Hi Barb,
I know that a lot of people simply do not understand the physiology
and have the use of the bit ingrained into their heads often without
even knowing how it works. But I am surprised at your mention of how
groups of people will alienate others to protect themselves from
change.
This (BB) isn't some fad. The bad effects of the bit have been
studied independently the world over. Crashes that happen are usually
with a bit. I don't mean to say that is the sole reason for it, but
the bit certainly will not stop the horse, due to whatever reason it
decides to 'make a run for it'.
Change is coming, whether people accept it or not. The younger
generation seems to have no problem going bitless.
In view of the scientific studies regarding the bit, and also how it
can often increase danger in an already bad situation, (causing more
pain/unwanted reaction when the horse is already stressed), insurance
companies like the idea of charging more to schools and horse owners
who use the bit.
Awareness and education is the key. Announce all you want to others.
The true skeptics are the ones who have never tried the BB or even
seen one. Anyone who has the slightest interest or even curiosity
should have the chance to be informed.
