Outdated bio-

Sandeep Pandey while studying at the University of California-Berkeley, joined V.J.P. Srivastavoy and Deepak Gupta to form Asha for Education to support education for poor children in India by tapping the resources of Indians abroad. The enterprising founders raised ten thousand dollars in one year. Sandeep returned to India and joined the Indian Institute of Technology. In 1992, he left the institute to devote himself full-time for a larger purpose: to bring about socioeconomic change.

In the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, Sandeep confronted the impoverished world of low-caste families and dalits, or untouchables. With local volunteers in the villages of Reoti and Bhainsaha, he created schools that instill self-reliance and values for a just society. Older youths participate in community improvement as volunteers and health aides. They are part of what Sandeep calls "the first grassroots volunteer base of Asha in India."

A fuller expression of Sandeep's vision is the Asha ashram in the dalit village of Lalpur, outside Lucknow. They follow a special Asha curriculum and fill the air with songs and stories that convey the school's philosophy. The ashram also serves as a retreat center for Asha workshops and provides simple health services for the community. It is introducing new technologies and livelihood projects. To break down caste barriers, the ashram community conspicuously violates upper-caste taboos against dalits and publicizes anti-dalit crimes and abuses such as bribe taking by local officials.

He has been active in empowering marginalized communities as well as working on issues of peace and justice. He has been a strong voice demanding de-nuclearization of South Asia and walked over 1000 KM from Pokhran - the site of India's nuclear tests - to Sarnath - the site of the Buddha's first teachings, creating awareness regarding the impact of nuclearization. He has also been a strong advocate against religious violence and marginalization, actively working to build an atmosphere of religious pluralism. For all these efforts he was awarded the Magsasay Award in 2002 (one of the youngest awardees ever). The Magsasay Award is often described as Asia's Nobel Prize and recognizes individuals forty years or younger for outstanding work in the issues of social change in his or her community.

In spring 2005, Sandeep Pandey organized a 1000 KM march from Delhi to Multan (in Pakistan) creating awareness through discussions and cultural programs on issues related to peace between India and Pakistan. This was the first extensive grass roots level interaction between Indians and Pakistani's in five decades.

Hi,
This is a last minute notice. There is talk by C Srinivasan from Zero Waste Management (http://zerowastemanagement.org/), Tamilanadu India.
Venue: E-Quad Princeton University (http://www.ashanet.org/princeton/e-quad.html)
Time 3.30pm 10/02/09,

More about Srinivasan

Srinivasan carried out detailed research on the Vellore hills: their history, historical forts, village communities living around them and their impact on the hills and plant and animal life, which led to his design of the Vellore Hill Restoration Project. He realised that the project would require a tremendous amount of energy and resources, a committed team of volunteers, support from the government and foundations and, most importantly, the support and participation of all the citizens of Vellore. How was he going to get there?

Srinivasan identified Exnora International (a well-known voluntary environmental organisation, which was foundard by Mr. M.B. Nirmal) as the most popular people's environmental movement in Tamil Nadu and joined the team. He started the Exnora Green Cross (EGC) in 1995, as an affiliate of Exnora International.

He framed EGC’s vision is to “bring about socio-economic change through employment generation based on environmental conservation by enlisting people's participation”. As much as possible, the projects employ ecofriendly and labour-intensive processes, use renewable sources of energy and local and biodegradable materials, and avoid the use of machinery. The strength of Srinivasan is his focus on demonstrating simple and replicable solutions to long-standing environmental problems in the society.

Besides helping him network with similar environmental groups, experts and other committed volunteers, Exnora exposed Srinivasan to new approaches to problem solving, techniques to mobilise communities and an international envionmental training program in Seattle, USA. While in Seattle, he realised how fortunate we Indians were to have such plentiful sunlight that we never made use of. On his return, he carried out a year-long experiment in growing vegetables on roof-tops. Thus was born the Vegetable Roof Garden Project.

Very soon, Srinivasan realised that Vellore was facing a grave problem, having exhausted all its open land space for dumping waste. Waste was being burnt indiscriminately or left unattended to. Communities started protesting. Srinivasan realised that solving the mounting garbage problem in Vellore was a sure way of getting the government and the people's support for his work, and launched a series of projects to compost waste and make Vellore a zero-waste town. The idea was to use the compost to green the hills.

The first demonstration project was a Community Composting Project, launched with the support of UNICEF, which recycled waste from five neighbourhoods in Vellore. Recognizing a thundering success, the local government aproached Srinivasan with a crisis: the town's fish market was stinking and breeding diseases, and the affected communities were filing litigation to shut it down. Srinivasan took on the path-breaking Fish Market Composting Project, which collected and composted fish waste, turned the market miraculously clean, and showed the town that recycling was the only way. And then came the Temple Waste Composting Project. Now, there is no looking back. Projects are underway to compost waste from all vegetable markets, hotels and marriage halls in Vellore. Srinivasan is on his way to converting Vellore into a zero-waste town.

Srinivasan's hobby is to develop creative schemes like the Coconut Tree Scheme, for which he has 177 families registered to plant coconut trees on all their family functions like weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.

