Hi,

Can anyone tell me or confirm information on Peter D. Kelly or Peter
Kelly? The Whammo site that closed down a few years ago had something
on a Peter Kelly who was a drummer and I think played in several bands
downunder. Does anyone know what I'm talking about here?

Cheers,

Dear friends

Thanks to those who attended the Brackets & Jam night - we had a great
time and thanks so much to all those kind words of support from the
audience. You made it wonderful for us and we sincerely thank you for
that.

PLANNED BREAK FROM LIVE PERFORMANCE
Karmakult is now going into a chrysalis stage. Recording a new album,
with some line-up changes planned for the subsequent tour. We want to
assure fans that at the end of this cathartic process, Karmakult will
emerge bigger and better than it ever has been with a hot new lineup of
talent and an amazing arsenal of new songs and instrumentals that will
leave you gasping for more. The next album from Karmakult is already
simmering in the studio and planned for release later in 2009.

NEW SINGLE
Our single being released for ANZAC day is the crowd favourite "Rosemary".

"I wrote Rosemary after attending a Dawn Service with my dad a few
years back. They are always very emotional and touching services. I
was so inspired by the service and the imagery of the rosemary bush
that as soon as I got home I wrote it. I find my best writing comes
like that and I just call it channeling.... that's what it's like. I'm
very proud of our recorded version and James Overend's guitar solos
gave the song a very emotive edge" - Rendall Wagner.

The Art of Illusion
The second release from Karmakult and the transitional album that has
created the sound you now hear from the group.. Available in MP3 and
CD formats from CD Baby at the following link:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/rendall2

Aum
This is the collectable first album from Karmakult's humble
singer/songwriter "Rendall Wagner" - the album that started the whole
thing off. It is a rock album and contains the crowd favourites "No
Lies" and "Freedom of Mind". The songwriting and lyrics are there in
this debut album from the guy that has brought you Karmakult.
Although it's unmistakably a classic rock album, the name "Aum" and
the lyrical and musical content of songs such as "Freedom of Mind"
point to the future direction of the band, making the "Art of
Illusion" the natural progression and potential realised. Available
in MP3 and CD formats from CD Baby at the following link:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/rendall

Keep an ear out for us on the airwaves and keep checking the myspace
regularly for new demos from the new album.

Namaste

I did that because there are a lot of spammers using Y! Groups to send
rubbish not related to music.

More sophisticated message forums and social networking sites may have
contributed to that.

no. People just lost interest, found other groupls that are more
focused on their direct interest in music i think.

Yep ok we can give that a try if people want but there are spammers
who have signed up already so their posts would have to be put up with
until we work out who they are and delete them.

Well this is a group/community call so have your say on this one.

Hi Everybody,

Firstly this question is from stevenson2008 at the forums at
http://www.australianmusic.info/ so answers will be sent there but if you
want to get involved you can answer there yourself but I'm happy to pass on
the answer.

"Hello! I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of any
resources for finding government grants for recording demos for my band? Ive
checked on http://www.artsgrantsfinder.com and found heaps of good
government and local council grants etc but was wondering if there were any
private companies that funded demo recordings? "

Any ideas?

Geoff

Hi,

What do the members of this group think about all the messages having
to be approved before they get broadcast?

This used to be a very active and thriving group a number of years ago
when it first started, but has quietened down a lot in the past 2
years or so.

Do you think it's because of the messages being moderated that has
caused people to stop posting, or do you think that only messages from
new members should be moderated so that the owner can tell whether
they are legit musicians or not?

Would like to hear everyone's response. My vote would be to only
moderate messages from newcomers.

The Art of Men CD celebrates talented male artists from around the world,
delivering songs in a tapestry of different genres & styles of music
dedicated to messages empowering human equality, communication and vitality.
The compilation series is associated with the already critically acclaimed
Females On Fire series, produced by Warrior Girl Music, which celebrates
over 100 talented female artists from around the world through its three
double compilations. To properly create balance where balance is due,
Warrior Girl Music is very excited to announce a compilation dedicated to
magnificent male artists, equally looking for recognition, promotion and
elevation in the music industry.

