animal such as dog, cat, tiger, cheetah, vulture, fox, wolf, donkey, ass, elephant, pig and horse dung etc. Also faeces of any Halal four legged animal such as cow or buffalo dung, goat, camel, white antelope, stag, deer dung, also dung of those birds who do not fly high such as chicken, duck, whether they are large or small. Any type of alcohol or juice that would make someone lose their sense. Also faeces and urine of a snake and also meat of a wild snake and a wild frog who has flowing blood and whether they have been slaughtered and their skin whether it has been boiled. Also meat of a pig and it's bones, skin and hair whether it has been slaughtered. All of the above is impurity Ghaliza [Alamgiri etc.].

Rule : The urine of a milk drinking child male or female is impurity Ghaliza. The fact that is commonly known that the urine of a milk drinking child is clean is totally wrong [Qazi Khan, Radd-ul-Mohtar]. If a distressed lion cub vomited milk and it was a mouthful, then it is impurity Ghaliza.

Rule : The blood of a lizard or chameleon is impurity Ghaliza.

Rule : An elephant's trunks phlegm is impurity Ghaliza. The saliva of beasts such as dogs, cheetah and other four legged beasts is impurity Ghaliza [Qazi Khan].

Rule : If impurity Ghaliza mixes with impurity Khafifa, then all of it becomes Ghaliza.

Rule : If there are various drops of impurity Ghaliza on a piece of clothing and individually it does not amount to a Dirham, however, when collated together it is the same size or more than a Dirham then the rule of a Dirham applies. The same rule applies to impurity Khafifa.

What items are impurity :

Khafifa Whatever animal's meat is Halal, such as a cow, bull, buffalo, ram, goat, camel, white antelope etc. their urine and a horse's urine is impurity Khafifa. Also those bird's meat which is Haram (whether it be a bird of prey) such as crow, eagle, falcon, hawk etc. their droppings is impurity Khafifa [Hindiya etc.]. Milk of Haram animals is impurity Khafifa, however, milk of a female horse is clean but is not allowable for drinking [Bahar-e-Shariat]. The Halal birds that fly high such as, pigeon, dove, starling, water fowl, geese etc. their droppings are not impure. Rule: The droppings and urine of a bat are both clean [Radd-ul-Mohtar].

Rule : The blood of fish and animals of water and small mites and mosquitoes is clean [Hindiya etc.].

Rule : If very small droplets of urine like the size of a pinpoint get on your clothes or body, then they will remain clean [Qazi Khan].

Rule : If the clothing has them sort of small droplets and then it drops into water, the water will remain clean [Bahar-e-Shariat].

Rule : If blood comes out due to injury but stays in it's spot and does not flow, then it is clean [Bazaziya, Qazi Khan]. The blood that has remained in the meat, spleen and liver is clean and if these items are mixed in flowing blood then it is impure and will need to be washed before making it clean [Hindiya, Bazaziya etc.].

Rule : If you are praying Namaz and there is a bottle in your pocket containing urine, alcohol, blood, then the Namaz will not count [Minya etc.]. If you have an egg in your pocket whilst praying Namaz and whether the inside of the egg is turning into blood the Namaz will count [Minya etc.].

Rule : If after performing excretion or urinating you clean the parts with a handful of sand etc. and then you perspire sweat and the clothing gets wet, they will not be unclean [Bahar-e-Shariat].

Rule : If the smoke from impurities gets on your clothes, they will not become unclean [Alamgiri, Radd-ul-Mohtar etc.].

Rule : The mud in the path is clean as long as you are not aware of any impurities being in it and if Namaz is prayed with this mud on your clothes or feet, it will count, but it is better to clean it off [Bahar-e-Shariat].

Rule : If water is passing in a stream on the pathway and some of it splashes on your clothes, the clothes will not be impure, however, it is better to clean them [Bahar-e-Shariat].

FOOD LEFTOVERS AND PERSPIRATION (SWEAT):

Rule : Who's leftovers are clean ? Human's leftovers (whether they are need of bathing or a woman who is on her menstrual cycle or still bleeding after childbirth) are clean [Khaniya, Hindiya).

Rule : The leftovers of infidels is also clean, however, you should refrain from it. In the same way, mucus, phlegm, saliva are also clean but people should avoid contact with them. You should believe it belongs to a very bad infidel [Hindiya etc.].

Rule : The animals whose meat can be eaten, whether they be four legged or birds, their leftovers are clean, for example, cow, buffalo, bull, goat, pigeon, pheasant etc.

Rule : The chickens which are free range and therefore can peck impurities, their leftovers are Makrooh (disliked), and if they are caged, then their leftovers are clean.

Rule : The leftovers of a horse are clean [Hindiya etc.].

Rule : The animals whose leftovers are impure are; pig, dog, tiger, cheetah, wolf, elephant, vulture and other carnivorous animals [Hindiya, Khaniya].

Rule : Animals that live in the house such as cats, mice, snakes, lizards etc. their leftovers are Makrooh [Khaniya, Alamgiri].

Rule : Leftovers of species that live in the water are clean, whether their birth was in or out of the water. Rule: The leftovers of birds of prey such as eagle, falcon, owl etc. are Makrooh.

Rule : The leftovers of a crow are Makrooh [Bahar].

Rule : If an eagle, falcon, hawk or owl are kept as a pet and used for hunting and you are aware that there is no impurity stuck in their beak, then their leftovers are clean.

Rule : The leftovers of donkeys and ass is doubtful and therefore water cannot be used to perform Wuzu.

Rule : If leftover water is clean then you can use it to perform ablution or have a bath, however, if a person whom it is obligatory to have a bath, drinks water without first cleaning his mouth, then Wuzu is not allowed with that leftover water because the water has been infected.

Rule : Whilst there is clean water available, it is Makrooh to use Makrooh water, however, if the only water available is the Makrooh water, then there is no harm. To eat Makrooh leftovers for a rich person it is Makrooh, for a poor person who has no choice, there is no harm. Whilst there is clean water available, it is not allowed to use doubtful water, and if the only water available is the doubtful water then you should use it for ablution or bathing and also perform Tayammum. In this situation it is necessary to make the intention of water and Tayammum, as an intention for just water or just Tayammum would not be sufficient.

Rule : You should not eat doubtful food or water.

Rule : If doubtful water is mixed with clean water, and if the clean water is more in quantity then it is allowed to be used for bathing and if it is less in quantity, then it is not.

Rule : Those who's leftovers are impure, their sweat and saliva is also impure. Those who's leftovers are clean, their sweat and saliva is also clean. Those who's leftovers are Makrooh, their sweat and saliva is also Makrooh.

Rule : If the sweat of a donkey or mule gets on your clothes, they will remain clean regardless of the quantity.

ADVICE TO THE MOTHERS

1. Consider children a great bounty of Allah Ta'ala. Rejoice at their birth. Congratulate one another on their arrival. Welcome the children into this world with Du'aas of righteousness and blessings. Express your gratitude unto Allah Ta'ala for affording you the opportunity of nurturing a Muslim servant and also for allowing you to leave behind your worldly and religious successor. Make Duaa that Allah Ta'ala makes this child an addition to the Muslim Ummah as a Da'i (inviter to Islm) and a true servant of the Den.
2. If you dont have any children, make Du unto Allah Ta'ala for pious children just as Hadrat Zakariyya (alayhis salaam) made Du. He entreated Allah Ta'ala in the following words:

Rabb Hab L min Ladunka Zurriyatan-Tayyibah Innaka Samud-Du.
Trans: O My Lord! Grant me from your side pleasant children for verily You are very attentive to the prayers (of everyone). [Maryam]

