News Release on Tourism Forecasting SIG

Release date: 2009-11-27

The Tourism Forecasting Special Interest Group (SIG), sponsored by The Hong Kong Tourism Demand Forecasting System (HKTDFS), and hosted by the Forecasting Principles (http://www.forecastingprinciples.com/) was successfully launched on November 26, 2009. This SIG is maintained by Haiyan Song, the Chair Professor of Tourism and Associate Director of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

This is believed to be the first such SIG that builds a useful platform for industry executives, forecasting practitioners, and researchers concerned with tourism forecasting. It offers a comprehensive overview of the basic concepts and methods of tourism demand forecasting. In addition, the tourism forecasting SIG website also contains a large number of recent tourism forecasting publications including books, conference papers, journal articles, reports for practitioners, and working papers related to tourism forecasting. The site is linked to a number of official datasets and computer software sources, which are useful for tourism forecasting practitioners and researchers.

Please visit this SIG at http://tourism.forecastingprinciples.com/index.php.

Call for Manuscripts: Environmental Challenges and Asia. EAA Winter 2010

Education About Asia (EAA) is the peer-reviewed teaching journal of the
Association for Asian Studies. Our readers include undergraduate
instructors as well as high school and middle school teachers. Our
articles are intended to provide educators, who are often not
specialists, with basic understanding of Asia-related content. Qualified
referees evaluate all manuscripts submitted for consideration.

We are in the process of developing a special section entitled
Environmental Challenges and Asia for the winter 2010 issue of EAA.
In this special section, we invite authors to submit manuscripts that
address topics such as the potential conflicts between economic growth
and the environment in Asia, the environmental movement in Asian
countries, natural resources and their utilization and conservation, and
environmental problems that affect particular Asian countries. We are
looking for manuscripts about all areas of Asia.
Prospective authors should be aware that approximately sixty percent of
our readers are secondary or middle school teachers and the rest teach
at the undergraduate level. We are most interested in manuscripts that
are useful for survey-level courses. Please consult the EAA guidelines,
available on the Web site under my signature, before submitting a
manuscript for this special section. Prospective authors are also
encouraged to share possible manuscript ideas with me via email. The
deadline for initial submission of manuscripts is August 10, 2010.

Oct. 29th, 2009

Dear readers,

In the August COTRI newsletter, we dared to predict that China s outbound tourism will continue to grow in 2009 unlike most international tourism source markets in the world. The latest figures released from CNTA and the discussions at the UNWTO/PATA conference and the PATA Travel Mart in September confirm our analysis. More information on this and other results of the meetings in Hangzhou can be found in our first article in this newsletter.

Wherever you listen to tourism experts talking these days, Social Media Marketing is certain to come up as a topic. However, what exactly are Social Media the same as Internet 2.0, or just Twitter or something else often remains rather unclear. China, the country with the biggest and most active number of Internet users in the world, is a natural choice for using Social Media especially to younger, tech-savvy consumers keen on international travel. In our second article, we share with you some insights from our friends at Dragon Trail in Beijing. For next year, COTRI plans to do some workshops on Social Media Marketing in China. We will keep you updated.

COTRI is proud to announce that we have inked two important cooperation agreements with PATA and Belle Tourism International Consulting (BTI) separately at PATA Travel Mart. COTRI and PATA will publish a number of materials in the coming months. Moreover, COTRI and BTI agree to offer complimentary services and packages. One of the business fields of BTI, located in Shanghai, is creating both online and offline marketing plans for the development of Chinese. Details can be found in article No. 3 of this newsletter.

Our General Manager Berenice Aceves MBA participated successfully in a panel on The Perceptions of Chinese in the World and the Perception of the World by the Chinese during the CIBTM fair in Beijing in September. She shares with you her experiences at the CIBTM and the major information and insights of the presentations of all three participants Dr. Adam Wu (CBN), Prof. Zhang Guangrui (CASS) and herself in the fourth article.

Finally, COTRI and especially our staff member Yuan Yi M.Sc. has been very busy in further upgrading the Premium Content website of www.win-chinese-tourists.com. In our last article he gives examples of some of the presentations, research papers and graphs including also a lot of resources which were made available by Roy Graff of ChinaContact, who joins the work on www.win-chinese-tourists.com and other projects of COTRI as an adviser. Thank you and welcome, Roy. And thank you all for the very good response to the launch of our Premium Content website. Quite a few of the China tourism managers and analysts on our little planet have decided to part with 10 Euro a month to be able to get all figures and thoughts on Chinese Outbound tourism in detail and from different perspectives.

In a nutshell: Optimism, networking, and hard work that s what makes China tick and that s what makes COTRI tick as well.

