Hello Everyone,

Just got the 2010 State Charitable Contributions Program from the job and
was looking for a way to make a regular contribution to either the Atlanta
Freethought Society or the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Inc.  If anyone
knows if either of these organizations are listed on the State Contributions
Program, I'd appreciate a heads-up.  Thanks,  Gean

"Stuff like this happen, or the beating of the young man in Chicago, and people
are having protests about same-sex marriage!!!"

This rape and the recent beating of the boy in Chicago are examples of the
brutality amongst our youth which, of course, need to be addressed and
countered. However, same-sex marriage is an issue of rights and should be
protested until they are given equal rights. I don't see it as either/or, both
of these are issues that need to be addressed.

Police: As many as 20 present at gang rape outside school dance

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

10 people involved in assault, 10 others watched and offered no help, police say
Richmond, California, police say student was gang raped for over two hours
Former student, 19, and 15-year-old arrested
Victim, 15, remains in the hospital in stable condition
Richmond, California (CNN) -- Investigators say as many as 20 people were
involved in or stood and watched the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside a
California high school homecoming dance Saturday night.
Police posted a $20,000 reward Tuesday for anyone who comes to them with
information that helps arrest and convict those involved in what authorities
describe as a 2˝-hour assault on the Richmond High School campus in suburban San
Francisco.
Two teenage suspects have been jailed, but more arrests, as many as 20 total,
are expected, according to a police detective.
"We will be making arrests continually as we develop probable cause," said
Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan. "With this number of people implicated in the
incident we're going to be making arrests on an ongoing basis."
As many as 10 people were involved in the assault in a dimly lighted back alley
at the school, while another 10 people watched without calling 911 to report it,
police said.
A 1999 California law makes it illegal not to report a witnessed crime against a
child, but the law applies only to children 14 and under.
"We do not have the ability to arrest people who witnessed the crime and did
nothing," Gagan said. "The law can be very rigid. We don't have the authority to
make an arrest."
Charles Ramsey, a member of the Richmond school board, said the school district
bears some responsibility for the attack. School administrators and police
apparently weren't watching the area as they should have, Ramsey said.
The school said it would hold a safety meeting for parents and students
Wednesday evening to address the assault.
The victim was found unconscious under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday,
after police received a call from someone in the area who had overheard people
at the assault scene "reminiscing about the incident," Richmond Police Lt. Mark
Gagan said.
The girl was flown by helicopter to a hospital where she was admitted in
critical condition. She was in stable condition Tuesday, police said.
Investigators canvassed the community with fliers, which included the reward
offer, hoping to identify more suspects Tuesday.
"There is one individual in custody who has made some spontaneous statements
that have led me to believe that he is culpable for what happened," Richmond
police Lt. Johan Simon said.
Nineteen-year- old Manuel Ortega, described as a former student at the school,
was arrested soon after he fled the scene and will face charges of rape, robbery
and kidnapping, police said.
A 15-year-old was later arrested and charged with one count of felony sexual
assault. A third teenager was being interviewed, Gagan said.
"Based on witness statements and suspect statements, and also physical evidence,
we know that she was raped by at least four suspects committing multiple sex
acts," Gagan said.
"As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see,
and some actually participated, " Gagan said.
The attack occurred on school grounds as the annual homecoming dance was under
way inside the school Saturday night, authorities said.

Did anyone see the season premier of “Family Guy”? (Sundays @9pm on Fox)

The storyline had baby Stewie (?sp) and Brian (the dog) traveling to alternate
dimension/universes.  The first one was a futuristic-type world.  They
explained that they were on Earth, and it was the same time as now, only
Christianity had never existed, and thus people had focused on reason, science,
and technology and as a result the human race was far more advanced than we are
now.
Amen!

nah i dont think so, even if there were black philosophers, they would be
trampled on and hidden, in

africa and the USA and probably South America, so i dont think there is any
"famous" philosopher

Well, i've never studied philosophy but even i can name a few!