3. Dont ever be disappointed on the birth of children. Due to financial restraints or health problems or due to any other reason, vigorously refrain from fretting and fuming, from regarding the child as an encumbrance or from belittling or cursing the child.
4. After the birth of the child, wash and clean him up and then call out the Azn in the right ear and Iqmah in the left ear. There is great wisdom in ensuring that the names of Allah Ta'ala and His Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) fall onto the childs ears the moment he is born. Allamah Ibnu Qayyim writes in his book Tohfatul-Wadood: The purpose of this is to ensure that words denoting the grandeur and greatness of Allah Ta'ala falls first onto the ears of the child. The Shahdah (attestation) that would Physically admit him into Islm later on, the words of the same Shahdah are being dictated to him the day he is born just as the words of the Kalimah are dictated to him when he is breathing his last. Another benefit of calling out the Azn and Iqmah is that Shaytn, who is just waiting to waylay a person and seeks to entangle a person with a snare of trials and tribulations from the moment he is born, flees the moment he hears the Azn. Before the beckoning of Shaytn, he is summoned to the call of Islm and the devotion of Allah Ta'ala.
5. If possible, after the Azn and Iqmah, get a pious man or woman to chew a piece of date or anything sweet and place it onto the palate of the child and request the pious person to make Du for the child.
6. Choose a suitable name for the child. Name the child after the prophets or the Shbah or add the word Abd to one of the names of Allah Ta'ala like Abdullh, Abdur-Rahmn etc.
7. If out of ignorance you kept an offensive or unpleasant name, change it with another appropriate name.
8. Perform Aqqah on the seventh day. Slaughter two animals for a male and one for a female issue. However, slaughtering two animals for a male child is not necessary. Even one would suffice. Thereafter shave the childs hair and give gold or silver equivalent to the weight of the hair in charity. (You may give cash as well.)
9. On the seventh day, circumcise on the male child. However, if this is not possible by the seventh day, get it done at least before he is seven years old. Khatnah (circumcision) is an Islmic characteristic.
10. When the child starts talking, teach him the words of L ilh IllAllah first.
11. Feed the child with your own milk as well. This is a right of the child over the mother. Breastfeeding is one of the favours the Holy Qurn reminds the children about thereby emphasising the importance of showing kindness to the mother. The child naturally develops more love for the mother who breastfeeds him. Such children are generally more obedient and the mothers also have fewer complains about such children. Coupled with this, it is also the mothers responsibility that with every drop of milk, she imparts the lesson of Tauhd, the love of Rasulullahullh ? , the devotion to Dn to the child and also that she endeavours to instil this love in his heart and soul. Do not lighten your burdens and relegate your responsibility onto the fathers shoulders but fulfil this pleasant religious obligation yourself and you will be blessed with spiritual tranquillity and joy. As far as possible, stay away from Tawizes (amulets etc.) for the children. Instead of utilising Tawzes for them, teach them the Du'aas for various occasions. Recite verses of the Holy Qurn and blow on them yourself. Also inculcate in them the habit of reciting the Manzil and memorising the verses contained therein.
12. Refrain from intimidating the child. The anxiety he suffers in these developing years will affect his mind and soul for the rest of his lifetime. Generally, such children are not primed to accomplish any feat of merit. Also, dont force the child to do anything when he his hungry.
13. Be particularly cautious about scolding, admonishing and rebuking the child for every trivial matter. Instead of showing disgust towards their deficiencies, with wisdom and enthusiasm, endeavour to rear them with love and affection. Nonetheless, your conduct with them should portray that you will not tolerate anything contrary to the Sharah.
14. Always treat your children with love, affection and warmth. As far as possible, attend to their needs and kindle their spirit of obedience. Avoid questioning the child about Why? When? and Who? Avoid questions like: Why did you do this? Dont you have any shame? When would you learn? I dont know what to do with you! Instead of admonishing the child in this manner, employ a positive stance. Rub your hand over his head and very affectionately explain that this is not what should be done. Etc. etc.
15. Show love and affection to the younger children. Rub your hands affectionately over their heads. Take them into your lap and love them. Your conduct with them should be one of cheerfulness and joviality. Dont act like a stern and cruel ruler with them. Conducting yourself in this stern manner will fail to encourage any loving spirit in the hearts of the children for their parents. Also, the children will fail to develop any form of self-confidence and the harsh behaviour of their parents has an adverse effect on the natural nurturing of the child.
16. Expend all your energies in providing your children with decent education and wholesome upbringing. In pursuit of this objective, dont be the least hesitant. This is your religious obligation, a great favour unto your children and a great act of goodwill unto yourself as well.
17. When the child reaches the age of seven, teach him about the performance of Salh. Instruct him to observe this act of Ibdat. Make the girls perform the Salh with you and send the boys to the Musjid with their father and develop the enthusiasm for the performance of Salh. When they turn ten and they show any shortcoming in discharging this obligation, punish them appropriately. Let your actions and statements point out to them that you would not tolerate any form of carelessness in the discharge of this duty.
18. When they turn ten, separate their beds and make each one of them sleep on separate beds.
19. Always keep the children clean and tidy. Be very particular about their hygiene, bathing and cleanliness. Ensure that their clothes are clean and Pk. However, abstain from excessive grooming and vanity. Keep the girls clothing simple as well. Dont ruin the morals of the boys by making them wear flamboyant and gaudy clothing.
20. Avoid mentioning their faults in front of others. Be very cautious about putting the child to shame. At all costs, refrain from bruising his ego. Similarly, when one of them errs, dont scold all of them. Advise the offender separately or take appropriate action against him alone.
21. In front of the children, dont reveal your despair over their failure to rectify themselves. In fact, to boost their spirits, praise them wholeheartedly even over trivial achievements. Always try to encourage them and raise their spirit of self-confidence.
22. Relate to them the stories of the Prophets (Alayhimus salaam). Explain how they invited the non-Muslims to Islm and what role their character played in attracting the infidels to Islm. Also narrate to them incidents from the lives of the Sahbah (Radhiallaahu Anhum) and other pious people. Regard such narration as crucial for their morals and for the development of their affiliation towards Dn. In spite of your thousand and one other chores, take out a bit of time for this as well. May Allah Ta'ala assist you and all the other Muslim mothers.
23. Periodically, make the children distribute alms, food etc. to the poor with their on hands. This would promote a spirit of sympathy and generosity towards the poor. Now and again, allow them to distribute food, (sweets etc.) to their other siblings as well as this would engender a sense of recognising the rights of others and create a spirit of impartiality amongst them.
24. Do not comply with the childs every whim and fancy. With tact and wisdom, try to dissuade the child from this habit. Employ a bit of harshness now and again. Dont turn them into obstinate and adamant children by showering them with misplaced love.
25. Avoid speaking in harsh tones. Avoid yelling and shrieking and advise the children to speak in a moderate and gentle tone as well. Also stress upon them to avoid shouting and yelling at one another.
26. Develop amongst them the habit of doing everything by themselves. They should avoid depending on the servants for every little thing.
27. If there is a squabble amongst children, dont side with your child unfairly. Remember, just as you cherish certain feelings in favour of your child, other parents also cherish the same feelings in favour of their children. Also, dont allow the complaints of your sister-in-laws children or the complaints of the neighbours to reach your husband.
28. Always be impartial to all your children. Be very cautious and refrain from showing favouritism at all costs. If you have a greater inclination to one of your children you are excused but as far as your conduct, behaviour and dealings are concerned, you should be impartial and fair to each one of them.
29. Always be an excellent example to your children. You are unto your children a perpetual and silent teacher who is always studied and scrutinised by the children. Even in jest, do not speak lies before your children.
30. Be cheerful on the birth of a daughter just as you are cheerful on the birth of a son. Girls or boys, both are blessings of Allah Ta'ala. Allah alone knows which is best for you; a boy or a girl. Similarly, dont express displeasure when one of your sisters-in-law gives birth to a girl child. Also dont pressure your sister-in-law or your brothers in laws to give gifts etc. on this occasion, thereby attracting their curses. Forcing others to give presents renders one guilty of accepting or partaking of Harm wealth. It appears in the Hadth that Rasulullahullh ? said: Behold! The wealth of a person is not Hall except with the happiness of the heart. [Mishkt Page 255 Hadth 8] May Allah Ta'ala protect us all from Harm gifts.
31. Bring up your daughters with heartfelt joy, devout happiness, and a sense of religious spirit. In compensation of this, cherish the hope of Jannah from Allah Ta'ala.
32. Do not regard the female child as inferior to the male and do not give him preference over her. Expose the same love for both of them and conduct yourself impartially with both of them.
33. With enthusiasm and care, ensure that you give the girls their fixed share of a deceaseds estate. Also, be specific in your will about depriving the daughters of their share of the inheritance. Make sure you study books on this subject like Tarqa-e-Wasiyyat and Ahkm-e-Mayyit.
34. The ideal mother is she who instils the honour and esteem of her husband into the hearts of her children. She explains in various ways the status he commands as a leader and chief of the household. For instance, when something crops up, she responds by saying: Well ask your father when he returns. Well do it if he agrees otherwise not because there is always good in obeying him. Allah Ta'ala is also pleased. Dad is the leader of the household. Obedience to the leader in permissible matters removes a number of calamities and this also attracts the mercy of Allah Ta'ala. Etc. etc.
35. Similarly, the ideal mother is she who refrains from arguing and quarrelling with her husband in front of her children. In spite of the most detestable behaviour of her husband, she exercises patience in front of them and submits to the husband: Yes, I was at fault, I am sorry. This wont happen in the future. Then when she is alone with him, she explains the proper situation to him and that she didnt say anything at that time because of the children. Similarly, the ideal mother is she who refrains from giving the husband and children any sad news the moment they come home. She does not pounce on them with a volley of questions nor does she criticise them on any of their shortcomings the moment they step foot into the house. Instead, she greets them with Salm, feeds them properly and then she says what has to be said.
36. The ideal mother is she who tries to maintain between two children an appropriate gap that allows the first one to complete breastfeeding and become a bit self-sufficient and also it affords the mother to overcome her weakness she suffered due to childbirth and breastfeeding. This gives her the opportunity to lighten her shoulders from the turmoil of a very young child. Now when she has no other valid Shar excuse, she prepares herself for the next child so that each one of them can be brought up correctly and each one is awarded individual attention. This gap also offers her the opportunity to offer each child her individual attention and also it also allows her to recuperate after the weakness of childbirth, breastfeeding etc. Also, this gap ensures that the milk she is presently feeding is not adversely affected by another pregnancy. Therefore, it is recommended that the couple employ temporary measures of birth control and maintain a reasonable gap between their children. In fact, in view of the health of the mother or the child or on grounds of compelling reasons, after consulting with the Mufts, she may even maintain a longer gap provided her intentions are not warped.
37. The ideal mother is she who honours her husbands as well as her own mother in a manner pleasing unto Allah Ta'ala and this in turn engenders the same graciousness, Dn spirit and honour amongst her children as well. She who happens to be a coolness unto the eyes of her mother and the husbands mother, her children will also be a coolness unto her eyes.
38. The ideal mother is she who practises upon the advices proffered in this book and endeavours to instil these attributes into her Muslim sisters as well. She also encourages her Muslim sisters to read this book and books like Tohfa-e-Khawtn, Tohfa-e-Dulhan, Fadil-e-Aaml, Fadil-e-Sadaqt. She also makes Du for the compiler of this book and the people who have assisted in its publication and also for those men and women engaged in the effort of Dn.
39. Do not keep two daughters-in-law of conflicting temperament together. Ensure that you dont get two of your sons married at the same time. If you have to do this, ensure that they stay separately. This arrangement encompasses a number of benefits and advantages to all parties concerned. For further information on this topic, read the book Tohfa-e-Dulh under the chapter advices to the parents of the groom.
40. When your daughter reaches the age of seven, bring her up in such a manner that she avoids shaking hands with men and she covers all her hair when she steps out of the home. Also, from an early age, develop the habit of making her wear long tops and (cotton) pants so that her legs remain covered at all times.
41. Together with the aforementioned strategies, make Du'aas for your children with ardent zeal and enthusiasm. Also abstain from the disobedience of Allah Ta'ala and restrain others from the same. It is hoped that Allah Ta'ala would not thrust aside the sincere Du'aas emanating from the depths of the parents hearts.

Miracle in the Quran

Word                             Meaning                   Mentioned in the Quran

Al-Dunya                          This World                             115(times)
Al-Akhira                          The Here After                           115
Al-Mala'ikah                      Angles                                        88
Al-Shayateen                    Satan                                         88
Al-Hayat                           Life                                            145
Al-Maout                          Death                                        145
Al-Rajul                            Man                                           24
Al-Mar'ha                         Women                                       24
Al-Shahr                          Month                                        12
Al-Yahom                         Day                                            365
Al-bahar                          Sea                                            32
Al-bar                              Land                                          13

If we add up the total words of both "sea" and "land" we get 45.

Now if we do a simple calculation:

32/45 X 100% = 71.11111111%

13/45 X 100% = 28.88888888%

Above is what we know today, the percentages of Water (Sea) and Land in the world. Yet another miracle in the Quran.

The Miracles of the Quran will never end. There will never be a  time where mankind can fully take in the knowledge that is in this Holy book. It is a miracle to all mankind, the word of God. There is no value that one can set to the words of the Creator. It is a
treasure of which guides those that want to succeed in this life and the hereafter.

See, if we see in detail, than we should have a large number of Miracle narrated in Quran. Quran is the only source whcih will Update peoples every time till Roz-e-Hashur.

Issue: 500 Discretion, Time, Intention
Date: October 24, 2008 - Shawwal 24, 1429

Living The Quran

Al-Baqarah (The Cow)
Chapter 2: Verse 264 (partial)

Learning Discretion
"O you who have attained to faith! Do not deprive your charitable deeds of all worth by stressing your own benevolence and hurting [the feeling of the needy], as does he who spends his wealth only to be seen and praised by men, and believes not in God and the Last Day."
Throughout the Quran humankind is asked to find the measure in which it will give and to remain discreet and respectful of others. Indeed, one's way of giving is in itself a testimony of faith: if you have no need to be seen by others, it is a sign that you know God is always with you. Discretion also safeguards the dignity of those you help.
This duty to be discreet is more important than it may appear: it bears the mark of respect for people's dignity in all circumstances, even the most intimate. The aim is to prevent evil, to give before the poor need to beg, and to try to avoid being seen by anyone so that no one has to be embarrassed or look the other way for no reason. When society does not give what its members are entitled to have, the more affluent among them must express the greatness of this principle of dignified generosity. The Quran constantly paints this landscape, which must not be forgotten in our personal economic management.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

The Value of Time

Al-Bukhari, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah narrated, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "There are two blessings which many people lose: Health and free time for doing good."

Time is a precious blessing and a great gift, the value of which is only realised and benefitted from by the successful guided ones, as indicated by the noble hadith, "which many people lose," implying that only a minority benefit from it, while the majority are wasters and losers.

BlindSpot!

Intention and Intention
Any deed performed with the sole intention of pleasing Allah which is also consistent with His shariah is an act of worship or ibadah. At the same time, though, there are some deeds that must be accompanied with an intention for them to be accepted by Allah. These deeds include, according to the majority opinion, ablution, ghusl, tayammum, prayers, zakat, fasts, pilgrimage, itikaf and other acts of worship.
For example, someone could go the entire day without eating due to lack of food or for health reasons but this would not be the same thing as fasting as an act of worship. Whenever anyone wishes to fast as an act of worship, one must first make the intention to perform that act of worship. Therefore, in order to distinguish the act of worship from any other customary act, the intention must be present in the heart of the person.

