Do you happen to have materials (notes, info, rules, etc.) on

Greetings Everyone!
My name is Logan and I'm from Multimedia University Malaysia (MMU).
This is just to let you guys know that MMU will be bidding for the
Worlds in 2004.
The WUDC has never been to Malaysia before and has only been to Asia
once (Manila 1999) so we think it's time it came into this region
again. It would be a great oppurtunity to promote debating in Malaysia
and Asia, as well as have some great fun in the tropics!
We've set up an elaborate website where you will be able to find out
all you need know about KL 2004. Just go to www.kl-worlds2004.com.
Please get in touch if you need to know more than what's there or have
quirky suggestions or rancid abuse. Hope you can help us bring the
Worlds to Malaysia!
Cheers

Dear All --
Just a quick clarification on what's going on with registration....
Although the registration deadline has technically come and gone, we are
doing our best to keep it open for as long as possible. The Royal York
required that we send a rooming list to them this past Monday, which has
been done. That said, we can continue to add to that list, as long as
they have sufficient rooms. We cannot guarantee that any registrations
arriving from here on in will get all the "perks" the other teams will
have (there are some souvenir items that will be ordered in the next few
days, and we have no intention of ordering more than we need), but we
will try to accept FULLY PAID registrations for as long as possible.
THAT having been said, we will not even try to get rooms for teams who
have not paid by December 14th or made arrangements to our satisfaction.
Sorry, it's just too difficult to manage, too close to D-Day. If the
Royal York fills its rooms before that date, we will let you know at
once.
If you have paid registration (we love you), but not submitted your
registration forms, or submitted incomplete forms (we love you a little
less), PLEASE GET US THAT INFORMATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The Royal
York needs that information.
Love you all, sorry for the caps, and I hope to see you all in four
weeks!

Deputy Convenor & Communications Director
WUDC 2002, Hart House, University of Toronto
Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends!
Hi to all folks coming to the WUDC! Please share this with the Debaters
and Adjudicators coming from your school as we are only sending
correspondance to the contact person.
We are still accepting registrations as we want to include as many
people as possible, however, late registrations make our work here
difficult. We are confirming our hotel numbers on Monday morning.
Please be courteous and get your rego in ASAP or encourage your debating
friends to get their stuff in NOW! We will stop accepting regos at some
point in early December. We hope that most people who are planning to
register have already indicated their intent as purchasing airline
tickets and getting required visas gets sticky as we get much closer.
In a few short weeks ( five weeks to be exact!) we will be welcoming you
to Toronto!
Things are running quite smoothly for the tournament organizers, but we
need your cooperation to keep things on track! Please take note of the
following points.
1. Participant Forms. We need to get our rooming list to the hotel on
MONDAY. If you have not submitted your Participant Information forms
(which outlines your rooming preferences) we need these ASAP....All
forms should be faxed or email NO LATER THAN Midnight Toronto time on
Sunday, November 25. Please help us and get your stuff in on time.
2. Upgrades/Early Arrivals/Accommodations
We will be confirming all upgrades with participants next week. Please
note that if you have chosen to upgrade to Single, Double or Triple
occupancy, you will be charged an upgrade fee upon arrival at the
tournament. Upgrade fees are payable to the TOURNAMENT NOT TO THE
HOTEL. If you are planning to arrive EARLY (ie before December 27) or
stay late (after January 4) and you want to stay in the tournament
hotel, you need to submit an EARLY ARRIVAL form (on the accommodation
page of our website). Please get this form to us BY SUNDAY NIGHT.
3. VISAS
We have been processing invitation letters as soon as we can. PLEASE
when you send your request for an official invitation letter (for visa
or funding purposes) to jen.hamilton@... your ADDRESS
AND A FAX NUMBER.
4. ARRIVAL INFORMATION
If you did not indicate your arrival information on the rego form,
please send it to us as soon as it is confirmed for your participants.
Please let us know if you have futher questions. You can call or email
us.
The WUDC Committee!
Hi folks
You might have received this email already today....Please forward to
anyone who you think is planning to attend the World Universities
Debating Championships this year. Part of our tournament success is
contingent on people registering by our deadline, which is one week from
today.
Hello all from Toronto.
We are writing to give you a quick registration update. There are a
number of schools that we are still expecting to
register, who have not contacted us yet. We are sending this list to
you, so you can review it. If your school is
NOT on this list, please contact us ASAP regarding your intent to
register for WORLDS. Our deadline is quickly
approaching--November 15. We understand that many of us do things at
the last minute....however, we have
obligations to our hotel and caterers etc. Which means we need to know
in the next few days if you are coming!
We want every school to have the opportunity to register, and although
it makes it difficult for us, if
there is some reason that you can not make this deadline, it is better
to let us know NOW. We do understand that
some schools may have very special circumstances which prevents you from
having your funding exactly by
November 15, we are considering these exceptions on a case by case
basis...BUT YOU MUST INDICATE
YOUR INTENT TO PARTICIPATE BY SENDING US YOUR REGISTRATION FORMS BY
NOVEMBER
15. If you can not submit payment by this date, you need to let us know
and we will consider your circumstances.
We have many schools who sent a pre-reg. deposit over 6 months ago who
have not corresponded with us since then.
Also, if you know of others in the debating world who have said they are
attending Worlds and they are not on this
list, please contact them for us and let them know that we have not
heard from them!
The planning committee is has been working extremely hard to prepare for
the tournament. We are eagerly
anticipating your arrival in Toronto, and hope you are look forward to
attending what we hope will be an enjoyable
8 days in Toronto. Your cooperation in getting your registration
materials in to us by the deadline will aid in the
success of this event!
We hope this list is as accurate as possible....if there are errors