Angela Davis
Bell Hooks
W.E.B. DuBois
Marcus Garvey
Cornel West

Someone also made this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Afr… also
specific to the United

States

Black Existential Philosophy

The first African-American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University earned
his degree in

sociology, however the work of W. E. B. Du Bois have been honored in the canon
of African American philosophy. W. E. B. Du Bois' notion of double
consciousness[1] has been revisited by many scholars as a notion doused in
existentialism. [2]

Cornel West has addressed the problem of Black Nihilism and its effect on the
African-American community.

The proper starting point for the crucial debate about the prospects for
black America is an examination of the nihilism that increasingly pervades black
communities. Nihilism is to be understood here not as a philosophic doctrine
that there are no rational grounds for legitimate standards or authority; it is,
far more, the lived experience of coping with a life of horrifying
meaninglessness, hopelessness, and (most important) lovelessness. The
frightening result is a numbing detachment from others and a self-destructive
disposition toward the world. Life without meaning, hope, and love breeds a
coldhearted, mean-spirited outlook that destroys both the individual and others.

D.C. Arts Program Picks Up the Pieces
Cost of Vandalism Estimated at $10,000

By Susan Kinzie - Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Volunteers scrubbed off the threat painted in red on the wall: "I will kill u n
5 4 3 2 1." They mopped floors, swept up broken glass and cleaned up sticky
puddles of peanut butter, mustard and urine, trying to restore order Tuesday at
a Northeast Washington nonprofit organization that was torn apart by vandals
over the weekend.
On Wednesday, 50 children are expected to return to the all-day summer program
run by Life Pieces to Masterpieces, which offers art, education and mentoring to
young boys in the community. Life Pieces to Masterpieces started in the
neighborhood around the Lincoln Heights housing complex almost 15 years ago. It
has helped hundreds of low-income African American youngsters create artwork
that tells about their lives.
On Monday morning, Andre Johnson and another volunteer arrived at the former
middle school building on Hayes Street NE to find the front door unlocked.
Inside, broken glass was everywhere, heavy desks had been overturned, papers and
food and art supplies strewed across the floor. He and others at Life Pieces
said that vandals had apparently used fire extinguishers to smash through doors,
sprayed the chemicals in the hallways, climbed over approximately 10-foot-high
walls to get into an office and classroom spaces, thrown paint, smashed
computers, stomped on the flat-screen TV and punched through a canvas of artwork
the boys had stitched together.
Johnson, a 17-year-old junior mentor, said his first thought was, "Wow. Life
Pieces is gone."
William Pitts, director of operations and programs, got a call on his way to
work and could not bear to go upstairs, where the program is centered. He cried
at the entrance downstairs for about 40 minutes, steeling himself for what he
would find. "But nothing prepared me for what I saw. . . . It's just unreal.
"I can't remember ever having that feeling before," he said. "Hurt, anger." And
amazement at the rage, evident in every smashed window, every stomp mark.
Nothing was stolen and little was left untouched. "That someone would have so
much anger to damage something that was doing so much good in the community --
that's what hurt me the most," Pitts said.
Pitts estimated that repairs will cost about $10,000. The organization has an
annual budget of about $650,000.
Workers at the program say they spent much of the morning crying but quickly
stopped asking why Life Pieces had been targeted. "It could be anyone,"
executive director and co-founder Mary Brown said. "We have no idea."
Police have not identified suspects and could not confirm how people entered the
building, which also houses the city's youth summer jobs program, said Robert
Contee, commander of the 6th District. He asked that anyone with information
call 888-919-CRIME.
"No sense trying to figure out insanity when you're sane," Pitts said, lifting
hands covered in red paint from the cleaning. If anything, he said, it shows how
great the need is for programs that mentor young people in neighborhoods without
much opportunity.
On Tuesday, volunteers from Georgetown and American universities, from other
community organizations and from the neighborhood came to the former Merritt
Middle School at 5002 Hayes St. NE to work or to drop off water and food.
By midafternoon, the broken windows had been boarded up, and someone had hung
paintings over the plywood. Maurice Kie pushed a buffer across a linoleum floor.
He started coming to the program when he was a child growing up in Lincoln
Heights public housing. "It was just a way to get out of the neighborhood," he
said.
Like Andre Johnson, who started coming to Life Pieces as a 6-year-old drawn to
the drumming sessions and the food, he said the program feels like family. Kie
is 23 now, studying education at the University of the District of Columbia.
"We've had setbacks before as an organization, and I've had setbacks in my
life," Kie said. "I know how you overcome. . . . We're still right here."

