The first part of Asphodel's Yule Ritual will take place at Cauldron
Farm on Saturday, December 19.
This year's ritual is centered around the sacred tree and the gift of
fire received (some say stolen) from the gods. Please arrive at the
farm by 3:00 PM to make decorations for the tree. This is an important
part of the ritual, so please don't skip it! Materials will be
provided so all you have to do is show up and have fun. We will
adjourn to the field and proceed with the rest of the ritual at
sunset. Potluck will follow, so bring your tastiest holiday foods to
share.
The second part of the Yule Ritual happens at Cauldron Farm on Sunday,
January 3 (Twelfth Night) at 4 PM.
We will burn the Yule tree in recognition of the gift of fire and to
send our wishes and intentions out into the worlds. Feel free to bring
whatever (actual, not fake!) evergreens you may have had in your own
homes to burn in the bonfire as well. Although we will not be having
the usual dinner potluck, we will have cider, hot cocoa and cookies
afterward. Feel free to bring any leftover holiday treats to share.
.
If you have any questions, please contact the friendly Cauldron Farm
house elf at lokisthrowpillow@... or 978-928-4198.
Blessings!

This year's Asphodel Samhain rite will be Sunday, Nov. 1, at 5 pm. Again, that's
5 pm. Please try to arrive between 4:30 and 5. The theme will be the Tibetan
Book of the Dead. Please bring warm clothing and potluck for afterwards.
We will be holding Samhain ritual rain or shine, and the way it looks right now,
it looks like rain. Bring umbrellas, flashlights, and good boots. There will be
some tarped areas - the Feast for the Dead, etc. - but since you'll be moving
from area to area, we suggest umbrellas. Also, do bring offerings for your Dead
to place on the table afterwards.
See you there!

Just letting people know once more that, despite the website error, Mabon this
year will be this Sunday at 4 pm. Please bring potluck, and if you're staying
for the Wild Hunt in the evening, bring warm clothes, good shoes, and (if you
intend to be a Hound) a flashlight. We will have red gels to tape over the
flashlights, but we are not providing them. If you're prey or fire-tender and
you'd like to lend a trusted Hound your flashlight, great.
For those who haven't been to the Wild Hunt before, that's all right - all will
be explained. Bring a flashlight anyway.
Day ritual will be around 4-6. Evening ritual, which may not be
young-child-appropriate, will be from 7 on. There will be a break between them
where people can hang out, or do errands, or whatever. Again, please bring
potluck. Lots of potluck. This is a harvest feast.
-Raven Kaldera
This year's Asphodel Lammas will be at Cauldron Farm at 2 pm tomorrow -
Saturday. Please bring food and drink for potluck.
Thank you,

Asphodel's Summer Solstice ritual is tomorrow (Saturday) at noon - all our
Solstice rites are at high noon. Please bring potluck, bug spray, and especially
liquids. We are hoping for good weather. The ritual will be run by the Queen,
and then we will move a stone into position around the labyrinth, as usual.
See you there!
This Sunday, the 17th, with Lady Ruth, at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Watertown MA.Noon
to whenever we get done touring it. Meet in the parking lot between 11:30 and
noon. Potluck picnic afterwards, down Rt. 20 on Waltham Green.

Since this field trip is outdoors and requires good weather, if it is pouring
rain we will postpone it.

The First Kingdom Church of Asphodel will be holding our yearly Beltane
celebration on May 8-10. Fee will be $20, and general information is available
here on the website:
http://www.churchofasphodel.org/beltane/index.html
This year, we will be creating a modern version of an old Roman ceremony.
Everyone is encouraged to bring some small item - small enough to hold in your
fist - wrapped in cloth. A wooden box will be opened, and all items will be
placed within it, one at a time. As you place your item in the box, ask the Gods
to bless and keep you until next year. Then the box will be closed and placed in
a stone-lined hole in the earth until next year, when it will be reopened and
folk will each take out one of the hidden secret items as their omen for the
year. So please think about what you'd like to offer! There will also be food
and drink offerings places within in sealed jars for the Gods.
See you then!

