Hi Better Bayview-ers.

A couple of months ago we reached out about a Fence Project on the 1600 Block of Palou. We were raising money to rebuild a dilapidated fence on our block. A few Better Bayview-ers generously contributed along with a number of neighbors on our block and a business around the corner on 3RD—and we're very grateful.

Well, we're making great progress on the project and we're just $280.85 shy of covering the costs. Wanted to put out one last plea for donations.

Here's a progress report on the project that your donation will help complete:

:: The empty lot's dilapidated fence, that according to long-time residents on our block has been in various states of disrepair for decades, has been removed and the debris has been hauled away.

:: The fence has been rebuilt by a few neighbors on our block who volunteered their time and professional skills to rebuild the fence.

:: The new fence has been sanded and stained by a couple of other neighbors who volunteered their time.

:: The materials were procured from the Bayview Lowe's and a resident of our block generously allowed us to tap into her employee discount.

:: Now we're working on the typographic mural that will jazz up the new fence, slowly but surely, letter by letter. See the attched image for an initial peek.

In the spirit of a "Better Bayview" won't you consider making a donation? We're just $280.85 shy of covering the costs. In exchange for your contribution to The Fence Project, you’ll get:

:: 3RD STREET loot! The 3RD STREET t-shirts originally created as part of the "KEEP IT 3RD" campaign that Chris started shortly after the announcement a few years ago that Third was potentially going to be re-named. The t-shirts are available in Men’s L and XL and Women’s XL.

:: More 3RD STREET loot! The 3RD STREET bumper stickers are a great addition to your bumper, bag, or bulletin board. KEEP IT 3RD!

:: A tasty jar of "Palou Preserves" made by a Better Bayview-ew (who already contributed to the Fence Project, thanks Earl) with plums from our backyard.

:: 3 fresh, tart lemons from our Palou Avenue backyard lemon tree

To contribute to The Fence Project and receive your various loot please visit:
http://www.sarahstangle.com/fenceproject.html

$5 : 1 3RD ST Bumper Sticker

$20 : 1 3RD ST T-Shirt

$25 : 1 3RD ST T-Shirt + 2 3RD ST Bumper Stickers

$30 : 1 3RD ST T-Shirt + 2 3RD ST Bumper Stickers + 1 jar of Palou Preserves

$60 : 2 3RD ST T-Shirts + 4 3RD ST Bumper Stickers + 1 jar of Palou Preserves + 3 fresh lemons from our Palou Avenue backyard lemon tree

100% of your contribution goes towards rebuilding the fence and making the Bayview better. In the event that we have money in excess of the cost of the materials, that excess would go directly to the 3 kind neighbors that dismantled the old fence and actually built the new one.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Sarah Stangle + Chris Buck
1657 Palou Avenue

WHAT a great evening! Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Big kudos to Kristin
and Matt for hosting and for an extraordinary Cajun menu, to Matt's mom for
amazing gumbo, and EARL! for peach cobbler! We raised nearly 200 bucks which
will go toward feeding volunteers during our Every Saturday Volunteer Days.

Subject: San Francisco's OneBayArea Grant Program

Introducing San Francisco's OneBayArea Grant Program
Images of various types of fundable projects
On May 17, 2012, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) adopted the OneBayArea Grant Program (OBAG), which will direct an estimated $38.8 million in federal transportation funds to San Francisco over the next four years. The San Francisco County Transportation Authority (Authority) will decide which projects in San Francisco should receive OBAG funds.

What kinds of projects can be funded?

  • Local Streets and Roads Preservation (e.g. street resurfacing)
  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements (e.g. new bike lanes, wider sidewalks)
  • Transportation for Livable Communities (e.g. streetscape projects with pedestrian/bike/transit improvements, and transit station improvements)
  • Safe Routes to School (e.g. pedestrian crossing improvements, outreach focused on encouraging safe walk/bike access to schools)

Who can apply for funds?

Public agencies eligible to receive federal transportation funds.

Which projects are most likely to be funded?

MTC requires that at least 70% (about $25 million) of San Francisco’s OBAG funds be given to projects located in Priority Development Areas in order to support location of new jobs and housing near transit. (Download a PDF map of San Francisco's PDAs.)
The Authority will also consider other factors when choosing which projects to fund, such as:
  • Benefits to multiple system users (e.g. pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders)
  • Project readiness (e.g. What is the status of the project’s environmental approvals?  Is there documented public support?)
  • Geographic equity

Schedule

Introducing San Francisco's OneBayArea Grant Program

How can I get involved?

  • Ask questions about the OBAG program or provide comments on the project selection process at obag@... or 415.593.1655.
  • Share project ideas with potential project sponsors (contact information on our website).
  • Attend Authority Board and Committee meetings.

2012 SUPERHERO Award Recipients!

1. Cultural Inspiration – THRASHER MAGAZINE
Thrasher is a monthly skateboarding magazine born in San Francisco in 1981 and proudly kicking and screaming ever since. Thrasher has got a pretty solid claim on being the most important magazine in the history of skateboarding. Brash, anarchic and shit-talking in the best possible way, Thrasher the mag has been moulded in the image of Thrasher the man – its legendarily bolshy, sweary, speccy editor Jake Phelps. With his tireless skate-rat enthusiasm, stubborn refusal to bow to corporate pressure and bottomless knowledge of the scene, the San Francisco veteran is one of the great living authorities on skateboarding. Thrasher was founded by by Kevin Thatcher, Eric Swenson, and Fausto Vitello.