Good observation, Allen. Indeed, what is going on is that a cult-like sect of
muslims decided to wage war against everything western including western
education of any sort, and their targets are the regular muslims in the northern
part of the country. It so happens that those muslims that often pick fight
against the christians and formented islamic religious fundamentalists have now
become the target of even more fundamental fundamentalists.

So, the military and the police who are majority muslim in that part of the
country are the one leading the fight to flush out these brand of
fundamentalists. The human rights angle to the whole battle is that even when
these fundamentalists are captured alive, or put in police custody, their
captors summarily execute them in broad daylight. The police are still upset
that these supposedly illiterate fundamentalists organized themselves enough to
burn down scores of police stations, mosques and churches.

The muslim goverment of those states ordered the demolition of the mosques of
the fundamentalists, and fellow "regular" muslims cheered. I don't see this
getting any wider. It was not wise though for the President Yar Adua to board a
plane and head to Brazil while parts of his country was still smouldering.

About one out of every four Africans is Nigerian, if one believes that Nigeria's
population is 140 million and the continent's is 600 million. It may not be
exactly true that when Nigeria catches a fever, Africa catches influenza; that
saying may be true in the case of South Africa, four thousand miles to the
south. Nevertheless, what is happening in Nigeria is of tremendous significance
for the stability of the West African region and other parts of the continent
where there are significant Islamic populations. It appears at this stage that
what is happening in northern Nigeria is not religious strife in the classic
sense of the word, pitting one religion against another. We seem to have a
challenge to secularism as represented by the Abuja government. In fact, we
understand that economic grievances are a better explanation for the current

In fact, we
understand that economic grievances are a better explanation for the current
violence. One can only hope that other Islamic populations elsewhere in Africa
are not moved to get involved in this
crisis, otherwise we would have to brace up for a regional conflagration which
will inevitably lead to inter-religious strife. So far, the Nigerian government

Well, I heard the tape and I got the feeling she knew these guys were not white.
I also just read the police report and now I think the cop is lying. So,
I'll just have to go along with the original comment that we may never know what
really transpired.

The lady that called did nothing wrong. Further, they have released the 911 tape
and she never mentioned the race of the men she saw breaking in. When the
Dispatcher pressed her on that for description purposes, she said she thought
one looked Hispanic and she could not make out the other one. So, that lady
should be blameless. She did what every good citizen should do.

I actually never thought the officer was the racist one, but the lady who called
was..imo. The officer responding has to get closure when dealing with a report
like that, so asking for ID was no big deal. Gates took out his iritation on the
cop when it was the lady who called who should be the one to be upset with. I
personally don't blame the police THIS TIME.

We will probably never know exactly what transpired between Prof Gates and Sgt
Crowley. I suspect that the good professor was peeved when he realized that
Crowley had no idea who he was, despite the professor's high profile. After all,
who doesn't know Henry Gates? The reality is that most people, including the
police, simply are not paying attention to a whole lot of things going on around
them. They do not read anything, even their own bills!
I annoyed a few friends the other day when I suggested that since Gates was the
"big man" in the room, he should have done a better job of handling this
particular matter. If a Harvard professor cannot handle a situation like this

'Miscarriage of justice'
Gay man’s alleged killer faces just 180 days in jail after charge reduced

By LOU CHIBBARO JR, Washington Blade | Rebecca Armendariz | Jul 22, 12:13 PM

A grand jury for the D.C. Superior Court indicted Robert Lee Hannah on one count
of misdemeanor assault stemming from the September beating death of Tony
Randolph Hunter. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail.
(Photo courtesy of D.C. police)Gay activists in D.C. are demanding answers
following last week’s misdemeanor indictment of the man arrested in connection
with a gay man’s death.