It's that time again! Beltane is coming, and the First Kingdom Church of
Asphodel is looking for a couple to embody the Green Man and May Queen for our
weekend-long Beltane camping event. The info for the event is here:
http://www.churchofasphodel.org/beltane/index.html
and the parameters for who and what we want to embody the Green Man and May
Queen are here:
http://www.churchofasphodel.org/beltane/mayqueen.html
If you're interested, please email Raven at cauldronfarm@.... You have
to absolutely commit to it; if you say you'll come, please come! You'll both get
in free. If you cannot come for the whole weekend, it's all right; we only need
you from about 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday. The first couple to email us and
absolutely commit (and who fits all parameters) gets it!
This year's Beltane campout will be taking place a week later than usual, so you
can probably get to your own Beltane and still get to this one! It will be May
8-10.
Thank you,

The College of Brigantia will be sponsoring a class in Basic Tarot on March 22
at 1 p.m. It will be held at Raven and Joshua's office at BackNTouch Wellness
Center, 244 Walton St. in Fitchburg MA. Cost is $5. If you have a favorite deck
that reasonably follows the meanings of the classic Tarot, please bring it.
There will be decks available for those who don't have them yet.
The Asphodel Ostara Ritual will be held at Cauldron Farm on Saturday, March
21st. Please bring food and drink for the potluck afterwards, and a packet of
seeds to plant in th ritual. Egg dyeing will start at 2 p.m. and the ritual
proper will begin at 3 p.m.

Imbolc is Sunday, Feb. 1 at 6 pm at Cauldron Farm. Please bring
potluck. The theme is Brigid's Day and creativity, so if possible
bring a symbol of craft you do to place on the altar for blessing,
and/or a poem, song, or story to entertain people with.
Also please bring a shovel to create parking spaces in the snow, as
the denizens of the farm have either been ill, busy, or gone, and as
we don't know how many are coming, we don't know how many spaces will
be needed.
Thank you, and happy midwinter,
-Raven Kaldera
Dear folks:
Due to the awesome work of our Clerk, Asphodel is no longer hosted on
the Cauldron Farm site (www.cauldronfarm,com), and indeed has its own
page at:
http://www.churchofasphodel.org
We also own kingdomofasphodel.org, which redirects automatically to
the same page.
Events for Asphodel are listed on the Asphodel site. Cauldron Farm
will be listing all events held at the Farm, with the Asphodel events
marked as such. If you want to find out what's happening with
Asphodel, please check that site.
Many of the other parts of the Cauldron Farm website have also been
moved, to new sites like ravenkaldera.org, paganbookofhours.org,
asphodelpress.com, northernshamanism.org, and holisticbodyworking.com.
We are very pleased with the effective Internet separation of Cauldron
Farm and Asphodel, as far too many people haven't yet got the idea
that these are two different organizations who happen to have some
overlapping membership. Now all these things are separate entities.
Joshua is still checking for broken internal links and such, but the
basic surgical split has now happened. Thank you all for your patience
during the confusing intermediate period.

Dear Folks:
For those not on the Kingdom-only list, the news is this: We have
power back at Cauldron Farm! (Huzzah for hot showers!) Therefore,
people who plan to come need only bring potluck.
We are planning on holding Yule as indicated tomorrow at 4:30 pm. The
snow will supposedly let up tonight, and tomorrow may actually be a
nice day. Sunday will storm again, so we have a small window of
opportunity. Whether we do ritual in the back field or the living room
will depend on the number of people who come and the condition of the
path to the field. We'll decide that tomorrow. We will be shoveling
out some parking spaces, but there will still be very few - car pool!
and bring a shovel.
If anyone has a bag of charcoal briquettes left over from the summer,
please bring me some for the ritual!
Thank you, and stay warm,
-Raven Kaldera
Dear Folks,
So things have been fairly uncomfortable here at the farm. On
Wednesday our washing machine died. On Thursday the Queen's jeep
dropped its transmission, leaving us with one car. Then, of course, on
Thursday night the big storm hit. Some of you are, like us, out of
power. We have no phone (and cells don't work well at our house, and
can't be recharged), no electric, which means no heat and water.
Fortunately we have Esmeralda the woodstove, which heats most of the
house, and means that we can cook. We have more candles than the local
Catholic diocese. We are doing better than many of our neighbors,
except for the rich ones who have generators.
However, our street was hit bad. Fallen trees everywhere. Power lines
dangling. Eight poles broken off and shattered. Transformers dangling
from tree branches. It will be many days before we get power again.
Send your good wishes to Christine and Jesse down the street who had
trees fall on their house, ripping off the junction box and taking out
the kitchen window.
But we are having Yule anyway! If nothing else, we need fellowship
more than ever now. We can keep the place warm, the back field is no
different (well, except for some fallen trees which we can BURN!) and
the toilet does flush if you pour a bucket of water into it. (The old
colonial well in the basement won't supply potable water, but it works
great for buckets to flush the toilet.) We are asking people who come
to bring (at least some of) the following things, however, to make our
lives easier.
1) Warm coats, boots, etc. We will be walking to the back and it will
probably be cold. This assumes that there will not be two feet of snow
happening before 4 pm Saturday.
2) Potluck. We were going to make a big feast, but are cutting our
plans back. Especially bring drinkables. Apple cider for wassail, etc.
And real food.
3) Light sources that are not open candle flames, especially if they
are hangable. Candles in tall jars will work, but propane or battery
lanterns are even better. We have fire heat, it's just dark.
4) Paper plates, cups, disposable silverware, etc. Dishwashing is
difficult with limited water and no hot water.
5) A patient and cheerful attitude. We are all doing the best we can.
Communicating with us will be difficult, but not impossible. The King
is currently making a visit to Lizzie's house and she is generously
allowing us to use her email. However, since we have no phone or
Internet access, please email Lady Ruth at fetish666@... and
pass messages to her. She will be getting hold of us regularly. (For
best cell reception, one has to walk to the crossroads.) We won't let
these hardships stop us from having Yule, and you shouldn't either.
May the season bless you,
-Raven Kaldera Regis

