PERFORMANCE IN THE FIELD

The waffles continued to be an enjoyable and tasty snack between meals and for
dessert. I especially liked the chocolate flavor which was a special treat
after a long day on the trail. I usually carried one waffle in my pocket so it
was warm and soft. The waffles held up well during transit in a pocket or in my
food bag. They became crumbly and broken when I carried them for three or more
days on the longer trips, but they still tasted good.

I saved a chocolate waffle for the last day of the 5-day Joshua Tree trip after
we returned to the car. It was warm and soft from being in my pocket all day.
I think the filling was a little more gooey than usual or maybe I was just a
little more tired than usual.

I found the waffles to be hard and chewy in the colder temperatures. The change
in temperature did not affect the taste. I enjoyed the waffles as an afternoon
snack on a showshoe hike in the Big Bear mountains.

SUMMARY

I really enjoyed this test. I had been looking at the waffles in my local
outdoor gear store and was curious about them. While the chocolate was my
favorite, the honey and lemon flavors were nice alternatives.

This test series is now concluded. Thank you to Honey Stinger Waffles and
BackpackGeartest.org for allowing me to participate in this testing opportunity.

I need to request an extension request for the following reports:

* Acli-Mate Sports Drink
* Amphibian Pack

I'm heading off to a backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon tomorrow followed by
a work conference in SLC (I posted the OOP through the website form). I have one
day between the trips where I might be able to complete the report, but I'd like
the extension just in case.

Sincerely,

I have only one app so far for the Artisana Foods test call (thanks
Frances!), and it closes tomorrow night. Really folks, how can you go
backpacking or even dayhiking without food? Check out their website
if you have not already:

http://www.artisanafoods.com/

The food is organic and gluten-free. The only people that should be
cautious about applying are those with nut allergies.

Remember, more apps ==> more test calls ==> more good gear for all!

Backpacking Background:
I used to backpack in college a zillion years ago and just in the last few years
have backpacked some private trails in Tennessee, Missouri and most recently
South Carolina. I have been an avid car-camper for twelve years and I have
kayak/canoe camped for five years, both in South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri
and Arkansas. I use a lot of the same equipment for both. I hike hilly/rocky
trails especially in Missouri (my home state) and Arkansas. I live in South
Carolina and am busy checking out the terrain here with my nineteen year-old
son.

Test Plan
I hike and camp a lot in South Carolina and some in North Carolina. My son and I
are cooks. The first time I took him camping (he was 4), after he tasted
"camping breakfast" cooked outdoors, he looked at me and said, "Mom, you're a
genius!" We love the challenge of making good gourmet food in the backcountry
and on car camping trips. So I will test for the following: Are the items
durable? Do they pack well? Do they clean well? Are they actually useful or
do they just look and sound groovy? I like GSI stuff and own several of their
products.

Nope, not the electronic kindle for reading books…
Our new friends at Amundson Outdoor Products Ltd have an exciting new combo of
cookware for three lucky testers. I have
to say, this looks like an interesting test, so I hope to see plenty of
applications! This is a stove-type system that uses water
activated heat packs to bring water to a boil.
The manufacturer claims this product will work with snow as well, so for
those of you who struggle to find a reliable winter stove, now is your chance!

This is a new manufacturer to BGT and will include
both the Cook Box and the Café. Get your
food and a hot beverage with this one!

Check
them out here:

I’m looking for short apps that have the following:

1. The
opening disclaimer for testing

2. Your bio

3. A brief test plan; just enough to demonstrate that you understand the product
and where/how you will be testing it and how you will meet the minimum
requirements.

4. A list of what you are now testing and a link to tester page

5. Number of ORs in the past 12 months (not including your initial 2)

APPLICATION TO TEST GSI PACK KITCHEN 8.

Please accept my application to test the GSI Pack Kitchen 8. I have read Chapter
Five of the BackpackGearTest Survival Guide, version 0609, and I will follow all
requirements. My signed BGT Agreement is on file.

I have more than 15 years of backpacking experience. Day hikes and 2-3 day
backpacking trips take place on most weekends throughout the year while longer
trips are only occasional. I backpack predominantly in mountain terrain (Coast
Range, Cascades and Canadian Rockies) with the goal of summiting peaks.
Activities I use my gear with include mountaineering, ski touring, rock
climbing, kayaking, biking, trail running, Search and Rescue and overseas
travel. I like my gear to be reasonably light, convenient and simple to use
though I would not claim to be a lightweight hiker.

TEST PLAN

I have some upcoming Ski-tours (tenting and/or hut-hut) in March and April. May
and June climbing/hiking trips planned (tenting). I will have no trouble meeting
the minimum overnight requirments and will no doubt need cooking items for these
trips. I would be looking at the usefulness of the items in the 'kitchen' and
see how this portable 'kitchen' transports and holds up to meal time in the back
country.

1) Please

reporting terms and requirements. My signed tester agreement is on file. I will

Backpacking Background: I
started backpacking in Wisconsin as a youth, being involved in the Boy Scouts
programs. As a young adult, I worked at a summer camp leading backpacking,
canoeing and mountain biking trips. I now generally take short weekend or day
trips in rough, mountainous terrain, although I have extensive experience in
the upper Midwest as well. I take one or two longer trips each year, where I
typically carry about 40 lb (18 kg). I prefer to be prepared and comfortable,
but I have taken lightweight trips as well.

------

3) Test Plan

March
- July: Over the testing period I will take roughly two trips per month ranging
from 1-2 nights.