Date: October 17, 2008 - Shawwal 17, 1429

Living The Quran

Al-Imran (The House of Imran)
Chapter 3: Verse 54

The Best Plotter
"They plotted, God also plotted. God is the best of plotters."
This verse is referring to the efforts of the Jews contemporary to Isa (Jesus), may Allah be pleased with him, who hatched a plan against him to have him executed.
Makr: The expression used for the unbelievers as well for Allah is the same but the meanings are different. Makr on the part of man is secretive plotting or scheming with mischievous intentions. Allah also plots to frustrate the plotting of His subjects. But His slaves remain completely in dark about what He plans and how He intends to accomplish it.
However, Allah's plotting and scheming is entirely within the norms of justice. His plotting is based on wisdom and hence entirely beneficial to man as well as to an unknown number of His creations. Therefore, He is the best of plotters.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

Realistic Method

The Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, does not regard people as if they were winged angels, but as human beings who eat food and live in the markets, who have their dispositions and passions, their necessities and their needs - just as they also have elevated spiritual aspirations and are elevated by them to the host of heaven. They were created from clay and moulded mud, but also there is in them a breath from the spirit of God. Little wonder then that a human being ascends and descends, that he makes progress and he stumbles, that he is guided and goes astray, that he stands firm and he deviates, that he disobeys God and he repents.

The Sunnah makes allowance for the reality of the human being and it relents from him when he lapses into disobedience. It does not close the door in the face of repentance. Rather, it opens it wide before him so that he can knock on that door, repentant and remorseful before his Lord. As in the hadith: "God spreads out His hands through the night so that He may accept repentance for the offences of the day; and He spreads out His hands through the day so that He may accept repentance for the offences of the night - until the sun rises in the west." [Muslim]

The Sunnah makes allowance for the different conditions of human beings, and the differences between them, whether innate or acquired. In consideration of such differences the Messenger would answer a single question from a number of persons with multiple answers - so he did not apply to an old man a ruling on the matter appropriate to a youth; or to someone in conditions of necessity a ruling appropriate to one in abundance and enjoying freedom of action. Similarly, he considered the customs of peoples and their diversity: so he let the Abyssinians play with their spears in his mosque on the day of Eid; and he let Aishah watch them from behind his shoulder. In the same way he urged the girls to come and play with her, as a concession to her being young. So too he made lawful entertainments at weddings, and at celebrations for the return of someone long absent, and other such occasions, as a concession to the need of human beings for amusement and recreations.

Many examples of the Sunnah inform us of the realism of this divine Prophetic pattern.

Kindness to Animals
Kind treatment and tender-heartedness was meted out to animals by the Islamic State and other welfare institutions of Islamic Civilization. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz issued instructions to the common people not to cause animals hardship nor trouble them, but to treat them kindly. The law in this regard was as follows: "People should not be allowed to load their animals with loads heavier than their capacity, nor can they be permitted to goad them to great speed when they are carrying heavy loads. They should be made to desist from beating them. All these practices are against the Islamic Shariah. It is the duty of the owners of the animals to be God-fearing in the matter of their feed. The fodder should be enough to fully satisfy the animal's hunger. It should be neither of a poor quality nor meagre in quantity."
A very charming example of such kind treatment of animals is that presented by a high-ranking Companion - Abu al-Darda. At the time of his death he said to his camel, "O my camel! Do not quarrel with me before our Lord and Cherisher, for I never made you work beyond your capacity." There was another companion by the name Adi ibn Hatim who crushed the bread into fine powder for the ants and said, "These are our neighbours, therefore they have a right over us." The great Imam Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi was one day going along with his friends when a dog confronted him. Its master tried to drive it away from his path, but the Imam prevented him from doing so, saying, "Do you not know that the roads are common between us humans and dogs."

Issue: 496 Seeking Power, Bad Habits, Weeping
Date: September 26, 2008 - Ramadan 26, 1429

Living The Quran

Al-Qadr (The Power)
Chapter 97: Verse 3

Seeking the night of power
"The Night of Power is better than a thousand months."
Laylat ul-Qadr is the most blessed night. A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good. If a believing person is zealous to obey his Lord and increase the good deeds in his record, he should strive to encounter this night and to pass it in worship and obedience. If this is facilitated for him, all of his previous sins will be forgiven.
There is no consensus of the Ummah over when the night of Qadr occurs. Imam Razi has a few novel points to offer on why that is the case:
Allah concealed its knowledge from His slaves since His rida (approval and pleasure) is concealed in devotions to Him, and in concealment of the night is the cause of increase in devotions. This is following His general method: He concealed His friend (waliyy) among the people in order that all people might be respected; He concealed His response to supplications in order that they might resort to it oftener; He concealed His Great Name (Al-Ism al-A'zam [some scholars believe that Allah is the Ism al-A'zam. YMFN ED]) in order that all of His Names might be revered; He concealed the accepted prayer in order the people pay special attention to every Prayer; He concealed the time of death in order that the people never be oblivious of it.
Again if the night of Qadr been known, the sins of the sinners in that night would have weighed heavily upon them, since, to commit sins on a known blessed occasion is greater in enormity than when committed on the same blessed occasion but without the sinner knowing that it is a blessed occasion.
Three Ways to Seek Laylat ul-Qadr
1. Performing Night Prayer (Qiyam)
It is recommended to make a long night prayer during the nights on which Laylat ul-Qadr could fall. This is indicated in many hadiths, such as the following:
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever stands (in qiyam) in Laylat ul-Qadr [and it is facilitated for him] out of faith and expectation (of Allah's reward), will have all of his previous sins forgiven." [Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad]
2. Making Supplications
It is also recommended to make extensive supplication on this night. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that she asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! If I knew which night is Laylat ul-Qadr, what should I say during it?" And he instructed her to say: 'Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fafu annee - O Allah! You are forgiving, and you love to forgive. So forgive me.'" [Recorded by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmithi. Verified to be authentic by Al-Albani]
3. Abandoning Worldly Pleasures for the Sake of Worship
It is further recommended to spend more time in worship during the nights on which Laylat ul-Qadr is likely to be. This calls for abandoning many worldly pleasures in order to secure the time and thoughts solely for worshipping Allah. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: "When the (last) ten started, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would tighten his izaar (i.e. he stayed away from his wives in order to have more time for worship), spend the whole night awake (in prayer), and wake up his family." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Understanding The Prophet's Life

Replacing Bad Habits

Completely eliminating a habit is more challenging than replacing it with a more productive habit. Moreover, its crucial to replace the lost natural needs, such as the need to socialize and to be entertained with something healthy.
For instance, its easier to replace or balance your addiction to TV with a physical workout or reading, than to suddenly remove the TV from your life. Interestingly, Prophet Muhammad, the greatest psychologist of humanity, illustrated this principle in these words:
Fear Allah wherever you may be; follow up an evil deed with a good one which will wipe (the former) out, and behave good-naturedly towards people. [At-Tirmidhi]

Weeping During Recitation
It is an attribute of those with profound knowledge of God, and a distinguishing feature of God's righteous devotees. God Most High said, They fall down upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility (Quran 17: 109).
Many hadiths and accounts from the Righteous Forebears have been related concerning this. Among them is from the Prophet, peace be upon him, himself: "Read the Quran and weep. If you do not weep, cause yourself to weep." [Ibn Majah]
Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, prayed the Morning Prayer in congregation and read Surat Yusuf. He wept until his tears flowed over his collarbone.
Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali said, "Weeping is recommended while reciting [the Quran] or witnessing [its recitation]." He said, "The way to achieve this is by bringing sadness to mind by pondering the threats and warnings, the covenants and agreements that it contains, and then contemplating one's shortcomings with their regard. If this does not bring to mind sadness and weeping, as it does with elite worshippers, then one should weep from the lack of it, since it is among the greatest of calamities." [Ihy Ulum al-Din]

Issue: 498 Unusual Witnesses, The Vision, Worst Fitnah
Date: October 10, 2008 - Shawwal 10, 1429

Living The Quran

Fussilat (Clearly Expounded)
Chapter 41: Verses 19-20

Unusual Witnesses
"On the day when God's enemies will be gathered together before the fire, they will be driven onwards until, when they reach it, their ears, their eyes and their very skins will bear witness against them, speaking of what they used to do [on earth]."
These verses tell the unbelievers of God's power over their own selves. They have no authority over themselves, and no part of them is beyond the reach of His power. Even their ears, eyes and skins obey God. They too disobey them so as to be witnesses against them on the Day of Judgement.
There is a great surprise in this very difficult situation in which the unbelievers see their own senses and faculties obeying God and doing as they are bid. In this situation they are branded as 'enemies of God'! They are herded together, from all generations, like a flock of sheep, and driven to the fire. When they stand close to it and the reckoning begins, they find themselves facing witnesses whom they did not reckon with. Their tongues, long used to lie, fabricate falsehood and engage in ridicule are now tied, while their ears, eyes and skins rebel against them obeying their Lord. They report on what they used to consider secret. They used to hide themselves, thinking that God would not see them conceal their intentions and crimes. But they did not try to hide themselves from their own ears, eyes or skins. How could they, when these faculties are part of them? Now, these publicize what the unbelievers thought to be concealed from all creatures and from God Almighty as well.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

Re-kindling The Vision

The starting point for inspiring and reviving a people is to cultivate in them a clear vision of Islam; a vision of what is required to be accomplished. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, frequently made attempts to keep his Companions' minds focused on the vision of Islam. He took every opportunity to remind them of their purpose and objective. As an example, he advised one of his Companions, Khabbab Ibn al-Arat, when he complained about the persecutions the Muslims faced in Makka, during the early years of their mission, with the following words:

"By Allah, He will complete this mission until a rider will travel from Sana to Hadramawt (both are places in Yemen) and will have no fear but of Allah, and no worry but about a wolf that might harm his cattle - but you make haste." [Bukhari]

This saying presents the vision of Islam for society and reminds Muslims that they must keep on working, irrespective of the adversities, for a better society that ensures peace and justice for all people.

The Worst Fitnah
Ibn Abd al-Barr reported that Hudhayfah was asked: "What is the worst fitnah?" So, he replied: "That you are presented with the good and the bad, and you are confused as to which path to take."
Ibn Abi Shaybah in his 'Musannaf' reported that Khalid bin al-Walid said: "Fitnah is that you are in a land in which sins are rampant, and when you seek to leave it for a land in which sins are not rampant, you are unable to find such a place."
Ibn Abi Shaybah also reported that Abu Hurayrah said: "There will be a fitnah such that nothing can rescue you from it except to supplicate as if you are drowning."

Living The Quran

Al-Rum (The Romans)
Chapter 30: Verse 30 (Partial)

True Nature
"adhere to the true nature on which Allah has created human beings."
All human beings have been created with that true innate nature which prompts them to believe that the One True God alone is the Creator, the Lord and the only object of worship and obedience, requiring them to adhere to that attitude. Should they decide to consider themselves invested with sovereign authority, they would be deviating from their true nature. Likewise, should they decide to submit to the authority of any other than the One True God, they would again be deviating from the true nature with which they were born.
This truth has been elucidated in several traditions narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him). According to a tradition, narrated by Ahmed ibn Hanbal and Nasai, the Muslims killed a large number of their enemies in a battle, including children. On learning this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was infuriated and said: "What happened to the people today that they exceeded all limits in killing so much that they even killed children?" Thereupon someone pointed out that those killed were, after all, the children of polytheists. The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "The best among you are the children of polytheists. Every living being is born with a true nature until he starts speaking and then his parents turn him into a Jew or a Christian."