Dear Folk of Asphodel and Honored Outlanders,
Our yearly Yule ritual will be on Saturday the 20th this year, at 4:30
pm. All are welcome! Bring your friends! Please bring warm clothing
and good boots, as the first part of the rite will be outside.
Please bring potluck! Any potluck is good, of course; we won't turn
anything down, but this year's food theme is Scandinavian, so if folks
want to go the extra mile they can look in stores and bakeries for
Scandinavian-style pastries, cookies, breads, and cheeses. Beverages
of any sort will always be welcome as well - there is no such thing
as too much apple cider.
Blessings to you all, and a prosperous Yule!

Dear Asphodelians and Honored Outlanders,
This year's annual Yule Open House will take place on Sunday Dec. 14th
from 1 pm to 9 pm at Bones And Flowers, 980 Main St. in Worcester. It
is free, although potluck donations are encouraged. Free classes will
be held from 1 pm to 5 pm; they will be announced soon. Social time
with potluck will happen from 5 to 7, and at 7 the choir will do their
annual Yule concert. Please come and listen to your favorite Yule
songs and support the choir, and have a good time.
We are currently taking offers for teaching classes; email Us offlist
if you have a suggestion.

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
For those who don't know, that holiday celebrates all the
transgendered people who have been killed by violence (or in some
cases, driven to commit suicide) because of who and what they were.
This holiday was started because the numbers of such violent murders
are an exceptionally high percentage of such a small minority. People
want to see us dead, and many of them are willing to try it themselves.
These are my ancestors, all blood aside. More are killed every month.
This is Wrong, a Great Wrong. We may think that we live in more
liberal states - some of us at least - but even here in Mass where I
live, the murderer of a transwoman told the jury that his disgust at
his victim's nature was justification for killing her. The jury let
him off.
Tonight and tomorrow, there will be memorial services in four
different places in this state. The Boston and Northampton services
will be tonight; Worcester and Springfield tomorrow. These are not
transgender-only events. They are for anyone who has trans friends,
who feels that this is Wrong.
If you cannot make it to any communal event, then do it on your own.
Light a candle, perhaps at 8 or 9 tonight or tomorrow. Tell the Powers
that Be that this is Wrong, and it needs to be changed. Put out a
plate of food for the Dead. Play music for them. Say their names.
(The best resource for the current list of names of the trans Dead is
the Remembering Our Dead website: http://rememberingourdead.org.)
If you are in Asphodel, you will be well acquainted with a number of
transgendered people. Some may actually be your friends. Keep in mind
that all those transfolk beaten to death in alleys, stabbed to death
in their bedrooms, might have been any of us. They could still be us,
and we live every day knowing that.
If all goes well and our household is recovered from the plague
tomorrow, we will be at the Worcester memorial ceremony, and I will
sing the new song that I have written for the Dead of my tribe. (I'd
like to be able to post a mp-3 of it for free on my website; if there
is anyone local to me with a working laptop that will record me
singing, let me know. It's my gift to the living community as well as
the Dead.)
In honor of the fallen,
-Raven Kaldera

know what is happening. If you prefer to show up unannounced, you take
your chances.