Please share this email with your colleagues in the Debating World!
59 days and counting to the WUDC!
As of October 29., we have not yet reached our cap....therefore we are
still accepting registrations! We need to receive all forms and payment
by November 15, as we have a deadline to guarantee numbers to the hotel.
If your institution has fully paid, you will have received a
confirmation email from us within a week of us receiving your forms and
payment. All participant registration forms should also be submitted by
November 15.
Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions
Can our institution send more teams and judges?
Yes! We are still accepting registrations and you may add teams at
anytime until Nov. 15.
We pre-registered 5 teams, but can only send 3.
You will lose your deposit for the 2 teams that you aren't sending. The
pre-reg deposit was non-refundable.
We are sending 3 teams, but we can't find any judges.
Each institution sending more that 1 team MUST send n-1 judges.
Can we send more than n-1 judges?
Yes.
Our institution pre-registered, but now can't send any teams. Can I
still come as a judge?
Yes. You will be required to pay the registration fees ($600 plus tax)
and submit the Participant Registration form and payment by November 15.
My teammate is from another university, can we register as a team.
NO. No hybrid teams are allowed at worlds.
We can't submit our payment by November 15. What do we do.
Your team is not officially registered until all payment is received.
Exceptions are decided on a case by case basis. You should contact
register.worlds@... and request an exception. This is only
granted in exceptional circumstances.
We fully registered and paid for 4 teams, but one team was eaten by
goats and can't make it to the tournament--can we get a refund?
Try to find a replacement team. All payments are considered final.
Partial refunds may be considered on a case by case basis if requested
by December 15. We can not guarantee a full refund once paid. These
requests will be considered by the WUDC committee.
Who is registered?
Check our website at the end of next week.
We haven't booked our flights, but we have all the other information on
the registration forms.
Please go ahead and submit the registration forms asap, you can confirm
your flight information at a later date. We do need to know when you
are arriving though.
When is the tournament finished?
The final round will be on January 3 in the evening. You will check out
of the hotel on January 4, so unless you are planning on staying longer,
you can make your travel arrangements for the 4th.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have further questions.
Please encourage other institutions to register asap.
Sincerely:
The WUDC Committee in lovely Toronto Canada.
Dear All,
I have had several e-mails from concerned club presidents, worried
that they had to be *registered* by now, and that we had received full
payment from 319 schools. This is not the case. If you pre-registered
teams with us, and paid the fifty dollar (CDN) deposit, then your school
has those teams' spots protected. The only issue will be at the deadline
for payment (October 15th). Schools that have pre-registered, but fail
to pay their fees in full by that date risk losing their spots. If you
are paying by wire transfer, payment is considered complete only when we
receive faxed confirmation of the transfer.
Sorry for any confusion that resulted from the way I worded
yesterday's e-mail.

