A large concern of mine regarding the Planning Commission current make-up is: I don't believe there is a single member that has a planning background (training, employment, or education) or even a design background. I know Dave Anderson is an engineer (environmental I believe); but that is "it" (and I wouldn't consider an engineer a planning or design professional) - but at the same time, I don't know much about Jay Reddy, Gerardo Castillo, or Clint Small. Does anyone else?
If I am correct (and that there isn't anyone on the Planning Commission with a planning, or even design, background) I think it rather "ridiculous." True, there are social and policy sides of planning that are important; but the real core of urban planning is physical planning (for land use and transportation, especially) - and to not have anyone on the PC with expertise or background in these areas is appalling.

I'd vote revival - but have spent most of my (much more highly limited than before) time commenting on blogs lately. I have been killing the spam when it arrives and deleting the 'members'.
But in the interest of actual content:
Just today, Wells Dunbar wrote this article about the new B&C appointments: http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A819414
I've already complained that he kind of let Laura Morrison steer the discussion (with the inaccurate implication that the 'old' makeup of the Planning Commission was 7 pro-density and 2 neighborhood-association-types). I actually was probably a bit low when I said there were only 2 reliable urbanist votes before; I forgot Jay Reddy, so you could say there were 3 urbanists, 2 nimbyists, and 4 swing votes. Still, it was never 7-2.
I would highly encourage others on this list with experience with the Planning Commission's recent make-up to speak up.

I've seen nothing but spam on the austin_urbanists list since February.
Is there hope that this list will be active again? Of course each of us has the
option of simply quitting, but I'd hate to leave and then miss out on future
useful activity. If the consensus is that the list isn't viable, could we
perhaps agree to adjourn to some other list?
Prentiss Riddle
It is ridiculous; the closing of San Antonio Street (the block in front of the proposed Federal Courthouse - the former Intel building shell location) is already approved (when and if the Courthouse is funded and constructed); and now this proposed street closing.
The "restoration" of the downtown street grid is trumpeted and championed (true, by the City of Austin; not the State of Texas) on the one hand; and then important blocks of that same street grid are proposed for closure.

For those of you interested, the Austin Board of REALTORS released
their statistics last week for February 2008.
My monthly market analysis revealed that homes or condos priced above
$400k are suffering because there's less buyers in that price range.
At the same time, if you're in the market for a home priced below
$250k, you may have to compete since there's high demand for $150-250k
homes. http://tinyurl.com/yow2g4.

I'd be open to the idea, but getting a Forum together at this point in time (7 weeks from today until the Municipal Election) and getting the candidates committed to attending a Forum (they already are likely quite time constrained) would be a 'stretch' in my opinion. And I couldn't support making endorsements without getting to ask the candidates questions directly tied to the group's interests (and I guess the Austin Urbanists' interests are 'People interested in promoting urban development in Austin. If you like suburban parking codes and single-family-only development, this is probably not the place for you. If you like to see sustainable infill which increases residential density (the good way) and encourages pedestrian and other non-automobile travel, on the other hand, please come on in and participate.').
A possibility in my mind is for members of this group to attend a Forum already set to occur, and perhaps make endorsements from that. A City Council Candidate Forum will be hosted by the Austin Alliance for Public Transit (APT) and Austin Area Regional Transit (AART) on Thursday, April 3rd, in the Austin City Hall Council Chambers starting at 6:30 p.m. The 'focus' of the Forum will be on public and mass transit, and supporting land use. All 12 of the candidates that have filed have committed to attending this Forum; and there will be ample time for questions from the audience (although submitted to the Forum moderator on index cards, not directly asked of the candidates).
I attach the Flyer for this Forum.

Hey guys, is anybody interested in making endorsements for city council races, either as a group (named) or just as a list of names?

Up to the group. If we got a substantial number of
participants, I'd envision we could send a statement
to the Chronicle, Statesman, and a few TV outlets, and
publicize on the Burnt Orange Report and other
portals.