Just a reminder for those who are interested that there is an Expo of
Pagan groups tomorrow in Hadley, MA. Different groups were encouraged
to come and show off their stuff. Asphodel has a table, the choir will
be singing, Asphodel Press will be showing off (but not selling) our
books, and the King is making a fold-out display of what Asphodel is
all about.
For those who are interested in dropping by, the Expo is from 2:30 to
5:30 at InSpirit Common, on Rt. 9 in Hadley. To get there, you get to
Rt. 9 by whatever means you can, and go through Amherst center,
doglegging around the Common, and then continue into Hadley where Rt.
9 becomes one long shopping strip. After the Hampshire Mall goes by on
your left, start looking for InSpirit Common on your right.
The choir will probably sing fairly early in the time period. We will
be doing a Samhain set.
Thanks,

College of Brigantia Classes
November 2008
The College of Brigantia presents the beginning of this year's fall
lineup of classes! We welcome you to come and learn with us.
All classes are $5. November's classes to be held at Back-N-Touch, 244
Walton St. Fitchburg MA. Preregistration is required to hold your
space, as there are limited spaces and you will have to be let into
the building specially. Please bring a comfortable folding chair to
sit in, or a comfortable floor cushion. For more information, call
Raven at 978-928-4198 or email at cauldronfarm@....
Sunday November 2:
3-5 p.m. Ghosts and Ancestors: Working with the Dead
In this time of the thin veils between the worlds, come learn about
ghosts, hauntings, and how to handle them. When is it all right to
bother the Dead, and which Dead should you bother? Does it take an
expert to get random spirits out of your home? Just because they're
Dead, does that mean that they're smart? We'll be putting together an
altar with pictures and/or names of our beloved Dead, so bring those
if you have them.
7-9 p.m. Dark Magic and Shadow Spellwork
Ever wish you could have attended Harry Potter's Defense Against the
Dark Arts classes? Well, this is probably the closest you'll get in
this world. We'll discuss dark spells throughout the centuries and how
to recognize them, dismantle them, and ward them off. We'll also
discuss the issues of grey-area ethical magic, and the attitudes of
various spiritual systems towards where those lines should be drawn.
Come with an open mind and perhaps a story of your own!
Sunday November 9:
3-5 p.m. Magical Architecture
Have you ever dreamed of building a Pagan temple? This workshop will
discuss sacred architecture the world over, bringing it home to modern
small-scale builders who want to create their own sacred spaces. We'll
learn about the spiritual aspects of internal spaces, the elemental
nature of different building materials, and how to create sacredness
in existing spaces. No knowledge of building is required.
7-9 p.m. Mythical Pathworking
Myths and legends are more than just stories. They are guides to the
grooves worn in the Universe by divine will and human attention. Myths
can be used, in their own way, as spells to change your life and the
world. This practice is called Mythical Pathworking, and it is a way
of dancing with the Universe instead of working against it. Bring your
favorite myths and legends, or just your own story, and learn to use
the sacred stories to heal your life.
Sunday, November 16
3-5 p.m. Magical Symbol Systems
Learn the lore of thousands of years of magical alphabets, signs, and
sigils! What do all those bizarre markings mean? Are they ancient
mystical symbols, or something from a modern computer game? We'll also
be making our own sigils for protection, prosperity, and peace.
7-9 p.m. Multicultural Sensitivity in Pagan Groups
Part of growing your Pagan group is being able to welcome all sorts
of people, not just a small homogeneous bunch of your friends.
Sometimes conflicts will come up because people grew up in different
context with different rules, and the best thing that you can do as a
Pagan leader (or just as a responsible group member) is to identify
these blocks and learn to interpret people to each other. This
workshop will focus on what happens specifically in Pagan groups when
people come together from different backgrounds, both religious and
cultural, and how to make it all work out.
Starting January 2: Online Brigantia Class: The Anthropology of Shamanism!
If you'd like to sign up for this class, join the Yahoo group
"brigantiaonline"!
Asphodel Press, the Pagan religion press of our Kingdom, now has a
spiffy new website and its own url! Check it out.
http://www.asphodelpress.com/
We now offer 21 books and a CD, with another half dozen books and a
Tarot deck on our desk in progress. Praise can be laid at the feet of
Joshua, who has done a huge amount of work on both the books and the
site. We've managed to do this as a non-profit writer's cooperative,
on a very small budget. We are beginning to acquire a reputation as a
place to get quality Pagan religious writing. We hope to see many more
books, on a variety of subjects, in the future.
Send it around!

