Hi Buzz!

Weren't you, like, the first beachcat sailor?

I have to announce that my H-16 has moved on to more caring hands. I purchased
(turn away now you weak bellied multihullers) a 33' mono and have my hands full
with her for the next year or so. I must admit every time I find myself in a
nice following swell within a few miles of shore I think about how much fun I am
missing out on with all that lead underneath . . .. I keep telling myself just
a year or two from now a perfect 18-2 on an aluminum trailer will come along for
a steal.

I'll stick around to keep tabs on folks (and an ear out for dogger).

My brother and I took it out for trials in June, on Kingsley Lake. It sailed
closer to the wind than the cat, and when a storm approached, we sailed downwind
to the boat ramp at a good rate of speed. It felt nice and solid and stable at
highs speed but the helm didn't want to answer when I turned toward the dock, I
had to depower to turn. I'll post one pic on the lake and one on the trailer.
I've got 4 aluminum benches and decking and am in the process of fabbing up the
cockpit.

Got a buyer already for the tramp.

We definitely need to see pictures of this Hobie tramp.  Although I prefer NACRA
tramps, perhaps your pictures will convince me that the shape, size & condition
of your tramp will fit my lifestyle.  And of course I must consider the behavior
of your tramp - is she truly a tramp, or only a tramp under certain conditions,
such as when her friends are not there?  I need a tramp for all seasons, and all
conditions.  Not just a fair weather tramp.  Is she a tramp in public -and-
private, or just in public?  It's no good if all my friends see me receiving
tramp-like behavior in public, yet when we retreat to my reagtta camping spot,
this tramp turns into princess sparkle fairy or something, and I do not receive
the special benefits of said tramp.
And, please send measurements.

Another thought on paint:

Unless your gel coat is in terrible condition, painting any boat is rather a
last resort. It looks great for a while, but, in the long run, it does not hold
up as well. Good marine primer and paint is pricey. We have an old, terribly
faded set of hulls that once were yellow. Since they are so small, my husband
(who is experienced at boat restoration) is considering re-gel-coating instead
of painting. It is expensive, too, but it is only one coat as opposed to
priming, sanding, then painting.

Point to Ponder #1: You have to rough up the surface in order to get any decent
paint to adhere properly. What are you going to do with the deck non-skid?
There are solutions to this, which generally involve sanding off the embossed
pattern and replacing it with something else, but if the hulls are in good
condition, why bother?

Point to Ponder #2: Paint work needs to be done in reasonable temperatures.
Unless you have indoor heated facilites, this will take time away from sailing!

Idea: You can make a remarkable difference in the appearance of the boat by
changing the striping. You need a steady hand, but it can be done. We did this
on our H18 (plus a good buffing) and the original owner did not recognize the
boat.

A few thoughts on your thoughts:

>i would like to paint the tramp frame, pylons, boom and mast -black-.

Beware. Paint will most likely chip/scrape off and look like crap in short
order. Especially on the rear crossbar where the block hit.

>bottom paint.

Why? Why? Why? Unless you are keeping the boat moored in the water all season,
this is a waste of time. Bottom paint on a monohull is an annual (or bi-annual)
labor. If you feel you must go this route, check out VC-17. Not a bad look (on
a monohull), but be prepared to pay through the nose. And repaint yearly, as it
is thinner than the old ablative stuff, and will not stand up to being dragged
onto a beach.

>how to get the rust off that sail?

I can not vouch for any of these methods on colored sails but the following MAY
work. I offer no guarantees and will not be held responsible for mishaps.

-Lemon juice. (They also added salt to clean old canvas sails.)

-Rust removal stuff like "Rustaid" from Home Depot or FSR.

Just be sure to rinse thoroughly with fresh water.

winter thoughts;
i miss her!

i would like to paint the tramp frame, pylons, boom and mast -black-.
i shall investigate!

looking into different color sheeting and prices.
i have seen some nice colors on ebay, but they want you to buy a 50 ft roll....
home depot hat some interesting stuff, not sure how appropriate.
i will post images in photo section.

bottom paint.
my guess, the non friction toxic stuff up to just above waterline, then hull
paint the
rest of the way up, with a good waxing so nothing sticks when she is low in
water due to load.
i'm wondering if shiny bottom paint exists. will lap the two with a stripe.
unless they are the same color.
not sure on color yet.
eom white, or two tone blue with red stripe.

what is the significance of the numbers on the sail that came with the boat?

dang.
how to get the rust off that sail?
where on earth did that rust colored stain come from?
there does not appear to be anything on the boat that would have caused it.
it must have been left in the dirt, as has the mast, and been stained by the
iron content of the dirt.

i think the roller furler was sailright. color and trim matched the main and
jib.
can i safely assume it is of the same dacron material?
i was told that hydrogen peroxide hardens the sail. not weaken it. i thought
someone here said it softens it?
i think this is more an organic issue, ie, my memory playing with me as it did
with tack and jibe.

regardless, i thought i'd guini pig with the already destroyed furler jib to see
if i can get the rust out.
open to suggestions.

if not removable, well;
if you can't beat them, join them.
how does this sound?
one 5 gallon bucket, saltwater, ten pounds of rusty nails. let sit 6 months.
remove nails. stuff sail in bucket.
rust -is- a nice color, no? the germans call it 'rudge'.
either that, or; draw a pint of blood every month when i get my cumadin levels
checked, refridgerate, combine and soak the sails in that come late spring.
marinara sauce? ketchup? red wine? i've ruined a shirt grappling with mangos,
very juicy/messy.....but not my first color of choice.
anything demonized in a denture cleaner commercial?
what is the largest size sharpies come in?

jokes aside, can the rust be white washed out?
or spot touched up?
say;
white food dye?
vinyl dye?
stationary white out?
fingernail polish?
temp tatoo/ henna ink?

yes, white's book is on my holidays gift list, as is auxiliary coast guard
classes.

hope all are well, happy thanksgiving. (any vegetarians / vegans here?)

Beautiful.

Spending time with my 92 year old, dying dad over here.

Wishing I could have met Mr. (Bill's Dad) Mattson.

Nice!

Gary

Hey guys,

I've got a medium Palm Sidewinder that I barely have used that I'd like to clear
out of the closet. It's a great suit, but didn't fit me quite right and I just
end up using my wetsuits. Contact me offlist if you are interested.

Sheldon
