Olivia Lufkin was born on December 9th 1979, on the tiny island of
Okinawa (located south west of mainland Japan). Olivia is the oldest
of three children. Her sister Caroline is in the music industry and
currently attends music college in the United States. The youngest
of the three, Jeffrey, is the leader of his own band, which,
according to Olivia, 'seriously kicks ass!'
'Olivia was an interesting child' says her father, Dan. She listened
to a lot of music. She was flooded with classical music played by
her parents, and sometimes watched and listened to her dad play
classical guitar. 'She was creative artistically. She liked to draw
and made some very interesting and very detailed pictures.' says
Dan. She continued to develop artistically and, by her middle school
years, began to show more interest and ability, winning art awards
throughout her elementary, middle, and high school years.
Olivia's father (an American, who is now a school teacher) used to
be in the Marines, so Olivia changed schools 'like crazy' she says.
Her family moved to San Diego, California when she was about two
years old, and lived there until she was six. After spending another
seven years in Okinawa they moved to North Carolina for two years,
before returning to Okinawa, where they lived until Olivia's debut.
Despite the disruptions, Olivia did well academically.
'She had lots of friends and was always a pretty girl.' says Dan.
She took part in many group activities. At school, she played
soccer, softball, and basketball, she joined the school chorus, and
was selected as a vocalist in a special jaxx singing group. Outside
school, Olivia took extra classes including piano, guitar and vocal
lessons. At the same time she was getting more interested in music
and rising quickly through the ranks at the Okinawa Actor's school.
'She never had to be pushed concerning music. She did it naturally.'
says Dan. During her freshman and sophomore years in high school,
she worked very hard on her music. It was during this time that she
blossomed as a singer/artist.
Her first big break was to come when she attended the Okinawa Actors
School. The school, which was established in 1983 and is a regular
scouting ground for production companies, has produced many popular
performers, including Namie Amuro, Rina Chinen, Speed, and Max.
Instead of traditional teaching methods, the school allows students
to do as they please, which brings out their own individual
characteristics. It was at the Okinawa Actors School that Olivia got
her first chance to perform in front of large audiences. 'We got to
sing on huge stages!' says Olivia.
In 1996, while performing on stage at the Okinawa Actors School,
Olivia was spotted by the boss of Rising Productions, who are
responsible for many other top Japanese artists including Namie
Amuro, Rina Chinen, Speed, and Max. They asked Olivia to become a
member of their latest pop sensation, Dance & Dream. The group
(composed of three girls: Olivia, Aya and Chika) released their
first single 'In Your Eyes' on August 21st 1996. They were a huge
success!
Two years later, Olivia caught the eye of top Japanese producer
Tetsuya 'TK' Komuro. At the time, TK was working with French
composer Jean Michel Jarre. They were producing a song for the
France 98 FIFA World Cup, and they were looking for a singer. TK
asked Olivia to work on the song because he thought she had the
right kind of voice -- an angelic voice with a rock sound. The maxi-
single 'Together Now' was released on April 22nd 1998.
In September 1998, after five hit singles (all of which featured in
various TV commercials) and one album, Olivia announced that she was
leaving D&D to launch a solo career. She released her first solo
single 'I.L.Y ~desire~' on February 3rd 1999. The break-up of D&D
was a surprise to their fans, but the single (a powerful rock song)
was probably even more surprising to them. It was very different to
the songs of D&D, but many of Olivia's fans knew it was the right
choice for her, and they wanted more!
Olivia released four more singles between May 1999 and July 2000,
which all received excellent reviews, proving she had indeed made
the right move. She made several appearances on popular TV shows
such as Hey Hey Hey, Music Station, UTABAN, and Popjam, as well as
appearing in several magazines, including Thrill, bea's UP, and Ray.
Olivia and her songs also featured in TV commercials for Morinaga
Cubic and Kanebo Cosmetics.
In October 2000, shortly after the release of her 6th single 'Color
Of Your Spoon', Olivia became a DJ on Tokyo's InterFM. The one-hour
show 'H.I.S World Trax' is broadcast every Friday at 10p.m. and
features hit music from around the world. Every week, Olivia plays
one of her own songs too and keeps fans up to date on her own
career.
On October 16th 2000, Olivia performed her first live concert at the
Muse Hall in Osaka. People who were there described the show as
exciting, and Olivia's voice as intoxicating. She really impressed
the crowd! Talking about the show, Olivia said, 'My first live show
was just all kinds of energy bumping around, hitting all kinds of
things. I felt all kinds of feelings.'
