I noticed many neighbors have received spray paint dots on the
sidewalks from the city. The dots represent the sidewalk squares the
city wants the home or business owner to fix. (Some flaws are
ridiculously small.)

While I applaud maintained sidewalks, I laugh to think they are
asking people to fix sidewalks on DPW streets where DPW trees made
the sidewalk heave. Who handed this man a can of spray paint without
a map of DPW streets?

Now to take advantage of this opportunity. How can we encourage the
city and the property owners to remove the sidewalk, enlarge the tree
basins, and diminish the concrete, by adding sidewalk planting beds?

It's good for property values, a sense well being, and storm run off.
Anyone have sway with the powers that be?

Matt

Jed/Micah,
Can you send this out to the CAC and PAC email lists.  This is a Model Block MTA hearing at City Hall on September 19th, at 10:00 am #416 for changing the parking on Newcomb to allow the improved streetscape that the residents worked to develop to be installed.

It would be great if PAC and CAC members could attend and show their support from the community for this project to the MTA hearing officer.  Thanks!

Best regards,
Thor

Islais Creek is currently surrounded by primarily heavy industrial and active maritime uses that provide economic development opportunities for the community. Generally the area has not had a coordinated citywide interagency planning effort but rather has been studied and analyzed by various agencies and neighborhood groups as a peripheral area or on the margins of several significant planning efforts. Join Sara Jensen, recipient of the 2008 Piero N. Patri Fellowship in Urban Design, for her presentation of a community improvement concept plan for the Islais Creek area.

ART 94124 GALLERY welcomes artists from the non-profit San Francisco glass school Public Glass. This group exhibition, Heat & Light, highlights photograms from Bayview photographer Ron Moultrie Saunders alongside glass objects from Public Glass artists.

Public Glass is a studio and school formed to meet the needs of Bay Area artists working in glass and students interested in learning the medium. For over ten years, Public Glass has been a destination for students and artists from around the world seeking to learn and practice the art of glassmaking. Located in San Francisco?s Bayview District, Public Glass has over 7,000 square feet of studio space devoted to fusing, casting, sculpting and blowing glass, as well as a gallery space in which studio artists and glass students can exhibit their work.

Public Glass Studio Artists Exhibiting in Heat & Light:

Renee Anderson
Kristina Barnes
Katherin Bellevin
Dean Bensen & Demetra Theofanus, Truck Dog Glass
Herb Dang
Anne Hughes & Krista Lohr, LACY glass
Susanne Jette Khawand
Michelle Knox
Jess Wainer
Jason Wertheimer

Photograms by Ron Moultrie Saunders

Featured alongside the glass offerings are camera-less photographs, or photograms, by San Francisco artist Ron Moultrie Saunders. The photogram is a 19th Century artform involving direct exposure of a photographic subject onto the photo paper without the use of a camera.

In Heat & Light, Saunders layers plant material onto the surface of silver-based photographic paper. The paper is then exposed to light emitted from an enlarger to create a shadowy silhouette image. The resultant photogram is an almost ghostly image of a botanical subject, akin to an X-Ray, with each detail of the plant material defined by light.

Heat & Light is the first collaborative effort by two Bayview arts organizations, Public Glass and ART 94124. Both organizations share a common goal to inspire, strengthen, and unify the community through art. To learn more, visit Public Glass?s website at www.publicglass.org, and ART 94124?s website at www.ART94124.com.

Hi all,

Mark Ripperda from the EPA was nice enough to upload the Draft Amended Record of Decision (ROD) for Parcel B of the Shipyard to his own website, so we can check it out online:

Parcel B is the northernmost segement of the Shipyard, next to India Basin. It is expected to be transferred to the City through an early transfer process, possibly as early as next Spring.

The ROD outlines what has been done and still needs to be done to complete the environmental remediation of Parcel B. There will be a ROD for each parcel - another one is out now for Parcel G, the area where a football stadium might be built, and one is out for Parcel D-2, a strip of land at the top of the hill next to the former Parcel A. Unfortunately neither of those are available online. We have been asking the Navy to make their documents available online and hopefully sometime soon they will do so.

In the Parcel B ROD, Attachment C shows the Navy's response topublic comments, some submitted by the India Basin Neighborhood Association, and some other good ones from the City with respect to IR-18 and IR-07, the areas immediately adjacent to India Basin.

If you have questions on the Parcel B ROD, you can bring them to a CAC-sponsored meeting tonight, Wednesday 9/17, at the Windows on the Shipyard (ARC Ecology) offices on Third @ Newcomb, 5:30pm-8pm.

All the documents on Shipyard cleanup are available in hard copy at the Bayview Anna Waden Library and the SF Main Library (100 Larkin), and at the Windows on the Shipyard/ARC Ecology offices. ARC Ecology will also make a CD for you if you bring one in.

Thanks
Kristine

Subject: Imagining Islais Creek: September 23rd

On September 23rd, Sara Jensen, recipient of the 2008 Piero N. Patri
Fellowship in Urban Design, will present a community improvement concept
plan for the Islais Creek area.

Islais Creek generally defines the boundary and serves as a "Gateway" to both
the Bayview and Central Waterfront communities. It is currently surrounded by
primarily heavy industrial and active maritime uses that provide economic
development opportunities for the community. Generally the area has not had
a coordinated citywide interagency planning effort, but rather has been studied
and analyzed by various agencies and neighborhood groups as a peripheral
area, or on the margins of several significant planning efforts.

5:30 PM-6:15 PM Reception

6:15 PM-7:30 PM Presentation by Sara Jensen, 2008 Piero N. Patri Fellow

Location: Bayside Room, Pier 1 (where Washington Street meets the
Embarcadero)