The Art of Men CD invites male solo artists and male fronted bands to apply
to be on the compilation. (It's absolutely ok for female musicians to be in
the band, but the voice must be male). A panel of judges will choose the
best songs submitted to be selected for the compilation. Your song must be
positive, motivating and inspiring and embraces global and human issues that
we can all relate to and be inspired by. Promotion and distribution are
directed to music supervisors (film and television), music publishers,
national music conferences & seminars, record labels, the media (print and
radio), producers, and artists looking for songs. The CD is a perfect
vehicle for artists to access the music industry, the media and make
potential long lasting business relationships for their music. Retail
distribution includes direct sales through the Warrior Girl Music Store and
distributors in the U.S, Canada and Australia.

Submission deadline: July 15, 2008

Hi,

I was wondering if somebody on this group would be able to give me
some insight on this matter.

My band d-wizz 2.0 has recently been rehearsing a new number called
"Magic Carpet" which sounds very similar to Ratcat's hit song "That
Ain't Bad" in its chord structures. For a bit of laugh during the
chorus I started singing the 'Ye-e-e-eh I love you' bit as well and we
decided to leave it in for recording and playing live in future.

Now, the question is: if we were to make this song public would there
be any breach of copyright if we included that bit in our own song?
Would Simon Day need to get a writing credit on the song as well?

Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Dario Western

SOUND OF FAILURE
Experimental Music in a Post-digital Era

We live in an era of failure. On the global stage, the President of
the most powerful country on earth has overseen thousands of deaths in
two failed wars. In the third world the stench of poverty seeps
through the pores of humanity in the guise of genocidal skirmishes,
starvation and disease. Fundamentalists of all creeds goad each other
like contestants on some new deadly reality TV show. And the optimism
of the '90s is washed away in a tide of apathy, indifference and
hopelessness.

So where does this leave culture? If art is holding up a mirror to
society, how long before the mirror shatters in sympathetic resonance
to the horror it beholds?

A couple of months ago Don't Look Gallery put out an open call to
sound artists to propose a piece for an event called the `Sound of
Failure'. From dozens of responses, 20 artists have been chosen to
perform at Petersham Bowling Club on Saturday August 25, or to install
works at Don't Look Gallery, Dulwich Hill over the weekend of August
25/26.

These works generally employ technological failure, both as a
euphemism for the state of the world, but also as a way of exposing,
exploring and problematising the digital façade. These artists have
attempted transcend the small rectangular screens and the latest
Microsoft releases, opting instead to look at unintended consequences
of technology – when it misbehaves or just gives up the goat.

Some artists use humour. Starella, for instance, juxtaposes
`instruments' such as `old wine bottles' with digital technology and
lyrics written on the backs of beer coasters. The failure in her
musical sound comes from spending her life slipping through the gaps
of every system she has known: family; society, and professional
systems. In her performances she feels her way through drunken rants
and musically attempts to determine what went wrong.

Others employ the literal failure of the technology itself. Tom Hall,
a sound artist from Brisbane, uses the degenerate sounds formed from
the destruction of flimsy CD media combined with the
glitch/skip/malfunction from ageing and damaged CD players. These form
the basis of a live performance that combine in a progressive and
layered manner, juxtaposing the usual frustration experienced when one
strikes this inferior malfunction.

A detailed program is available from http://soundoffailure.com.

   PRESS RELEASE

A collaboration between artists from three countries – India, Pakistan and the
US, brings to the market a unique album that announces the debut of San
Francisco based Indian singer – Devika. Music for this self-titled album has
been composed by Shahi (Shehzad Hasan), a music director and producer whose work
includes songs such as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s Mann Ki Lagan and Laal (from the
movie Paap). He was also one of the members of Pakistan’s first ever pop band -
Vital Signs. Additional compositions are by Anshuman Chandra (an upcoming
composer who composed music for the film French Fries and Curry) and Noor Lodhi
& Manesh Judge (music producers of international award winning music for the
movie Maya).