Olivia's debut album 'Synchronicity' was released on December 6th
2000. The album features all 6 singles and a total of 14 tracks.
Although many of the songs have a rock edge, the album proves that
Olivia is more than just a rock singer; she says she does not like
the idea of being fit into a particular category, such as pop, rock,
etc., and says her music is what she feels at the time.
When asked about what direction her music is taking, Olivia
responded, 'I don't decide on any directions beforehand, my music
comes from my moods. If I'm really excited, I'll probably make a
fast song etc.'. So, what can we expect from Olivia in the future?
Olivia says, 'I have many many goals. It's all a surprise!!!'

Biography
OLIVIA attended the famous Okinawa Actors School, alma mater of
popular acts like Namie Amuro. She was discovered there and signed
to AVEX as part of the idol girl group D&D, which had a Eurobeat
sound. When the group disbanded, OLIVIA became a solo artist. In
contrast to her work with D&D, her first single in
1999 "I.L.Y.~Yokubou" had a driving rock sound. Her first two
singles were written by others, but she wrote her third single "Dear
Angel" and all her singles since then. In 1999 and 2000, she
released six singles altogether, all with a pop-rock or alternative
sound, and at the end of the year released her first album
synchronicity, containing all her singles to date. In 2001 and 2002
she released two more singles.
Although critically acclaimed, her solo singles were not chart
toppers; her biggest hits, her second and third singles, both peaked
at #29 on the Oricon, and her successive releases charted lower and
lower (her final single peaked at #99). AVEX switched her from the
main label to their "indies" label cutting edge. Rather than chase
after mainstream success, OLIVIA continued on her own path. In 2003
she released 4 mini-albums instead of singles with macabre yet
whimsical titles such as Comatose Bunny Butcher. Likewise, her music
became both darker and cuter. For example, in the title song on
Internal Bleeding Strawberry, OLIVIA hisses "but it leaks... and
leaks... and leaks..." and then screams "strawberry don't you die on
me!" These mini-albums contained only English songs.
In 2004 she released her second album, The Lost Lolli, which was
also all in English. This album peaked at #111 on the Oricon.
However, AVEX released an overseas version of this album, reflecting
OLIVIA's increasing success outside of Japan; typically, only chart-
topping artists release overseas versions of their albums.
After releasing The Lost Lolli, OLIVIA went on an unofficial hiatus
(except her performance in the "Halloween of the Living Dead" hosted
by Hyde the october 30th, 2005), where she gained the life as model
of fashion magazine, with her fans wondering whether if she would
ever come back. In 2006, it was announced that she would be
recording the closing song for the new NANA anime under the
name "OLIVIA inspi' REIRA(TRAPNEST)." The show debuted on April 5,
2006. The single was released on the 28th of June, and debut into
the Top 10 of the Oricon Daily charts, and her first single to do
so. Olivia confesed that the hiatus was because at the time of The
Lost Lolli's release, she was "feeling pretty depressed",
and "started to notice and realize a lot of her faults" and that her
musical expression has now changed and she realized need to help for
make music.
After participed with Anna Tsuchiya in the NANA SPECIAL STREET LIVE
that took place in Shinjuku Station Square(Tokyo, Japan) on June
25th of 2006 and did a concert in Shibuya O-WEST,Tokyo on July 25th
of 2006 called OLIVIA LIVE 2006 Tears & Rainbows where realesed a
new song Recorded Butterfly, this songs will be use for the NANA
anime as a TRAPNEST song. Then in the episode 19 from NANA anime
broadcasted in august 16th, was realesed a new ending song called
Starless Night and in the episode 22 broadcasted the september 13,
was realesed a new opening song called Wish. Latest is the announced
of some concerts called OLIVIA LIVE 2006 Chocolate & Confusion at
the CLUB QUATTRO along of Japan betwen September and October and a
new single under the name "OLIVIA inspi' REIRA(TRAPNEST)" and a
future participation at Pacific Media Expo 2006 in LA (USA) in late
October.

OLIVIA (2005)OLIVIA (Olivia Lufkin) is a bilingual artist on the
cutting edge sub-label of Avex. Olivia was born in Okinawa, but has
lived in the US for roughly six years. She was scouted from the
Okinawa Actors School and was asked to join a eurobeat band called
D&D. She accepted, and debuted in 1996 with the single IN YOUR EYES.
The band was semi-successful, but Olivia later decided to go solo.
Olivia's music style has changed from a quite poppy sound into an
experimental rock one. She now writes and composes all of her
material. Though Olivia was on a hiatus for around two years after
the release of 2004's The Lost Lolli, Olivia has now returned to
sing the ending theme song to the anime adaption to Yazawa Ai's
manga Nana.
