The fight heats up
BN, Keadilan supporters beginmudslinging with offensive words, Mongolian
model posters

Friday, August 22, 2008
.
PENANG - Giant posters of a murdered Mongolian model. A mysterious "Cabinet
list", with an offensive word thrown in.
.
With four days to go before next Tuesday's "mother of by-elections" in
Permatang Pauh, supporters from both the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and
the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat are turning to the tried-and-tested
mudslinging to run down their opponents.
.
On the ruling coalition side, BN supporters have been distributing thousands
of leaflets in this parliamentary constituency of 58,459 voters.
.
Some of them have branded the Keadilan candidate, opposition leader Anwar
Ibrahim, a traitor, a "Chinese agent" who "sold out" his own community by
allying with the multi-racial Democratic Action Party (DAP) and calling for
the abolition of the New Economic Policy, an affirmative action plan that
favours the Malays, reported Malaysiakini.
.
Mr Anwar's Keadilan has teamed up with the DAP and the Parti Islam
SeMalaysia to form an opposition alliance, the Pakatan Rakyat.
.
During their ceramahs (public lectures), the ruling coalition has also been
busy showing video clips of Mr Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a former Anwar
aide, swearing on the Quran that he had indeed been sodomised by his
ex-boss.
.
And in recent days, a 12-page anonymous bulletin has been circulating in
Permatang Pauh, purporting to offer details of an Anwar-led government,
which it dubbed as a Cabinet "Barisan Anwar bin Ibrahim", an acronym of
which is offensive to Muslims as it means pig.
.
Both BN and Pakatan leaders have denied involvement in issuing the bulletin.
.
The personal attacks led Mr Anwar's wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, to
accuse her husband's opponents of waging a dirty campaign. "What wrong has
my husband done to the Malays, non-Malays and the country that he must be
slandered and slaughtered with such scornful lies?" she asked during a
gathering on Wednesday.
.
But supporters from the Anwar camp have not been keeping quiet either.
.
According to Malaysiakini, giant black-and-white posters featuring the face
of Ms Altantuya Shaariibuu, have been placed at prominentlocations around
Permatang Pauh, Mr Anwar's hometown. The posters are not meant to remind
voters of a scandal involving the BN candidate for Permatang Pauh, Mr Arif
Shah Omar Shah - but is linked to Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, the
government minister in charge of the ruling coalition's by-election
campaign.
.
Mr Najib has denied allegations linking him to Ms Shaariibuu's murder. Mr
Abdul Razak Baginda, a former adviser of Mr Najib, is on trial for abetting
the woman's murder.
.
But while the Anwar camp may be trying to make Mr Najib an issue in the
election, the Deputy Prime Minister chose to focus on the big picture during
his appearance at a function in Permatang Pauh on Wednesday night to honour
Malaysia's Olympics hero, silver medallist shuttler Lee Chong Wei .
.
Speaking to a 700-strong Chinese audience, Mr Najib said the BN government
has been fair to the community. "If you go to other places in the region,
the Chinese had to change their names and couldn't go to Chinese schools.
But here, we let everyone practise their culture."
.
Without naming Mr Anwar, Mr Najib took a certain "opposition leader" to task
for making irresponsible promises to the people.
.
"When he was in power, he did not do anything. When he is not in power now,
he makes 1,001 promises to the people. This is just playing politics," Mr
Najib said.
.
BN candidate Arif, who was also at the function, accused Mr Anwar of lying
by claiming that several government MPs are ready to defect to the
opposition.
.
"Anwar said if you vote him, you get two prizes (MP and a new Premier) and
if you vote me, you will just get one prize. He is lying because no BN MP
will defect," Malaysiakini quoted Mr Arif as saying.

"Cabinet BABI"?

A loud mouth was quoted by the Malaysian Insider, a portal run by ex-New
Straits Times journalists still aligned to Kalimullah Hassan and Brenden
Pereira (therefore to Pak Lah), as calling this mysterious Cabinet list as
"Cabinet BABI".

The PKR's side captured a rather interesting poster/banner at Permatang Pauh

Anwar laments attitude of ex-buddies
Athi Veeranggan | Aug 22, 08 1:11pm

Anwar Ibrahim, PKR candidate for Permatang Pauh, can stomach the personal
attacks from top Umno leaders - he expected it. However the barrage of abuse
from local Umno leaders, has made him quite distraught.