Deputy Convenor & Communications Director
WUDC 2002, Hart House, University of Toronto
Dear All --
School has begun again, and our course outlines, combined with
World's palnning duties mean that there are more than a few students at
Hart House who won't be having much in the way of a social life this
fall... but that's okay. Just a few details we want to pass on to all of
you:
- We currently have 319 teams registered, and our cap is 320. I'm sure
you guys can do the math, but let me just suggest that if you haven't
registered yet, there could be quite a race for the final spot... (I
wish I could accept bribes, but they will make no difference.)
- We have received a number of anonymous wire payments. I would love to
accept these as charitable gifts towards Worlds, or towards my own
tuition fees... but I assume that if you have paid, you will want to
debate. If you have wired us any payment, could you please fax us the
receipt if you have not done so.
- We will have copies of the training video ready to be sent out in a
few weeks... check the Adjudication page on our website for details in
the coming weeks. http://worlds2002.com
- As usual, you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate
to contact us.
I would also like to take this moment to express the Committee's concern
regarding the events of yesterday in New York and Washington. We hope,
especially in the case of our APDA and NPDA colleagues, that you, your
families, and friends are all well.

Dear All (apologies to anyone who receives this twice),
The organising committee of Worlds 2002 at the University of Toronto are commencing their exhaustive search for independent adjudicators.
Independent adjudicators are typically non-university affiliated, self-funded, attendants at Worlds. Frequently they have a dazzling debating record themselves, and attend the tournament for the selfless purpose of imparting their wisdom on a younger generation, and the less selfless purposes of eliciting adulation and reminiscing about how much better debating was in their day. Other times they are just people who really like going to debating tournaments!
If you, or anyone at your university now or previously, or anyone else you happen to know in any geographical region (especially AustralAsia), are remotely interested in attending Worlds 2002 as an independent adjudicator, please (ask them to) email me at alexmacoun@.... Anyone who emails me will then be sent an official "we think you rock, please come to our tournament" invitation from the lovely folk in Toronto - bonus! Obviously no such expressions of interest commit you to attending the tournament should you change your mind later.
If you have any questions about your potential independent adjudicator status, or Worlds 2002 specifically, please feel free to email me, or, even better, visit the tournament website at www.worlds2002.com.
Please share this with your friends and family in the debating world....
Please take a moment and check out our website (http://worlds2002.com)
as we have recently added a few things
--A handy Frequently Asked Questions section
--Information about discounted Air Travel on AIR CANADA...the official
AIRLINE of the WUDC.
If you are making your travel arrangements from outside of North
America, you should go through your travel agent OR the Air Canada
Website (www.aircanada.ca) has contact phone numbers in many countries.
BE SURE to quote our Convention Number: CV106187.
--We have also added our registration forms in Microsoft WORD format for
people having trouble downloading a PDF document.
We are pleased to announce that The Document Company-XEROX has signed on
as a contributing sponsor. More information about Xerox will be posted
to our site in a few days.
WIRING PAYMENTS:
If you are planning to wire your payment for the WUDC please note:
--Any errors in the address or account number will make it difficult for
us to trace your payment and we will be charged a fee. Please make sure
you have your bank wire EXACTLY to the information shown on our site.
--We need you to fax or email a receipt THAT CLEARLY INDICATES the date,
your institution/school, and the amount that you sent. This will help
us trace your payment.
--We currently have almost 20 wires that we haven't traced. If you have
not yet sent a copy of the wire receipt, please do so.
Communicate.worlds@...
Dear All,
Exams are over, marks are in, graduates have graduated (but they’ll be
back to debate, you can bet on it!), and no one at Hart House is giving
a thought to school or debating until September. Right? Wrong!!
Although it is summer, we’re gearing up the preparations for World’s,
and it seemed like a good idea to send this reminder out to you all. The
most minor piece of news we have is that the website is being updated,
and revamped. The real cause for excitement is the reason for this
particular development: REGISTRATION OPENS ON JUNE 29TH. “June 29th?” I
hear you say, scratching your heads. “Surely that’s this Friday?” Yes it
is. (I told you that we weren’t slowing down just because it’s summer.)
Full details of the registration procedure will be available after
Friday on the website. It’s not that we’re changing anything
substantive, we just want to make it a little easier to understand. Also
available online will be the very important registration forms. So check
it out.
In the meantime, e-mail any questions you may have about registration to
Dilnaz Panjwani (register.worlds@...), and any general questions
to me at communicate.worlds@.... We are compiling a list of
frequently asked questions to put up on the website, and just because
we’re conscientious, warm-hearted, and giving, we’ll even include the
answers.