[Reported by Muslim, at-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ahmad, Ibn Majah]

"The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to fast Mondays and Thursdays".
[an-Nasai, Sahih]

"Whoever fasts three days each month, it is like fasting all the time."
[at-Tirmidhi]

The drug of the 21st century
The pornography industry is a mega-billion-dollar industry and growing. The people who run it don't care about you. They just want your money. They know it's addictive and have found ways to entice and trap you.
Have you ever watched one of those nature films where a crocodile is hiding in a pond? The thirsty gazelle trots around the pond, afraid to get too close, while the vicious, one-ton croc waits silently below the surface. Eventually, the gazelle overcomes its fear, meanders to the pond, and begins drinking. Suddenly, the gaping jaws of the crocodile reach up and grab its prey, pulling it beneath t he surface and eating it alive.
So it is with porn. If you get too close it will reach up, sink its teeth into you, and pull you down beneath its murky waters so fast you won't even know what happened. It's especially tempting for guys, even though girls are getting into it more and more.
Pornography is a behavioural addiction as strong as cocaine. Avoid it. Be smart and self-aware. Throw it away or turn it off. Put your computer in the family room where everyone can see it, not in your bedroom. If you are hooked, get help, just as you would with a drug addiction. Studies show that it is difficult to overcome on your own. Don't let anyone tell you it's normal or harmless or that boys will be boys. We all know better.
Pornography is usually viewed in secret. But that which is done in the dark will eventually be brought to light in the form of broken relationships, low self-esteem, and unfulfilled dreams.

Chapter 42: Verse 36

Everlasting Success
"What you are given (here) is a provision for the life of this world and what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe, and who put their trust in their Lord."
Opportunities are numerous and varied, but our course in life will depend on how we utilize such opportunities. The attractions of life are numerous and they come in many forms and varieties. They are made available by Allah to see how well we choose and manage our affairs in His cause, and how we apply His guidance.
Man is full of ambitions, desires, needs, and demands. A person may go after social enhancement, power, money, fame or self-service and attain well. But whatever the outcome of his toil, man's success has no permanent value except for what is done for the cause of Allah.
Allah provided numerous attractions for all of us, to be utilized and enjoyed. But this is truly a small measure if we are to compare it to what lies ahead in the heavenly bliss of paradise.
Since our life is limited, what we utilize and enjoy is for a limited time. And if all that we see on earth is only a small measure compared to what is in Paradise, try to imagine how enormous the available attractions are in Heaven!
But the marvellous Paradise is for those who qualify. It is for those who earn it. They are the believers, since through the belief in Allah they will be on the right path. It is a faith directed to noble goal - Allah, and Allah's service, with no strings attached. Such a believer puts his trust in Allah and totally relies upon Him. Such a staunch believer deserves the bounty in Paradise.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

Affairs of Worldly Life

The best understanding of the Prophet's Sunnah comes by investigation of the particular causes on which hadiths are based, or the specific occasion to which they are attached, specified in the hadith text or discoverable from the hadith, or understood from the actual circumstance to which the hadith is addressed.
An example of that is the hadith: "You know better the affairs of your worldly life." [Muslim] It is one on which some people base their evasion of the Legal injunctions in the spheres of economics, civic and political duties, and the like, because these matters - so they claim - are among worldly concerns, and we know them better, and the Messenger, entrusted them to us! But is this really what the noble hadith intends?
By no means. Among the purposes with which God sent His messengers is that they should stipulate for the people the principles of justice, the balanced norms of equity, and the regulations of the rights and duties in their worldly life, so that their standards should not clash, nor their ways differ. So texts of the Book and Sunnah have come which order and regulate everyday concerns - selling and buying, partnership and mortgaging, leasing and lending, and other matters - to the extent that the longest verse in the Book of God was sent down on the arrangement of a matter that is slight among the worldly matters, namely the writing down of debts.
The hadith is interpreted by the occasion that prompted it, namely the incident of the pollination of date-palms. The Prophet's indication to the people about this was his conjecture, for he was not an agriculturist, he had grown up in a valley not endowed with crops. But the Ansar supposed his opinion to be the way of a revealed or religious command, and so they abandoned the pollination. Its effect was bad for the yield. Then he said: "I was only conjecturing a conjecture, so do not take [from] me [what is] by way of conjecture..." to [where] he said "... You know better your own worldly affairs." And this is the story behind the hadith.
This requires profound understanding and subtle perception, as well as comprehensive, integrated study of the texts and mature insight into the goals of the Law and the reality of the religion. It also requires moral courage and inner strength to come out with the truth even if it opposes what the people are used to and what they have inherited. It is not an easy thing. This is the cost exacted from Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah by the enmity of the scholars of his time. They conspired against him until he was put in prison many times, and he died therein, may God be pleased with him.

The wide jurisdiction of worship, its incorporation into all acts which are performed with the intention of complying with the will of God, is sometimes used as a pretext to support the erroneous view that the formal rituals of worship such as prayers, fasting, zakah and pilgrimage can be dispensed with; or that they are not very important. The truth, however, is quite contrary to this. In Islam, they are the chief means for strengthening one's attachment with God. Thus the view of those who are given to laxity in religious matters with regard to obligatory acts of worship, and who imagine that the true faith does not consist of salah and sawm, and who believe that the basis of true faith is merely purity of heart, goodness of intention and soundness of conduct is absolutely misconceived. This constitutes a fundamental misrepresentation of the Islamic teachings.
So far as the intention to live a life of righteousness is concerned, some take the view that this does not lend itself to external observation. But such intention to do good alone does not mark off true people of faith from the rest. Religion, after all, has an external aspect in the same way as it has an intearnal one.
This attitude of deliberate disregard for obligations is destructive of the very foundations of religion. For, were this viewpoint to be adopted, everyone, even those who are opposed to religion, could claim to be the most devout of all worshippers! Prayers, and all other prescribed forms of worship for that matter, serve to distinguish the ones who do really have faith and who wish sincerely to serve God from those who are content with lip service. So important is Prayer that the Prophet has said: 'salah is the pillar of the Islamic religion and whosoever abandons it, demolishes the very pillar of religion.'

Living The Quran

Al-Rum (The Romans)
Chapter 30: Verse 8 (Partial)

Proofs Within
"Do they not reflect on themselves?"
Man's own being and the position he enjoys has been presented as a proof of the imminence of the Hereafter. Man is, after all, distinguished from all other creatures by the following three features:
i. Innumerable objects on earth and its environs have been yoked to man's service and man has been vested with a wide range of abilities so that he can make use of these.
ii. Man has been granted freedom to choose his course in life. But once he makes the choice, he is enabled, by the nature of things, to pursue his choice and, in so doing, can use the resources which God has created.
iii. Man has been inherently endowed with moral consciousness. Thanks to this, he can instinctively differentiate between good acts and evil acts.
These innate traits indicate that at some point in time man should be called to account; that he should be asked how he used the abilities, power and authority that were granted to him in the world and how he exercised his free-will to choose between good and evil. It is also evident that the appraisal of man's performance is possible only after the term granted to him to act comes to an end. Furthermore, this can only happen when the actions of not just one individual or nation, but of all human beings, come to a final end. This, because an individual's death or even the disappearance of a whole nation does not bring about an end to the total effects of a person's actions.
Thus, there will be an Afterlife in which everyone will be judged in the light of his life's record and be recompensed in accordance with his performance.

Voluntary Prayers

"Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs of prayer voluntarily in a day and night, Allah will build him a house in Paradise."

[Sahih Muslim 1/503]

"The first thing which the people will be called to account for of their actions on the Day of Judgment is their prayer. If it is in a good state, he is successful and has passed. If it is in a bad state, he has failed and has lost. Allah will then Say: 'See if there are some optional prayers that can compensate for the deficiency in his obligatory prayer!' Then, all the actions will be dealt with similarly."

[Sahih at-Tirmidhi 1/130]

"Allah Says: "My servant approaches Me with nothing more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him, and My servant keeps drawing nearer to Me with voluntary deeds until I Love him. And when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he seizes, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks Me, I will surely give to him, and if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely protect him.""

Keeping Commitment
Keeping commitments is the 'Big Kahuna' of all behaviours. It's the quickest way to build trust in any relationship - be it with an employee, a boss, a team member, a customer, a supplier, a spouse, a child, or the public in general. Its opposite - to break commitments or violate promises - is, without question, the quickest way to destroy trust.
Obviously this behaviour involves making commitments as well as keeping them. To paraphrase my friend Roger Merill, when you make a commitment, you build hope; when you keep it, you build trust. Given the impact of violating commitments, it's vital to be careful with the commitments you make.
However, the counterfeit of this behaviour is to make commitments that are so vague or elusive that nobody can pin you down, or, even worse, to be so afraid of breaking commitments that you don't even make any the first place.
Keeping commitments is based on the principles of integrity, performance, courage, and humility. It's the perfect balance of character and competence. Particularly, it involves integrity (character) and your ability to do what you say you're going to do (competence).
When it comes to dealing with a commitment to a client, people tend to be more rigid. But when it comes to a family commitment, they tend to be more flexible - sometimes simply because they're trying to provide for their families and they tend to justify breaking those commitments more easily. Because keeping commitments has such an impact on trust - and because trust is so vital to a thriving family culture - it's wise to keep in mind that commitments to family members are often the most important commitments of all.
Also, making and keeping commitments to yourself is the key to success in making and keeping commitments to others. That's where it all starts, and that's what gives you the power and confidence - the Self Trust - that enables you to build trust with others.

Issue: 493 Empowering, Proper Planning, Deen of Practice
Date: September 5, 2008 - Ramadan 5, 1429

Living The Quran

Al-Ankabut (The Spider)
Chapter 29: Verse 45

Empowering
"Surely, Salah prevents indecency and evil."
If we look deep into our daily lives and diagnose the causes of our spiritual, social and psychological illnesses, we will realize that probably something as uplifting, revolutionary, and empowering as Salah is missing.
If we realize the potential role of Prayer in changing our lives and as a constant source of hope, we would regret missing even a single Salah.
Today we have indeed come to treat the Prayer (Salah) as something insignificant in our lives. Very often we hear our elders say, "I will start praying when the time comes." Others, specially the younger Muslims, do not find much comfort, and joy in their Prayers. Due to our treatment of Prayer as a burden, our love and passion for the Prayer has vanished. Our hearts have become hardened, and we have become a depressed and defeated people. As a result, many are searching for 'cures and remedies' to the distress in our lives, through any means available, but are unable to find any because they have ignored the greatest medicine - Salah!
Remember, Salah is an obligation. Whether your heart is attentive or not, it must be performed. You cannot give up Prayer because to you it appears useless. There is punishment for a Prayer not performed. It will be a witness against you rather than a witness for you on the Day of Judgment. Don't give up the obligation but try to infuse it with the purpose it seeks to serve - remembrance of Allah.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

Proper Planning

The Prophet (peace be upon him) showed us the importance of planning. He was meticulous in his planning, and in that way, he taught those around him how important it is to plan one's course of action.
One good example of this was how he planned his emigration from Mecca to Madinah. He decided on the route he was going to take, set a date for his departure, and he made sure to have a reliable guide and sufficient provisions. He arranged the matter with Abu Bakr, and made sure that they could leave from Mecca undetected.
All of this planning, and all of the precautions that the Prophet (peace be upon him) took, did not contradict with his utmost reliance upon Allah in any way. This is because a Muslim is supposed to take all the lawful and practical steps available and then place all of his or her trust in Allah to bring about the desired results. That is the true meaning of relying on Allah.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked whether it is better to tie up one's camel or trust in Allah to keep it from running off, the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "Tie up the camel and trust in Allah." [Sunan al-Tirmidh (2517)]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) had the utmost faith in Allah, but this never prevented him from planning sensibly for what he wanted to achieve. This is a lesson for those who wish to disseminate the message of Islam to others. It is vital to have a well-thought-out program before embarking upon this noble work. In doing so, we are following our Prophet's example.

