Thanks Karlo for this info, Ian has passed on his contact details too. So from my understanding now of your set-up you must have very many banksia's in pots in various stages of growth waiting to plant them out, phew I don't fancy that job much, just all the watering alone every other days enough or have you rigged up a watering system and time clock? The comes the migration and settleing in at their new home phew again. Are you hiring a big digger fro the job?
regards again Ross

I only spoke to Phil Vaughan a few weeks ago...he’s had achange of heart and is staying put. From what i understand, he’s also committed to speaking at the ASGAP Conference in Geelong in September.

I would ring before going to Vaughan's. Last time I was down there (late last year), he was saying that the end of the business was near, although he has been saying that for a while. Like many in the nursery business, the drought has affected him badly. (Although Kuranga seems to go from strength to strength).

Isn't it funny how you learn about places shop I'd never heard of the Geelong nursery but if your down here for a time long enough to spend a bit of time together we could visit some together if you like?

I forgot to tell you YES Kuranga is Melbourne's main native plant supplier situated in the foothills of the Dandenong ranges.

Date: Thursday, 19 March, 2009, 11:21 PMHi Ross,
Glad you got B.audax to germinate... it’s an unusual banksia and quite rare. I already have a B.media in bud in an 8” pot.... and my prostrate form has already flowered earlier.
I’ve heard of Karunga nursery... is it in Melbourne??
I just got back from WA...visits to Kings Park, Banksia Farm and Stirling Range NP. It was a great trip and i took away a lot from the experience. Later i’ll post some pics.
Regards
Karlo

A bit of an update for you mate, a seed from your old B. Audax bag has finally sprouted up so those seeds well really seed was still viable thank you now for the tricky part of keeping it alive till is big enough to grow in the ground, Thanks again Karlo. We had 35mm of rain last week and aren't my banksia's happy now
. Kuranga Nursery had their Autumn sale two weeks back and I came home with a load of replacements, some Banksias that I'd lost about 6 new dryandras, some grafted grevillea and other odds and ends, actually I filled the car up i was having such a good time, now most are in the ground. One plant I'm hoping to survive was a $20.00 B media at about 3" tall with buds nearing opening, my take on it was well if it dies the flowers alone are worth that much at a florist. PS if you want one similar let me know and I'll find a way to get it to you may not have as many buds as the one I got though. Pot bound for sure. But good for cuttings etc at worst.
take care and thank you again mate.

Date: Friday, 23 January, 2009, 1:22 PMHi Scott,
I usually sow seeds in late February and then harden them off in the following Spring...if they survive the Summer, they usually kick on.
I sterilize my pots before use and pouring boiling water over my potting medium which is in a bucket – letting it cool overnight in that bucket. Then, i sow before placing under glass.
The advice you previously gave me was spot on. The B.integrifolia var monticola seedlings are no longer bog watered in a saucer and i’ve sprayed with very weak seasol...being careful not to water again unless soil feels dry. Being in the shade seems to have helped a lot also...as the the leaves are starting to green up. It seems i was doing quite a lot wrong.. I’ll learn from the experience.
In Summer, should i water with an anti-fungal occasionally? ?

Subject: RE: [banksias] more yellowing issuesKarlo sounds like you have a fungal problem. Probably Pythium or some other species of Phytopthora or similar.
There are couple of ways to overcome the problem - ie. don't grow seedlings in summer, or use new pots or sterilised pots, a new potting medium source etc and keep seperated from any other seedlings.
I have had this problem myself.