Dear Random Debating people,
I'm doing a bit of an Asia-Pacific muster for Toronto Worlds. As at May 26
2001, only the institutions below have pre-registered from Australasia (no.
of teams in brackets):
Ateneo De Manila University (4 teams)
China University English Speaking Association (1)
International Christian University, Japan (3)
Mahidol University International College (3)
Monash University (3)
Multimedia University (2) [Malaysia]
National University of Juridicial Sciences (1) [Which is...???]
North South University (1)
Otago University (3)
University of Auckland (2)
University of Queensland (4)
University of Singapore (2) [I guess this means NUS?!?]
University of Technology, Sydney (2)
Universityof New South Wales (3)
Just off the top of my head, I note that the list doesn't include Sydney
(hmmm...), Melbourne, De la Salle, Nanyang, Adelaide, Charles Sturt,
University of the Phillippines, Victoria (Wellington), Bond, ANU, QUT, RMIT,
any
of Bangladesh or Pakistan or much of India ... and no doubt stacks of
others.
If you are from one of the missing universities, and you or anyone else has
any inclination to go to Toronto (and I suggest you do!), you should
pre-register licketty split, by visiting http://www.worlds2002.com . Even
if you don't end up going, it is vital that you pre-register NOW, or a whole
lot of dull British and American teams will get the extra spots which are
rightfully ours. The team cap is still 2, but there's a half-decent chance
that it'll be bumped up - especially if noone else registers! The site also
has all the previous updates emailed out, plenty of helpful info, and a
whole lot of pretty pics (very few of which contain snow. Oh the
deception!).
I've also sent this to some of you in the hope that you'll forward it on to
any other contacts you may have in the greater Asian region (*hint, hint*).
Any questions? Email Dilnaz the rego monkey at register.worlds@...
or me at alexmacoun@....
Apologies to those who got the message twice.
Cheers,
Alex Macoun
Deputy Chief Adjudicator
Toronto Worlds 2002
Dear All-
Well, summer is nearly here, and crocuses are peeking through the
snow. (That's a joke.) Pre-registration is open for another fifteen
days, and although it's going fairly well, we're still (as always)
concerned that we are not getting word out to everyone. ASK YOUR FRIENDS
IF THEY ARE GETTING OUR MESSAGES! We rely on you, as participants, to
help us make this a success. As of now, we have 55 institutions
registered, with almost all of them registering more than two teams. We
could easily fill our total cap without many more institutions signing
up, but that kind of defeats the purpose. We'd rather have fewer
debaters from more schools.
Our website is functional. It has all the information you need to
complete your pre-registration. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME YOUR
REGISTRATION!!! That information must go to Dilnaz Panjwani, at
<register.worlds@...>. Stay tuned to the website for further
updates, especially in our Toronto guide. We love you all, even if we
are near exhaustion.

Dear All-
We are right in the middle of exams at U of T right now, so forgive
me if this letter is a little clipped. There are some new developments
for WUDC 2002, and we thought we ought to keep you guys posted. If
you're in a rush, save this e-mail for later, as some of the information
is quite important.
-- The website is now up and running. It's not beautiful, but it works,
and has the important info. Expect a major overhaul over the summer, as
well as on-going develpment, especially in our "Toronto" section. We
hope to give you guys a clear idea of what to expect when you get here.
http://worlds2002.com
-- Also very important is the "Updates" section of the website. Every
time we update the information online, we will put a notice on that
page. Check regularly! At the moment, there is only one update, as we
have added the wire payment instructions to the registration page.
-- Wire payment information. Here is the full payment information for
pre-reg:

