Check out the Open bike design:

The program apparently uses integrated GPS and card swipe on the bike and does not require complex distirbution stands:

The bike itself looks like something I had been discussing with Matthew Grimm a couple of years ago.  Hope he's still moving ahead with the project of a "people's bike."

Hi, Folks--

Just letting you know that we're in the last three days of Bicycle Fixation's Free US Shipping Sale for any order over $50. (Ends around 11pm on December 15th.) Though we're nearly cleaned out of knickers, we do have Four Season Jerseys, Town & Country Shorts, and James Black hats in good supply.

Looks like an earlier and colder than usual winter coming on, so you year-round commuters might want to order your Four sEason Jerseys, our 100% merino baselayer with integrated balaclava that converts to a normal hood, right now, while the Post office truck can still get through the snow!

Check out what we've got at:

Thanks!

A nice clip from an older BBC article on cycling in Bristol, though the story's mostly about Groningen in Holland.

In the late 1970s Groningen was much like Bristol is now, with cars ruling the road and cyclists condemned to the gutter.

But then the city set about a radical transformation, investing a similar amount of money to Bristol.

They ripped up some of the roads and built a network of largely traffic-free cycle lanes.

In the centre of the city, cars were removed altogether and replaced with a relaxed space for bicycles and pedestrians.

A specially designed bike park was created at the railway station with 5,000 bike racks.

At first there was resistance from some local businesses who were concerned about restraining motorists but now there is a clamour for the "cyclisation" to go even further.

Ties in to many recent discussions.

When I attempted just now to post a notice of my new article in the
Los Angeles Business Journal to Bicycle Fixation's nascent Facebook
page, I was slapped with a window claiming that the "content in [my]
post was offensive to Facebook users," and that I could not post there.

Well, it's within Facebook's rights to censor what is said in its
private space, and it's within my rights not to use that space--
presented as a sort of forum, after all--under those conditions. So I
have deleted the Bicycle Fixation Facebook page.

Our Twitter ( http://twitter.com/bicyclefixation ) account is still
open, of course, and going well, with hundreds of followers, and
there is still the blog, as well as the announcement list ( http://
groups.yahoo.com/group/bicycle-fixation-announce/ ) hosted by
Yahoogroups. So you still have plenty of ways to keep up with Bicycle
Fixation news!

Meanwhile, here's the notice that caused the problem: the Los Angeles
Business Journal has published another editorial of mine, this one on
the economics of bicycle infrastructure in general, and in particular
on the benefits of a "bicycle boulevard" treatment of a section of
4th Street here in LA. To read it, go to:

One last reminder that Bicycle Fixation is shipping any order over $50 for FREE to any US Zip code until December 15th.

Although we're almost sold out of Knickers, we still have good stock in some sizes; we have Town & Country Shorts at a discounted price; and we have a very good stock (for now) of Four Season Jerseys in both charcoal and the popular burnt orange. James Black Hats in size Large should be in on Monday and on the site by Tuesday, in time for free shipping if bought with something else.

Knicker socks and Kookaburra Wash are in stock as well.

We ship all orders via USPS Priority Mail, so no address is excluded, most orders arrive within 1 to 3 days, and Alaska and Hawaii are included in the deal.

Again, free US shipping till December 15th from Bicycle Fixation!

We have two new uploads to offer you today, an article and a product review.

First up, we present what you might call the "director's cut" of the article on cycling in Los Angeles, written at the request of Momentum Planet and published there last month. Momentum being a print publication, they had to cut it severely, but they graciously gave us the go-ahead to publish the full version online. So here it is:

And we had the chance to road-test a couple of cycling caps from Spokepunchers, who offer not only stock and custom designs or their own, but will print your designs onto Pace brand cycling caps.  Check them out:

Just a reminder that Bicycle Fixation is shipping all US orders over $50 for free until December 15th--any state in the union, contiguous or not, and for that matter APO/FPO addresses, and I guess anyplace else that has a ZIP code.

While our inventory's a little thin in knickers, we still have lots in the popular size 32, socks are in, hats will be in within days, and--most important--the Four Season Jersey is in stock in all sizes, with plenty of Mediums, Larges, and Extra Larges. 100% merino wool, imported by us from New Zealand, sewn right here in LA, integrated balaclava, handsome styling.

Winter's coming, and we won't make Four Season Jerseys again till next year, so get 'em while you can:

Free US shipping on most stuff till December 15th, and plenty of Four Season Jerseys in stock...for now.

For the rest of the stuff:

Commercial Plug Alert!

Well, we finally grabbed our folding dolly and hopped on the downtown
bus to pick up the Four Season Jersey/Ninja Road Warrior Hoodie order
at the factory. (And we really do have to get a bike trailer!)

So they're here, they're beautiful, and they're in limited supply--
these are not easy to sew, and we have to import the 100% merino wool
ourselves from New Zealand, so this batch will be all we've got till
next year.

