In my book Formation of the Tree of Life I examine an interesting series of correspondences mentioned in the Sefer Yetzirah and the Zohar that associate the ten sefirot and the 22 Hebrew letters with various parts of the human anatomy. These correspondences effectively transform the Tree of Life diagram into a quite detailed anatomical blueprint of the Universal Adam.
Basically, the Zohar gives us the sefirotic attributions (constituting the basic physical structure of the Supernal Adam) while the Sefer Yetzirah gives us the pathway correspondences (comprising His more detailed physical components and internal organs).
The Zohar tells us that the three highest sefirot--Keter, Hockmah, and Binah--represent the three hollows of the 'cranium' (or 'skull') of the Universal Adam, or in other words, they are said to collectively represent his head (and brain).
Similarly, in the Zohar the lower sefirot (from Hesed to Yesod) are assigned to the arms, legs, torso, and sexual organ of the Universal Adam, as follows...
==============================
Keter/Hockmah/Binah = Threefold Skull/Head
Hesed = Right Arm
Geburah = Left Arm
Tifaret = Torso
Netzah = Right Leg
Hod = Left Leg
Yesod = Sexual Organ
==============================
As it happens, these correspondences complement perfectly the correspondences found in the Sefer Yetzirah where the seven Double letter pathways are assigned to the facial features of the Universal Adam, and the twelve Elemental letters to His hands, feet, and the internal organs of his body.
What does this tell us?
The logical conclusion to draw is that the seven Double letter 'facial feature' correspondences need to be positioned upon the head of the Supernal Adam, at the top of the Tree of Life diagram. There is a logical/intuitive way to position these correspondences amongst the pathways that cover the skull--i.e. as per my diagram (attached).
Unfortunately, the original Double letter correspondences are lost to us because of the corruption (or deliberate concealment) that has entered into the text of the Sefer Yetzirah over the centuries. The Saadia and Long versions approximate most closely my own systematically determined arrangement (as displayed in the attached diagram)...
===========================================
Long/Saadia...............My Version
===========================================
1. Bayt : Mouth...........1. Bayt : Mouth
2. Gimel : Right Eye......2. Gimel : Right Eye
3. Dalet : Left Eye.......3. Dalet : Left Eye
4. Kaf : Right Nostril....4. Kaf : Right Nostril
5. Peh : Right Ear........5. Tav : Left Nostril
6. Raysh : Left Ear.......6. Peh : Right Ear
7. Tav : Left Nostril.....7. Raysh : Left Ear
===========================================
The only difference between the above two lists is that the Tav correspondence (Left Nostril) in the Long/Saadia version has in my version been shifted up two places. For this reason I believe it is possible that my 'corrected' version of facial feature correspondences (above right) is possibly the true list of correspondences that were indended by the original author of the Sefer Yetzirah. It is possible that the authors of the Saadia and Long versions chose to conceal the true attributions because these correspondences can be used to unlock the secret esoteric pathway system of the Tree of Life (as detailed in my book).
The Twelve Elemental Letters
Similarly, the twelve Elemental letter correspondences (i.e. hands, feet, and internal organs) need to be positioned upon the body of the Universal Adam, in the lower portion of the Tree diagram, below His head.
For example, the sefirah Hesed is said by the Zohar to be the 'right arm' of the Universal Adam, and therefore the Elemental letter corresponding to the 'right hand' should be associated with a pathway that extends from Hesed (the right arm).
The sefirah Hod is said to be the 'left leg' of the Universal Adam, and therefore the Elemental letter whose correspondence is the 'left foot' should be associated with a pathway that is attached to Hod (the left leg).
All the twelve elemental letters need to be positioned amongst the seven lower sefirot because they represent the lower physical attributes of the body of the Universal Adam.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way of determining the true Elemental letter physical body (to pathway) correspondences that I have yet discovered. The twelve Elemental pathway correspondences in my diagram are for the most part guesswork. The basic Elemental path arrangement itself is based on the Sefer Yetzirah's instructions on positioning the twelve 'diagonal boundaries' (i.e. the twelve zodiacal signs).
Blessings,
Patrick.