A grand jury for D.C. Superior Court indicted Robert Lee Hannah on one count of
misdemeanor assault, which carries a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail,
stemming from the September beating death of Tony Randolph Hunter. Hannah was
arrested in October on a felony charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Benjamin Friedman, a spokesperson for the United States Attorney’s office,
which prosecutes most criminal cases in the city, said his office could not
comment on the case other than to note the grand jury decided on the simple
assault charge after it “reviewed the evidence and considered the appropriate
charges.”

But gay D.C. attorney Dale Edwin Sanders, who has practiced criminal law in the
city for more than 20 years, took strong exception to Friedman’s assessment.

“Make no mistake about whose decision it was,” Sanders said. “The grand
jury signed off on the decision made by the prosecutor.”

Activists say the action by the grand jury has exacerbated already strained
relations between gays and police and the U.S. Attorney’s office over the
case, which surfaced last fall.

D.C. police arrested Hannah, 18, in October in connection with the beating death
of Hunter, a gay Maryland resident. Hunter, 37, died Sept. 17, 10 days after
police said Hannah punched him several times on a Northwest Washington street,
causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

Hannah told police he punched Hunter only after Hunter touched his buttocks and
grabbed his crotch as the two men crossed paths near the corner of Eighth and N
streets, N.W.  Hannah also told police Hunter and a male friend who was with
him walked “crooked” and appeared to be drunk.

A police affidavit that recounts Hannah’s version of what happened also says
police interviewed a witness who claims to have known Hannah for a number of
years. According to the affidavit, the witness claimed to have seen Hunter
“touch” Hannah’s buttocks.

A friend of Hunter’s, who was with Hunter at the time of the incident, has
said Hannah and three or four other men punched him and Hunter as the two walked
from their car to a nearby gay bar, then known as BeBar. The bar, which still
caters to a gay clientele, has since been renamed EFN Lounge.

The friend, who has asked that his name be withheld, told police and the Blade
that the attack was unprovoked and that Hunter never made sexual advances toward
Hannah or anyone else.

“It’s totally untrue, totally untrue,” the friend said of Hannah’s claim
that Hunter made sexual advances.

Activists, led by Gays & Lesbians Opposing Violence, have said they are dismayed
that police and prosecutors appear to have given credence to Hannah’s claim
that he was the victim of Hunter’s alleged sexual proposition.

GLOV co-chair Chris Farris said Hannah’s claim of a sexual advance marked yet
another instance where someone who commits an anti-gay attack invoked the
so-called gay panic defense.

“The notion that a gay man walking in a dangerous neighborhood on his way to a
gay bar would walk up to a group of four men and grab one of them sexually is
not only a homophobic notion but also completely contradicted by the other
victim in this case,” Farris told the Blade in October.

In a statement issued after last week’s indictment, Farris said the
development “sends an alarming message” that violence against members of the
LGBT community is not given “equal weight” under the law.

“This is a very sad day for me personally,” he said. “I love my city, but
I am disgusted by the institutions that have let this conclusion come to
pass.”

Gay D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) also expressed disappointment at
the development.

“I am deeply disturbed by this result,” he said. “Maybe there is something
we don’t know. But if my knowledge of the facts is accurate, there has been a
major miscarriage of justice in the grand jury action.”

Sanders and gay D.C. attorney Calvin Steinmetz, who also has practiced criminal
law in the District, each said it’s widely believed in the legal profession
that grand juries follow the lead of prosecutors because prosecutors control the
evidence presented to grand juries and recommend the charges they believe grand
juries should hand down.

Sanders said the direction the prosecutors have taken in the case also indicates
they do not consider Hunter’s friend, who witnessed the assault, to be a
credible witness.

“It’s clear that they consider him to be defective, but we won’t know why
until all the facts are released,” Sanders said.

Friedman declined to say whether Hunter’s friend was called as a witness
before the grand jury. The friend did not return calls from the Blade seeking to
determine if he testified before the grand jury.

Sanders said he believes prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s office decided
they wanted the charge against Hannah lowered from involuntary manslaughter, for
which a Superior Court judge found probable cause, to a charge of misdemeanor
assault.

