APA FIRST WEEKEND FILM CLUB
DECEMBER 7, 2002
First weekend box office reciepts are very important to Hollywood and
to our films because these reports will make or break a film. If the
films does well on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the "first" weekend it
comes out, theater owners and distributors will make their decisions
on Monday mornings about a film.
So, we encourage each and every one of you to go out there and
support our Asian American and Asian international filmmakers. It is
at the box office where we can show our strength and our power for
our films and and filmmakers.
Even if you don't have the time to sit through the film on the
first weekend - go to the theater and purchase a ticket so that we
can show box office $$$ numbers. It is extremely important. At the
end of the day.. the color in Hollywood is GREEN! Show up!

the hearts of audiences across the United States and overseas. The
Way Home broke box-office records upon release in Korea. Grossing
over $20 million dollars, the film outperformed Korean and American
films alike, including Lord of the Rings, Spiderman and A Beautiful
Mind.
The Way Home continues to play to packed houses in Los Angeles and
New York. It had the highest opening weekend for a Korean film,
grossing over $29,000 with a per screen average of $9,912. The film
expands this weekend in additional cities.
Critics continue to celebrate The Way Home, calling it:
"A charming fable! A sweet new movie. Lovely...amusing...touching."
-A.O. Scott, THE NEW YORK TIMES
"A loving little film."
-Kevin Thomas, LOS ANGELES TIMES
"***1/2! Amazing! Masterful storytelling! Life-affirming story of
love, kinship and sacrifice. Unforgettable and lyrical."
-Jami Bernard, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
"Exhilerating! Easily the year's finest foreign film and one of the
very best movies of the year! You may see a more beautiful,
touching, utterly surprising film this year, but don't count on it.
A masterpiece. If the Academy gives another best for foreign film
Oscar it proves how far gone they are. A miraculous film the reminds
you why you love movies in the first place."
-Jim Svejda, KNX/CBS Radio
"A sparkling gem of a movie!"
-Lael Lowenstein, NPR
"Heartwarming! A valuable export item in the world of international
cinema."
-Stephen Whitty, STAR LEDGER

Ma. Story takes place in 1950's Vietnam. Cinematography -
CHRISTOPHER DOYLE - He works lots with Wong Kar Wai.
RABBIT PROOF FENCE - PHILIP NOYCE - Amazing story about the half
breed Aboriginie Children who are taken away from their families and

over 1,200 miles to get back to their families.
ARARAT - ATOM EGOYAN - Brilliant film that addresses the Armenian
genocide that took place in Turkey - but managed to escape history
