You are correct sir. BTW, have any of you checked
http://www.tv.cream.org ? What a fantastic site! I actually managed
to get the theme tunes from such classics as Stop, Look, Listen! ,
Button Moon and Pigeon Street from there- as well as the clock you
used to get before a BBC for Schools program came on.

Heya peeps. It seems like all of a sudden Basils been bought back
into all our minds at the same time - it happened to me the other day
when I was mucking about at work and just said 'HA HA HA! BOOM
BOOM!!' and I was like wooooooaaaaaaah, I remember that!
Anyhoo, I really can't remember much 'bout Basil at all - I'm 22 now
so I watched it when I was really young. Has anyone got any fav.
phrases, stories or tales (sorry- brush) they could share with me?

Hey Trish
The list currently is now at 12 people and at least 3 of them see to be in
Australia (where at least you can get a sun tan). I do agree that there
does seem to be a lack of Basil Brush sites in the UK. I also find the lack
of BB vids an annoyance, I have a childrens fairy tale video that has Basil
Brush introducing it, although it has to be said that it was a big
disappointment and he was only on at the beginning for a bout a minute and
never mentioned Dirty Gerty once!
I think the resurgence of BB interest (with the new series) may well
increase the value of basil regalia and memorabilia. You may well be in
possession of potentially appreciating assets! If the list does continue to
gain momentum we could think about pooling our resources and setting up our
web-site (fairly easily done at no cost, other than time). I have seen some
of the basil stuff for sale and to be quite frank it looks crap, it is all
very well supporting your hero but when he looks more like a mutated mole
than a slinky fox , I fail to see the point. Is there a Basil fan club that
anyone knows about.
Well better go and contine the Basil quest...

Bravo!
I am also rather lacking in something interesting to say, and can't really
tell anyone anything they probably don't already know. The Basil Brush site
hosted by "Cribba" is fab although not updated often enough - but the
download clips are good (but too short), and the one with Mr Roy and Basil
by the seaside is good quality without taking up too much space on my hard
drive...unfortunately it's all we've got now. I'm not convinced the new
series is going to do our Basil the justice he deserves, and I don't see why
the Beeb (or whoever own the 70's show) can't just get it out on video for
us truly devoteds. I bought a Fantasy Football video just because Basil is
on it for about 30 seconds (although he is drunk and so not his usual sharp
sarcastic self).
I managed to get hold of a couple of Basil annuals at a toy fair last year
(I paid about £3 each for them) but now some sites are selling the same ones
for about £18. I also got (as a Xmas pressie) an old battered 7" high figure
with flock-fur on plastic - must have cost about 20p to make which cost my
dear mum a fortune from a flea market, but again I have seen them for £38 on
the internet. There are probably hundreds of attics with old Basil stuff in
them, people are sitting (underneath) a goldmine.
I did have some Basil stuff when I was a kid, but never kept it - not
because I didn't love him, it just could never replace the proper Basil
that appeared on our telly....video recorders came into general circulation
too late it seems!
OK, am going now, boom boom!

Part of my problem is that I can't think of much to talk about. It's been
at least 20 years since I last saw the foxy one on television and, although
my love and admiration for him haven't waned, my memories are hazy. Of
course I remember jelly babies, the stories and the interruptions and I can
remember the tune of the final song (if not all the words to all the
incarnations).
So there you have it. Depressing isn't it? If only Foxtel would get hold of
old episodes and put them on UKTV.
Cheers

I still haven't got the knack of cutting bits of a message and date stamping
them. You seem to be in Australia (I am renown for my powers of
observation!) as does quite a proportion of the list (well one other anyway,
which makes up quite a proportion!). Like you I have fairly scant memories
of Basil Brush, my most vivid are the stories with Dirty Gerty at No. 30,
where Basil insists on including her in every story. I remember being in
absolute hysterics at one of these such stories and sat on the sofa with
tears streaming down my cheek, clutching my stomach in sheer agony of
laughter. This is testament to his humour and the fact that many of us seem
to remember him all this time after he was actually on TV. There is a
magical quality about this and I guess this is why he will always be that
bit special. I think the problem is with video that they production company
needs to have a significant market to make it financially viable to release
a video compilation. However, hopefully the hype and publicity surrounding
the new series next year will create renewed demand and a video will be
released.

Basil fans
It's funny (& good) that this list seemed to be spookily quiet, but only at
a time of anguish are the silent voices are brought out by a blow to the
whole Basil Brush scene. Do we know how many people are on this list in
total? Two people seem to be Australia and the rest I am guessing at about
another 8 are in the UK???
Does anyone know if Basil Brush toy exists that when you squeeze his paw -
he shouts Dity Gerty at number 30? I have heard that there is sucha thing,
but only as a rumour. This is in a similar concept to a yawining bagpuss
and Orinoco (of womble fame) singing "Remember you're a womble". Any ideas?