“The normal way for this result to be reached would have been for the
government to dismiss the felony and replace it with a new misdemeanor
charge,” Sanders said. “There can be little doubt that the prosecutor sought
political cover in this case from the foreseeable storm of community reaction to
the result — by being able to deflect responsibility to the grand jury.”

Friedman disputed Sanders’ assessment.

“We are required to put out evidence on both sides of a case,” he said.
“We are required to provide a balanced case before a grand jury. … For the
most part, a grand jury makes its decision based on the evidence we give them. I
don’t think it’s the case that the grand jury does what we want it to do.”

Police initially listed the Hunter case as a possible anti-gay hate crime
because of its location near a gay bar. The unidentified witness cited in the
police affidavit as saying he saw Hunter touch Hannah’s buttocks also told
police he believed Hunter and his friend were gay when he saw them walking
minutes before the assault, according to the affidavit.

Authorities also initially said the incident involved a robbery based on the
account by Hunter’s friend that Hannah and three or four other men stole
Hunter’s cell phone, car keys and an undetermined amount of cash.

But police later withdrew their classification of the incident as a “robbery
with force and violence” and a possible hate crime, saying subsequent
information obtained from witnesses prompted them to change the classification
to an altercation between two men — Hunter and Hannah — which
“escalated” into an assault.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier, at the time of Hannah’s arrest, said the
altercation led to an assault that resulted in Hunter hitting his head on the
street and dying of a brain injury.

Police homicide squad commander Inspector Rodney Parks said investigators
determined that Hannah never intended to kill Hunter, a conclusion that prompted
police to charge him with manslaughter rather than murder.

Gay activist Peter Rosenstein called on Mayor Adrian Fenty and members of the
Council to speak out more forcefully on the Hunter case.

“A gay man was killed and the community has to demand of our elected officials
that they ask the questions we need answered from police and the Justice
Department,” Rosenstein said. “How could this happen? What was the case
presented to the grand jury?

“How can a man die and his assailant basically be given a slap on the
wrist?”

Acting Lt. Brett Parson, a gay police official who oversees the D.C. police Gay
& Lesbian Liaison Unit, said he was hopeful that the community would understand
the reason behind the actions of police and the U.S. Attorney’s office in the
Hunter case when the full facts emerge after the case is heard in court.

“While I cannot comment on the specific facts or evidence in this case, I can
tell you the United States Attorney’s office, specifically the very senior and
experienced assigned assistant United States attorney, conducted an exhaustive
review and that I respect their decision,” Parson said.

Well, I wasn't surprised to see the exorcisms are taking place in an African
church over here. Those churches are one of the last vestiges of insanity in
this country.

You'll have a job persuading them that exorcism should stop, particularly when
some of these churches still believe in witches, and have disowned or killed
their own children and wives because of this.

The situation runs far deeper than a religious thing, and is really more a
cultural issue.

In the UK we (in the main) understand these extreme religious views to be the
preserve of Nigerian churches over here and in Nigeria. This is utterly a human
rights issue.

There's a bigger picture here!!

Exorcism of gays in the UK

Protest against abuse by fundamentalist Christians

London - 23 July 2009

Fundamentalist Christian churches in Britain are performing exorcisms on lesbian
and gay people in a bid to purge them of their homosexuality.

"The exorcism rituals involve the casting out of alleged demons and witches that
supposedly possess a gay person's soul and turn them away from heterosexuality,"
said LGBT human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell of OutRage!

"There are claims that gay teenagers and young adults are being subjected to
exorcisms at the insistence of their parents and pastors, in an attempt to rid
them of same-sex attraction.

"The exorcisms can include traumatic emotional scenes where the victims are
surrounded by a group of church elders who scream at them to drive out the evil
spirits and who sometimes shake their bodies.

"When this is done to youngsters under 18, it is a form of child abuse and the
police should intervene to stop it

"Some gay adults have been pressured into exorcisms by their family members or
faith communities. Other victims are people with learning difficulties or mental
health problems. They have been preyed upon when they are in a vulnerable state
and are not capable of giving fully informed consent.

"There needs to be a thorough police investigation of all the churches that are
doing these exorcisms," said Mr Tatchell.

