Cuppy,

How did you get thease reports? They are great!!!! One thing on the
second report you will notice that I was the pilot. Also that report
was the prelim report and they guessed that it was because of the
left quartering wind. In fact we found out that it was wrong. I
sent the correction in but was probably lost in the mess that
paperwork normally goes through.

We found out when we replace the tail boom for the second time that
the wireing was wrong in the TM's. The TM did not account for the
difference in tailbooms. Seems the first tail boom we put on because
of the 90 degree gearbox attachment holes were elongated. When I
test flu or tried to test fly the aircraft I engaged the scass while
I was in the revepment. Everything was fine till I tried to pick it
up to a hover and then I ran out of pedal.

After replacing the tailboom the 2nd time we rolled the aircraft to
the center of the ramp and then tried the same thing with exactly the
same results. Upon input of left pedal, even with the nose into the
wind the scass would continue to give right pedal. This of course
would cause you to run out of left pedal. After switching the wires
we had no problem with the aircraft.

Cost the goverment and the Maintenancae guys a lot of sleepless
nights and Cpt Haugen about gave up on me. Anyway that was the rest
of the story.

I still would like to know how you got those mishap reports as I had
a mishap with a UH-1 while I was at Ft Eustis Va. I had cyclic lock
up and not many have landed or even survived an incident like that.

More later.

I'm going to try and convert the jpgs to a smaller file. Don't know
if I can but the file size is too great for the system.

Later,

Dave (ps enjoy the Big Brother pics)

Woody, Guys,

I don't know what to do. I'm not able to upload anymore photos as
the limit for Photos is 30M and that is all they give us. Any
suggestions as to how to beat this system?

I have about 75 more photos to post. Some I'll leave out but I've
got pictures of guys that I have no idea who they are. One was
sitting with me in an OH-6 when I went for a test flt. I don't
remember who the guy was. Lots of pictures of the CO and his Jeep
and the Flt Line and parties.

Let me know what I can do to post the pics.

Thanks,

Dave

Cuppy,

Yep... I finished the first 80 and cleaned them myself with a non
static brush. I talked with Wal-Mart yesterday and they said they
would be ready today so looking forward to them. I still haven't
found the other carrasel that had other pic in.

I hope you don't come in your shorts when you see 457 comming in with
the skid off. I also have pics of "Big Brother" with me next to it.

I haven't decided how I'm going organize it and what to title the
folder. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Should have some of them posted by tomorrow 05-14-2002.

Later,

Dave

Woody,

We didn't know you had left town. Just got a little quiet with you
not arround. Thought mabe you had been rounded up in the hooscall.
Don't think I spelled that right but you know what I mean. Out west
they don't call them jails.

I'm my ol ornry self today and glad its Friday. Still haven't taken
the slides to Wal-Mart but at least I've got the ones sorted that I
want jpg's of. Found several with Cpt Haugen and Lt Huss in them
pluss Sp4 Galvin. Don't remember a lot of the guys in them so will
need help from you guys to identify them. Still looking for the
close up pics of 457. I have the one with it on approach but I
thought I had one of it hovering with the skid off. Got some good
pics of the messhall and the Co's jeep. One at night.

See I'm getting you all hyped up so when the pics get posted you will
know what your getting or not!

Glad your back,

Sorry about the C troops member mother dying.

My Mother died 29 Years ago this September. I still go to her grave
and put flowers on. My Dad died when I was 6 so mom had a big job
ahead of her.

I wish all the Mothers a very Happy Mothers Day and let them know
that they are appreciated very much for all that they do.

Must go before this gets to be a book,

Dave

After I left the Cav in Jun 68 I went down to the 121st at Soc
Trang. I flew the firefly bird. Great mission. We had a 50 cal on
the left side and twin 60's on the right. The 60's were home made by
the grew chief and rigged with an old collective head so you could
fire both by depressing the start trigger on the old collective
head. The ship was call Viking Surprise ( later changed to Tiger
Surprise ). If my memory serves me right we solved the brass in the
tail rotor problem my rigging an ammo box to catch the brass. We also
double the maintance because of the vibrations. Lot's of fun to fly
because you could really kick some tail with it. Snake

Man You guys have all the fun. I was a C&C crewchief for C
Troop in late 68 - 69. We talked about getting a minigun for our
ship but the Maint officer said the vibration was too much. As for
a 50???WOW never had the chance - but the issue of brass in
the tail rotor does sound familiar. I was in the process of trading
some SKS's and AK's for a grenade launcher when I got shipped
home. the Navy guys in Vung Tau would strip all the guns off a
PBR when it sank and trade them off to guys like us. It's a
shame I wasn't able to extend my tour. I got busted for smoking
pot on the same day I put in my extension papers - so the old
man said no. It takes a year to really figure out all the hustles in
Nam so a guy doesn't really become dangerous until then. OH
Well I have my fantasies! Clear Left, Mikey