2. Artist – MICHAEL CHRISTIAN
Michael Christian is a celebrated sculptor and artist who specializes in large-scale metal installations. His work has appeared all across the West Coast, Europe, and Canada and in locations as diverse as San Francisco, Toronto, Portugal, and Spain. He’s contributed sculptures for musical artists such as Phish and String Cheese Theory as well as displays for the Coachella Music Festival six years in a row. You’ve seen his work if you’ve been to Burning Man.

3. Environmental Action – Building Resources
Building Resources accepts donations of reusable items, typically sturdy home items that people have gotten rid of during remodels, and sells them to people who want to reuse them. By doing this, Building Resources diverts about 1,000 tons of materials from landfills each year.
One of the coolest offerings is tumbled glass. Old broken windows, mirrors, vases, dishes, and pots are tumbled in cement mixers and become smooth and pretty little pieces that can be used for landscaping, flower arrangements, and art projects.

4. Social Awareness – Friends of Islais Creek
The Friends of Islais Creek was founded by Julia Viera in 1986. Her vision was to work with the community to create a master plan for the creek, submit it to the Port of San Francisco and BCDC for review, and present it to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to adopt as the official plan. Thanks to a grant from the state’s Water Resources Board all of that happened. The Islais Creek Master Plan was designed and adopted. Then, as a first step in implementing the master plan, Julia got a grant from the state’s Coastal Conservancy to create the little park at Islais Landing.
Julia was very involved with Bayview and waterfront issues and eventually worked in Supervisor Sophie Maxwell’s office. She and friends in the Bayview tried to organize the community and improve conditions. They created the Bayview Area Neighborhood Coalition, mostly Bayview mothers, who wanted to put young people to work and reduce the crime rate. We thank the Friends of Islais Creek for their efforts, many of which we are all enjoying today.

5. Community Creation – SCRAP
SCRAP is a non-profit creative reuse center, materials depot, and workshop space founded in 1976 in San Francisco, California. and breathes new life into old objects and reduces waste by diverting over 200 tons of materials heading to landfill every year.
Donations of quality re-usable materials such as textiles, buttons, paper, craft and office supplies, plastics, and wood are collected from businesses, institutions, and individuals then sorted and made available to teachers, parents, artists, and organizations.
The community depends on SCRAP as the place to find all manner of materials for educational programs, creative projects, and their classrooms. By offering low cost supplies, creative reuse workshops, volunteer opportunities, educational field trips, art exhibitions, and more SCRAP gives students of all ages the opportunity to learn and pass on the value of creative reuse.

Hi ya'll~
We are having a community guest chef BBQ and mural dedication today at All Good Pizza from 12-4 pm.
We just hung our new mural created by local artist Cameron Moberg depicting the Bayview in the 60's- come check it out!
Bayview's Dre Ned will be working the smoker- $10 plate lunch includes grilled chicken, hot links, potato salad, tri-mixed baked beans and garlic bread.
We also have $4 ice cream sandwiches with organic Straus ice cream and 100% of sales will be donated to Crossroads Youth Center, where Cameron volunteers.
Hope to see you!
Matt and Kristin

Hi all,
Our dog got out last night and has been missing since.  She is a brindle colored boxer pit mix, about 60 lbs with a bright orange collar.  She is chipped, but unfortunately she was not wearing her tag.
I have attached a few pics.  We live right by Youngblood Coleman Park on Hudson.  Please let us know if you have seen her!
Many thanks,
Kristin and Matt

Hi all,
We are so thrilled to report that Lalo is home safely!
Thank you so much to everyone who called, wrote, looked, posted signs, etc.- we feel so blessed to be a part of this amazing tight knit community.
And a very special thank you to Michelle, our neighbor at the corner, for taking care of Lalo and to Patti, for recognizing her.
We are beyond thrilled and can't wait to pick the boys up from school, who will be so relieved that their dog is home.
With much love and gratitude,
Kristin, Matt, Hudson and Rowan

Super glad you found Lalo - being a dog owner, myself, I know how traumatic that must have been!

Subject: The new "No Tall Vehicles" Ordinance is poorly thought out.

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/RV-parking-faces-limits-in-some-spots-3895\
051.php

I'm not against RV dwellers on principle, however I see everyday the many
downsides to the "rolling homeless" camps bring to our fair city. But I'm
against this new ordinance. Here's why:

There are already City ordinances against dwelling in vehicles. Passing new laws
isn't going to make these people change, only active enforcement can do that.
They'll just move their rolling shelters somewhere else. The only persons left
dealing with the "no tall vehicles" tickets will be City homeowners and working
people who drive tall vehicles.

This ordinance broadly targets "vehicles over 7 feet high". I live one door from
Innes Avenue, which is mentioned in the Chronicle article. We own our home here.
My van is 8 feet high. It's clean, legally registered, properly insured and can
fit in parking spaces marked "compact". Several of my friends drive similar vans
or campers that exceed 7 feet high. While we do not live in our vehicles, they
do get parked around the City just like any other car. The idea of giving
Parking Enforcement a way to cite my van based on it's height alone is of major
concern, since their citation appeal process is generally a sham.

Our City Supervisors voted for this law without proper studies or resident
input. According to the attached article, Malia Cohen voted for it, saying that
she was tired of Bayview being a dumping ground.

Malia, if you read this, I would ask whether providing HP-Bayview residents some
logical alternatives to dumping garbage on street corners might go a LOT farther
towards that goal than a vague "no tall vehicles" ordinance does.

Lastly, many homeless persons in SF live in vehicles that are not over 7 feet
tall. So is this law really about vehicle dwellers, or is it really a campaign
against larger vehicles?

Thanks for listening.

Dustin, I have some recycled redwood lumber you can have if you need it for your
planter box. Not enough probably to do it all but its a start. They should have
more very affordably over at Builder's Resource.