One London church admits it does exorcisms on four or five gay people every
year. This church, United Pentecostal Ministry in Harrow north London, was
exposed by The Metro newspaper late last month:

http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?Homosexuals_left_traumatised_by_ceremon\
ial_cure&in_article_id=692445&in_page_id=34

The church pastor, Rev John Ogbe-Ogbeide, said he did the ritual to cast out the
demons and evil spirits that he believes are responsible for homosexuality.
Sometimes people were calm during the process but sometimes their body
convulsed, he conceded.

Exorcisms can be performed on gay children or on those who are suspected to be
gay. There is no minimum age for the exorcism ceremony because a demon could
possess a person at any age in life and could incline them to "wrong" sexual
thoughts and behaviour, said Rev Ogbe-Ogbeide.

"United Pentecostal Ministry says it performs four or five exorcisms on gay
people each year. It is just one of hundreds of fundamentalist churches in
Britain. Gay exorcisms are likely to be performed in many of them. It is
possible that dozens or even hundreds of LGBT people could be subjected to
exorcism abuse in the UK. Because it takes place behind closed church doors and
is kept secret, it is impossible to give an accurate assessment of the numbers
involved," added Mr Tatchell.

What you can do:

1) Protest to Rev John Ogbe-Ogbeide

United Pentecostal Ministry
8 Angel Road
Harrow HA1 1Jy
Tel 07957106465
johnogbeuniperm@...

Calm, compassionate, rational arguments are likely to be more effective than a
rant.

2) Ask your MP to press the police to investigate this church and other churches
who perform exorcisms on gay people, in order to check that criminal acts of
assault and homophobic abuse are not taking place. Cite the Metro letter below
as evidence.

3) Report Rev John Ogbe-Ogbeide to your local police. Ask them to commence a
criminal investigation to determine if the law is being broken. Give them a copy
of the Metro article that follows as evidence.

4) Report what responses you get to the LGBT press and to the local paper.

Thank you, Peter Tatchell, OutRage!

Homosexuals left traumatised by ceremonial 'cure'

Metro

25 June 2009

http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?Homosexuals_left_traumatised_by_ceremon\
ial_cure&in_article_id=692445&in_page_id=34

Gay exorcisms are regularly being performed in Christian churches in Britain, it
has emerged.

The ceremony is being carried out to rid worshippers of the supposed demons
which make them homosexual.

The pastor of one Pentecostal church in north-west London said he held four or
five exorcisms a year and claimed they always worked.

However, gay campaigners said the 20-minute ritual often traumatised those on
whom it was carried out.

Details of the practice emerged after a video of the exorcism of a 16-year-old
American boy was posted on YouTube.

The footage was taken down amid calls for the church leaders involved to be
prosecuted.

Here, the Rev John Ogbe-Ogbeide, who runs the United Pentecostal Ministry in
Harrow, said he carried out the ritual to cast out evil spirits that were
responsible for homosexuality.

He added: 'The evil spirits are telling you what's wrong is right, the opposite
sex is not attractive.'

There was no minimum age for the ceremony because a demon could take hold at any
point in life, said Mr Ogbe-Ogbeide.

Sometimes people were calm during the process but sometimes their body
convulsed.

'There are some who speak but we know this is the demon. The demon can speak
through anybody,' he added.

Mr Ogbe-Ogbeide last performed the ritual in January to help a young man, who
was planning to marry his girlfriend but said he was also in love with another
man.

He added: 'He said if it carried on it would upset their plans to have kids and
he wanted to live in matrimony.'

But the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement said it was frequently contacted by
people left traumatised by the experience.

Chief executive the Rev Sharon Ferguson, said 'a lot of fundamentalist groups
believe homosexuality can be cured'.

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said he had heard of exorcisms on
children, which was child abuse 'pure and simple'.

He added: 'Some adults who have been pressured into exorcisms have been preyed
upon when they're in a vulnerable state and not really able give fully informed
consent.

'They're maybe people with learning difficulties or mental health problems.
There needs to be a thorough investigation of all the churches who are doing
these exorcisms.'

In March, it was revealed that a fifth of therapists, many in the pay of the
NHS, had attempted to 'cure' patients of homosexuality.