Deen of Practice
Islam is a Deen of practice and Muslims, being obedient slaves of Allah, must be practical people. Their focus must be on practising Islamic teaching rather than on theorizing or on amassing knowledge. This does not mean that a Muslim should be ignorant; far from it. Muslims are obliged to learn, and they will be held accountable for this obligation. But the learning must be for practising, not to gain knowledge for its own sake. As soon as they learn, whatever they learn, they must immediately put it into practice. If this means changing their lifestyle, they must make those changes immediately instead of waiting until they have acquired all knowledge. By the same token, the knowledge they acquire must be relevant to their current circumstances and their current responsibilities so that whatever is learned can be immediately put into action. That is why the companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to learn a few points, put them into practice, then learn more and put them into practice and continue that way all their life.
Learning and practicing are parallel processes that continue throughout life. In fact, there is no concept of knowledge without corresponding practice in Islam. Religious knowledge that is not put into practice right away is considered loss of knowledge.

Issue: 492 Impartiality of Truth, Social Relations, Determination
Date: August 29, 2008 - Shaban 27, 1429

Living The Quran

Al-Muminun (The Believers)
Chapter 23: Verse 71

Impartiality of Truth
"If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition."
Islamic thought, with its approaches and concepts springing from belief in Allah and His oneness, includes a very basic assumption in the way it looks into any field of knowledge. This general and basic assumption is that truth and reality, right and wrong, and good and evil are in fact neutral realities which must be understood in the light of both the nature which Allah has created in humankind and the revelations which He has sent to guide them. From this standpoint, the Muslim mind is a scientific one which seeks knowledge on its own terms and according to its own objective rules, rather than on the basis of whim or presupposed notions. For this reason the efforts of the Muslim mind will not be wasted and will not go astray.
The objectivity of truth and reality is a living and dynamic concept in which relations are regulated by the fitrah, the natural laws of the universe, and values that distinguish between right and wrong. This concept is one that ignores the sophistry of diseased minds that cry out in the name of knowledge and free inquiry, and then attempt to belittle society's most basic standards of decency. Such minds do not balk at defending even the most disgusting perversions, and presenting them in such a way that they appear to be the rule rather than the exception. Such thought and blind methodology will never result in anything other than perversion, corruption, and deviation that further tear the fabric of society and destroy its family structure.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

Social Relations

Islam gives great importance on social relations. The peace and stability of society depends on good social relations amongst the members of society. As such Islam has laid down detail instructions so that, social relations are properly maintained and not disrupted by wrong practices. The importance of social relations will be clear from the following saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
"Do not be envious of each other, nor backbite nor hate one another, but become brothers in the service of Allah." (reported in Bukhari, the book of tradition of the Prophet)
Islam has, therefore, made it unlawful for a Muslim to cut relations with fellow Muslims. The Prophet of Islam has said, "One who cuts relations will not enter paradise." (reported by Bukhari)
The Prophet of Islam has also said,
"It is not permissible for a Muslim to keep apart from his brother for more than three days. If three days pass, he should meet him and greet him, and if he replies to it, they will both have shared in the reward, while if he does not reply, he will bear his sin while the Muslim (who offered him the greeting) will have been freed from the sin of keeping apart." (reported by Abu Daud, a book of tradition of the Prophet)
Islam has also emphasised the need for immediate settlement of social disputes so that, peace in general prevails in the society.
The Prophet of Islam has said, "Shall I not inform you of something more excellent in degree than fasting, charity and prayer?" On receiving the reply, 'Certainly', he said, "It is putting things right between people." (reported by Al-Tirmidhi and others)

BlindSpot!

Determination
Islam has declared achievement of strength and power essential. Its one characteristic and manifestation is that you make a firm determination and a strong resolve to achieve, with the help of your nearest available means and resources, your objective. Try your utmost in achieving your goal. You should leave no stone unturned and no room for chance, and thereafter leave the outcome in the hands of destiny. There are many individuals who take Allah's shelter in order to cover their objectionable defects reprehensible negligence, inability and laziness, and grumble against luck. Islam has disapproved of this tendency.
It is the duty of everybody that he should make full efforts and try to the best of his ability to overcome his difficulty, till the time he achieves his objective. If he overcomes his difficulties then he has fulfilled his responsibility.
However, if after making all the efforts he fails, then at such a time the support of Allah is the best shelter for him, which would help him to overcome the sense of defeatism and frustration. In both the states he is strong and powerful. First by making efforts and working and in the second case by relying on God he receives strength.
Islam does not like that in your affairs you should be a prey to vagueness and hesitation. You should not be undecided in the matter of selecting the advantageous alternative. Your head should not be filled up with doubts and misgivings, resulting in an atmosphere of uncertainty and indecision, making it difficult for you to come to a decision. It does not like that due to your weakness you may not be able to strongly hold the advantageous things in your firm grip, and they should slip through your fingers and may be wasted. This restlessness and indecision does not become a Muslim.

Issue: 491 Religious Discussion, Most Virtuous Deed, Rebellion
Date: August 22, 2008 - Shaban 20, 1429

Living The Quran

Al-Ankabut (The Spider)
Chapter 29: Verse 46 (Partial)

Religious Discussion
"Say to them: "We believe in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to you. One is our God and your God; and we are those who submit ourselves to Him."
In this verse God indicates to the expounders of Truth how they can engage in refined religious discussion with others by offering an example. They are told not to make the erroneous position of the other party the starting point of such a discussion. Rather, the discussion should commence with identifying and highlighting the elements of truth that are common to both parties. In other words, commonalities rather than differences should be taken up first.
It is also pertinent to remember that the People of the Book, unlike the Arabian polytheists, did not deny revelation, messengership and the Hereafter. Rather, they affirmed these truths as did the Muslims. The Muslims were, therefore, directed that if they encountered the People of the Book they should expound their standpoint: that they believed in the same God in Whom they believed, and that they too were committed to obeying Him. They were also to make it clear that they were bound to follow all the directives and commands that came from God, be they those that came to the People of the Book or to the Muslims. They were also required to clarify that they were devout servants of God rather than worshippers of any particular country, nation or race.

Understanding The Prophet's Life

The Most Virtuous Deed

The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned after mentioning the testimony of faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory upon all the Prophets and for all peoples. Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during his ascension to heaven. Furthermore, when Allah praises the believers, such as in the beginning of surah al-Muminoon, one of the first descriptions He states is their adherence to the prayers.
Once a man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again. The first three times, the Prophet (peace be upon him) again answered, "The prayer," then on the fourth occasion he stated, "Jihad in the way of Allah." [This is from a hadith recorded by Ahmad and ibn Hibban.]
The importance of prayer is demonstrated in many of the Prophets statement. For example, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
"The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad." [Recorded by al-Tabarani]
The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs in his life, the most important aspect is ones relationship to Allah, that is, ones faith (imaan), God-consciousness (taqwa), sincerity (ikhlas) and worship of Allah (`ibaadah). This relationship with Allah is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the prayer. Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound and proper, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself stated.

Rebellion
Rebellion is complex. It lives in reaction to the world. On the surface, rebellion claims to be against monarchy, dominion, or oppression. Too often it turns out to be a vote for monarchy, dominion, or patriarchy. Rebellion is most often not a call for transformation or a new context, but simply a complaint that others control the monarchy and not us. This is why most revolutions fail - because nothing changes, only the name of the monarch.
The community form of rebellion is protest. It is noble in tradition but still often keeps us in perpetual reaction to the stances of others. There is safety in building an identity on what we do not want. The extremists on both sides of any issue are more wedded to their positions than to creating a new possibility. That is why they make unfulfillable demands. The AM radio band is populated with this non-conversation. Any time we act in reaction, even to evil, we are giving power to what we are in reaction to.
I have heard John McKnight say that advisory groups speak quietly to power, protestors scream at power, and neither chooses to reclaim or produce power. The real problem with rebellion is that it is such fun. It avoids taking responsibility, operates on the high ground, is fuelled by righteousness, gives legitimacy to blame, and is a delightful escape from the unbearable burden of being accountable.

They May Ramadan

It's the time of year to take spiritual stock
Of the things we are doing and the things we are not

It's a blessed month and our chance to be
Cleansed of our sins if we fast sincerely

Its not just about taking no food and drink
Every part of our body should refrain from sin

Guarding eyes, ears, tongue, our body as a whole
With the conscious intent of purifying the soul.

This will soften our hearts, we will feel the pain
Of those that have little of our worldly gains

The reward of good deeds is many times multiplied
So give money, food, help, whatever you like

Make the mind and body prostrate to the Lord
Let the Quran's message become food for your thoughts

Don't miss the Taraweeh, such blessings it holds
It's a great opportunity to add to the score

Remember, this is the month that generates Taqwa
Doing all those things that bring us close to Allah

Restraining ourselves from the deeds He dislikes
Having love, fear, respect, all these feelings inside

This month brings with it glad tidings, good cheer
It's the best kind of training for the rest of the year.

Al-Ahqaf (Sand Dunes)
Chapter 46: Verse 9

A Plain Warner
"Say: I am not the first of God's messengers. I do not know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow what is being revealed to me. I am only a plain warner."

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was not a totally new phenomenon: he was one in a line of God's messengers. His situation was the same as all messengers who preceded him. He was an ordinary human being whom God knew to be suited to deliver His message. Therefore, he gave him His revelations and the Prophet carried out God's orders. This is what a Divine message is like. When a messenger of God feels this bond, he does not ask God for proof, nor does he request anything special for himself: he simply moves on to deliver God's message as it is revealed to him. He gets on with the task of delivering his message, not because of any knowledge he has of the realm that lies beyond human perception, nor because of any information given to him about what will happen to him, his people or his message. He simply follows instructions, trusting his Lord, submitting himself to Him. The future is unknown to him; its secrets are with his Lord and he does not seek to know them. He has all the reassurance he needs, and he realizes that the proper attitude for him is not to look beyond the limits of the mission he has been assigned.
Those advocates of Islam endowed with profound insight into its message follow in the footsteps of the Prophet and find the same reassurance. They carry on with their advocacy of the Divine message seeking neither personal gain nor self interest. They do not know what the future holds for it or for them. They do not ask their Lord for evidence; they have all the evidence they need in their hearts. Nor do they pray for any special favour; it is sufficient favour for them that they follow this line. They discharge their duty, and this is enough for them. They do not overstep the fine line God has demarcated for them.

Understanding the Prophet's Life

Prayer of a Tree

Narrated by Ibn Abbas: "A Man went to the Prophet, upon him be the peace and blessings of Allah, and said, 'Last night, in a dream, I saw myself praying beneath a tree. When I prostrated myself, the tree prostrated too, and I hear it say: "O Lord! Write for me the recompense (of the prayer), delete because of it a sin, make of it a treasure for me, and accept it of me as You accepted it of the Prophet Dawud, upon him be peace".' I later witnessed the Prophet of Allah, upon him be peace, prostrate and repeat the words of the tree as related by the man from his dream."
Now, as is apparent, the man who had the dream had so completely absorbed the teachings of Islam that even in his sleep they gave fruit to his soul. But, more importantly, we learn that the heart of the Prophet, the Master, enveloped in the love of Allah, could be moved by anything spiritual so that it picked up the words of the dua ascribed to the tree, and retained them so that the Prophet could repeat them in his own prostration. Indeed, the harmony of the Prophets with their Lord is one that reverberates at the slightest touch.

Blindspot!
Denial
Denial means we act as if the present is good enough. It is defence against the woundedness of the present and a rejection of any possibility beyond continuous improvement. Our denial of the destruction of the environment is a good example. Denial in this case takes the form of wanting more data or holding the belief that technology is a god that can surmount any obstacle. It often agrees there is a problem, but then trivializes its existence or its cost.
Denial is a defining feature of addiction. In creating the communities we live in, we are addicted to urban centres and rural towns that don't work for all, to a world of large class differences, to a place where we consider people on the margin to not be our brothers and sisters. We are addicted to accepting the illusion of safety that we get from allowing large systems to name the game and define the conversation.