Up here in Northern Germany the clouds are getting thicker with the season, and yes, international tourism will shrink by 6% or more in 2009, but the future is still bright: The Chairman of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), Mr. Shao Qiwei, in a recent interview with PATA compass magazine predicted 100 million outbound Chinese travellers already for the year 2015! And who could know better than Mr. Shao?

We wish success and enjoyable moments to all our readers!

Best regards,

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt

Director COTRI

PS.: We upgraded the layout of our newsletter a bit. Hope you like it.

(And in the unlikely event that you decide that you can afford not to care anymore about Chinese customers and want to stop your subscription to the COTRI newsletter, just drop us a line.)

Dear

You may have seen recent coverage in both trade and national press about the current funding crisis facing Tourism Concern. Unless we are able to raise £40,000 by Christmas we will be forced to close. The people, communities and causes that we have helped in the past will be left without a voice and a champion. We are appealing to further and higher education institutions to make donations because we are aware that they also rely on us for important research and information.

Tourism Concern has been the only single- issue charity on tourism in the UK campaigning for the rights of some of the poorest communities in tourism destinations. Their research has brought to light many issues that industry and governments would not want to address. Its demise would leave an irreplaceable void.’Angela Kalisch, Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management, Uni of Gloucestershire

Three out of four secondary schools in the UK requested Tourism Concern’s educational pack Beyond the Brochure, raising thousands of student’s awareness of tourism issues. Tourism Concern’s library holds the most comprehensive book stock and educational resources on tourism in the UK and is widely used by students and academics. Our advice and materials have helped shape tourism curricula across the country. Remember even if you do not personally use Tourism Concern’s resources, almost certainly your students do!

“I couldn’t have done my dissertation without Tourism Concern’s library.  I got a distinction”.

Andy Whiteside, MBA student, London Metropolitan Uni.

We have successfully campaigned for 20 years on issues that make a real impact to the people in the destinations around the world.

‘I fully support the work of Tourism Concern which consistently challenges the tourism industry, tourists and the UK government to become aware of their impacts and to ensure that tourism always benefits local communities.’ Leo Hickman, journalist, travel writer and author

A charitable foundation, the Margaret Hayman Trust, has pledged £10,000 a year for three years in support our core activities. We are appealing to all of our contacts and supporters in industry and education, our membership and to charitable foundations.  If you are able to help at all, please:

·                Send a cheque, care of Tricia Barnett, to Tourism Concern, Stapleton House,
     277  - 281 Holloway Road, London N7 8HN

·                Donate online at http://www.justgiving.com/tourism-concern-100-appeal

·                Telephone credit/debit card payments on 020 7133 3800

·                Tell your colleagues and request their help

·                Encourage student groups to fundraise for Tourism Concern

·                Forward this message to all your contacts

If you club together and send an institutional donation of £100 pounds or more we will add your name to the list of donors on our website – another way to get your courses known!

If you have any questions, or would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact Tricia Barnett, the Director, on 020 7133 3800 / tricia@...

We have a great body of work in the pipeline but urgently need to secure additional funds to ensure this work can continue. There is a real danger that without new funding Tourism Concern will be forced to close.

Dr Stroma Cole (Chair of Tourism Concern)

Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on: "Entrepreneurship and Small to Medium Enterprises in Tourism and Hospitality"

AIM AND SCOPE OF SPECIAL ISSUE:

Tourism businesses are often initiated by entrepreneurs who play significant roles in modifying the supply of recreation and leisure opportunities. While many tourism and hospitality businesses are small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) which require a great deal of entrepreneurship, little research on the subject of entrepreneurship in tourism and hospitality has been reported. We also have seen recent trends in emergence of farm attractions, home-stays, family style restaurants or cafes and retailing stores that attract and cater to tourists of different types. We have seen a remarkable growth of such SMEs in Asia Pacific. Many Asians, whose world view is deeply influenced by Confucianism, tend to place a great value on family coherence and collectivism. Thus, family-owned and operated businesses in tourism have been found common and often times such businesses are passed down from one generation to another in families. Entrepreneurship also plays a very important role in earlier stages of tourism development, particularly in rural and ethnic communities where multinational firms and international hotel chains are less likely to invest for their relatively small economic opportunities.

This special issue of APJTR aims to create a volume of the state of the art research on the theme of entrepreneurship and SMEs in tourism and hospitality. This special issue is aimed at addressing many questions relating to entrepreneurship and SME development in tourism and hospitality industry. Papers are invited in any topics relating to:

  1. Case studies in tourism and hospitality entrepreneurship and SME businesses
  2. Influence of culture and social values in SME and entrepreneurship development
  3. Success factors for entrepreneurship and SMEs in tourism and hospitality
  4. Role of public sector in promoting entrepreneurship and SMEs
  5. Interaction between public and private sectors in tourism entrepreneurship and SME development
  6. Education and training in tourism entrepreneurship and SME development
  7. Other related topics relevant to the theme of tourism entrepreneurship and SME development.

CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE:

Papers will be selected for inclusion in the special issue based on quality of research, relevance to the thematic issue, and application of the research for professionals in the industry.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Extended abstracts of no more than 1,000 words should be submitted by email to the Guest Editor by January 31, 2010. Authors will receive feedback on their extended abstracts by February 28, 2010. Completed papers incorporating the guest editors' feedback must be submitted via email by May 15, 2010. All papers will then be blind reviewed by at least two reviewers. The special issue of the journal will be published in late 2010 or early 2011.

INTRODUCTION
The Department of Geography, National University of Singapore, offers research-based graduate programmes leading to M.Soc.Sci. and Ph.D. degrees.

The Department, with more than 25 full-time faculty members, supports cutting-edge research in human and physical geography (http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/geog/people/faculty.html). Our faculty are drawn from around the world as well as Singapore, providing many research opportunities for graduate students. Some of them are widely recognized as the worlds leading researchers in Geography. From time to time, we also host a number of postdoctoral fellows and visiting professors in the Department.

CORE RESEARCH AREAS
Our research interests are organized into these main research groups:
http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/geog/research/coreareas.html

(3) Politics, Economies, and Space
Global production networks; politics of economic development; transnational corporations from Asia; technologies and innovations

UNIVERSITY/DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES
The National University of Singapore is the countrys premier university and has all the facilities of a world class university. The Department is equipped with GIS, earth sciences laboratories and a GIS & Map Resource Unit. All graduate students have access to the Universitys computer network and associated resources. The Universitys Library has the reputation of being one of the best in the region, with, inter alia, on-line access to over 500 overseas databases covering all disciplines.

These modules are done in conjunction with the thesis and serve to expand the knowledge base of our students. UNWTO Study on Religious Tourism in Asia and the Pacific

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) wishes to undertake research on the potential of Asia and the Pacific as a major destination for religious tourism as well as a source market. Asia is the birthplace of major religions and religious philosophies of the world ranging from Hinduism and Buddhism to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The volume, growth, economic importance and political, cultural, and social significance of travel for religious purposes is an important element in the social structure of Asia and the Pacific that has not been fully analysed and UNWTO wishes to undertake both desk as well as field research to establish a clear-cut picture of religious tourism in, and from, Asia and the Pacific.

The resulting book will consist of three major components: Regional Profiling, Country-Specific Analysis, and Detailed Recommendations, including a separate chapter on the philosophy of religion and tourism in Asia and the Pacific.

UNWTO Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific welcomes contributions on the aforementioned themes and case studies from researchers, professors, consultants, and scholars worldwide, with proposals/abstracts submitted by not later than 15 August 2009 to:

Mr. Omar Nawas

RR/AS/89/09                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Madrid, 7 September 2009

Subject: Invitation to 3rd UNWTO/PATA Forum on Tourism Trends and Outlook

Dear List Members,

We are pleased to inform you that at the gracious invitation of the Government of Guilin of China, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) are organising the 3rd UNWTO/PATA Forum on Tourism Trends and Outlook, scheduled to be held in Guilin, China from 15-17 November 2009. The forum of this year will again be organized in collaboration with Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The forum has been successfully held twice in Guilin. Our philosophy of staging such a forum is to provide a Pan-Asia-Pacific platform on an annual basis for policy makers, senior officials, researchers and industry representatives to take stock of the global & regional trends and their impact on tourism. The event, under the unique and joint umbrella of UNWTO and PATA, will help participants to share information, analyze the situation and map out the next course of action for the future. The 3rd forum this year aims at the following specific objectives:

-           Analyze the current economic situation and its impact on tourism with a focus on sharing strategies, tactics and practices amongst destinations in Asia and the Pacific.

-           Discuss the prospects of tourism in light of technology and innovation, change in the consumer behaviour, and global warming and climate change in major source markets and destinations.

-           Identify and discuss the long-term and short-term benefits with a focus on the role of national tourism administrations in the policy, development and management practices of future tourism.

In light of the foregoing, we would like to extend our invitation to you to attend this conference and to participate actively in the discussions that could provide us with insights into the scenario of the tourism industry in the immediate future and in the years to come.

Please note that the Preliminary Programme for the forum, the General Information Note, the Technical Note and the Registration Form are attached and also available at:
