Anyone who wants to keep up with the ThruHikers
from this and previous years may want to get on Fanny
Pack's email list. He just emailed that the following
99ers summited recently: Groove, Creeper, Semper Fi
Drew, Sy, Magnolia, Rico, Dogman, Fleishman, BioHazard,
Holly, Dooley, Hillbilly and Too Hot to Handle. Soon to
summit are Yogi, Citrus and Binks. Paddler has summited,
too. If you want a copy of the emails Fanny Pack has
sent recently, email me at coosa_ga@... with

at_viking invited me to join and although I
haven't been on the at, I spent a bunch of time with
Rainmaker on the pct this summer. He raved about his time
spent on Trail Chat so I figured it was time and here I
am.

Did 600 miles of the pct this summer and plan on
doing 300 or so each summer until I reach Canada. I was
new to backpacking when I started the pct. Done lots
of mountaineering but hadn't doneany long distance
backpacking. Loved it!!! My life is in a wonderfully settled
place that has me doing the pct in pieces rather than
one long swoop. It was a surprise to me that the
planned 6 months of this summer were shortened to 3 .
Just didn't want to be away from home any longer.
Learned an enormous amount on the trail (lots of it from
Rainmaker), and discovered that long distance hikers are
great people. So here I am. It may take me a while to
remember to check in the evening chat room gatherings. I'm
glad to be here. Namaste, m (Maggot)
On the top of Mt Oglethorpe is a monument to
James Oglethorpe, the founder of the State of Georgia.
It is a white marble obelisk about 30 feet high
which has suffered at the hands of vandals over the
years. There is no known 'strictly legal' way to get to
it. If you take Monument Rd off GA Hwy 136 to its end
at a gate, (5 miles, last part gravel) with a no
tresspassing sign, you are a few hundred feet from it. It is
just outside the fence around an FAA antenna site. An
alternate route reportedly exists (or existed) by taking
Cove Rd out of Jasper and turning left on CCC Rd.
These are dirt roads and both either become impassible
or seem to end in someone's yard, per the Quad Map.
The CCC Rd is probably blocked near the FAA
site.

There used to be a phone number to call if you wanted
to see the monument posted on the fence gate but it
has been destroyed by vandals, too.

If anyone
finds out how to visit the monument, please notify me
at coosa_ga@...

Thanks, Coosa

OK, that's it...no more procrastinating. Next
year, it's PCT time. I'll accompany the Rainmaker(to
ensure a wet trek) to California and start at Sonora
Pass. Since I don't believe in rushing the hike, we
should amble our way north at a respectable speed of,
say, molasses running down a gentle slope! Don't want
to miss anything by power hiking. From what I've
been told, it's going to be at least as good as my
AT98 thruhike. If it's not, I'll get a refund, right?

then return it to you. Trust me; this is gonna be fun!