Ghafir (The Forgiver)
Chapter 40: Verse 56 (Partial)

Puffing Up
"And they have pride in their hearts and will fail to reach it"

When a man feels superiority over others and with this a sort of inward elation, this is called pride. It differs from vanity in as much as vanity means consciousness of one's elation while pride requires a subject, an object and a feeling of elation. Suppose a man is born solitary in the world, he may be vain but not proud, because in pride man considers himself superior to others for certain qualities of his self. He allots one position to his self and another to others, and then thinks that his position is higher, and is therefore elated. This "puffed up" feeling which imparts a sense of "touch me not" is called pride.
lbn Abbas says that the above sentence in the Quran means that the thought of inward greatness will be denied to them. This thought is the source of inward and outward actions, which are so to speak the fruits of it.

A proud man will not tolerate any other to be on equal terms with himself. In private and in public he expects that all should assume a respectful attitude towards him and, acknowledging his superiority, treat him as a higher being. They should greet him first, make way for him wherever he walks; when he speaks everyone should listen to him and-never try to oppose him. He is a genius and people are like asses. They should be grateful to him, seeing that he is so condescending. Such proud men are found especially among the 'Ulama'. Sages are ruined by their pride.

Virtues are the doors of Paradise, but pride and self- esteem lock them all. So long as man feels elated he will not like for others what he likes for himself. His self-esteem will deprive him of humility, which is the essence of righteousness. He will neither be able to discard enmity and envy, resentment and wrath, slander and scorn, nor will he be able to cultivate truth and sincerity, and calmly listen to any advice. In short, there is no evil which a proud man will not inevitably do in order to preserve his elation and self-esteem. Vices are like a chain of rings linked together which entangle his heart. Therefore, an atom of pride is Satan's spark, which secretly consumes the nature of the sons of Adam.

Fasting in Shaban

Ayesha said: "I never saw the Messenger of Allaah fast a complete month except for Ramadan, and I have never seen him fast more in a month than he did in Shaban." [Bukhaari, Muslim]

Usamah ibn Zaid inquired: "O Messenger of Allaah, I never find you fasting in any month like you do during the month of Shaban." The Prophet responded: "That is the month the people neglect. It comes between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are raised to the Lord of the Worlds. I love that my deeds be raised while I am fasting." [An-Nasaa'i, authenticated by ibn Khuzaimah. Hasan according to al-Albaani]

Narrated Abu Hurairah, Allaah's Messenger said: "When the month of Shaban is halfway, do not fast." [Reported by the five, Ahmad disapproved it].

As-San`aanee says in Subul us-Salaam: "One can fast provided he has to observe a compensatory fasting (in lieu of the Fard - obligatory ones) or the other prescribed ones which may be categorised as Wajib (compulsory). However, the volitional fasting is prohibited lest one should be subjected to exhaustion and weakness that may in turn render the Ramadan obligatory fasting difficult for him."

Crying Like A Baby When was the last time you cried like a baby?
We can't afford not to be crying in front of Allah, the Merciful, All-Aware.
Tears flow when we remember how much Allah has blessed us with and how much we disobey Him. We can never repay Allah for everything we have, yet we still blatantly commit sins both big and small: whether it's backbiting, hurting other human beings, not standing up for the truth, treating our family badly, lying, doing good deeds to show off, cheating, etc.
Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said he would rather shed two tears from the fear of Allah than give a thousand dinars in charity.
And the most telling example of a man who few would think would cry because of Allah is Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. He was known for being strong, fearless, and uncompromising when it came to matters of faith. Yet, Abdullah ibn Isa said that Umar had two black streaks on his face because of constant weeping.
He feared Allah so much that he once said, "If someone announced from the heavens that everybody will enter Paradise except one person, I would fear that that person would be me."
Umar was one of the strongest believers. Yet he cried and feared Allah. And Abu Bakr, he was simply known for his crying. These people loved to serve human beings in the day and spent time begging God to save humanity at night. May Allah be pleased with them.
Let's be more contemplative and pray for an awareness of and forgiveness for our sins, as well as softness in our hearts. If Umar the brave and pious did it, we have even more need and urgency to do it.

"Tell them Daddy's not home!!"

The different forms of lying --by Asma bint Shameem

"So you see," said Hamza's father as he finished reading the storybook,
"A Muslim never lies and always tells the truth. That's what Islam teaches us."

Just then, the telephone bell rang sharply in the house. As little Hamza ran to answer it, his father called out, "If it is for me, tell them Daddy is not home!!"
Subhaan Allah!

This is just one the scenarios in our everyday lives. We claim to be Muslims and unhesitatingly say that we are proud to follow it, but when it comes to putting our words into actions, unfortunately, we are far from it. We teach our children one thing but we do another. We preach piety but we ourselves don't practice it.

We lie in our everyday lives and in our dealings with everyone yet we are totally unaware of it.
There are many of us who, pray and fast, and are the first to criticize others. But our practical lives are full of all forms of lying, fraud and dishonesty. And we see examples of such lying left and right, day in and day out.

And lying doesn't just mean out rightly telling untruths to someone on their face. Lying includes all kinds of 'little white lies', deceit, deceptions and forgery.
So, telling your kid to say "Daddy's not home' when, in fact, you are right there is absolutely a from of lying.

And not fulfilling your promises on purpose, when you had the power to do so, is a form of lying.

And cheating in the exams is a form of lying.

Your 'friend' marking you present, although you were absent, is another form of lying.

Faking a 'doctor's note' when in reality, you were not sick, you just overslept or were too lazy to go to work or school is also lying.

Telling the cop that your wife is having surgery or your kid is sick, (or whatever else excuses one can think of) when he pulls you over for speeding is also lying.

Dishonesty in your business dealings as well as in your interaction with others is lying.

Giving false witness is one of the gravest forms of lying.

Making a false claim that your injury happened at work, although it didn't, so that you could get compensation is lying.

Pretending to be of low income and applying for government aid, although you are not in need of it, is another form of lying and deception.

Forging or altering university certificates to get a job or visa, is just plain and simple, lying and fraud.

Altering a bill to 'save' some money or for insurance purposes or some other kind of personal gain is also trickery and deceit.

And the list goes on and on.......

We forget that Ibaadah doesn't mean just praying and fasting. TRUE Ibaadah includes our 'Mu'amalaat', how we deal with others, Muslims as well as non-Muslims, our manners and our behavior.
We forget that lying is on of the MAJOR SINS.
The
Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Shall I not tell you of the greatest of major sins?"
They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Association of others with Allah, disobedience towards one's parents" and he was reclining, but he SAT UP and said: "And false speech and false witness."
And we forget that lying is one of the signs of the hypocrites.
The
Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is entrusted with something he breaks that trust." (al-Bukhaari, Muslim)
We also forget that any apparent 'gain' that we get from all these forms of lying is not actually any gain at all.

Actually, any money that we earn or save is all haraam because we didn't earn it lawfully. And it is one of the reasons why dua is rejected by Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta'ala.

Remember the Hadeeth of the
Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam):
"Then he mentioned a man who had been traveling for a long time and was dishevelled and dusty; he stretches out his hands towards the heavens and says, 'O Lord, O Lord', but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, his clothing is haraam. He is nourished by haraam, so how can his du'aa' be accepted?" (
Muslim)
And one of the biggest harms of lying is that it is the key to the door of Hellfire.

The
Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:
"Beware of telling lies, for lying leads to immorality and immorality leads to Hellfire. A man will keep telling lies and striving to tell lies until he is recorded with Allah as a liar." (
Muslim)

Thus we as Muslims, must learn to recognize the different forms of lying as we come across them. We must realize what being truthful really means. It means speaking the truth and saying and doing things that reflect reality. We have to remember the gravity of sin involved in lying and strive to the best of our ability to tell the truth under all circumstances, no matter what the outcome.
If you fear Allah, He will find ways out of all difficulties for you and provide for you from means you never even imagined.
"
And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things." (Surah Talaaq:2-3)

Isn't the above ayah enough reminder for us??!!
"O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are TRUE (in word and deeds)." [al-Tawbah:119]
'Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt, for truthfulness is certainty and tranquillity, whilst lying is doubt and confusion." (
Saheeh- al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa'i, and Ahmad)

Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)."

Al-Ankabut (The Spider)
Chapter 29: Verse 3 (Partial)

God's Justice
"Allah will most certainly ascertain those who spoke the truth and those who lied."

When one reads this verse, a likely question that arises is: since God knows fully what everyone's conduct will be, what is the point in testing him? The answer is that as long as a person does not commit a certain action, irrespective of his ability to do so, the dictates of justice require that he should neither be rewarded nor punished. One person might be potentially trustworthy and another potentially untrustworthy. However, unless they act in one manner or the other, it is discordant with God's justice to reward or punish them only on the basis of His knowledge of those actions that will take place in the future.
God, no doubt, has knowledge of both the past and the future, yet this does not have a bearing on the manner in which He will dispense justice. He does not punish anyone simply because he is inclined to steal or because he is likely to steal in the future. Rather, His punishment is contingent upon the person actually stealing. By the same token, God does not bestow His rewards on someone just because they will grow into excellent believers or as excellent fighters in God's cause. On the contrary, this person too only earns his reward by dint of his actually having sincere faith and striving in God's cause.

Understanding the Prophet's Life
Broken Vow
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who took an oath and (later on) found another thing better than that, he should do that which is better, and expiate for the vow (broken by him). [Muslim]
The expiation for breaking an oath consists of options in the order in which Allah mentioned them in the Quran (Maidah 5: 89):
1. Feeding ten poor person with the average kind of food that one feeds his family, or
2. Clothing them, or
3. Freeing a slave.

The one who does one of these things has fulfilled his duty and done what was required of him. If he is unable to do any of these three things, then he moves to the option of fasting, and he must fast three days.
The quantity of food that must be given to each poor person is roughly 1.5 kilograms (1/2 s`) of food. The total would be roughly 15 kilograms of food. Clothing a person is what is sufficient for a person to wear to prayer.
There is no country in the world without needy or poor people. Even in a wealthy country, a person who is poor and hungry is still poor and hungry. However, if it is difficult to distribute the food, or there is a fear of giving it to people who are not deserving, then one may appoint someone more experienced like a charitable organization to distribute the food on his behalf. One may even give that agency money to purchase the food or clothing on his behalf and then distribute it to the poor.

One may distribute this food or clothing in another country. At times, this may be the better option, especially when there is a famine or natural disaster somewhere in the world where people desperately need assistance.

On the other hand, it would not be good for the one expiating for the broken oath to decide to carry out that expiation in some poorer country as a means of saving money, since the cost of food in his or her own country and consequently the cost of feeding the poor is much higher than elsewhere.

Al-Mujadila (She Who Pleaded)
Chapter 58: Verses 1-2

God Hears and Responds
"God has heard the words of she who disputes with you regarding her husband and made her complaint to God. God hears your conversation. Verily God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. Those of you who shun their wives by zihar - they are not their mothers. Their  mothers are only those women who gave birth to them. Indeed they utter words that are unjust and false; but God is Absolving of Sins, All-Forgiving."

It may have been anger that made Aws ibn Samit reject his wife Khawla bint Thalaba with the vulgar expression, "To me, you are like the backside of my mother." Whatever the reason, after so many years of marriage, these words reduced Khawla to the status of his mother's behind (completely devoid of sensual sensation). Moreover, according to Arab custom, there was no way to revoke the declaration of zihar. Henceforth, it was prohibited for Aws to touch Khawla, yet she was not free of the marital bond. Sympathetic family and friends had no power to override such norms and customs. Khawla's only chance was to appeal to a power higher than social custom and patriarchal authority. And so, Khawla complained to God.
Complaining to God is not difficult; the challenge is eliciting a satisfactory response. In what Marshall Hodgson termed the "Irano-Semitic" tradition, the expected response from God entailed not only spiritual comforting but also social transformation. At the individual level, God could send a sign: a kind stranger with food and comforting words, the sun breaking free of the rain clouds, a heavenly vision appearing in a dream. Transforming society, on the other hand, required a different kind of intervention. It is for this purpose that God sent prophets with authority to speak on His behalf, empowered to overturn the existing social order.
When Khawla first went to the Arabian prophet to complain of the injustice done to her, she was disapointed. Muhammad indicated that existing customs remained normative unless God revealed a new ruling, and the Prophet had received no revelation about this issue. Khawla did not give up hope, for she knew that this custom was unjust; she continued to complain to God, and waited near His Messenger, expecting him to receive a revelation. With the above revelation God confirmed Khawla's conviction that what had been done to her was unjust and was to be prohibited by law.