People
Today is indeed a sad day! This is an excerpt from the BBC News web-site.
It is ironic that this chat group has recently been set up and a few days
afterwards Ivan Owen dies. I guess this is all part of the perpetuity of
life.
Sad Regrets :-(
Chris
The man who gave Basil Brush his distinctive "Boom Boom" voice has died
after a long battle with cancer.
Ivan Owen, who was 73, created Basil, along with Peter Firmin, for a
children's puppet show in 1964.
Basil was originally intended as a sidekick to another puppet, Spike McPike,
but the well-spoken fox soon took centre stage himself.
Ivan Owen once said of his creation: "I thought it would be nice to have a
county fox - and Basil's a frightfully good Counties name, don't you think?"
Basil Brush is now being lined up for a TV return after a break of nearly 20
years.
Entertainment Rights, the company which owns the puppet, has confirmed they
are developing a sitcom, Foxed, to be aired next year.
They plan to make six half-hour episodes of Foxed.
International hit
After Basil's first appearance in The Three Scampis he proved to be such a
hit that five years later he was given his own TV show on BBC One.
The series was broadcast in 14 countries and regularly attracted audiences
of up to 13 million.
Basil was dropped by the BBC in 1981 in a row over programme slots, but
returned to co-host the Crackerjack show with Stu Francis.
In May this year Basil made a special guest appearance at the Loaded
magazine awards, picking up a lifetime achievement prize.
A spokeswoman for Entertainment Rights said: "There are no plans that we
know of for a member of Ivan's family to take over his mantle of puppeteer.
"We have a series in development at the moment with Basil Brush, a sitcom,
which we are hoping will go out on air in the New Year."
It was revealed last month that Ivan Owen was dying of cancer and might not
live to see the new show broadcast.
His son, Michael, said: "Dad can leave Basil with a whole generation."

I have found some more info about Basil LPs:
The first LP was released by EMI Group in 1971 on the Starline label (SRS
5051). It wasn't a recording of any of the programmes, rather it was
collection of specially written songs with only a short monologue.
There is a specialist collector who maybe able to help you: David Ayre. He
can be contacted via e-mail: hotter@.... These LPs are now 30 years
old so may be difficult to get hold of a good copy and how much - I don't
know!

Hey Steve
According to the Times on Octover 7th: "the ginger fox is staging a comeback
in his own sitcom, Foxed, to be launched early next year. He plays himself
as an English fox befriended by an American family who have moved to
London." Basil will be a
"handsome fox living in Wimbledon". Wimbledon being the place for many a 70
TV icon - including our furry snouted friends the Wombles. I guess this is
fairly true being an article in a broadsheet, I would also guess thatthis
would be BBC Tv, however I am not totally sure..does anyone else have any
ideas?
At least there seems to be some activity on this list, but I guess that it
is fairly new judging by the fact there was less than 10 people on the list
when I first logged on last week.

Hello everyone,
I've just joined the list.
Can anyone confirm that Basil is coming back to British T.V.
Any details of which channel and the format of the show?
Thank you,
Steve

Hey Antonia!
I am too rather disappointed that there seems to be a rather eerie lack of
activity on this list. Yours is the only message I have recieved. I was
talking to someone at work about Basil and this motivated me to check out
any info on the web and I
came across this list and thought let's see if there are any stories about
Dirty Gerty at number 30! There does seem to be a lack of regalia
associated with our mate Basil, certainly compared to Bagpuss or the
Wombles. As for the LP, there is a shop somewhere in central London, that
deals with old vinyl. I will try and find out the details of this. Where
did you get all this info from, I am impressed that you have got this!
As for the Culture Secretary, I bear very little resemblance to him, in
sexuality, physical appearance and political prowess. However, there was a
great strapline in The Times last week - "Chris Smith should resign, having
demonstrated an amiable but astonishing incompetence". Us Chris Smiths are
a talented lot!

Hey people
I have just joined this group and I am curious to see if indeed anyone is
actually active in this group. When I checked out the web site there only
seemed to be 8 participants which makes the scope of this group rather
limited, but maybe entertaining. Can anyone tell me if there any archives
that contain previous activity in this mailgroup?

Aussie Annette,
What is the 'Blunderful world of BB' about, I assume a foxy puppet being
very foxy and english.
I will endeavour to remember to drop an authentic basil t-shirt at the
gardens point science reception desk for you to pick up next week when I'm
there visiting our research group. If one does not chase me down as I still
have a few spare ones left from my last printing.
If you willing to accept such a valuable gift you have to be willing to
accept the repurcussions, that is running around with like dressed
individuals, drink strong lemonades and act pretensiously foxy. Its actually
not that hard to do.

are still more than one size available but they are all white. If you

strong lemonades and act pretensiously foxy. Its actually not that hard to

Well here's another one. It's been entirely too long since Basil was on the
telly. All I have to remind me of him is a book 'The Blunderful World of

I'm glad to proudly call myself member No. 6 for the foxy one. I am
in Australia and have had several successful Basil Brush parties
involving everyone wearing Basil shirts (image of web site) and
drinking gallons of beer, very Australian.
I hear he is making a resurgence in the UK, about time.
I also have some recordings (LP) etcbut none on disc. Anyway if
anyone has any recordings/images they could email I would be very
appreciative.
Anyway looking forward to hearing from anyone