Hello Amrish/Ravi,
My name is Parag Shah and I volunteer for the Philadelphia chapter of Association for India's Development (AID, philly.aidindia.org).

Just to give you an overview about our organization, AID is a volunteer movement promoting sustainable, equitable and just development. AID has about 40 chapters all over the U.S. and works in collaboration with NGOs in India on developmental projects in various fields such as education, health, livelihoods, agriculture, women's issues, social justice etc. AID has been awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator. You can find more information about AID on this website (http://www.aidindia.org/main/).

The reason for writing the email is that AID-Philadelphia is organizing a fund-raising concert by the band Indian Ocean in Philadelphia on Oct. 3. I would like to request you to publicize this event among the patrons of your ASHA chapter. If you could forward the following HTML and attached flier to your patrons it would be great. ASHA-Philadelphia is also supporting this event with publicity and volunteers.

Do let me know if you want more information or have any questions. Awaiting a positive response. Thank you.

Regards,
Parag.

PS: My apologies if you received this request for a second time.

Asha Princeton chapter is organizing a talk by CK (Bablu) Ganguly of Timbaktu Collective on Saturday (05/30) at 4.30pm in E-Quad building of Princeton University (http://www.ashanet.org/princeton/e-quad.html for directions).

C.K. (Bablu) Ganguly started working in rural Andhra Pradesh in the late seventies motivated by the call of Jayaprakash Narayan. Since then he has been involved with human rights issues (especially economic, social, cultural and environmental) of agricultural laborers, marginal peasants, women and children. Over the last decade, his work and personal orientation has moved from direct political action and agitation politics to one of building ecological and food security for the communities that he lives with and to nurture a constructive politics of dissent. Bablu’s early years as a political and theater activist brought him in contact with the knowledge and wisdom present in the rural communities he was working with. This made him question the paradigm of modern development, leading to the realization of the need to work with communities directly to develop viable solutions. Towards this end, Bablu co-founded the Timbaktu Collective in 1990 in the drought-prone region of Ananthapur District, Andhra Pradesh. Timbaktu has helped foster efforts to strengthen the natural resource base on which most people of Anantapur district still depend. Today, the Collective organizes people in 130 villages in Ananthapur District to address issues of environmental sustainability (reforestation, watershed management), education, women's rights, livelihood generation activities and organic farming. The Collective has helped 8 villages to take control of about 10,000 contiguous acres of common lands and comprehensively regenerate it into a forest, revitalize their common traditional water harvesting structures and 4,000 acres of marginalized agricultural land. Bablu was awarded the Ashoka fellowship in 1993 for his work in regenerating and reforesting the common lands. Timbaktu’s education program addresses child rights through a three-pronged approach - the right to childhood, organizing children so they have a platform to express themselves and working with children having disabilities. They run a residential school for children from the neighboring villages, many of who are from broken homes. They also run a day school that provides high quality education to underprivileged children. These are efforts that Asha has been involved with for the last 14 years. The organic farming initiative, Timbaktu Organic, which started 4 years back, works with over 400 farmers today. A venture based on socially responsible investment, it is a farmer owned co-operative that is revitalizing the cultivation of local crops like millets. Asha's support through Work An Hour called 'Seeds of Hope' helped the program in its early stages. Bablu continues to be the Chairperson of Timbaktu and provides leadership and vision to its activities.

Since going back now for six months, no one in the asha group has ever responded to my personal email.  How can you expect to encourage volunteers or interested people to work with you to benefit your programs if you don't answer any personal email.  I am now unsubscribing from your group.

Dear Padma, Subhashree:
I will bring this up at the chapter meeting tomorrow. We should be able to host Mamata.
I think once Princeton's decides to have Mamata in this area, NYC/NJ and Philly may be intersted in her visit, too. I will inform both these chapters.
Please snd me details of the schedule. I will check if I can arrange visits to local schools.

Regards,
Ravi Gangavarapu.

P.S.: Going forward use my gmail for faster response (frequency of checking better thatn yahoo) .

Dear Ravi,

Mamatha of SVYM (Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement) will be visiting the US. Padma from Asha SV (of the 100 mile ultra marathon fame) has arranged for Mamatha's visit to the US and is planning for her itinerary here.  Local Asha volunteers in Boston and Chicago are arranging for Ms. Mamatha's visit to local education groups, local public schools etc to have an exchange of ideas in these areas. Asha SV has supported SVYM for seeral years now and this visit stemmed in part from the ongoing engagement.

Would the Princeton chapter be interested in hosting Ms. Mamatha and possibly arranging for some visits / meetings for her with local schools, and with groups working in education, curriculum etc?

Can you also suggest other folks in the North East chapters who may be interested in working with Ms. Mamatha.

Thanks,

Subashree

Dear All,

Pres. El. Barack Obama's change.gov website is fascinating - this last week they had a feature which solicited questions from the public - the list of these questions are very interesting - in addition, they have a whole section where they are publishing original docs from say the ACLU, the green energy industry reps etc..and soliciting comments..please circulate the link and participate..