Clear and Succinct
When we talk during our visits, we should say only what befits the situation and be brief. We shouldn't prolong our speech, our talk should be clear, concise and to the point, we should not talk and talk and talk. Al-Bukhari reported that Anas said: "The Prophet's, peace be upon him, speech was clear and succinct, neither too long not too short, and he disliked chattering and ranting." Similarly Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated a hadith in which Aisha said: "The Prophet spoke [so few words] that you could count his words."

The Meaning of Citizenship

The conventional definition of citizenship is concerned with the act of voting and taking a vow to uphold the constitution and laws of a country. This is narrow and limiting. Too many organizations that are committed to sustaining democracy in the world and at home have this constrained view of citizenship. Citizenship is not about voting, or even about having a vote.
The idea of what it means to be a citizen is too important and needs to be taken back to its more profound value. Citizenship is a state of being. It is a choice for activism and care. A citizen is one who is willing to do the following:
  • Hold oneself accountable for the well-being of the larger collective of which we are a part.
  • Choose to own and exercise power rather than defer or delegate it to others.
  • Enter into a collective possibility that gives hospitable and restorative community its own sense of being.
  • Acknowledge that community grows out of the possibility of citizens. Community is built not by specialized expertise, or great leadership, or improved services; it is built by great citizens.
  • Attend to the gifts and capacities of all others, and act to bring the gifts of those on the margin into the centre.

Al-Naml (The Ants)
Chapter 27: Verse 18

Communication
Then, when they reached the valley of the ants, an ant said, 'Ants! Enter your dwellings so that Sulayman and his troops do not crush you unwittingly.'

The Quran supplies an interesting piece of information when talking about Prophet Sulayman's (peace be upon him) armies and mentions that there is an advanced "communications system" among the ants.
The scientific research made on ants in this century has shown that there is an incredible communications network among these creatures. In an article published in the National Geographic magazine, this point is explained:
Huge and tiny, an ant carries in her head multiple sensory organs to pick up chemical and visual signals vital to colonies that may contain a million or more workers, all of which are female. The brain contains half a million nerve cells; eyes are compound; antennae act as nose and fingertips. Projections below the mouth sense taste; hairs respond to touch.
Even if we do not notice it, the ants have quite a different method of communication in virtue of their sensitive sensing organs. They employ these sense organs at every moment of their lives, from finding their prey to following each other, from building their nests to fighting. They have a communication system which astonishes us, as human beings with intellect, with their 500,000 nerve cells squeezed into their bodies of 2 or 3 millimetres. What we should keep in mind here is that the half a million nerve cells and the complex communication system mentioned above belongs to an ant which in bulk is almost one millionth of a human being.
The ants, who constitute an orderly social structure with these various responses, lead a life based on mutual news exchange and they have no difficulty in achieving this correspondence. We could say that ants, with their impressive communication system, are hundred percent successful on subjects that human beings sometimes cannot resolve nor agree upon by talking (e.g. meeting, sharing, cleaning, defence, etc.)

Leaving Heirs Wealthy
Sad ibn Abi Waqqas, who wanted to make out a will giving away in charity everything that he owned went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! I have a lot of wealth and only my daughter to inherit it from me. Should I bequeath all of my wealth in charity?"

The Prophet (peace be upon him) told him that he should not do so. Then Sad suggested bequeathing two-thirds of his wealth to charity. When the prophet again refused, Sad then suggested half of his wealth.

At this point the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "One-third, and that is still too much. It is better for you to leave your heirs wealthy, rather than leaving them dependent and begging from others.

Dejection

Dejection is a state of sad thought, depression and a feeling of being worthless. This could be a result of anger with self or someone else, unexpressed anger, failure and frustration. Dejection is a deadly disease which can harm the body acutely or on a chronic basis and can irreversibly destroy one's relationships. It is during this state of dejection that people have suicidal thoughts and sometimes actions. During anger a person tries to manifest his verbal and physical strength. However, while in dejection, he completely gives up, thinking he is worthless.
Dejection can be the result of losses, financial or of a dear one, or even failure in work, education and business. Many times terminally ill patients, without any hope of getting better, would also be dejected. Sometimes dejection or depression is due to a chemical imbalance just like anger, whether it is a psychotropic condition with depletion of brain amines, epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, or hormonal imbalance like hypothyroidism and Addison's disease. Therefore, in all cases of depression, when a physician sees them, he does and he must evaluate them for a treatable organic cause.
The way to fight dejection is a mind-control phenomenon. We must realize that we are not in control of our destiny. Certain failures and adversity have been designed to teach us certain lessons. We must know that someone else is in control of our past, present and future. Caliph Ali once said, "What makes me a believer in God is the fact that I realize that after doing everything humanly possible to make certain things go right, it goes wrong unexpectedly, making me believe that someone else was in control of that situation, not me."
The remedy for dejection is hope. God made hopelessness unlawful by saying, "Do not despair of God's mercy." Thus, no matter at what level of despair, depression and frustration we are, whether loss of a loved one or a job, or as the result of anger from someone else, we must not give up hope as there is a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel. The greatest hope is mercy from God.
During dejection, there is darkness, but in hope, there is light. Therefore, one must pray for this light to illuminate the heart so that we can see beyond what is causing the suffering today.

Al-Isra (The Night Journey)
Chapter 17: Verse 82 (Partial)

Healing and Mercy
"We send down (stage by stage) in the Quran, that which is a healing and mercy."

The results of researches conducted over a group of volunteers from the USA who were subject to a recitation of the Quran were striking. A trace of a tranquilizing effect was recorded on 97% of the participants. Although many of these volunteers did not know Arabic, they nonetheless experienced involuntary physiological changes that led to notable alleviation in the acuity of tension they were observed to possess in their nervous systems prior to the experiment.
Furthermore, an EEG experiment during the Quran recitation revealed that the encephalic waves moved at a slower pattern, indicating a state of deep calmness. Non-Arabic speaking people felt assured, quite, and relaxed when listening to the Quranic verses, in spite of their inability to understand their meaning. This is one the miracles of the Holy Quran.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, revealed this miracle by saying, "People assembled in one of the houses of Allah (Mosques), and who recite and study the Book of Allah, find that a tranquility prevails over them, and that mercy encompasses them, and that the angels surround them, and that Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him."

Understanding the Prophet's Life
The Turning Point
It is not known exactly when the Night Journey and Ascension took place, but it was certainly before the Hijrah (emigration from Makkah) to Madinah. It was said to have happened either three years or 18 months before the Hijrah.
Al-Isra was a land-to-land journey that Allah Almighty caused His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to make from Makkah to Jerusalem, that is, from Almighty Allah's Sacred House to Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Miraj was a land-to-heaven journey from Jerusalem to the heavens. It was a journey to a place that no human being other than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had ever reached [or has reached since]. It was a journey to the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary, whose place only Almighty Allah knows.
Such two journeys were a turning point in the Prophet's life and in the course of his call in Makkah, especially after all the suffering he (peace and blessings be upon him) had faced at the hands of the Quraysh.
Allah Almighty wanted Al-Isra and Al-Miraj be an alleviation and relief to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He Almighty wanted to tell His Prophet that if the people of the earth had let him down, the people of heaven were there to support him; if the people of the earth had rejected his call, Allah Almighty would receive him and His Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) would follow him and he would be their imam.
We must believe that Allah Almighty is with us and that He Almighty will grant us victory and make Islam prevail, as He, Most High, always supports the true believers.
That journey was an honour and compensation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Almighty Allah. It was also a preparation for him to the following stage of his call. A few years later, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would migrate to Madinah, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) would lead a life of strife and jihad and confront the Arab tribes and other parties that would stand as one man against his international call.
Prophet Muhammad's being received by other Prophets of Allah Almighty in Al-Aqsa Mosque and his leading them in Salah (ritual Prayer) there indicates that leadership was moved to a new nation and to a new Prophethood.

Whats in it for Me? Five Advantages of Hijab
  • I cant be messed with! Hijab protects me Hijab identifies a Muslim woman as a person of high moral standards to reduce her chances of being harassed.
  • I am liberated from slavery to physical perfection Society makes women desire to become perfect objects. The multitudes of alluring fashion magazines and cosmetic surgeries show womens enslavement to beauty. The entertainment industry pressures teens to believe that for clothes, less is better. When we wear Hijab, we vow to liberate ourselves from such desires and serve only God.

  • I dont let others judge me by my hair and curves! In schools and professional environments, women are often judged by their looks or bodiescharacteristics they neither chose nor created. Hijab forces society to judge women for their value as human beings, with intellect, principles, and feelings. A woman in Hijab sends a message, Deal with my brain, not my body!

  • I feel empowered and confident In contrast to todays teenage culture, where anorexia and suicide are on the rise, as women attempt to reach an unattainable ideal of beauty, Hijab frees a woman from the pressure to fit in. She does not have to worry about wearing the right kind of jeans or the right shade of eyeshadow. She can feel secure about her appearance because she cares to please only Allah.

  • I feel the bond of unity Hijab identifies us as Muslims and encourages other Muslim sisters to greet us with the salutation of peace, Assalamu Alaikum. Hijab draws others to us and immerses us in good company.

Ibrahim (Abraham)
Chapter 14: Verse 22 (Partial)

Polytheism
"Do not blame me but blame yourselves. Here, neither I can come to your rescue, nor can you come to mine. I disavow your former act of associating me in the past with Allah."

No one professes, at the doctrinal level, that Satan is a partner of God in His divinity. Nor does anyone worship Satan. In fact, so far as verbal expressions go, people generally curse Satan. Ironically, the same people who curse him, also follow his ways, at times consciously, and at other times unconsciously. It is precisely this which has been termed as associating Satan with God in His divinity.
Polytheism does not merely assume one form, viz. associating others with God in matters of belief. There is also another form which consists of exalting someone to a position where it becomes imperative to follow him without any sanction for it from God, or even in opposition to God's command. Such an act, according to the Quran, is tantamount to setting up a partner to God in His godhead. A person who follows someone in this unreserved fashion is guilty of setting up a partner to God even if he keeps on abusing and cursing him. Even if such a person is not treated on a par with those who commit polytheism at the doctrinal level, nevertheless his act will be considered highly reprehensible.

Understanding the Prophet's Life
Falsehood is falsehood
Abdullah Ibn Amir narrated: "Once my mother called me when the Prophet was present in my house. My mother asked me to come and said that she would give me a certain thing. He asked what did she want to give? She said that she wanted to give me a date (fruit). The Prophet said: 'If you had not given him this date, then the committing of a falsehood would have been entered into your record of deeds.'" (Abu Daud).
Abu Huraira says that the Prophet has said: "Anybody who called a child saying that he would give him a certain thing, and did not give it, then it is a lie." (Ahmed)
Adoption of straight dealing and telling the truth has been very strictly insisted upon, so much so that it has been enjoined upon to take care about this in even small household matters.
Asma Bint Yazid narrates that she once asked the Messenger of Allah: "If one of us women stated that she had no desire to have a certain thing even though she had that desire, then would it be considered a lie?" He replied: "Falsehood is written as falsehood, and a small falsehood is written as a small falsehood." (Muslim)

The Anti-Drugs
If you're depressed, angry, hurting, rebellious, fearful, insecure, or have some other hole in your life that needs to be filled, instead of filling it up by drinking or doing drugs, try something more satisfying and enduring. Just as you can become addicted to harmful substances or practices, you can also pick up positive addictions, and get high naturally! Here's a short list of positive addictions that may help you fill the potential holes in your life:
Exercise. Working out releases endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers and positive mood-makers. Have you heard of runner's high, that euphoric feeling you get while running? Truly, nothing can clear your head like a good workout can.
Service. Losing yourself in service to other has always been the best way to forget your own troubles.
Hobbies. Find something you love to do and get good at it. Whether it be photography, cooking, or astronomy, hobbies produce a natural high without the big crash afterward.
Family. No one cares more about you than your family, including cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. When you're hurting, cast your burdens upon them, instead of looking for another outlet.
Faith. Practicing your religion or beliefs alone or with others can give meaning and purpose to your life and offer you standards to live by.
Friends. In times of trouble, lean on good friends. Talk through your problems with them instead of the bottle.

