I may be relocating to Albuquerque with my 80 something parents, husband and 3.5-year-old daughter – from Berkeley, California (a very bike friendly area)....
Hmmm. Thinking of organic grocers narrows the search down quickly. That criterium singles out the area around Matthew and Rio Grande (La Montanita Co-op), Nob...
Welcome to the Land of Enchantment, maybe. Sounds like you'll want to be in the University area--the area around University of New Mexico. Housing is cheaper...
hmmm, thats a tall order! Albuquerque has great teachers with poor schools, lots of environmentally active people who drive everywhere, and little locally...
The north valley area is getting nicer and nicer. The bike path that runs along the river is nearby as is the La Montanita Co-op grocery and Griegos...
You want a local organic food store--the Coop is the thing. I don't think that it is at all overpriced for what it provides. Neighborhoods that are the best...
... The area south of the university is where many of the undergrads live, so don't expect it to be quiet. I would avoid the area to the immediate West of the...

Strange the replies you are getting. I had never heard that the area just west of the university is crime-ridden--perhaps in the student apartment...
Have you seen today's "Letters to the Editor" in the Albuquerque Journal? On page A-9, Pete Vera writes: "I don't agree with bicyclists having the same right...
Ben and all, I had fun with this. On top of this, if Mr. Vera is willing to support $8M in bikeways across metro Albuquerque, there are many cyclists who would...
Wow, John, that was great! Thanks to you and everyone else who has written in (I encourage others to post their responses as well). If you haven't written...
I just got a call from Harry Moskos at ABQ Journal. Apparently there were enough cyclists who responded to the letter yesterday that they'll publish the...
Hey Ben, Thanks for the heads up. Here is my petty little snark. Oh yeah, supposedly in tomorrow's (Thursday) Go section of the Journal, there is an article on...
I replied heavily based on some of your concepts and ideas in your posting. Thanks for getting the RideABQ group rallied about this. I also received a call...
My own personal take on folks like Mr. Vera as well as the folks that have expressed their road rage at me is that they are unhappy because we get to ride and...
I know that there used to be a local group that would fix up bicycles and give them away I just can't find the contact info. Al Watters New Frontiers...

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say that I am going to send Mr. Vera a copy of that article I found online. Maybe he'll respond to a little education... Ben Savoca...
Great reply John! You said it all succinctly and well! Thanks. John Hooker <hookerx2@...> wrote: Ben and all, I had fun with this. On top of this, if Mr....
Just another 2 cents worth here. I don't know about you folks, but I have been riding in Albuquerque for 34 years. I have never seen the numbers of bicycles...
Erik, Based on your experience, would it help if the curb lanes were just widened a foot? The inside lanes on Lomas or San Mateo could be narrowed slightly (6"...
I think that would be a great idea. The junction between the roadway and the gutter would need to be fine-tuned to avoid those cracks that love to grab...

To all, AASHTO (The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) usually sets the design standards for all highway and bike facilities....
The only way to make any difference would be to widen the bike path-- to the right--by a foot. If the car lane were narrowed, you have made it so only...
Dan, I'm not familiar with any "raised bike lanes" in the City. If you have encountered this condition, it was most probably the result of poor paving quality...
I usually try to avoid Lomas and San Mateo. If I do use them, I sometimes dodge through parking lots. I have faced the fact that there are some streets that...
Lets not forget that asphalt moves around a lot in our hot climate and forms these things on its own. Its just something one has to deal with. For me, the...
I agree that all bicyclists who treasure their sanity need to avoid busy arterials that don't have bike lanes...San Mateo and Lomas to name just a few. I'd...
Roland, I guess I should clarify: I've never seen raised bike lanes in ABQ, but I had read somewhere that they may be coming. I *thought* that it was in the ...

I live very near the intersection of Lomas and San Mateo so have to contend with these streets perhaps more than others on this Group. I avoid them entirely....