We will provide paper receipts for all registrations upon arrival at the
WUDC.
-- Pre-registration is going along at quite a clip. We are, however,
concerned as usual that we might not be reaching people evenly across
the globe. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR COUNTRY'S MAILING
LIST TO SEE THAT EVERYONE IS GETTING THE RELEVANT INFORMATION. We are
getting closer to our cap, and if anyone out there is not yet aware that
pre-reg is open, they NEED TO KNOW. Please excuse the use of caps, but I
cannot emphasize the importance of this enough.
--On a related not, I have been unable to get access to the NPDA or APDA
mailing lists. Could someone who knows about that sort of stuff let me
know what magical incantations are needed? In the meantime, please help
me out by checking with your friends to see that they are receiving the
appropriate information. So far, you should all have received a general
introductory e-mail, a pre-registration e-mail, and for certain groups,
"sorry we missed you" e-mail.
Okay, that's about it for this missive. As I said, check the website
regularly to see if anything has been updated. I hope that those of you
in exams right now are getting along OK.

Dear All-
It's a fairly hectic time of year in Canadian universities, so forgive us if
this is the first time you're hearing from me. We've sent out a few e-mails
about World's 2002 (quite a few in fact), but it's becoming apparent that we're
not reaching everyone with our current list. As a result, pre-registration has
already opened, and we are concerned that not everyone knows full details of
what's going on, so here's a copy of the two e-mails we've sent out so far. If
you have any questions, or know of anyone who ought to be added to our mailing
list, please let me know ASAP! Thanks. If you're getting this for the third
time, sorry.

Dear All,
Here is a copy of the pre-registration information for World's 2002.
The same information will be available online at our website
(http://worlds2002.com) as
of early next week. At the moment, there is
one piece of information missing: this e-mail does not include
instructions for wiring payment. This information will be on the
website, and will also be the subject of an e-mail to be sent out next
week. Sorry for the delay. Blame the bank.
Also, if you know of anyone who should be receiving this information
and is not, please forward it to them. But don't let them suffer in
silence; have them e-mail me to have their name added to the list.
Bundles of exam-taxed love,

All those interested in Australasians style debating should look at the
Australasians 2001 website, www.ntu.edu.sg/australs. We are currently
working on a website for AIDA, the association governing debating in the

Hi Patrick,
I am Anamika and am majoring in History from St. Stephen's
College, New Delhi- India. I have been associated with austral asian
debating format for the last two years. If you want to check out the format,
go to a site called www.debating.net and click on links. Next click on
Australasian Debating Championships. That will take you to the site. Do you
have any international debating championships in your country? I would love
to hear from you.
Anamika.

Hello.
Hi.
Hows'it shakin'?
Verity called Rosati's to cancel this morning. They were apparently nicer
about that than they were when we were coming. This means the first night is
officially at the (s)Exchange. Hoorah!
The deal with the Exchange as it stands is that we have a private room and
access to the rest of the venue which will probably be quite quiet as there
is no football at Colonial that night. If a sponsor comes on board I will
need a bit of cash to wave at the venue to make the whole place private. We
will probably be able to have spirits on the tab, and there is room for a DJ
if we want it. I was originally against the idea, but now I'm not so sure. A
DJ will probably cost around $350, and while the venue has a pumping sound
system, this will only allow us to play CDs louder. What's more, I don't
really own any crowd pleasing CDs, only credible ones. What should we do.
Input required. On the one hand, I think the first night is often just a
night to catch up and there's an early wake-up the next morning, but if we
are having cheap drinks and plenty of them, maybe people will want to dance,
and this venue will lend itself to it beautifully. I just don't know.
The rest of the nights are all cool, but I have checked around and
Charlton's still looks the best venue for Tuesday night ... sorry.
Please reply on the DJ issue.
Wilko, let me know when you will be finished exams so we can do some
practice debates.
Luke.

Peoples,
The Melbourne Aquarium has posted me this rather big and fancy 'information'
kit detailing prices, etc.
If anyone wants to have a look at it, I'm quite happy to pass it on.
Give me a bell on 92868216 or write directly to me at medea@...