Both of Olivia's siblings are musicians as well. Her brother, Jeff,
is in a band and her sister Caroline is an electronica artist under
the US indies label Temporary Records. Olivia even drew the CD art
for Caroline's Murmurs album.

Information
Early Life
Olivia in D&D
Olivia was born in 1979 in Okinawa. Because her father was a US
Marine at the time, she moved around a lot. In 1982, Olivia moved to
San Diego, California, then back to Okinawa. Later on Olivia moved
back to the US (North Carolina) where she attended White Oak High
School in Jacksonville. Even more, after two years Olivia moved back
to Okinawa.
When Olivia was little, she listened to a lot of classical music
that her parents played around her every morning, as well as
watching musicals on television. Originally she liked to draw and
make art; and even won awards throughout her schooling years for her
art.
Olivia started to work on music during her first years at high
school. She tried out for a part in a production of the musical The
Sound of Music in Japan, but didn't get the part that she wanted.
Later, Olivia would attend the illustrious Okinawa Actors School
(with alumni such as Amuro Namie and SPEED). While she performed in
a concert in 1996, she was scouted for Avex Trax and was asked to
join a new eurobeat dance-unit called Dance & Dream, aka D&D. She
accepted, and D&D debuted in 1996.
D&D
D&D was a eurobeat unit made of Olivia and two fellow band-members,
Uehara Aya and Higa Chikano. They debuted in 1996 with the single IN
YOUR EYES, and between 1996 and 1998 released five singles. All of
the singles were promoted by being songs used in TV commercials for
several companies. The releases only had moderate success, as the
highest charting single only reached #25 on Oricon charts. However,
their debut album, Love is a Melody ~D&D Memorial 1st~, reached up
to #5 on Oricon charts. D&D's music style was quite heavily
controlled and packaged. Olivia is quoted to have said that the time
spent there "was fun and I was happy", and she was glad that she did
it. As time passed, she would have ideas, such as, "instead of that
melody, this kind of melody would be so much better" or something
similar, until the point that she got extremely stressed.
After the release of D&D's album, it was decided that the band would
disband and separated into two different groups; 'OLIVIA' as
Olivia's solo-project and Aya & Chika, a group featuring the two
remaining members of D&D. After only two singles, Kiss in the Sun
and Rise in My Heart (which charted at #35 and #55 respectively),
Aya & Chika were cut from Avex Trax and disbanded.
Olivia during I.L.Y. ~Yokubou~ promotionFamous eurobeat pioneer and
producer, Komuro Tetsuya, heard of Olivia one day and decided that
she would be perfect for a project in which he was planning along
with Jean Michel Jarre. The project was to make the theme song for
the FIFA France '98 World Soccer Cup, entitled Together Now. The
single was released a month after D&D's last album and was released
in both Japan and France. Olivia herself even features primarily in
the music video. This release made Olivia take a step away from her
previous euro/dance sound and into a more rock sound.
Ten months after the release of this single, Olivia was once again
active in the music business. Komuro Tetsuya decided that Olivia
would work well as a solo artist (much like the former success of
Amuro Namie as she graduated from the SUPER MONKEYS). Olivia then
debuted as a solo artist under avex trax in February of 1999.
Tetsuya himself produced her first two singles, I.L.Y. ~Yokubou~ (I
Love You ~Desire~) and re-ACT. I.L.Y. reached #32 on Oricon charts
while re-ACT reached #29, showing the same moderate success as which
D&D held.
However, Olivia was unhappy with still not having much control over
her own career. Her third single, Dear Angel, while not being
composed by her (it was composed by Ebine Yuuko) featured Olivia's
own lyrics in both Japanese and English, and even featured her as an
arranger. Olivia said she wrote the song in "...slightly sad days"
and that at this point she was trying to "create a more complicated
sound". From this point afterwards, all of Olivia's works would be
her own; composed and written by herself. Before creating songs,
Olivia went over artists' songs that she liked (artists such as PJ
Harvey and Björk), but found it hard to "...make that kind of music
in the Japanese music scene". Hence, Olivia decided to 'balance' out
her music style and made "more easy to understand rock".
Olivia went on to release three more singles before releasing her
debut album, synchronicity, two years after her solo debut. Olivia
herself said that there was no real concept to the album, as each
track sounded different (as the album was a mix of rock, pop,
ethereal music and even jazz). The album peaked at #20 on Oricon
charts.
Post-Synchronicity
Olivia during Into the Stars promotionAfter a hiatus for over a
year, Olivia released her seventh single, Sea me. From here onward,
she would release under the rock-oriented Cutting Edge label,
whereas before she released under avex trax. By this point, foreign
interest in her had grown a lot as Olivia's first major fansite,
OliviaLufkinOnline.com, was created shortly afterwards. The single
itself did not fare that well (#89 on the charts).
