As an only child myself, it wasn’t until I was in my mid thirties that I sat with a group of other ‘only children’ for the first time. Things I’d assumed were specific to my own upbringing turned out to have been theirs too. It was a new, surprising and affirming experience.
Having no sibling as a child, meant having no peer who could witness the details of family life from the inside. That missing experience can never be replaced obviously. However, as adults we can talk to each other and compare and contrast experiences.