This year Asphodel will again be offering up its yearly informal free
Pagan gathering, Kingdom Weekend, which celebrates the anniversary of
Asphodel's creation in 1999. Kingdom Weekend is a four-day event, from
Friday the 29th of August to Monday September 1st. Please feel free to
forward this announcement wherever it seems appropriate.
People who have been to Asphodel events before, and know the drill of
parking in the north field and bringing your camping gear down, may
come and go as they choose during the weekend, and stay for any part
of it. People who have never been to Asphodel events must contact
Raven at Cauldron Farm (cauldronfarm@...) and let him know
when you will arrive, so that you can be walked through the process.
There is no monetary fee for this event. The fee is paid in food.
Please bring lots of good food and drink, so that we can guarantee
plenty for everyone. There will be two feasts - Saturday and Sunday
nights - so plan accordingly.
This year, the Queen is also requesting that anyone who is moved to do
so please bring a bag of gravel or 3/4 stone with them - the bags are
only a few bucks, and we have one wet area left on the path after the
bridge that we'd like to see made less soggy. There is also a plan
underway to do some building of shelters around the fire this year, so
bring work gloves if you'd like to help out with that.
There will be a Militia Muster on Saturday at 4 pm, and various
classes on Saturday and Sunday. Court will occur afterwards, during
the feast, and the Asphodel Choir will serenade. The main ritual will
be Sunday afternoon. Those who would like to give a class, see a
particular class given, or help with the ritual should email Raven.
Thank you all,

This year's Asphodel Lammas Ritual will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August
3 at Cauldron Farm. Please bring potluck. It is especially important,
on this holiday, to bring real food and not processed corporate food.
If you can't cook or bake, get something from a bakery, or small
family restaurant, or natural foods store, or even just edible
produce. Anything but a can of Pringles!
Folks who want to camp over the night before or after are welcome to
do so; just let the folks at the Farm know.

The Hestia Guild is taking a field trip to the Nashoba County Winery
to pick peaches. Anybody is welcome to come along, whether you're
interested in the guild or not.
We will meet at the winery at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 2 (the day
before the Lammas ritual). The winery is located near Bolton, MA --
directions from Boston, Worcester and points west are on the website
at http://www.nashobawinery.com/directions.html. The peaches cost
$12/half peck and $18/peck.
The alternative plan, in case the peaches aren't ripe yet, is to take
the winery tour/tasting, which is $6 per person over 21. (21 and under
is free, but you don't get to taste any wine -- sorry.) Nashoba Valley
Winery is famous for its fruit wines and also sells house-made beer
and spirits. Folks who don't drink are welcome to come; I generally
don't myself because of the medication I take.
I will call the winery a day or two before the trip to verify whether
or not the peaches are ready to pick, and will post here to let people
know. If you have any other questions, email me or call the farm at
978-928-4198. Hope to see you there!

Dear Subjects and Outlanders:
This year's Summer Solstice rite will be at Cauldron Farm this
Saturday, June 21, at noon as always. Please do not be late; we don't
do Solstice on Pagan standard time. We will have the ritual, which
will be a mystery play performed by the choir and some brave
volunteers, and then we will do our yearly act of dragging Summer
bodily out of the woods (in the form of a large stone) and setting it
in our stone circle. If you would like to help with the stone, please
bring work gloves. The more hands, the better.
Please bring potluck of any sort for eating after the stone-raising.
It will be kept in the back field, so bring things that can sit out
for a couple of hours. Drinks and ice will no doubt be especially
appreciated. Extra points for yellow or sun-shaped foods. Bug
repellent and sunscreen might also be useful.
Each year, a few folks want to camp out the night before or the night
after the ritual. If you'd like to do so, that's great; just let the
folks at Cauldron Farm know what you're doing and when you'll be there.
Sun's Blessings,
Raven Kaldera Regis
King of Asphodel
Hi folks,
There will be a Hestia Guild meeting on Sunday, April
20 at 2:00 PM at Cauldron Farm. Joshua will be
demonstrating the fine art of baking bread from
scratch and we will make soup to go with the bread and
possibly watch a food-related movie (Chocolat, Eat
Drink Man Woman, other suggestions?) in the meantime.
There's no charge for this event, and anyone may attend.
Please bring a vegetable or two for the soup, which
will probably have beef stew meat in it unless there's
an overwhelming number of vegetarians in attendance.
Hope to see you there!
Elizabeth
Though many were ill and couldn't make it, we were glad to see quite a
few people anyway! We hung our magical eggs, searched for
fortune-eggs, and hailed Demeter and Persephone. The weather was cold
but lovely, and spring is definitely on its way.
Hail to the Goddesses of Spring!
Rather than have people's Friday night plans hinge on the fickle
weather, and having folks drive out to Hubbardston two days in a row,
I have been asked to hold both portions of my class (Astronomy 1:
Remedial Astronomy for Pagans) on Saturday March 22. I can do that.
The first part will be at noon before the Ostara ritual, as previously
announced. The second part will be in the evening after potluck and
the Hestia Guild meeting, around 8pm. This is the "rain date" that was
announced for the evening portion. We'll do the class then, regardless
of the weather. If we don't have clear skies, that is okay.