Olivia's releases became increasingly rare and sporadic from then
on, with a video clip collection being released four months later.
After this Olivia's next single, Into The Stars, was planned to be
released in July with an album released at the end of the year.
However, plans were changed as the single was postponed two months
to September due to market forces, and an album release also
similarly delayed.
Mini-Album Era
At this point in time, Olivia decided on having a complete style
change, with all of her releases to be written and sung in English.
Her follow-up album turned out to be a mini-album that would be
released exclusively at Tower Records, Internal Bleeding Strawberry.
The mini-album featured English versions of her two post-
Synchronicity singles along with an English version of Dress me Up
and an Old Irish language (Goídelc) version of Color of your Spoon.
Along side this, in 2003 Olivia decided to launch a rare-items
fashion label called Black Daisy Ville with her friend Kozue Rin.
This fashion line would continue on until 2004 in which a summer
line of clothes/items were released. Presently not much has been
heard of from Black Daisy Ville.
Olivia performing live (2004)Internal Bleeding Strawberry would turn
out to be the first of four mini-albums to be released in 2003,
being followed up with Merry & Hell Go Round, Comatose Bunny Butcher
and The Return of the Chlorophyll Bunny roughly one quarter of a
year away from each other. These three mini-albums were much like
Internal Bleeding Strawberry in which they were only released at
Tower Records and sung entirely in English. These three also heavily
featured Olivia's brother, Jeffrey Lufkin, who helped out with
lyrics, composition, instruments and even background vocals and rap
for several songs.
To follow up these four mini-albums, Olivia released her second full-
length album, The Lost Lolli. The primarily featured the best
material from her four mini-albums except for two new tracks; Alone
in Our Castle and Fake Flowers (as well as two re-arrangements).
This album was released nation-wide (though with a limited first
press version available at Tower Records) and reached #121 on Oricon
charts. The Lost Lolli also used SpidERSpins (Lost Lolli Mix) as a
radio single for the release. The song also had a music video to go
along with it.
Post-Hiatus
Olivia during A Little Pain's promotionExcept for a few sporadic
concerts, Olivia slipped once again into hiatus for roughly two and
a half years. One of these concerts was the illustrious HALLOWEEN OF
THE LIVING DEAD concert alongside Hyde in October 2005.
Nothing much was heard from Olivia, except that she gained the life
as model of fashion magazine. She later said that the hiatus was
because at the time of The Lost Lolli's release, she was "feeling
pretty depressed", and "started to notice and realize a lot of [her]
faults". This was brought out from a "...dark filter through which
[she] saw everything", which first came about during the production
of her Merry & Hell Go Round mini-album. To counter-act this, she
flew to LA where she lived for three months. Later on, Olivia would
return to Tokyo and re-structure her life; eating more healthy
foods, etc, and making her pace of life a lot slower.
During Olivia's hiatus, her sister Caroline debuted in the USA under
the Indies label Temporary Residence in October 2005 with the single
Where's My Love. She later released her debut album, Murmurs, in
early 2006. Olivia herself helped out with the art direction of
Murmurs' booklet, by taking photos with Caroline and adding 'Critter
Project'-style drawings to the booklet.
It was announced in early March 2006, that Olivia would once again
be releasing music in the Japanese music industry. She would compose
the ending theme song for the anime adaption of the manga NANA,
entitled a little pain. This was alongside fellow avex rock artist
Tsuchiya Anna who would be singing the opening theme song. The
manga's author, Yazawa Ai, asked her to sing the ending theme song
when one of the avex staff members gave her a copy of Olivia's Sea
Me and Into The Stars singles. She later exclaimed, "It can only be
her" when she heard the music. Olivia first made the general theme
to the lyrics, then wrote the song in English. Later on she changed
the lyrics into Japanese. The single is about "[Reira's] loneliness,
pain and strength", as Olivia found that she could relate well to
the character.
Olivia has said that her musical expression has now changed. Her
style "has gotten a lot more detailed", it's "pleasing to the ear"
and "a lot cooler". She had to do a lot of research into Reira's
character, as she "never really read manga". She specifically wrote
the song tailored to the point of view of Reira. She states, "It was
fun to sing as another person. Like an actress". She said that
she "...wrote many different songs", but they sounded too 'western
and dark', whereas A Little Pain had more of a feeling of a 'top
Japanese band'.
Olivia's future plans include holding a string of live concerts, as
well as a second "OLIVIA inspi' REIRA" single titled Wish / Starless
Night in mid-October. Olivia will also be holding her first Overseas
live at the Pacific Media Expo in late October.
