I am the daughter of a Blossburg native who was born there in 1909 and
lived there until 1925 when the family moved to Rochster, New York. It
may have only been 16 years, but as the most formative years, Blossburg
made a lasting impact on Dad and his 5 siblings. (All but the oldest were
born in Blossburg). When my cousins and I were growing up, we were
entertained with all the stories. In 1959, I made the first of several
visits to the old home town on the way back from a trip to Washington.
(Good old Route 15). Whenever my aunt and uncle drove up to visit from
North Carolina, they would always stop to pay a visit to "the shrine" (
as we used to call the house where they grew up). I made another visit
in 1983 just before my younger daughter was born. Even as Dad and my
aunts and uncles grew older, whenever they got together, the Blossburg
stories and the stories of their younger years would flow as if they had
just happened.
In December, 1994, we celebrated Dad's 85th birthday by taking our whole
family (Dad, Mom, myself, my husband and our 2 daughters) for an
overnight visit. We first stopped in Wellsboro where Dad reminisced
about traveling there with HIS dad. Of course we stopped into Dunhams,
too. Our overnight stay in the Mountain Laurel B&B was wonderful and
Dad gave us the story about that building's "dark past". The next day, I
videotaped the town with Dad giving a running commentary. Coming up Main
Street he could tell us what all the storefronts used to be and what used
to be in the Post Office Plaza. The high points came when we met the
Trowbridges who now live in "our" house and Isabelle Berguson who knew
the family way back when and was a playmate of my aunt's. Hearing Dad
and Isabelle reminisce was really something.
Because of that visit, we learned about the Coal Festival and we came for
3 years. In 1995 our daughter won the Duck Race! Our schedule for the
last several years has not let us return - but we hope to.
I'm sorry to report that Dad died in mid March - just 3 months after his
90th birthday. Blossburg and the warm memories of his childhood there
figured prominently in his eulogy. It was still a part of him -even 74
years after moving away.
Sometime soon I am hoping to drive down with my aunt and another
Rochesterian who was born in Blossburg so that they too can take a stroll
down Memory Lane. So, even though I never actually lived in Blossburg
the warmth of the town has surely had an effect on me too.

P.S. Dad played basketball for BHS (as it was then called) in 1924 and
1925. It is hard to believe because he was no more than 5'10" but
basketball players were shorter in those days. Do any of you know anyone
who might have been on the team with him?

Hi Janet!
My family is on this list too -- my dad is a great-grandson of William
B. Wilson. We put a biographical piece on the blossburg.org website.
We've been slowly getting in touch with other relatives as well.
Best,
Heidi

Sheesh... in comparision to where I live now and have lived for the past
10 years, Blossburg still has the best community facilities. State
College wins on arts, tho. I live in a suburb (Maryland City) of a
suburb (Laurel) of Washington DC & Baltimore MD. There are TWO
elementary schools within walking distance, but the community park is
way outside the community and the pool, which is in the community, costs
a LOT of money to join. There are no community gathering places.

Excellent question! As one of those who has moved away, I have found
that Blossburg provided me with very different experiences than most
people have had. Very few people graduated from high school in a class
of 45 (1990). My college dorm was bigger than NPHS. I've noticed that
many other folks didn't really know their classmates, and certainly not
parents, aunts & uncles, grandparents. (Shel, feel free to comment
here; you're a city girl.) They don't know what it's like to know
people and families for really long periods of time (like going all thru
school with the same people is very rare).
In sociology-speak, social networks in Blossburg are very strong and tie
people together much more deeply than in other (non-rural) areas. And I
think Blossburg has a specific thing that no one else has: The Island.
Many of the folks who have introduced themselves have mentioned the
Island as a favorite Blossburg location. Why? It's very unusual to have
a central park area with all the sports fields, pool, playground,
community center etc. Usually, those spaces are more spread out and
age-segregated (and often race and class separated). As kids, we all
bond there in addition to school - and that's why many of us have very
close friends not in our class. In comparison to even Mansfield or
Wellsboro, we definitely have the best community facilities.
So, that's why I come back. I might not ever live there again, but I
will always visit.