My backpacking
trips take me to the top of 14,000 ft. (4,267 m) peaks as well as high alpine
lakes, just for kicks! My plans will
take me to several base camp locations near several peaks where I will hike,
summit, descend and repeat. I’ll see
snow, high winds and temperatures as low as 0 F (-18 C) but perhaps as high as
90
F (32 C) along steep trails, scree slopes and all sorts of nasty environments.
Because of the cold, I would love to see how the
foods hold up in the high alpine cold
conditions. Normally I carry my snacks
inside my layers so they don’t freeze, which makes them a little less
accessible. I love all sorts of nut butters, so this would be right up my
alley. I would love to see how many different ways I can use the items sent
(ooh, is it a mystery?!) More importantly will it provide a good energy boost
when I need it. I will also take these along on snacks doing other outdoor
activities, such as mountain biking, day hikes, etc.

I apologize for not getting my reports in! Our computer is still down. We are
on the waiting list at the very busy Apple computer store to get the computer
worked on. This is a catch 22 since we could probably replace the internal mouse
ourselves, but our warranty would be voided if we worked in the computer
ourselves. It's so frustrating! I hope Erin and I are not causing too much of
an issue with these late reports, we both feel terrible for not being able to
get things done. As of now we are waiting for a call to see when Apple can
repair the problem. I apologize again, thank you!

Hi Kurt,

I would dearly love to apply for this test, but it doesn't ship overseas. I
guess I'll stay hungry on the trail :(

I backpacked
for the first time in 2006 and am now hooked. I have hiked most of my life in
the South on flat land or small hills. I have hiked mostly on the east coast,
doing weekend trips in the Appalachian Mountains. Since moving to Arizona, my
hikes have ranged from short desert hikes to overnight backpacking trips
throughout the state. I am working towards lightening the load and currently
use a solo non-free standing tent, canister stove, and purification tabs to cut
down on weight. Most of my hikes are solo and range from an overnight trip to
4-5 nights on the trail.
Test Plan:
I will take the
Artisana nut butters with me on my backpacking and longer day trips. As a
vegan, it is often difficult to find trail ready protein sources, so this test
will provide me with new options to brighten up the standard peanut butter and
jelly. I will see how these nut butters hold up on the desert heat, are they
easy to mix before use if they separate due to heat, do they taste good, does
the packaging hold up to being stuffed in a backpack for days at a time. I am
also intrigued by the super foods products and am interested on their taste,
texture, and how they can be worked into a backpacking diet.

APPLICATION TO TEST KINDLE COOK AND CAFE

Please accept my application to test the Kindle Cook and Cafe. I have read
Chapter Five of the BackpackGearTest Survival Guide, version 0609, and I will
follow all requirements. My signed BGT Agreement is on file.

TESTER BIOGRAPHY

Name: Theresa Lawrence
Age: 35
Gender: Female
Height: 5 ft 8 in (173 cm)
Weight: 125 lbs (57 kg)
Email: theresa_newell AT yahoo DOT com
Location: Sparwood, British Columbia, Canada

May,
June, July climbing/hiking trips planned (tenting). I will have no trouble
meeting the minimum overnight requirements and will no doubt need to eat for
these trips. I'm very curious how this will work with snow when I need to melt
snow to get water for cooking and drinking. And also, in colder temperatures,
the colder the weather the longer it takes to heat up, so it would be
interesting to see how long it would take to make a meal when camping in snow.
During this period of testing the climate here will be changing from cold
temperatures in the first half to warmer temperatures later, so I'd be able to
see the difference. But also I'd look at convenience, clean up and portability.

Hi Ray,
We can use a USB mouse, but the internal mouse is stuck in the clicked position
so it constantly clicks things as I drag the USB mouse across the screen. It
bounced the cursor around while typin and a host of other odd things..

LONG TERM REPORT

February 28, 2013

Field Locations and Test Conditions:

I have continued to carry the knife everyday in my right front pocket. For the
unforeseeable future I believe it has found a permanent home there.

I have completed 4 more day hikes and one quick overnighter to round out this
test. The day hikes were in the foothills near Boulder, CO. Elevations ran
between 5,000 to 8,000 ft (1,500 to 2400 m) and the temperatures were in the
40's F (4 C). I brought the knife with me every hike and mostly used it to
prepare lunch.

I also took it with me on a 2 day 1 night backpacking trip to Lefthand
Reservoir. The weather was pretty nice, sunny with the high around 35 F (2 C)
and low was 10 F (-12 C). The knife was mostly used for lunch and dinner prep.
Pretty boring trip for knife usage though it did an outstanding job at every
task.

Most of the usage came from just having it with me on a daily basis. I used it
for opening packages, trimming things, cleaning my nails, prying open lids and
just simple use of a sharp edge. I honestly found more uses on a daily basis
then I did while hiking or backpacking.

Observations:

My final observations are based on the fact that I really like this knife. I
have never before carried a knife with me everyday and now I do. It fits my hand
well and I have used it for a multitude of tasks. It made me think about what I
did before I had a knife with me on a daily basis. I guess I just made do or
found a different tool for the task. I have not sharpened the knife yet and it
still seems to have an edge on it. I'm sure it will need a good sharpening
eventually.

The one feature of the knife that I have decided I could really do without is
the instant open feature. It is really cool and a fun feature but is really not
needed and if it was missing I don't think it would bother me. For me I think a
locking feature would have more usage.

Summary:

The Gerber Instant Knife has become a daily companion in my front pocket and a
nice addition to my hiking/backpacking gear. I will continue to carry it with me
on the trail and even though I would not normally carry a knife this heavy,
since it rides in my front pocket the weight just becomes a none issue.

Pros:
	 • Combo blade
	 • Comfortable in my hand
Cons:
	 • No locking feature

This concludes the test and I would like to thank BackpackGearTest.org and
Gerber for the opportunity to test this knife.