He said it was heartbreaking to know that certain local leaders - whom he
regarded as friends - have abandoned their conscience and have chosen to
batter him blue just for mere political gain.

"The local Umno leaders have forgotten that I was once their friend.

"They have sold their soul, lost their dignity and self-respect by attacking
me merely to enhance their political interests," he told a rally at
Permatang Tok Kandu in his by-election campaign trail - which saw yet
another large crowd turnout and what is becoming common, police aerial
surveillance.

Anwar recollected his days in office - when these now highly critical
leaders were always trying to be close to him.

The days of being deputy prime minister, finance minister, Umno's national
deputy president, Penang liaison committee chief and Permatang Pauh division
chief before his sacking from government and party in 1998.

"Before 1998, these same people would follow me ever where, will shake hands
with me and greet me with 'Datuk Seri, Datuk Seri.

"They would be very possessive and protective over me, would not allow
others to come near me.

"But today, they hitting me hard with all sorts of accusations," Anwar
expressed.

Samseng son-in-law

In his speech, he took the opportunity to respond to statements from Umno
Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, and according to Anwar was behaving
like a hired 'Umno samseng' (gangster) entering the by-election campaign
late.

"He (Khairy) suddenly makes an ambush ala mafia here and starts attacking
me, calling on me to swear on this and that.

"Who's he anyway? Ulama, imam or religious scholar?

"He is a mere 'menantu' (son-in-law)," he said, chiding the Rembau Member of
Parliament of trying to win the best samseng title in Umno Youth, in view of
the wing's election late this year.

Anwar faces Seberang Jaya state assemblyperson Arif Shah Omar Shah from
Barisan Nasional and Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) president
Hanafi Hamat in a three-cornered by-election tussle.

Anwar is the firm favourite but he faces the onslaught of the BN and its
'stop Anwar at all cost' campaign for the remaining four campaign days.

Polling is on Tuesday Aug 26.

Fifth police raid of RPK's house - Malaysia lurching towards police state?
posted on Friday, Aug 22nd, 2008 at 16: 44.07

It is most deplorable that the police today raided the house of blogger Raja
Petra Kamaruddin - for the fifth time!

This time the raid is in connection with the statutory declaration made by a
Burmese doctor from Hospital Pusrawi, Dr. Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid, on
August 1 standing by his medical report which ruled out that Mohd Saiful
Bukhari Azlan had been sodomised.

Saiful was examined by Osman before he lodged a police report on June 28
claiming that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had sodomised him.

In his statutory declaration, the doctor claimed that he had fled the
country with his family following several visits by the police.

Malaysiakini, which broke the story of the fifth police raid on RPK's house
today, reported:
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/88325

A five-member team from the Bukit Aman police headquarters
arrived at the blogger's house in Sungai Buloh at 8am. They
confiscated a laptop computer, a scanner and some documents.

According to Raja Petra, this is the fifth time that the police have
raided his house.

"The laptop which they confiscated the last time has yet to be
returned to me," he said when contacted.

The latest police action against Raja Petra is most reprehensible.

Are we moving towards a more open society or retreating back to a closetted
one?

Is Malaysia lurching towards a police state?

Komando 69, Special Action Unit To Ensure Safety In Permatang Pauh
- CID Director

August 22, 2008 21:06 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- The deployment of members of the elite
Komando 69 and Special Action Unit in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary
constituency should not be misconstrued that the situation there is "hot and
dangerous".

Rather, Federal CID director Datuk Bakri Zinin said, their presence was to
ensure the safety of leaders and voters.

He said the Komando 69 and Special Action Unit members would ensure
smooth-running in the run-up to the Permatang Pauh by-election and enable
voters to carry out their duties.

"When an event involves leaders, safety aspects need to be monitored more
carefully," he told Bernama when contacted here Friday.

The police were reported to have increased their strength to 6,000 by the
end of the week, including the deployment of the two elite units, at the
constituency.

When asked if the placement of the Special Action Unit and Komando 69 was
done for the first time during polling, Bakri said it was nothing unusual.

"The Komando 69 unit will not be moving here and there...it will be used
only if a situation warrants it.

"The public need not be afraid because it is for their safety," he said.