Al-Kahf (The Cave)
Chapter 18: Verse 28

The Path full of hardship
"And keep your soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His presence: and let not your eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this life; and pay no heed to one whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his won desires, and whose [transgressions] have gone beyond all bounds."

Muslims should never forget that they are striving for Allah, the Almighty. The path to Allah is long and full of hardship. Heaven is surrounded by unpleasant obstacles while Hell is surrounded by everything pleasant to human lusts.

The road is difficult for those who fear to lose their money and secure future. The end of the road can never be reached by those who love leisure and pleasure, by the narrow minded and weak, the impatient and stingy, the arrogant and lazy, and by those who refuse to support what has been decided in the community.

The path of Islamic activism purifies and liberates a person and teaches one to be strong. It is a path of blessings and honour, but it requires patience and endurance, honesty, and sincerity. A path with these characteristics can be traversed only by those who are confident of the truth, and who rely on Allah always and everywhere.

Understanding the Prophet's Life
Trading with Allah
"And everyone goes out in the morning and sells himself, either freeing or destroying himself." [Muslim]
Every day humans are faced with new situations. Every morning we get up to do something. Every day we are either going to obey Allah or we are going to disobey Allah. In essence, every day we are going to be setting ourselves free from the Hell-fire or leading ourselves to the Hell-fire and our own destruction. Even those who sit and seemingly do absolutely nothing are, in reality, actually leading themselves to some result.
The one who is successful is the one who sells himself to Allah or buys his freedom from Allah. Trading with Satan on the other hand can never bring about anything beneficial because, in reality, he has nothing to offer. All he can offer are delusions and promises that end up to be punishment in the Hereafter.
People sell themselves for money, power, lusts and so forth. Many times, they are willing to give up on their dignity for these things. In reality, they are simply selling themselves in exchange for the Hell-fire.

Self-Confidence
Ibn Kathir reported that an influential man from Syria used to visit Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Caliph, in Madinah regularly; then, one day, having been away for longer than usual Umar enquired after him and was told that the man had taken to drinking heavily. Umar wrote him a letter saying:
For your sake, I praise God, there is no God but He. He forgives sins and accepts repentance; His punishment is severe and His bounty is infinite. There is no God but He, and all shall return to Him.
He then turned to those around him and asked them to pray that God might accept the man's repentance. When the letter arrived, the man kept repeating the words: "He forgives sins and accepts repentance; His punishment is severe." He was heard saying: "I am being warned of God's punishment and promised His forgiveness," until he broke down sobbing, and from that day he abstained from drinking for good. When the news reached Umar, he said: "This is what you should do when someone commits a misdemeanour. Advise him, reassure him gently, never let him lose his self-confidence, pray to God for his sake, and do not help Satan to mislead him."
Today there are professed Muslims who have all but given up on God's mercy, and whose sole preoccupation seems to be to castigate and belittle others.

Al-Isra (The Night Journey)
Chapter 17: Verse 16

Crime of Luxury
"And when it is Our will to destroy a town, We command its luxury-loving citizens, and they deal corruptly in it; thus the sentence upon it is justified, and We destroy it utterly."

Luxury is the cause of destruction in the course of history, as it is the cause of audacity. And equally certainly, luxury is a reason for punishment in the world to come, because it results in grave sin. But, it is not only the individual who loves luxury who will suffer destruction and punishment; the community that permits the existence of such luxury will be similarly afflicted.
The 'will' here referred to in the verse is not predestination in the commonly accepted sense, but rather the law of cause and effect, or of reason and result. If there are luxury-loving individuals in a community and the community allows them to remain so, doing nothing against them; if it refrains from checking the causes of luxury; if it leaves the luxury-loving to pursue their corrupt way; then all these factors, because of their very existence, are causes that will inevitably result in the destruction and the downfall of the community. Such is the meaning of 'will' in this verse. That is to say, the results are related to the reasons, and the effects must follow where the causes occur; for such is the normative pattern which Allah has laid down for the universe and for all life.
There must be some outlet found for excessive resources. Generally, these outlets are trivial and take their form from the period and the social environment; but there comes a time when they pass this limit of triviality and take the form of license and depravity, both physical and mental, impeding not only themselves but also their followers in pursuing the way of truth; for so long as there are such, there will be weaklings who will flatter their pride, minister to their desires, and lose their personality like insects. Nor, is there anything strange in this; for lovers of luxury must have their easy, perverse, and sickly life; they must gratify their desires and have their pleasures; they must have around them followers and courtiers who are submissive.
This is what Islam sees in the crime of luxury; it is a crime that is basically individual, but when the community submit to it and does not check such an evil with hand and voice and heart, then it is a crime that produces its own fruits. The disease extends to the whole body of the community and issues ultimately in its destruction.

Understanding the Prophet's Life
A Women of Paradise
Ibn Abbas said to Ata b. Rabah: "Do you see that black lady? She approached the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: 'I suffer from epilepsy and during a fit, my body becomes exposed. So please supplicate Allah on my behalf.'

"Then the Prophet said to her: 'If you choose, you might rather bear it patiently and you will attain Paradise on account of it. Or if you like, I will beseech Allah to cure you.'"

"She said: 'I will bear it patiently. But my body gets exposed, so please beseech Allah that my body will no longer be exposed.'"

"The Prophet (peace be upon him) beseeched Allah for this."

[Sahih al-Bukhari (5652) and Sahih Muslim (2576)]

The woman's name was Suayrah though some say her name was Shuqayrah al-Habashiyyah al-Asadiyyah. She was known as Umm Zufar. She had been Khadijah's lady in waiting. After Khadijah's demise, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to show her extra deference and respect. When she grew older, she became afflicted with epilepsy, and her body would become exposed due to the severity of her seizures.

Here are five things we can learn from this incident:

1. We need to turn to Allah with our needs. It is Allah alone who can cure our ills and alleviate our suffering. Medical doctors admit that faith has a great affect on healing, often more pronounced than medications, though medications certainly can benefit us.

2. We also learn how virtuous the quality of patience is. When we bear illness in patience and fortitude, it is a means by which our sins are forgiven and by which we attain Allah's blessings and entrance into Paradise.

3. We can also see how the Prophet's glad tidings were a help and a comfort to her. It gave her hope. The role of a positive attitude in coping with illness and in aiding the recovery process is well-known.

4. We can see the respect that the Prophet (peace be upon him) showed this woman by his giving her the choice. He respected her right to make the decision for herself in a matter that affected her life. He let her know her options, while showing that he was well aware of the extent of her suffering. He knew it was best for her to be patient if she had the fortitude to bear her illness. However, he trusted her to make the decision for herself.

5. We can learn from this woman the value of modesty. We can see her concern for keeping her body from being exposed when she had a seizure, in her asking the Prophet (peace be upon him) to beseech Allah to protect her modesty when she was not able to control her movements and was free from all blame. We can also see how the Prophet (peace be upon him) readily complied with her request.

Ten Useless Assets
1. Knowledge that is not acted upon.
2. Deeds that have no sincerity or is not based on following the righteous examples of others.

3. Money that is hoarded, as the owner neither enjoys it during this life nor obtains any reward for it in the Hereafter.

4. The heart that is empty of love and longing for Allah, and of seeking closeness to Him.

5. A body that does not obey and serve Allah.

6. Love of Allah without following His orders or seeking His pleasure.

7. Time that is not spent in expiating sins or seizing opportunities to do good.

8. A mind that thinks about useless matters.

9. Service to those who do not bring you closer to Allah, nor benefit you in your life.

10. Hope and fear of whoever is under the authority of Allah and in His hand; while he cannot bring any benefit or harm to himself, nor death, nor life; nor can he resurrect himself.

Al-Rad (Thunder)
Chapter 13: Verse 23 (Partial)

Together in Eden
"Gardens of perpetual bliss: they shall enter there, as well as the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their offspring."

Parents, spouses and the offspring, although righteous, might not deserve the same rank and level of Paradise, but in honour of the exemplary soul, would be allowed in the same rank and level.
In fact, Ibn Abbas has said that they could be very ordinary believers. Wahidi has pointed out that if they happen to be believers of the same quality, then their entry would be on their own merits and cannot be considered a favour shown. Therefore, they would have to be of lower status granted a Paradise of higher rank, for the pleasure of the higher rank of the person in discussion. Further, as Razi has pointed out, the rule is both for man and woman, husband and wife: whichever is of higher rank will have the other with him or her in Paradise in honour of his or her true faith and righteous deeds.

Understanding the Prophet's Life
Destroyer of Pleasures
"Remember the destroyer of pleasures - death - often. Verily, no one remembers it during straitened times in his life except that it makes the matter easier upon him. And no one remembers it during times of ease except that it makes the matter tighter upon him." - Al-Bayhaqi
When one feels disappointed by the lack of comforts in this world and then remembers death, he will realize that there is no real comfort or joy in this world for one to be depressed about. Hence, his affair will be made easier by remembering death. And, during times of ease and material comfort, when one remembers death, one keeps oneself from getting overly attached to and fond of these worldly items. The person will realize that such things are not necessities but it is faith and good deeds that are needed.
The believer must always be conscious of the fact that he is living in the shade of death. At any moment, death may overtake him. When this realization is clear in the person's mind, he will constantly be preparing for his death. And there is only one way to actually prepare for death: by performing good deeds and abstaining from evil deeds.

Cool Tips!
Top 5 skills to teach your kids this summer
While we want our kids to relax after a grueling school year, it's important their brains don't turn to mush while school's out.
There are many productive things kids can do, but here is our list of top five skills they should learn to succeed in school and beyond.
1. Learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
"And if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people...." (Quran 5:32)
What could be a more useful skill than one that helps preserves life itself? Check out your local Red Cross to find out where and when the next CPR class is being offered.
2. Writing a letter to the editor
This teaches assertiveness, clarity in thought, and basic writing skills all in one. All it requires is being able to write simple English. Find an article that your child feels strongly about in the local newspaper. Discuss it first, then put your thoughts down on paper. Then help him or her compose a letter to the editor and send it off. If it gets published, post it up on the fridge!
3. Swimming
Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, emphasized teaching children how to swim. It is not only great exercise and fun, but it could also save your life. Check out your local park district or gym for lessons.
4. Managing money
Help your kids avoid problems like debt, impulsive shopping, and overspending by teaching them money management skills this summer. If you already don't, start giving your child a weekly allowance. Then, help him or her draft a budget of how to spend and save. Also, make sure they give to charity.
5. Volunteering for a cause
Giving and not receiving any monetary return is a skill critical in our increasingly materialistic culture. Assess your child's skills, talents, and interests, and find a volunteer opportunity for him or her this summer. Some ideas include: helping peace and justice groups; helping younger kids learn English; making and delivering meals to an elderly person who cannot get out much; writing articles for a non-profit organization's website or helping with its technical aspects; answering phone calls, etc.