The production started with rough compositions being penned & recorded in
Shahi’s studio in Pakistan as well as Noor’s studio in San Francisco. These were
then transmitted to the other side over the Internet -- enhanced, decorated and
re-transmitted back and forth until the music, compositions & vocals were rock
solid. The result was a truly a global production – bringing together different
artists, styles, recording & production capabilities from different parts of the
world.

Devika is well versed in Hindustani classical music – having learned under the
supervision of several great teachers including Mr Chandra Rao (student of
famous violinist Dr. N. Rajam). She is currently a student of Ustad Shafqat Ali
Khan & Ustad Sukhawat Ali Khan.
Devika’s music career started in the early years of her life. She performed
frequently through high school (Modern School, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi),
using both classical and popular styles to capture her audience. During her
undergraduate study years at Georgetown University, Washington DC, she
experimented with a fusion of Indian classical music & electronic music. She
also teamed up with Holmes Ives and performed vocals for the album titled
‘Satyriasis,’ whose tracks have been remixed numerous times.

The theme of her self titled debut album is romance and every song carries it
through. The songs span a variety of different styles including lounge, club,
easy listening, Punjabi and film. The goal of the album is to demonstrate the
versatility of vocal performance and to create a collection where any listener
can easily find something to connect with.
The music video for the album was shot in several stunning and exotic
locations in Hyderabad and Bombay, including the Husain Sagar Lake at dawn.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Sound of Failure is an audio event sponsored by Don't Look
Experimental New Media Gallery of Dulwich Hill (Sydney, Australia) to
explore the concept of `failure' in a post-digital era. In this era
sound artists must look beyond the digital facade (the `graphics user
interface' and the like) to represent the times in which we live
(times that are politically and socially, themselves, littered with
failures).

In the '90s, digital technologies like the CD player made the `Glitch'
aesthetic possible, which, according to Kim Cascone `was developed in
part as a result of the immersive experience of working in
environments suffused with digital technology: computer fans whirring,
laser printers churning out documents, the sonification of
user-interfaces, and the muffled noise of hard drives. But more
specifically, it is from the "failure" of digital technology that this
new work has emerged'.

But what, in this era of `Failure', is possible beyond the glitch? How
do we exploit the possibilities beyond the digital façade without just
reverting back to the seemingly primitive world of the analogue?

We are now seeking submissions from musicians who attempt to address
this question in their works. To read the full brief, and to submit a
proposal, please go to http://soundoffailure.com

The Sound of Failure will be held at the Petersham Bowling Club on
August 25. For more information about Don't Look Gallery please go to

Dear Music Lovers,
Hope all are well out there ? Keep the music on,
don't put the TV on,
just keep the CD Player on or sound system.
I just returned from a Perth Area tour with "CHAIN " and it was great, managed
to help
Matt Taylor collect water in buckets at his place in Perth on Sunday as it
teamed down with
rain "all day and all of the night", reminded me of the time "Chain " played
with the "Kinks
" and "John Mayall and the Bluebreakers " at Festival Hall in Melbourne in about
1973. What
a line-up "Chain" followed by the "Kinks" followed by John Mayall, bit of a
mis-match there
somewhere, but the 'Kinks " sounded great, just like their early hits.
You should put your Television on this Saturday night the 21st. April to SBS as
our
wonderful singing sensation Matt Taylor is on "Rockwiz" at 9-15pm.
The Perth gigs had a few visitors we haven't seen for a while like the master
piano player
Bob Patience and Dave Hole who had just got back from playing in Russia, great
to see
these guys as they are fabulous musicians. Hi Jamey.
"CHAIN" are playing at the Eumundi Hotel on Saturday, the 5th. of May, which is
always a
great gig and sound and vibe. "Chain" are playing at the Broadbeach Blues
Festival on the
19th. of May, last band on that night after Eugene ( hideaway ) Bridges.( Hi
Nene ). Kevin
Borich is
playing the same stage at 5pm. that day.