Yes. How do you envision publicizing the endorsements?
For those of you interested in sustainable, green, mixed-income,
mixed-use development, we are looking for passionate writers for an
interactive site about new urbanism that will launch end of
January/Early February. We can put an ad on Craigslist, but wanted to
get input from you on better resources.
The startup is volunteer so we can populate the upcoming site by the
launch date, but we may start paying on Helium for featured articles.

Subject: Fwd: National Art Project for Austin/East Austin
All,
I was asked to forward this unique opportunity for a community art project that has received national attention from the media in previous states. The artist chose Austin because of our openness and proactive dedication to principles of a sustainable environment. He'd prefer to build his project in East/NorthEast Austin to draw attention to the area, but is open to others. Whole Foods is one of the major sponsors.
Besides existing communities, Chestnut Commons and Mueller Austin were raised as viable partners. Please feel free to contact me or the artist's reps if you know of a developer, apartment community, or owner of a high-visibility home that would be interested in applying for this opportunity.
LOOKING FOR AN AUSTIN, TEXAS APARTMENT FRONT LAWN TO REPLACE WITH AN EDIBLE ESTATE {pass this on to anyone you know in austin!}
Now announcing EDIBLE ESTATE #5 will be located in AUSTIN, TEXAS and commissioned by ARTHOUSE at the JONES CENTER. We are searching for an APARTMENT {or condo} BUILDING FRONT LAWN to replace with an Edible Estate. details: http://www.fritzhaeg.com/garden/initiatives/edibleestates/austin.html contact: info@...
This southern U.S. regional prototype garden will be planted over the weekend of March 14-16, 2008. We will work in collaboration with the residents to develop a planting list and design. With local volunteers we will remove the entire lawn and install the Edible Estate. All costs associated with the first season of the garden will be covered. For maximum impact, influence, and contrast, the site will be selected based on these guidelines:
- The apartment or condo BUILDING should be on a residential street lined with groomed lawns. The front lawn should be flat, relatively pesticide free, with good sun exposure, very visible from the street with regular car traffic, and have few large trees or major landscaping.
- The estate OWNERS should be enthusiastic about the project and committed to continuing it as long as they live in the apartments. At least a few of the residents should be avid and knowledgeable gardeners, willing to engage others in a dialog about the Edible Estate. They will document the progress of the garden with journals and photos throughout the first year.
If you would like to nominate your Austin apartment or condo complex (and there is support from the other residents) send a few images of the building, lawn and street to info@...
Fritz Haeg: The Sundown Schoolhouse for Inner Austin Agriculture
January 26 - March 14, 2008
Schoolhouse Workshop: Saturday, January 26
Edible Estate Planting: March 14-16, 2008, location TBA
Conceived and led by architect Fritz Haeg, the Sundown Schoolhouse is a Los Angeles-based non-traditional educational environment for gently radical design, literary, performing and visual arts, all housed within a geodesic dome. It was founded on the premise that artists, designers, performers and writers should be powerful and active agents in society, engaging in a rich and complex dialog that extends to the outside world. With its goal to "reclaim the promise of art as the ultimate form of human freedom and expression in a society where it has become either trivialized as entertainment, hijacked as pure commodity, under-valued or even feared," the Schoolhouse seeks to present an alternate model of educational and artistic practice, one in which public interaction, physical connectedness, and responsiveness to place are valued above all else.
A mobile version of the Schoolhouse created specifically for the Austin community will take shape at Arthouse. A curriculum is currently being planned around the garden as an inspiring model for balanced relationships among art, natural resources and human need. A large geodesic tent within the Arthouse galleries will serve as the base site for a weekly series of free workshops, classes, clinics and seminars related to the art of gardening, sustainable food production, and the history of agriculture within the region. The Schoolhouse will be equipped with various materials provided by the teachers, all of whom will be drawn from the Austin community or the immediate region and will work closely with Haeg and the Arthouse staff. Visitors to the galleries will be able to spend time in the tent experimenting with these materials and studying information provided by the instructors, while documentation of previous projects will also be displayed in adjacent gallery areas. Also, a number of off-site projects with community groups and non-profit organizations that focus on art, environmental and agricultural issues are being developed, including the planting of an Edible Estate garden (replacing a front lawn with an artist-designed edible garden).

He should get some t-shirts made up already.
