Middle Eastern belly dance is based on segregated traditional folk dances performed for special occasions such as weddings, births and festivals. In modern times most Middle Eastern countries are no longer segregated and separate festivities are not common. While many Americans may think of Middle Eastern belly dance as being rooted in seduction, this is not the role it plays in Middle Eastern society. It is a social dance that people of all ages do for fun when they get together with friends and family.
Asha Belly Dancers believe that now more than ever it is important to make this aspect of Middle Eastern culture accessible to an American audience. As always, we strive to educate the public about belly dancing and who belly dancers are – strong, dedicated people who love the art of dance.

Asha Belly Dancers, Inc. is a group of women who share a passion for Middle Eastern Music and Dance. This folkloric/fusion style dance company formed in 1997 after participating in a TMCC Belly Dance course in Reno, Nevada. In 2001, Asha obtained non-profit status in order to fund yearly free multicultural, family oriented events in the Truckee Meadows area.

This award winning dance company performs several folkloric dance styles including Indian, Moroccan, Persian, Turkish, Egyptian, and African influences as well as American Cabaret.

Asha means life, and to us dancing IS life!