We've made a couple of small changes: a slightly longer sleeve, for
better wrist coverage when riding, a slightly shorter tail, for
better off-bike aesthetics (without compromising coverage in back).
The same eminently-comfortable merino rib, the same elegant charcoal
and visible yet never garish burnt orange colors. Made to fit
closely, so if you're a big or tall medium go for a large, etc. Slim
folks of average height, get your t-shirt size.

Good top for any season (hence the name): by itself in warm weather,
over a light t-shirt in spring or fall, or as a base layer for deep
winter riding (or skiing). Zips up to your eyeballs for when the snow
flies, and has a double-layer neck! Yet the hood buttons back for
more moderate chill, and drapes nicely down the back if you don't
need it at all. Many customers report having worn theirs during some
part of the day for the entire year since they got it!

Get them while you can at Bicycle Fixation:
http://bicyclefixation.com/prod_4seasonjersey.html

And US shipping is free till December 15th!

Thanks,

Rick

Dear All:

I met with a fellow yesterday who is working on a number of projects
related to elementary school transportation in Metro Vancouver, BC,
Canada. One program aims to promote the use of sustainable
transportation options amongst elementary school students by
encouraging them to come up with their own solutions and supporting
these accordingly. Another involves convening stakeholder groups
from municipalities and school communities to come up with
comprehensive school transportation strategies. Omar Bhimji, the
Project Manager of the Hub for Action on School Transportation
Emissions, is seeking a researcher to study the efficacy of the
various approaches contained within the programs. Through a
partnership with the Columbia Institute and the MITACS Accelerate
program he has $15,000 in funding available to grant the
researcher. This sounded like the perfect project for a Masters
level student interested in sustainable transportation-- a concrete
issue, association with an established organization, and
funding. The researcher/student would be actively involved in
designing and implementing the study from start to finish.

Here is Omar's contact information:

Yup, time for a holiday promo!

Bicycle Fixation is offering free US shipping for any order over $50 till December 15th.

That means the sale will still be going when the Four Season Jerseys/ Ninja Road Warrior Hoodies show up in a few days!

Applies to everything, wool, hemp, whatever.

James Black Hats in size L will be in soon too. (But a hat by itself is not enough to trigger the promo.)

No code needed; if you're shipping to a US address, that's enough.

Cheers,

Rick

Portland moves ahead again in its innovative program that combines stormwater catchments with traffic calming. pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure:

With car droppings a big part of stormwater pollutants, and a mandate to clean up the Willammette River, Portland built deep planters at strategic points, filled with native plantings that hold the water so it can soak back into the ground before it hits the streets. Then they integrated these with pedestrian architecture such as bulbouts that reduce street crossing distances, and worked bike lanes and bike boxes in the picture as well.

They went far beyond the usual catch and mechanically clean attitude to integrate stormwater treatment with the underlying ecology of the region, and beautify neighborhoods while opening up transport options.

Beautiful example of not "complete thinking"!

This Federal Transit Document proposes changing guidelines in order
to increase the funding allocated to pedestrian and bicycle
infrastructure that serves the catchment area of a bus or train stop,
and posits that the present definition of "catchment area" should be
expanded.

This would definitely be a way to get more money for effective bike &
ped facilities, and we should all read this closely.

Some quotes:

> The success of public transportation can be limited by the problem
> of the "first and last mile.’’ One of ‘‘the best present options
> for solving the first and last mile dilemma are ... bicycles.
(Andrea White-Kjoss)

> Whether used for longer trips to access amenities outside the
> walkable radius of a public transportation station, or whether they
> enable direct access to a public transportation facility, bicycle
> amenities play an important role in encouraging public
> transportation use by providing riders with greater opportunities,
> choice, flexibility and safety for reaching their final destinations.

> a bike-on-bus demonstration program in Phoenix, Arizona that led to
> over 1,400 new public transportation riders per month.

And perhaps most important in terms of actually getting
infrastructure put in:
> Studies suggest that developments that incorporate bicycling and
> walking infrastructure in proximity with public transportation can
> reduce fiscal outlays of local municipalities towards roads and
> other infrastructure expansion by twenty-five percent.
(TCRP Report 102: Transit-Oriented Development in the United States:

"Many inside the organisation believe that maintaining oil supplies at even 90m to 95m barrels a day would be impossible but there are fears that panic could spread on the financial markets if the figures were brought down further. And the Americans fear the end of oil supremacy because it would threaten their power over access to oil resources," he added.

A second senior IEA source, who has now left but was also unwilling to give his name, said a key rule at the organisation was that it was "imperative not to anger the Americans" but the fact was that there was not as much oil in the world as had been admitted. "We have [already] entered the 'peak oil' zone. I think that the situation is really bad," he added.

Okay, lots of folks want the Portland Steel Bridge T-shirt in black or dark gray, but to do that design without a border requires a special printer.  I have set up the design in our Cafepress account, and I have ordered a shirt myself to check out their work.

The shirt is excellent--an organic cotton American Apparel shirt--and the design comes across well.  Unfortunately, it costs quite a bit more than the T-shirts we sell directly from the Bicycle Fixation website.

However, if you want black--and it does look nice--it's available now.

We are working on a variant design that will work with the printers we do have, but it will be different.

Check it out, and let me know what you think if you order one.