As for the five carrier groups - As the news keeps reporting there
are many hawks in the Bush admistration who want to go after
Saddam. The timetable is 2003. Considering that Bush is up
for reelection in late 2004 I would guess that we will invade Iraq
in late 03 or early 04. It would boost his approval ratingsa -
assuming we kick ass like in 91. My only concern is that
Saddam is not likely to sit by and watch us build up for 6 months
like he did last time. I figure he will start with the terrorism as
soon as he gets a whif of a buildup of American and Allied forces
. Let's see how it plays out -but having several carrier groups in
for overhaul during the tight budget times smells funny to me.
Looks like ass kickin time! Michael

my 1st 90 days in country was a c/c gunner..for a while i was treared
with a 50 on the rigth side and my ce had a home made mimi gun that
was very dangouse for a newbe....anyways staffa like the 50 as a
bunker buster which worked very well had a few bunker kills with it
ha .but i tell you the best kill i had with it was a sanpan one with
a motor on it .staffa tells me to kill the motor i we were bout a
50foot hover when i walk some rounds upthe the mud bank and mud went
higher than we were walk it across the sanpan and broke it in half
and came back for the motor which caught fire.a full 100 rounds and
it was fun shooting the big gun but had to set the head just about
every 100 rounds ..so that chap my ass and went back to a short
barrel 60which would light up the
day.......eeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.....clear up
left........tate

Woody,

I don't know mabe I made that decision. I was probably still a wobly
one and didn't know better. I don't think they took it off becaues
of the vibrations. If you guys had the 50 on the left side it
probably was throwing ammo links into the tail rotors. I remember
having to do some test flights for replacement of tail rotors in the
UH-1's. That was probably the reason.

Talk about a big gun. The M35 system on the Cobras was the big gun.
20mm on the left side with 3000 rds of ammo. When it was fired the
gunner in the front had to hold the door handle closed or the door
would come open from the blast. Also if you remember we had special
panels installed on the left side to keep from buckeling the
honeycomb panels. It was pretty accurate and used as a standoff
weapon against the 51cal the vc had.

Got to run this is Monday and its still technically the first of the
month.

Later,

Dave (cobra ip)

I traded someone in I think "C" troop out of a MINI and 50
and put them on one of my slicks while I was still in slicks. I
mounted the MINI on the CREWCHIEF (my) side and the 50 on the
gunners. I remember I didn't have them too damned long and we came to
the conclusion it was shaking the airframe apart.. so back to the
60's HEY DAVE, do you remember that? It was someone in MAINT. that
advised (made) me remove them.. Was that you you sorry

I didn't get around the c&c ship much...to much brass. It still
had the 50 on one side when I was there, feb.70-jan 71. Dont
remember them firing it much though. Of course, all things are
relative and a scout flying low level often doesn't hear the 50 til
it is used to get his ass out of a jam and then all of them sound
loud and GOOD!!!!! gunnerman, willie pete out

Hey Britt, now ain't you quite the memory man. You are right, now
that I read it, it is clear as day. His name was Vest. He was tall
and thin and older than average. He was flying my wing with Lt.
Kraft the day that Mc Cormick, Isbell, and I got shot down at Rach
Gia. He was the one that managed to get Mc Cormick out of the seat
and onto the C&C when it landed to pick them up.
I had helped Isbell to Krafts' ship and headed back for Mac when
Kraft grabbed me and told me to get in cause Vest was getting Mac.
Mac found my AK, ( I looked and I couldn't find the damned thing),
he used it till he got to the c&c and then threw the gun down. Still
pisses me off. That was one fine AK.
Kraft thought that he had taken a tail rotor hit and made a
running landing. First and last time for me. I figured that I made
it out of that shit just to get wasted on a screwed up gook runway.
We made it out fine though. Later, gunnerman, Bring her around hard
left, gook in the weeds 9 oclock,

Yea Troy, you're right I havent written anything in some time. I do,
however read the posts most everyday.
Is it possible that you have that Staff Sargents name wrong, I found
my origional EER from the 7/1 and it was written by a Charles Vest
and signed by Lt. McCormick. He had come there just as I was
leaving, never flew with him but I remember him as tall and thin. Of
course many people are tall to me. This was in the period when the
370th had just moved to the building recently vacated by the 611th
down at the end of the active.
Actually, I do have something to report. One of the bases that I
work on here in Hampton Roads is NOB. This is where five carrier
battle groups are home ported. The Enterprise is in the shipyard for
an overhaul, and the TR has just returned from Afganistan. The other
three groups are deployed somewhere, only the Washington group has
been mentioned in the news. No one has even mentioned the other
groups. If the West coast is doing the same thing there could be
three or four groups getting ready to do something.

It sure is quiet here. Been reading the same posts for a week
now and they haven't changed much. Not knocking you guys but, c'mon.
Something has to be happening out there more exciting than washing
your socks on a rock.
Hey, Britt and Stiddham, pop up here every now and again and
humor this old fart. It doesn't take a lot to keep me happy. Let me
smell some LSA and some dirty guns every so often and I feel good all
over. Picked up a m-48 mauser rifle in 8mm and 1400 rds of ammo for
it a while back. Been shooting it every chance I get. Even broke
out the old Ak and one of the M-1 carbines. Can't figure out why I
like that M-1 carbine. Its brother like to have gotten both me and
Britt killed one fine day.
The last helicopter ride I took was looking for two guys who
drowned on Rend Lake last year. Got to fly in a Kiowa. It sucked
all over. On top of that the guys stayed down for over 2 weeks
before they popped up. The water was really cold. They didn't
complain about it though. frag out, gunnerman