The Illustrious McCoy Tyner, who I named my Son after is playing with a Trio
setting on
the 12th. May along with Dave Liebman on Saxes and the Pharoah Sanders Quartet
at the
Hamer Hall in Melbourne, which I am going to as these guys are the MASTERS of
Improvisation and I love 'em.
Hope you can come to the CHAIN Gigs ( hi Trev ). Love to all, Barry ( lil goose
) Harvey.

Dear friends

Following our successful performance at Peats Ridge Festival the new
CD is here!

Over two years in the making - 'The Art of Illusion'. On this long
awaited follow-up I've fused Eastern music elements (Indian/Turkish)
with progressive hard rock.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Excerpt from 'The Rendall Wagner Band'

In generating a fusion of progressive rock and eastern music, the
Rendall Wagner Band lures the listener into a trance with the haunting
sounds of the flute alongside timeless eastern rhythms with pieces
like The Mammoth and Io. This is also how the Rendall Wagner Band
weaves its magic through songs such as Sugar Sweet, Waiting and The
Art of Illusion, mixing haunting melodies with heavy rock riffs
through the high-volume power chords of guitar, bass and drums
reminiscent of the hard rock of Led Zeppelin. In moving from the
margins to the mainstream, the Rendall Wagner Band blends eastern
sounds of Turkey, Egypt and India using the baglama, darrabuka,
harmonium and drone alongside more mainstream rock tunes through songs
such as Drawn, Embrace and Because I Love You.

As a singer/songwriter, Rendall Wagner is clearly influenced by his
Indian and Australian ancestry referenced in his lyrics that move from
a reflection on the tragedy of World War I and Vietnam to a reflection
on the destruction of humanity and the age of Kali. Meaningful lyrics
about life, love and even the music industry also form part of the
eclectic composition of Wagner's music.
Deirdre Howard
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Would you like to hear it or find out more? Sample it online -
website below.

'The Art of Illusion' along with the debut album 'Aum'
can be purchased online via Paypal, retail outlets (see website for
stockists) or directly at gigs. See the official website for more
details.

More importantly, I hope we can catch up sometime soon and you get to
see my amazing new band. Tour details on web and in local gig guides.

Could you be thinking of Billy Field's "You weren't in Love with me"
not a band but very Australian released in 1981

Standing on the outside, I don't know where I'm going to
But I do know-ow just one thi-ing, and that is it's over with you

I've been very lonely, I did not think I could go on
I was caught - in mem'ries-ies, and dreams I should have won

Blind Freddy knew that, a blind man could see
I was in love wi-ith you, but you weren't in love with me

Suppose I'll have to keep it, keep it inside, I don't know why
Well I know, that it won't change it, but baby, it helps if I cry

Blind Freddy knew that, a blind man could see
I was in love wi-ith you (in love with you)
But you weren't in love with me

It used to be so perfect (so perfect)
It used to be so perfect (so perfect)
In lovin' you (used to be so perfect lovin' you)
It used to be so perfect, it used to be so perfect
In lovin' you (used to be so perfect)

So now I'm standing on the outside, I don't know where I'm going to
But I do know just one thi-ing, and that is it's over with you

Blind Freddy knew that, a blind man could see
I was in love wi-ith you (in love with you)
But you weren't in love with me

Blind Freddy knew that, yes he knew it
A blind man could see, yes he could, yes he could
I was in love wi-ith you (in love with you)
But you weren't in love with me (you weren't in love wi-ith me)
My baby's not in lo-hove (you weren't in love with me)
Weren't in love, weren't in love (you weren't in love with me)
My baby's not in love (you weren't in love wi-ith me)
Weren't in love, weren't in love (you weren't in love with me)
Weren't in love, weren't in love (you weren't in love with me)

Hi

The National Film & Sound Archive has established Sounds of Australia,

to invite members of the ausmusic group to share their
passion and knowledge by nominating recordings for the first public
listings on the registry to be announced in June this year. Recordings
are eligible if they are at least 20 years old and made in Australia
or by Australians. Nominations close on 31st March.
